Search for new hadronic decays of $h_c$ and observation of $h_c$ → $p\overline{p}η$

A search for the hadronic decays of the $h_c$ meson to the final states $p\overline{p}π^+π^-π^o$, $p\overline{p}η$, and $p\overline{p}π^o$ via the process $\psi$(3686) → $π^oh_c$ is performed using (4.48 ± 0.03) x 10 8 $\psi$(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector. The decay channel $h_c$ → $p\overline{p}η$ is observed for the first time with a significance greater than 5σ and a branching fraction of (6.41 ± 1.74 ± 0.53 ± 1.00) x 10 -4 , where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and that from the branching fraction of $\psi$(3686) → $π^oh_c$. Strong evidence for the decay $h_c$ → $p\overline{p}π^+π^-π^o$ is found with a significance of 4.9σ and a branching fraction of (3.84 ± 0.83 ± 0.69 ± 0.58) x 10 -3 . The significances include systematic uncertainties. No clear signal of the decay $h_c$ → $p\overline{p}π^o$ is found, and an upper limit of 6.59 x 10 -4 on its branching fraction is set at the 90% confidence level.

Observation of χ c J → p p ¯ K S 0 K − π + + c . c .

By analyzing ( 27.12 ± 0.14 ) × 10 8 ψ ( 3686 ) events collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, the decays χ c J → p p ¯ K S 0 K − π + + c . c . ( J = 0 , 1 , 2 ) are observed for the first time with statistical significances greater than 10 σ . The branching fractions of these decays are determined to be B ( χ c 0 → p p ¯ K S 0 K − π + + c . c . ) = ( 2.61 ± 0.27 ± 0.32 ) × 10 − 5 , B ( χ c 1 → p p ¯ K S 0 K − π + + c . c . ) = ( 4.16 ± 0.24 ± 0.46 ) × 10 − 5 , and B ( χ c 2 → p p ¯ K S 0 K − π + + c . c . ) = ( 5.63 ± 0.28 ± 0.46 ) × 10 − 5 , respectively. The processes χ c 1 , 2 → p ¯ Λ ( 1520 ) K S 0 π + + c . c . are also observed, with statistical significances of 5.7 σ and 7.0 σ , respectively. Evidence for χ c 0 → p ¯ Λ ( 1520 ) K S 0 π + + c . c . is found with statistical significances of 3.3 σ . The corresponding branching fractions are determined to be B ( χ c 0 → p ¯ Λ ( 1520 ) K S 0 π + + c . c . ) = ( 1.6 1 − 0.64 + 0.68 ± 0.23 ) × 10 − 5 , B ( χ c 1 → p ¯ Λ ( 1520 ) K S 0 π + + c . c . ) = ( 4.06 − 0.76 + 0.80 ± 0.52 ) × 10 − 5 , and B ( χ c 2 → p ¯ Λ ( 1520 ) K S 0 π + + c . c . ) = ( 4.0 9 − 0.84 + 0.87 ± 0.42 ) × 10 − 5 . Thermonuclear 28 P(p, γ ) 29 S reaction rate and astrophysical implication in ONe nova explosion

An accurate 28 P(p, γ) 29 S reaction rate is crucial to defining the nucleosynthesis products of explosive hydrogen burning in ONe novae. Using the recently released nuclear mass of 29 S, together with a shell model and a direct capture calculation, we reanalyzed the 28 P(p, γ) 29 S thermonuclear reaction rate and its astrophysical implication. We focus on improving the astrophysical rate for 28 P(p, γ) 29 S based on the newest nuclear mass data. Our goal is to explore the impact of the new rate and associated uncertainties on the nova nucleosynthesis. We evaluated this reaction rate via the sum of the isolated resonance contribution instead of the previously used Hauser-Feshbach statistical model. The corresponding rate uncertainty at different energies was derived using a Monte Carlo method. Nova nucleosynthesis is computed with the 1D hydrodynamic code SHIVA. The contribution from the capture on the first excited state at 105.64 keV in 28 P is taken into account for the first time. We find that the capture rate on the first excited state in 28 P is up to more than 12 times larger than the ground-state capture rate in the temperature region of 2.5 × 10 7 K to 4 × 10 8 K, resulting in the total 28 P(p, γ) 29 S reaction rate being enhanced by a factor of up to 1.4 at ~1 × 10 9 K. In addition, the rate uncertainty has been quantified for the first time. It is found that the new rate is smaller than the previous statistical model rates, but it still agrees with them within uncertainties for nova temperatures. The statistical model appears to be roughly valid for the rate estimation of this reaction in the nova nucleosynthesis scenario. Using the 1D hydrodynamic code SHIVA, we performed the nucleosynthesis calculations in a nova explosion to investigate the impact of the new rates of 28 P(p, γ) 29 S. Our calculations show that the nova abundance pattern is only marginally affected if we use our new rates with respect to the same simulations but statistical model rates. Finally, the isotopes whose abundance is most influenced by the present 28 P(p, γ) 29 S uncertainty are 28 Si, 33,34 S, 35,37 Cl, and 36 Ar, with relative abundance changes at the level of only 3% to 4%.

Search for the rare hadronic decay $B^0_s → p\overline{p}$

A search for the rare hadronic decay B s 0 → p p ¯ is performed using proton-proton collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb - 1 . No evidence of the decay is found and an upper limit on its branching fraction is set at B ( B s 0 → p p ¯ ) < 4.4 ( 5.1 ) × 10 - 9 at 90% (95%) confidence level; this is currently the world’s best upper limit. The decay mode B 0 → p p ¯ is measured with very large significance, confirming the first observation by the LHCb experiment in 2017. The branching fraction is determined to be B ( B 0 → p p ¯ ) = ( 1.27 ± 0.15 ± 0.05 ± 0.04 ) × 10 - 8 , where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is due to the external branching fraction of the normalization channel B 0 → K + π - . The combination of the two LHCb measurements of the B 0 → p p ¯ branching fraction yields B ( B 0 → p p ¯ ) = ( 1.27 ± 0.13 ± 0.05 ± 0.03 ) × 10 - 8 .

Role of Silica Support in Phosphoric Acid Catalyzed Production of p -Xylene from 2,5-Dimethylfuran and Ethylene

p-Xylene is a commodity chemical of industrial importance for terephthalic acid production, for which renewable sourcing from naturally abundant lignocellulosic biomass is highly desired. Previous work demonstrated that phosphoric acid stabilized on siliceous zeolite supports (e.g., P-BEA, P-SPP) exhibits high selectivity toward p-xylene (>97%) from 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) and ethylene. However, the effect of the support and the contribution of heterogeneous versus homogeneous phosphoric acid on the observed catalytic behavior in the solvated reaction system have not been addressed. Here, we determine the phosphoric acid catalytic activity for DMF conversion and its selectivity to p-xylene when it is supported on a silica support as well as in the absence of a support. Specifically, phosphoric acid catalysis was studied in three different scenarios: (1) phosphoric acid was added in the liquid reaction mixture in the absence of any solid support, (2) phosphoric acid was added in the liquid reaction mixture along with inert silica support including siliceous zeolite (i.e., allowing for phosphoric acid–support assembly to proceed in the reaction mixture), and (3) phosphoric acid was first impregnated on the siliceous zeolite support and then the preassembled supported phosphoric acid catalyst was added in the liquid reaction mixture. We found that the reaction rate and selectivity to p-xylene are different in the above scenarios reflecting the effect of the solid support on the catalytic performance of phosphoric acid. In scenario 1, a low concentration of phosphoric acid (1.7 mM) in the absence of any solid support exhibited high selectivity to p-xylene (80% selectivity to p-xylene at 60% conversion of DMF), which decreased with increasing acid concentration. The selectivity to p-xylene and activity of phosphoric acid significantly increased by adding a silica support into the reaction system (scenario 2). Furthermore, this improvement was attributed to phosphoric acid partial association with the surface of the silica support under the reaction conditions (in situ catalyst assembly). Phosphoric acid predeposited on siliceous zeolite supports (e.g., P-BEA, P-SPP) synthesized via impregnation prior to the reaction (scenario 3) catalyzed the reaction heterogeneously without noticeable leaching and exhibited the highest activity and selectivity to p-xylene, suggesting an important role of the silica support and the need to ensure that phosphoric acid acts as a heterogeneous catalyst in order to accomplish selective conversion of DMF to p-xylene.

New 26 P( p, γ ) 27 S Thermonuclear Reaction Rate and Its Astrophysical Implications in the rp -process

Accurate nuclear reaction rates for 26 P(p, γ) 27 S are pivotal for a comprehensive understanding of the rp-process nucleosynthesis path in the region of proton-rich sulfur and phosphorus isotopes. However, large uncertainties still exist in the current rate of 26 P(p, γ) 27 S because of the lack of nuclear mass and energy level structure information for 27 S. We reevaluate this reaction rate using the experimentally constrained 27 S mass, together with the shell model predicted level structure. It is found that the 26 P(p, γ) 27 S reaction rate is dominated by a direct capture reaction mechanism despite the presence of three resonances at E = 1.104, 1.597, and 1.777 MeV above the proton threshold in 27 S. The new rate is overall smaller than the other previous rates from the Hauser–Feshbach statistical model by at least 1 order of magnitude in the temperature range of X-ray burst interest. In addition, we consistently update the photodisintegration rate using the new 27 S mass. The influence of new rates of forward and reverse reaction in the abundances of isotopes produced in the rp-process is explored by postprocessing nucleosynthesis calculations. The final abundance ratio of 27 S/ 26 P obtained using the new rates is only 10% of that from the old rate. The abundance flow calculations show that the reaction path 26 P(p, γ) 27 S(β + ,ν) 27 P is not as important as previously thought for producing 27 P. The adoption of the new reaction rates for 26 P(p, γ) 27 S only reduces the final production of aluminum by 7.1% and has no discernible impact on the yield of other elements.

Synthesis and structural characterization of the new Zintl phases Ba 3 Cd 2 P 4 and Ba 2 Cd 2 P 3 . Rare example of small gap semiconducting behavior with negative thermopower within the range 300 K-700 K

The new Zintl phases Ba 3 Cd 2 P 4 and Ba 2 Cd 2 P 3 have been synthesized using Pb flux, which allowed for the growth of 4-5 mm large crystals. The structures were determined utilizing single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Both compounds crystalize in the monoclinic crystal system (space group C2/m (No. 12)) and their structures are closely related. The structure of Ba 3 Cd 2 P 4 can be seen as being comprised of divalent Ba atoms and conjoined CdP 4 tetrahedra in the form of [Cd 2 P 4 ] 6- layers. Within the layers, homoatomic P–P bonds are present, which if cleaved, leave two infinite [CdP 3 ] 7- chains running along the crystallographic b-axis. The other structure, that of Ba 2 Cd 2 P 3 , can be rationalized as also having divalent Ba atoms and conjoined CdP4 tetrahedra in the form of [Cd 2 P 3 ] 6- layers. These layers, again, can be visualized as chains that run down the crystallographic b-axis, which are further connected by P-P dimers. Electronic band structure calculations show that each structure has an optimal number of valence electrons, and therefore conform to the Zintl-Klemm concept. Accordingly, the two compounds can be considered small band gap semiconductors, with band gaps of ca. 0.1 eV and 0.6 eV for Ba3Cd2P4 and Ba 2 Cd 2 P 3 , respectively. Electrical resistivity measurements show that Ba3Cd2P4 displays a large resistivity value at room temperature and an experimental band gap of ca. 0.05 eV, which fits reasonably well with the theoretical predictions. Thermopower measurements show that throughout the temperature range 300 K-700 K, Ba 3 Cd 2 P 4 displays a negative Seebeck coefficient. Here, the extremum value of -84 μV is reached at 630 K, suggestive of an n-type semiconductor, a rarity among Zintl phases.

Systematic study of nuclear effects in p + Al , p + Au , d + Au , and He 3 + Au collisions at s N N = 200 GeV using π 0 production

The PHENIX Collaboration presents a systematic study of inclusive π 0 production from p + p , p + Al , p + Au , d + Au , and He 3 + Au collisions at s N N = 200 GeV . Measurements were performed with different centrality selections as well as the total inelastic, 0–100%, selection for all collision systems. For 0–100% collisions, the nuclear-modification factors, R x A , are consistent with unity for p T above 8 GeV / c , but exhibit an enhancement in peripheral collisions and a suppression in central collisions. The enhancement and suppression characteristics are similar for all systems for the same centrality class. It is shown that for high- p T - π 0 production, the nucleons in the d and He 3 interact mostly independently with the Au nucleus and that the counterintuitive centrality dependence is likely due to a physical correlation between multiplicity and the presence of a hard scattering process. These observations disfavor models where parton energy loss has a significant contribution to nuclear modifications in small systems. Nuclear modifications at lower p T resemble the Cronin effect—an increase followed by a peak in central or inelastic collisions and a plateau in peripheral collisions. The peak height has a characteristic ordering by system size as p + Au > d + Au > He 3 + Au > p + Al . For collisions with Au ions, current calculations based on initial-state cold nuclear matter effects result in the opposite order, suggesting the presence of other contributions to nuclear modifications, in particular at lower p T .

Two Polymorphs of BaZn 2 P 2 : Crystal Structures, Phase Transition, and Transport Properties

Here, the novel α-BaZn 2 P 2 structural polymorph has been synthesized and structurally characterized for the first time. Its structure, elu-cidated from single crystal X-ray diffraction, indicates that the compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic α-BaCu 2 S 2 structure type, with unit cell parameters a = 9.7567(14) Å, b = 4.1266(6) Å, and c = 10.6000(15) Å. With β-BaZn 2 P 2 being previously iden-tified as belonging to the ThCr 2 Si 2 family, and with the precedent of structural phase transitions between the α-BaCu 2 S 2 type and the ThCr 2 Si 2 type, the potential for the pattern to be extended to the two different structural forms of BaZn 2 P 2 was explored. Thermal analysis suggest that a first order phase transition occurs at ~1123 K, whereby the low-temperature orthorhombic α-phase transforms to a high-temperature tetragonal β-BaZn 2 P 2 ; the structure of which was also studied and confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Preliminary transport properties and band structure calculations indicate that α-BaZn 2 P 2 is a p-type, narrow-gap semiconductor with a direct bandgap (Eg) of 0.5 eV. The Seebeck coefficient, S(T), for the material increases steadily from the room temperature value of 119 µV/K to 184 µV/K at 600 K. The electrical resistivity of α-BaZn 2 P 2 is relatively high, on the order of 40 mΩ·cm, and the ρ(T) dependence shows gradual decrease upon heating. Such behavior is comparable to those of the typical semimetals or degenerate semiconductors. Although the observed values of the as-synthesized samples are not optimal, the carrier concentration can apparently be tuned to fall between the values of metals and semiconductors, thus providing an open window for optimizing this phase towards achieving an enhanced thermoelectric figure of merit zT. The calculated indirect band gap for the β-BaZn 2 P 2 phase is Eg = 0.03 eV which is about an order of magnitude lower than that of α-BaZn 2 P 2 . It is expected that the cage-like structural motif and layered structure possessed by α-BaZn 2 P 2 and β-BaZn 2 P 2 phases, respectively, would promote the realiza-tion of a low thermal conductivity in both compounds.

Measurement of $\phi $ meson production in $p + p$ interactions at 40, 80 and $158 \, \hbox {GeV}/c$ with the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS

Results on $\phi$ meson production in inelastic p+p collisions at CERN SPS energies are presented. They are derived from data collected by the NA61/SHINE fixed target experiment, by means of invariant mass spectra fits in the $\phi \to K^+K^-$ decay channel. They include the first ever measured double differential spectra of $\phi$ mesons as a function of rapidity $y$ and transverse momentum $p_T$ for proton beam momenta of 80 GeV/c and 158 GeV/c, as well as single differential spectra of $y$ or $p_T$ for beam momentum of 40 GeV/c. The corresponding total $\phi$ yields per inelastic p+p event are obtained. These results are compared with existing data on $\phi$ meson production in p+p collisions. The comparison shows consistency but superior accuracy of the present measurements. The emission of $\phi$ mesons in p+p reactions is confronted with that occurring in Pb+Pb collisions, and the experimental results are compared with model predictions. It appears that none of the considered models can properly describe all the experimental observables.

Measurements of J/ ψ Production vs. Event Multiplicity in Forward Rapidity in p + p Collisions in the PHENIX Experiment

J / Ψ, a charmonium bound state made of a charm and an anti-charm quark, was discovered in the 1970s and confirmed the quark model. Because the mass of charm quarks is significantly above the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) scale Λ QCD , charmonia are considered excellent probes to test perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) calculations. In recent decades, they have been studied extensively at different high-energy colliders. However, their production mechanisms, which involve multiple scales, are still not very well understood. Recently, in high-multiplicity p + p collisions at RHIC and at the LHC, a significant enhancement of J / Ψ production yield has been observed, which suggests a strong contribution of multi-parton interaction (MPI). This is different from the traditional pQCD picture, where charm quark pairs are produced from a single hard scattering between partons in p + p collisions. In this work, we will report the J / Ψ normalized production yield as a function of normalized charged particle multiplicity over a board range of rapidity and event multiplicity in the J / Ψ → μ + μ – channel with PHENIX Run 15 p + p data at $\sqrt s$ =200 GeV. The results are compared with PYTHIA 8 simulations with the MPI option turned on and off. Finally, the outlooks of J / Ψ in p + Au and Au + p collisions, along with color glass condensate (CGC) predictions and the multiplicity-dependent Ψ(2S) /J / Ψ ratio in p + p data, will be briefly discussed.

Underlying event measurements in p + p collisions at s = 200 GeV at RHIC

In this work, particle production sensitive to non-factorizable and non-perturbative processes that contribute to the underlying event associated with a high transverse momentum (p T ) jet in proton+proton collisions at p √s=200 GeV is studied with the STAR detector. Each event is divided into three regions based on the azimuthal angle with respect to the highest-p T jet direction: in the leading jet direction ("Toward"), opposite to the leading jet ("Away"), and perpendicular to the leading jet 3 ("Transverse"). In the Transverse region, the average charged particle density is found to be between 0.4 and 0.6 and the mean transverse momentum,$\langle$p T $\rangle$, between 0.5-0.7 GeV/c for particles with p T >0.2 GeV/c at mid-pseudorapidity (|η|<1) and jet p T >15 GeV/c. Both average particle density and $\langle$p T $\rangle$ depend weakly on the leading jet p T . Closer inspection of the Transverse region hints that contributions to the underlying event from initial- and final-state radiation are significantly smaller in these collisions than at the higher energies, up to 13 TeV, recorded at the LHC. Underlying event measurements associated with a high-p T jet will contribute to our understanding of QCD processes at hard and soft scales at RHIC energies, as well as provide constraints to modeling of underlying event dynamics.

Production of Biomass–Derived p –Hydroxybenzamide: Synthesis of p –Aminophenol and Paracetamol

As we work to transition the modern society that is based on non-renewable chemical feedstocks to a post-modern society built around renewable sources of energy, fuels, and chemicals, there is a need to identify the renewable resources and processes for converting them to platform chemicals. Herein, we explore a strategy for utilizing the p-hydroxybenzoate in biomass feedstocks (e.g., poplar and palm trees) and converting it into a portfolio of commodity chemicals. The targeted bio-derived product in the first processing stage is p-hydroxybenzamide produced from p-hydroxybenzoate esters found in the plant. In the second stage a continuous reaction process converts the p-hydroxybenzamide to p-aminophenol via the Hofmann rearrangement and recovers the unreacted p-hydroxybenzamide. In the third stage the p-aminophenol can be acetylated to form paracetamol, which is readily isolated by liquid/liquid extraction at >95 % purity and an overall p-hydroxybenzamide-to-paracetamol process yield of ~90 %. We explore how utilization of protecting groups alters the challenges in this process and expands the portfolio of possible products to include p-(methoxymethoxy)aniline and N-acetyl-p-(methoxymethoxy)aniline. These target compounds could become value-added renewably-sourced platform chemicals that could be used to produce biodegradable plastics, pigments, and pharmaceuticals.

Measurement of the 230 Th( p ,2n)Pa229 and 230 Th( p ,3n)Pa228 reaction cross sections from 14.1 to 16.9 MeV

Actinium-225 is of interest for medical isotope production and there is on-going research into methods of producing Ac 225 , either directly or via the decay of its parent isotopes ( Th 229 , Pa 229 , and Ra 225 ). One method that has been suggested is the Th 230 ( p , 2 n ) Pa 229 reaction. However, there is no available cross-section data for this reaction in the literature. Purpose: Measure the Th 230 ( p , 2 n ) and Th 230 ( p , 3 n ) reaction cross sections in the energy range where the ( p , 2 n ) reaction is predicted to peak to determine the feasibility of Ac 225 production via the Th 230 ( p , 2 n ) reaction. Methods: Targets naturally enriched in Th 230 were irradiated at the Center for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory with energies ranging from 14.1 to 16.9 MeV. Furthermore, chemical processing was used to separate the protactinium activation products, followed by γ -ray spectroscopy to measure the activities of Pa 228 , 229 , 230 , 232 produced in the irradiation. Results: We find that excitation functions are reported for the first time in the literature for the Th 230 ( p , 2 n ) and Th 230 ( p , 3 n ) reactions in this energy range. The peak measured value of the Th 230 ( p , 2 n ) reaction was found to be 182 ± 12 mb at 14.4 ± 0.1 MeV. The Th 232 ( p , n ) Pa 232 reaction was used to verify the experimental conditions, the measured values are reported and are comparable to the existing literature values. From the γ -ray spectrometry data, the half-life of Pa 229 was measured as 1.5 ± 0.1 days, which is within the error of the half-life reported in the evaluated nuclear data as well as in the recent measurements, and the half-life of Pa 228 was measured as 19.5 ± 0.4 hours. Conclusions: Overall, the Th 230 ( p , 2 n ) Pa 229 reaction could reasonably be used for Ac 225 isotope production, although significant amounts of relatively isotopically pure Th 230 would be needed for significant production because the low alpha-decay branching ratio of Pa 229 and long half-life of Th 229 inhibit the in-growth of significant amounts of Ac 225 .

Search for resonance-enhanced C P and angular asymmetries in the Λ c + → p μ + μ − decay at LHCb

The first measurement of the C P asymmetry of the decay rate ( A C P ) and the C P average ( Σ A FB ) and C P asymmetry ( Δ A FB ) of the forward-backward asymmetry in the muon system of Λ c + → p μ + μ − decays is reported. The measurement is performed using a data sample of proton-proton collisions, recorded by the LHCb experiment from 2016 to 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb − 1 . The asymmetries are measured in two regions of dimuon mass near the ϕ -meson mass peak. The dimuon-mass integrated results are A C P = ( − 1.1 ± 4.0 ± 0.5 ) % , Σ A FB = ( 3.9 ± 4.0 ± 0.6 ) % , Δ A FB = ( 3.1 ± 4.0 ± 0.4 ) % , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The results are consistent with the conservation of C P symmetry and the Standard Model expectations. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2025 CERN

Measurement of groomed jet substructure observables in p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 200 GeV with STAR

In this letter, measurements of the shared momentum fraction ( z g ) and the groomed jet radius ( R g ), as defined in the SoftDrop algorithm, are reported in p+p collisions at s = 200 GeV collected by the STAR experiment. These substructure observables are differentially measured for jets of varying resolution parameters from R = 0.2 – 0.6 in the transverse momentum range 15 < p T , jet < 60 GeV/ c . These studies show that, in the p T , jet range accessible at s = 200 GeV and with increasing jet resolution parameter and jet transverse momentum, the z g distribution asymptotically converges to the DGLAP splitting kernel for a quark radiating a gluon. The groomed jet radius measurements reflect a momentum-dependent narrowing of the jet structure for jets of a given resolution parameter, i.e., the larger the p T , jet , the narrower the first splitting. For the first time, these fully corrected measurements are compared to Monte Carlo generators with leading order QCD matrix elements and leading log in the parton shower, and to state-of-the-art theoretical calculations at next-to-leading-log accuracy. We observe that PYTHIA 6 with parameters tuned to reproduce RHIC measurements is able to quantitatively describe data, whereas PYTHIA 8 and HERWIG 7, tuned to reproduce LHC data, are unable to provide a simultaneous description of both z g and R g , resulting in opportunities for fine parameter tuning of these models for p+p collisions at RHIC energies. We also find that the theoretical calculations without non-perturbative corrections are able to qualitatively describe the trend in data for jets of large resolution parameters at high p T , jet , but fail at small jet resolution parameters and low jet transverse momenta.

Measurements of the $Z$ 0 /$γ$* cross section and transverse single spin asymmetry in 510 GeV $p$ + $p$ collisions

The differential cross section for Z 0 production, measured as a function of the boson’s transverse momentum (p T ), provides important constraints on the evolution of the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs). The transverse single spin asymmetry (TSSA) of the Z 0 is sensitive to one of the polarized TMDs, the Sivers function, which is predicted to have the opposite sign in p + p → W/Z + X from that which enters in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. In this Letter, the STAR Collaboration reports the first measurement of the Z 0 /γ* differential cross section as a function of its p T in p+p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 510 GeV, together with the Z 0 /γ* total cross section. We also report the measurement of Z 0 /γ* TSSA in transversely polarized p+p collisions at 510 GeV.
