Rephasing spectral diffusion in time-bin spin-spin entanglement protocols

Generating high-fidelity spin-spin entanglement is an essential task of quantum repeater networks for the distribution of quantum information across long distances. Solid-state-based spin-photon interfaces are promising candidates to realize nodes of a quantum network, but are often limited by spectral diffusion of the optical transition, which results in phase errors on the entangled states. Here, we introduce a method to correct phase errors from quasi-static frequency fluctuations after the entangled state is generated, by shelving the emitters in the excited state to refocus the unknown phase. For quasi-static frequency fluctuations, the fidelity is determined only by the lifetime of the excited state used for shelving, making it particularly suitable for systems with a long-lived shelving state with correlated spectral diffusion. Such a shelving state may be found in Kramers doublet systems such as rare-earth emitters and color centers in Si or SiC interfaced with nanophotonic cavities with a strongly frequency-dependent Purcell enhancement. Furthermore, the protocol can be used to generate high-fidelity entangled spin pairs without reducing the rate of entanglement generation.

Distilling the Essential Elements of Nuclear Binding via Neural-Network Quantum States

To distill the essential elements of nuclear binding, we seek the simplest Hamiltonian capable of modeling atomic nuclei with percent-level accuracy. A critical aspect of this endeavor consists of accurately solving the quantum many-body problem without incurring an exponential computing cost with the number of nucleons. Furthermore, we address this challenge by leveraging a variational Monte Carlo method based on a highly expressive neural-network quantum state ansatz. In addition to computing binding energies and charge radii of nuclei with up to 𝐴 = 20 nucleons, by evaluating their magnetic moments, we demonstrate that neural-network quantum states are able to correctly capture the self-emerging nuclear shell structure. To this end, we introduce a novel computational protocol based on adding an external magnetic field to the nuclear Hamiltonian, which allows the neural network to learn the preferred polarization of the nucleus within the given magnetic field.

Quantum Network Repeater Simulation Package (QNPack) v1.0.0

Existing quantum network testbeds and prototypes are typically implemented in laboratory experiments with limited functionality and operate in a tightly coupled manner. These characteristics make it difficult to evaluate the behavior of emerging quantum platforms and protocols beyond local resource limitations. The QNPack software enables full-stack modeling of quantum repeater networks that allows researchers to simulate new approaches, and understand emergent behaviors, from local to national scales. Novel capabilities include: (1) performant and accurate quantum models that can be executed as independent simulations, which will allow users to characterize specific analog quantum processes, quantum devices, and protocols, (2) a modular and extensible approach to the simulation architecture to accommodate new quantum technologies, protocols, and topologies as they are developed across the quantum repeater generations under evaluation, and (3) a focus on managing the interactions between the simulation framework sub-components so that they may be re-used and composed in flexible ways.

Simulation of a Wireless Authentication Protocol

Abstract—A wireless authentication protocol that employs timeslots and associated frequency-channels (APEC) is simulated using Python as the simulation environment and implemented into radio hardware as a proof of concept. The APEC protocol does not rely on the use of challenge-response, multifactor authentication schemes but relies instead on the physical properties of a wireless signal. The APEC protocol provides opportunities for real-time deployment in cell phone network infrastructure, as well as in adverse civil and military applications. Description of the APEC implementation and the corresponding results of the simulation study are presented.

ChargeX OCPI Recommendations

The Open Charge Point Interface (OCPI) is an open protocol that enables electric vehicle (EV) charging systems to work together across networks. It supports communication and data sharing between Charge Point Operators (CPOs), who manage charging stations, and e-Mobility Service Providers (eMSPs), who provide charging services to EV drivers. OCPI facilitates functions like user authorization, remote charge point control, charging session data exchange, and billing through Charge Detail Records (CDRs). This allows EV roaming, so drivers can charge at different networks without multiple accounts. As the EV market grows due to increased adoption and technological advancements, OCPI faces higher demands. This has revealed issues with CDR format consistency, timestamp standardization across regions, transmission of EV-side error codes for troubleshooting, and support for new use cases. These challenges can affect operations and user experience, particularly as the industry starts considering Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) systems, where EVs supply energy to the grid, and Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technologies for broader energy interactions. Using feedback from the ChargeX Diagnostics taskforce discussions, industry 1-on-1 meetings, technical standards, and OCPI’s evolution through versions (e.g., OCPI 2.1.1, 2.2, and 2.2.1), this report identifies these issues and suggests practical recommendations. These aim to improve interoperability, streamline operations, and prepare OCPI for future trends in the EV charging ecosystem.

Degrees of Rate Control in Interconnected Reaction Networks

Overall reactions in interconnected networks exhibit net, forward, and reverse rates that are governed by both constitutive elementary steps in the pathway of interest and branching elementary steps that lead to alternative products. Accordingly, steps in branching pathways exhibit negative net, forward, and reverse degrees of rate control, as they reduce reaction flux to the desired product. We here contextualize the forward and reverse degrees of rate control in terms of kinetic resistances (inverse of rates) and leverage the additive nature of kinetic resistance to decouple kinetic driving forces contributed by constitutive elementary steps and branching points (nodal species) in interconnected networks. Regardless of the network connectivity, forward and reverse degrees of rate control are shown to converge at equilibrium. Away from equilibrium, we identify two critical features of interconnected networks: stoichiometric regularity─condition where all stoichiometric numbers are unity─and pathway symmetry around nodal species─condition where branching pathways share the same rate constants, stoichiometry, and species concentrations/activities─that result in (i) equal forward, reverse, and consequently net degrees of rate control and (ii) forward and reverse degrees of rate control that exhibit constant offsets, respectively, across all extents of reaction. Furthermore, our discourse further provides a mathematical description for the influence of stoichiometric irregularity and pathway asymmetry on forward and reverse degrees of rate control. Altogether, the presented work details the effects of network (inter)connectivity and stoichiometry on reaction kinetics and, in doing so, establishes general protocols for capturing these effects as additive terms in the formulation of forward and reverse degrees of rate control.

Data for Autonomous Transportation Awareness: Data Exchange Use Cases, Standards, and Barriers

This report examines the critical data exchanges between automated vehicle (AV) service providers and the cities and municipalities they serve. It assists municipal authorities in navigating the often complex and real-time digital data exchanges needed to support AV mobility services, with emphasis in three areas: (1) critical safety data for broad-area situational awareness of hazards typically associated emergency dispatch or roadway work zones; (2) performance metrics of AV services that inform the quantity, quality, spatial extents, and impact on the roadway network; and (3) regulatory and policy information, particularly dynamic information that governs how AV services interact with the roadway network, with emphasis on curb space. The report reviews existing practices and emerging protocols and standards and identifies key gaps to address moving forward.

Neural refinement of sample weights

Monte Carlo simulations are an essential tool in particle physics data analysis. Events are typically generated alongside weights that redistribute the cross section of the simulated process across the phase space. These weights can be negative, and several post hoc methods have been developed to eliminate or mitigate the negative values. All of these methods share the common strategy of approximating the average weight as a function of phase space. We introduce an alternative approach, which, instead of reweighting to the average, refines the initial weights with a scaling transformation, utilizing a phase space-dependent factor. Since this new refinement method does not need to model the full weight distribution, it can be more accurate. High-dimensional and unbinned phase space is processed using neural networks for the refinement method. In addition to the refinement method, we introduce a new resampling protocol, which can be used in conjunction with any weight transformation to not only preserve the average weight but also the statistical uncertainties of the initial distribution. Using both realistic and synthetic examples, we show that the new neural refinement method is able to match or exceed the accuracy of similar weight transformations and that the new resampling protocol is simpler in implementation than previous methods while exhibiting equivalent statistical properties.

Enhanced quantum state transfer by circumventing quantum chaotic behavior

The ability to realize high-fidelity quantum communication is one of the many facets required to build generic quantum computing devices. In addition to quantum processing, sensing, and storage, transferring the resulting quantum states demands a careful design that finds no parallel in classical communication. Existing experimental demonstrations of quantum information transfer in solid-state quantum systems are largely confined to small chains with few qubits, often relying upon non-generic schemes. Here, by using a superconducting quantum circuit featuring thirty-six tunable qubits, accompanied by general optimization procedures deeply rooted in overcoming quantum chaotic behavior, we demonstrate a scalable protocol for transferring few-particle quantum states in a two-dimensional quantum network. These include single-qubit excitation, two-qubit entangled states, and two excitations for which many-body effects are present. Our approach, combined with the quantum circuit’s versatility, paves the way to short-distance quantum communication for connecting distributed quantum processors or registers, even if hampered by inherent imperfections in actual quantum devices.

Constant-Overhead Fault-Tolerant Bell-Pair Distillation Using High-Rate Codes

We present a fault-tolerant Bell-pair distillation scheme achieving constant overhead through high-rate quantum low-density parity-check (qLDPC) codes. Our approach maintains a constant distillation rate equal to the code rate while requiring no additional overhead beyond the physical qubits of the code. Full circuit-level analysis demonstrates fault-tolerance for input Bell-pair infidelities below a threshold ∼10%, readily achievable with near-term capabilities. Unlike previous proposals, our scheme keeps the output Bell pairs encoded in qLDPC codes at each node, eliminating unencoding overhead and enabling direct use in distributed quantum applications through recent advances in qLDPC computation. These results establish qLDPC-based distillation as a practical route toward resource-efficient quantum networks and distributed quantum computing.

QUANT-NET Control Plane Framework (QNCP) v1.0.0

The QUANT-NET Control Plane (QNCP) provides a software framework for expressing and managing quantum network resources. It may be used to orchestrate a physical quantum testbed with real device driver implementations, or it may be used as a proving ground when developing new protocols and management functions. In practice, both approaches may be useful when undertaking research and development in emerging quantum testbeds. While a number of control systems have been developed for specific quantum platform demonstrations, an openly available and general solution for operating quantum networks has not emerged. QNCP is designed to fill this gap. The framework has been designed to provide extensible, modular capabilities that include scheduling, routing, monitoring, and pluggable protocols. A number of reference implementations in each module category have been included in the installable packages; however, the intent is that each of these modules may be extended or re-implemented to meet the needs of the particular deployment or research need. The software is currently being used in the QUANT-NET testbed project, which spans resources between LBNL and UC Berkeley Physics.

Generation of scalable genuine multipartite Gaussian entanglement with a parametric amplifier network

Genuine multipartite entanglement is a valuable resource in quantum information science, as it exhibits inseparability across all possible bipartitions of a multimode quantum state. The large degree of quantum correlations can be exploited in various quantum information protocols, such as teleportation, dense coding, and quantum interferometry. Here, in this study, we propose a scheme to generate scalable genuine multipartite continuous-variable entangled states of light using a parametric amplifier network. We verify the presence of genuine quadripartite, hexapartite, and octapartite entanglement through a violation of the positive partial transpose criteria. Additionally, we use 𝛼-entanglement of formation to demonstrate the scalability of our approach to an arbitrary number of 2⁢𝑁 genuinely entangled parties by taking advantage of the symmetries present in our scheme.

Entanglement Traffic Engineering in Quantum Optical Fiber Networks based on High-Dimensional Kerr Optical Frequency Combs

The purpose of the project was to explore the performance of entanglement protocols based on microresonator Kerr optical frequency combs. We have addressed these challenges by developing a rigorous frequency-bin approach that allowed us to determine an explicit steady-state density operator for quantum microcombs below threshold. Our novel approach has allowed us to derived an explicit formula for the density operator on the frequency-bin basis, and to propose a complete description of quantum Kerr combs regardless of the number of sidemodes or loss-induced coupling to the environment. This formalism also allows for the explicit determination of their fidelity, purity, and entropy. These results are expected to permit the exploitation of the full potential of entangled microcombs for quantum technology.

Universal Workflow Language and Software Enable Geometric Learning and FAIR Scientific Protocol Reporting

Written language and conventional data structures for representing scientific procedures suffer from low process detail, often fail to accurately represent protocols, and lack universality. New strategies for the handling of experimental data are needed to provide viable process information for both humans and machines. In this work, we present the universal workflow language (UWL) and interface (UWLi). UWL is a findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR)-compatible, graph-based data architecture that can capture arbitrary scientific procedures through workflow representation, and UWLi is an accompanying software package for building, manipulating, and interpreting UWL entries. The UWL format was found to be highly effective in identifying deficiencies in the reported process details of high-impact, peer-reviewed scientific journals, and in simulated scenarios, the graph format was shown to be more effective than conventional methods in predictively modeling the outcome of diverse scientific protocols. Implementation of UWL could enable more accurate scientific communication and more impactful process datasets.
