Data report for tests on the heat transfer effects of the 0.0175-scale Rockwell International Space Shuttle Vehicle model 22-OT in the AEDC 50-inch B wind tunnel (OH4B), volume 3

Results of wind tunnel heat transfer tests of 0.0175-scale Rockwell International Space Shuttle Vehicle configurations for orbiter alone, tank alone, and orbiter plus external tank are presented. Body flap shielding of SSME's during simulated entry was also investigated. The tests were conducted at Mach 8 for thirteen Reynolds number per foot values ranging from 0.5 million to 3.72 million.

Results of oil flow visualization tests of an 0.010-scale model (52-OT) of the space shuttle orbiter-tank mated and orbiter configurations in the AEDC VKF tunnel B (IA17B)

An 0.010-scale model of the space shuttle (orbiter-tank mated and orbiter configurations) was tested in the AEDC VKF Tunnel B to investigate aerodynamic flow patterns. The tests utilized oil flow techniques to visualize the flow patterns. Tunnel free stream Mach number was 7.95 and nominal unit Reynolds number was 3.7 million per foot. Model angle of attack was varied from -5 deg through 10 deg and angle of sideslip was 0 deg and 2 deg. Photographs of resulting oil flow patterns are presented.

Airloads investigation of an 0.030-scale model of the space shuttle vehicle 140A/B launch configuration (model 47-OTS) in the arc 11-foot unitary plan wind tunnel for Mach range 0.6 to 1.4 (IA14A), Volume 2

Results of tests conducted on an 0.030-scale launch configuration model of the space shuttle vehicle 140A/B in the NASA/ARC 11-foot unitary plan wind tunnel are presented. Aerodynamic loads data were obtained at Mach numbers from 0.6 to 1.4. Surface pressure distributions were obtained simultaneously with six-component stability and control force data on the complete launch configuration. The configuration consisted of the orbiter, an external tank, two solid rocket boosters, and associated intercomponent attach hardware. Angles of attack and sideslip from -10 degrees to +10 degrees were investigated.

Airloads investigation of an 0.030-scale model of the space shuttle vehicle 140A/B launch configuration (model 47-OTS) in the arc 11-foot unitary plan wind tunnel for Mach range 0.6 to 1.4 (IA14A), volume 1

The results of the tests are presented along with aerodynamic loads data obtained at Mach numbers from 0.6 to 1.4. Surface pressure distributions were obtained simultaneously with six-component stability and control force data on the complete launch configuration. The configuration consisted of the orbiter, an external tank, two solid rocket boosters, and associated intercomponent attach hardware. Angles of attack and sideslip from -10 deg to +10 deg were investigated. The tests were conducted from 4 September 1973 through 13 September 1973.

Wind tunnel tests of an 0.019-scale space shuttle integrated vehicle -2A configuration (model 14-OTS) in the NASA Ames 8 by 7 foot unitary wind tunnel (IA12C), volume 1

The purpose of the test was to determine the effects of cold jet gas plumes on (1) the integrated vehicle longitudinal and lateral-directional force data, (2) exposed wing hinge moment, (3) wing pressure distributions, (4) orbiter MPS external pressure distributions, and (5) model base pressure. The similarity between solid and gaseous plumes was investigated, and fluorescent oil flow visualization studies were conducted.

Airloads investigation of an 0.030 scale model of the space shuttle vehicle 140A/B launch configuration (model 47-OTS) in the ARC 9 by 7 foot unitary plan wind tunnel for Mach 1.55 and 2.2 (iA14B), volume 1

Tests were conducted in September, 1973 on a launch vehicle configuration consisting of a space shuttle orbiter, an external tank, two solid rocket boosters, and associated intercomponent attach hardware. Model variables included elevon, rudder, and speed brake deflections. Aerodynamic loads were measured and surface pressure distributions were obtained simultaneously with six-component stability and control force data on the complete configuration. Results of transonic wind tunnel tests on an 0.010-scale space shuttle mated vehicle model 72-OTS in the LaRC 8-foot TPT (IA43)

Experimental aerodynamic investigations were conducted in NASA/Langley 8-Foot transonic pressure tunnel on a sting mounted 0.010-scale outer mold line model of 104A/B configuration of the Rockwell International space shuttle vehicle. Component aerodynamic force and moment data and base and balance cavity pressures were recorded over an angle of attack range of -10 deg to +10 deg at Mach numbers of 0.6, 0.8, 0.9, 0.98, 1.13, and 1.2. Selected configurations were tested at sideslip angles from -10 deg to +10 deg. For all configurations involving the orbit, wing bending and torsion were measured on the right wing. Inboard elevon setting of 0 deg, +4 deg and +8 deg and outboard settings of 0 deg, +4 deg and +8 deg were tested.
