Simultaneous extraction of the weak radius and the weak mixing angle from parity-violating electron scattering on 12 C

We study the impact of nuclear structure uncertainties on a measurement of the weak charge of 12 C at the future Mainz Energy Recovering Superconducting Accelerator (MESA) facility in Mainz. Information from a large variety of nuclear models, accurately calibrated to the ground-state properties of selected nuclei, suggest that a 0.3% precision measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry at forward angles will not be compromised by nuclear structure effects, thereby allowing a world-leading determination of the weak charge of 12 C . Furthermore, we show that a combination of measurements of the parity-violating asymmetry at forward and backward angles for the same electron-beam energy can be used to extract information on the nuclear weak charge distribution. We conclude that a 0.34% precision on the weak radius of 12 C may be achieved by performing a 3% precision measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry at backward angles.

Spectrum and structure of octet and decuplet baryons and their positive-parity excitations

A continuum approach to the three-valence-quark bound-state problem in quantum field theory, employing parametrizations of the necessary kernel elements, is used to compute the spectrum and Poincare-covariant wave functions for all flavor- SU (3) octet and decuplet baryons and their first positive-parity excitations. Such analyses predict the existence of nonpointlike, dynamical quark-quark (diquark) correlations within all baryons; and a uniformly sound description of the systems studied is obtained by retaining flavor-antitriplet-scalar and flavor-sextet-pseudovector diquarks. Thus constituted, the rest-frame wave function of every system studied is primarily S wave in character; and the fast positive-parity excitation of each octet or decuplet baryon exhibits the characteristics of a radial excitation. Importantly, every ground-state octet and decuplet baryon possesses a radial excitation. Hence, the analysis predicts the existence and masses of positive-parity excitations of the Ξ, Ξ*, and Ω baryons, states which have not yet been empirically identified. This body of analysis suggests that the expression of emergent mass generation is the same in all u , d , and s baryons and, notably, that dynamical quark-quark correlations play an essential role in the structure of each one. Furthermore, it also provides the basis for developing an array of predictions that can be tested in new generation experiments.

Anomaly-induced edge currents in hydrodynamics with parity anomaly

Here in this paper, we discuss relativistic hydrodynamics for a massless Dirac fermion in (2 + 1) dimensions, which has the parity anomaly—a global ’t Hooft anomaly between U(1) and parity symmetries. We investigate how hydrodynamics implements the party anomaly, particularly focusing on the transport phenomena at the boundary. Based on the parity anomaly matching and the second law of local thermodynamics, we find U(1) and entropy currents localized at the boundary, as well as the bulk anomalous current with vanishing divergence. These edge currents are similar to the ( 1 + 1)-dimensional chiral transports, but the coefficients are given by half of theirs. We also generalize our discussion to more general anomalies among multiple U(1) symmetries and single $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry.

Searching for parity violation in SDSS DR16 Lyman-α forest data

The four-point correlation function is the lowest order correlation function for scalar fields that can be used to probe statistical parity invariance in an isotropic universe. There are intriguing claims of detection of parity violation in the 4-point function of BOSS galaxy clustering data. We apply the same estimator to the public SDSS Data Release 16 Lyman-α forest data. Lyman-α forest data probes a different redshift range and is sensitive to a different density regime using a completely different technique. A detection would therefore be a strong indication of new physics. We identify an accurate covariance matrix as a crucial impediment to performing this measurement accurately, consistent with existing literature on galaxy 4-point function. Here, we discuss several approaches to estimating the covariance matrix, several of which produce spurious detection. Using a robust, but very suboptimal, covariance matrix derived from subsample bootstrapping, we find no evidence for parity violation.

First Determination of the Spin-Parity of Ξ c ( 3055 ) + , 0 Baryons

The Ξ b 0 ( − ) → Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) ( → D + ( 0 ) Λ ) π − decay chains are observed, and the spin-parity of Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) baryons is determined for the first time. The measurement is performed using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of s = 13 TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb − 1 , recorded by the LHCb experiment between 2016 and 2018. The spin-parity of the Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) baryons is determined to be 3 / 2 + with a significance of more than 6.5 σ ( 3.5 σ ) compared to all other tested hypotheses. The up-down asymmetries of the Ξ b 0 ( − ) → Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) π − transitions are measured to be − 0.92 ± 0.10 ± 0.05 ( − 0.92 ± 0.16 ± 0.22 ), consistent with maximal parity violation, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. These results support the hypothesis that the Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) baryons correspond to the first D -wave λ -mode excitation of the Ξ c flavor triplet. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2025 CERN

Deciphering spin-parity assignments of nuclear levels

Spin-parity assignments of nuclear levels are critical for understanding nuclear structure and reactions. However, inconsistent notation conventions and ambiguous reporting in research papers often lead to confusion and misinterpretations. Here, this paper examines the policies of the Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File (ENSDF) and the evaluations by Endt and collaborators, highlighting key differences in their approaches to spin-parity notation. Sources of confusion are identified, including ambiguous use of strong and weak arguments and the conflation of new experimental results with prior constraints. Recommendations are provided to improve clarity and consistency in reporting spin-parity assignments, emphasizing the need for explicit notation conventions, clear differentiation of argument strengths, community education, and separate reporting of new findings. These steps aim to enhance the accuracy and utility of nuclear data for both researchers and evaluators.

Parity and the modular bootstrap

We consider unitary, modular invariant, two-dimensional CFTs which are invariant under the parity transformation P P . Combining P P with modular inversion S S leads to a continuous family of fixed points of the SP S P transformation. A particular subset of this locus of fixed points exists along the line of positive left- and right-moving temperatures satisfying \beta_L \beta_R = 4\pi^2 β L β R = 4 π 2 . We use this fixed locus to prove a conjecture of Hartman, Keller, and Stoica that the free energy of a large- c c CFT _2 2 with a suitably sparse low-lying spectrum matches that of AdS _3 3 gravity at all temperatures and all angular potentials. We also use the fixed locus to generalize the modular bootstrap equations, obtaining novel constraints on the operator spectrum and providing a new proof of the statement that the twist gap is smaller than (c-1)/12 ( c − 1 ) / 12 when c>1 c > 1 . At large c c we show that the operator dimension of the first excited primary lies in a region in the (h,\overline{h}) ( h , h ¯ ) -plane that is significantly smaller than h+\overline{h} h + h ¯ > c / 6 . Our results for the free energy and constraints on the operator spectrum extend to theories without parity symmetry through the construction of an auxiliary parity-invariant partition function.

Hadronic parity violation in few-nucleon systems

The research performed under this award contributed to progress made in recent years in understanding the interplay of two fundamental forces, the strong and weak interactions, in nuclei. This information is valuable in achieving one of the main goals of nuclear physics - the understanding of how properties of nuclei can be linked to the underlying Standard Model. In particular, this project focused on the nonconservation of parity, which provides a unique signature of the highly suppressed weak interactions in the nuclear environment, as well as other symmetries. One major achievement of this project was the establishment of a hierarchy of the various parity-violating interactions, based on an approximation scheme that has proved highly successful in other nuclear physics applications. These results have significant implications for the analysis and interpretation of a number of experiments already performed, including at US National Laboratories, as well as for the planning of future experiments. The same methods were then also extended to the breaking of time reversal invariance. In addition, the project provided important input into a feasibility study of a possible future parity nonconservation experiment using polarized photon beams. Finally, this project addressed how to properly describe the possible violation of Lorentz invariance in terms of experimentally accessible particles and how they relate to the underlying theoretical framework in terms of Standard Model degrees of freedom.

Input-output, expandable-parity network

Large-scale integrated circuit generates and checks parity of four eight-bit registers. In addition, circuit will indicate by output signal whether parity error exists. Circuit can also generate or check parity of words up to 32 bits. This is done by making appropriate internal wiring connections on the large-scale integrated chip.

Generating parity relations for detecting and identifying control system component failures

The monitoring of control system sensors and actuators for failures is presently undertaken by means of an exceptionally simple form of generalized parity relations based on a discrete-time model of the dynamics of linear, time-invariant systems. These generalized parity relations are constructed by recourse to a transfer matrix-description of the system that is additionally useful in the interpretation of their properties. Attention is given to a novel method for constructing the parity relation of minimum length that depends on the output of only a single sensor.

Aperture Mask for Unambiguous Parity Determination in Long Wavelength Imagers

A document discusses a new parity pupil mask design that allows users to unambiguously determine the image space coordinate system of all the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) science instruments by using two out-of-focus images. This is an improvement over existing mask designs that could not completely eliminate the coordinate system parity ambiguity at a wavelength of 5.6 microns. To mitigate the problem of how the presence of diffraction artifacts can obscure the pupil mask detail, this innovation has been created with specifically designed edge features so that the image space coordinate system parity can be determined in the presence of diffraction, even at long wavelengths.

Neutron Skin Measurement of208Pb Using Parity-Violating Electron Scattering

Nuclear stability requires large nuclei to have more neutrons than protons. While the central core of the nucleus is composed of symmetric nuclear matter, the extra neutrons in heavy nuclei are pushed out to the surface of the nucleus, forming a pure outer neutron skin layer. While the proton distribution inside a nucleus has been accurately measured using electromagnetic probes, previous measurements of neutron distributions in complex nuclei have suffered a lack of systematic precision. PREX-2 and CREX use Parity-Violating electron Scattering (PVeS), as an electroweak interaction probe, to measure the neutron distributions in208Pb and48Ca, respectively. Making use of elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from unpolarized (isotopically pure) targets, PREX-2 and CREX measure the asymmetry in scattering rates between opposite beam polarization states. Since both experiments share the same exact measurement concept and apparatus, much of this dissertation applies to both PREX-2 and CREX. However, the presented asymmetry analysis and neutron skin extraction are only for PREX-2. PREX-2 measures the parity-violating asymmetry, APV, for 953 MeV electrons scattered elastically from208Pb at?5°in the lab. The final result is APV= 550.00±16.09(stat.)±8.16(syst.)ppb. From this measurement, we report the neutron skin thickness in208Pb nuclei to be, Rskin= 0.278±0.078(exp.)±0.012(model) fm. This measurement has broad implications throughout the physics community, increasing our knowledge in neutron star structure, the equation of state of nuclear matter, nuclear baryon density, nuclear electric dipole polarizability, and more. Second spectrum of Manganese (Mn II), Part I: Fine and hyperfine structure analysis of even-parity levels

We have taken advantage of the existence of some experimental Mn II hyperfine magnetic dipole constant (A) values given in literature with low uncertainties to achieve for a first time an accurate hyperfine structure (hfs) parametric study. The monoelectronic hfs parameter values were extracted in their entirety for the alone stable {sup 55}Mn II. For example for 3d{sup 4}4s configuration we obtain: a{sub 4s}{sup 10}=198.08 mk and a{sub 3d}{sup 01}=17.14 mk. These semi-empirically extracted single-electron parameters were analyzed and compared with ab-initio calculations. In this first part of a global work, devoted particularly to even-parity levels we have at beginning studied a fine structure of two hundred levels, giving their leading eigenvector percentages and their calculated Landé-factor g{sub J}. We present also predicted singlet, triplet and quintet positions of missing experimental levels up to 120 000 cm{sup −1}, not far from Mn II ionization energy of 126 000 cm{sup −1}. We close this work by giving predicted values of magnetic dipole hfs constants of all known levels of the most relevant Mn II even-parity configuration: 3d{sup 4}4s, whose splitting is not yet measured.

Shell structure of {sup 107,109}Ag nuclei and spin–parities nuclei in which the 1{sub g9/2} orbit is being filled

Occupation numbers and energies of proton and neutron orbits in the isotopes {sup 107}Ag and {sup 109}Ag were obtained on the basis of data on nucleon-stripping and nucleon-pickup reactions. A special data-analysis method reducing systematic and statistical uncertainties was applied in relevant calculations. It is shown that, in this region, the spin–parity of nuclei is determined by shells, pairing, and polarization. The schemes of proton and neutron (sub)orbits were constructed. These schemes explain the ground-state spin–parities of N, Z = 39–49 nuclei.

The R-parity violating decays of charginos and neutralinos in the B-L MSSM

The B - L MSSM is the MSSM with three right-handed neutrino chiral multiplets and gauged B - L symmetry. The B - L symmetry is broken by the third family right-handed sneutrino acquiring a VEV, thus spontaneously breaking R -parity. Within a natural range of soft supersymmetry breaking parameters, it is shown that a large and uncorrelated number of initial values satisfy all present phenomenological constraints; including the correct masses for the W ± , Z 0 bosons, having all sparticles exceeding their present lower bounds and giving the experimentally measured value for the Higgs boson. For this “valid” set of initial values, there are a number of different LSPs, each occurring a calculable number of times. We plot this statistically and determine that among the most prevalent LSPs are chargino and neutralino mass eigenstates. In this paper, the R -parity violating decay channels of charginos and neutralinos to standard model particles are determined, and the interaction vertices and decay rates computed analytically. These results are valid for any chargino and neutralino, regardless of whether or not they are the LSP. For chargino and neutralino LSPs, we will — in a subsequent series of papers — present a numerical study of their RPV decays evaluated statistically over the range of associated valid initial points.

Dark matter, dark radiation and gravitational waves from mirror Higgs parity

An exact parity replicates the Standard Model giving a Mirror Standard Model, SM ↔ SM ' . This “Higgs Parity” and the mirror electroweak symmetry are spontaneously broken by the mirror Higgs, ( H ' ) = v ' >> ( H ), yielding the Standard Model Higgs as a Pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone Boson of an approximate SU (4) symmetry, with a quartic coupling λ SM ( v ' ) ~ 10 - 3 . Mirror electromagnetism is unbroken and dark matter is composed of e ' and \( {\overline{e}}^{\prime } \) . Direct detection may be possible via the kinetic mixing portal, and in unified theories this rate is correlated with the proton decay rate. With a high reheat temperature after inflation, the e t dark matter abundance is determined by freeze-out followed by dilution from decays of mirror neutrinos, ν ' → ℓH . Remarkably, this requires v ' ~ (10 8 –10 10 ) GeV, predicting a Higgs mass of 123 ± 3 GeV at 1 σ and a Standard Model neutrino mass of (10 - 2 –10 - 1 ) eV, consistent with observed neutrino masses. The mirror QCD sector exhibits a first order phase transition producing gravitational waves that may be detected by future observations. Mirror glueballs decay to mirror photons giving dark radiation with Δ N eff ~ 0 . 03–0 . 4. With a low reheat temperature after inflation, the e ' dark matter abundance is determined by freeze-in from the SM sector by either the Higgs or kinetic mixing portal.

A search for R-parity-violating supersymmetry in final states containing many jets in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for R-parity-violating supersymmetry in final states with high jet multiplicity is presented. The search uses 140 fb –1 of proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider. The results are interpreted in the context of R-parity-violating supersymmetry models that feature prompt gluino-pair production decaying directly to three jets each or decaying to two jets and a neutralino which subsequently decays promptly to three jets. No significant excess over the Standard Model expectation is observed and exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level are extracted. Gluinos with masses up to 1800 GeV are excluded when decaying directly to three jets. In the cascade scenario, gluinos with masses up to 2340 GeV are excluded for a neutralino with mass up to 1250 GeV.

R-parity violating decays of Wino chargino and wino neutralino LSPs and NLSPs at the LHC

The R-parity violating decays of both Wino chargino and Wino neutralino LSPs are analyzed within the context of the B − L MSSM “heterotic standard model”. These LSPs correspond to statistically determined initial soft supersymmetry breaking parameters which, when evolved using the renormalization group equations, lead to an effective theory satisfying all phenomenological requirements; including the observed electroweak vector boson and Higgs masses. The explicit decay channels of these LSPs into standard model particles, the analytic and numerical decay rates and the associated branching ratios are presented. The decay lengths of these RPV interactions are discussed. It is shown that the vast majority of these decays are “prompt”, although a small, but calculable, number correspond to “displaced vertices” of various lengths. It is demonstrated that for a Wino chargino LSP, the NLSP is the Wino neutralino with a mass only slightly higher than the LSP — and vice-versa. As a consequence, we show that both the Wino chargino and Wino neutralino LSP/NLSP R-parity violating decays should be simultaneously observable at the CERN LHC.
