Rapid Polymer Sequencer

Solid-state nanopore-based analysis of nucleic acid polymers is revolutionary. No other technique can determine information content in single molecules of genetic material at the speed of 1 subunit per microsecond. Because individual molecules are counted, the output is intrinsically quantitative. The nanopore approach is more generalized than any other method and in principle may be used to analyze any polymer molecule, including proteins. The approach to the development of a solid-state nanopore device is novel in the use of nanofabrication, nanoelectronic components, and high-speed signal acquisition. A novel geometry of the solid-state nanopore (less than 5 nm in length and 5 nm in diameter) will enable 1 to 5 nucleotide resolution measurements. This means that maximum resolution will be improved at least 100-fold compared to biological ion-channel measurements. The solid-state nanopore sensor will be made to enable sequencing DNA at a much faster rate than presently possible without the need for extensive sample preparation procedures, such as enzymatic amplification and labeling reactions. It will analyze electronic properties of individual subunits of DNA or RNA, to obtain linear composition of each genetic polymer molecule.

Carbon Nanotube Switches for Communication and Memory Applications

Lateral CNT Switches: a) dc CNT switches were demonstrated to operate at low voltages, low powers and high speeds. b) RF simulations of switch in series configuration with metallized tube yielded good RF performance 1) Isolation simulated to be approx. 20 dB at 100 GHz. 2) Insertion loss simulated to be < 0.5 dB at 100 GHz. Vertical CNT Switches: a) Thermal CVD was used to mechanically constrain tubes in nanopockets; tubes not self-supporting. b) Demonstrated growth of vertically aligned arrays and single-few MWNTs using dc PECVD with Ni catalyst using optical lithography.

Carbon Nanotube Vacuum Gauges Utilizing Long, Dissipative Tubes

CNT Vacuum Gauges: a) have a broad range of pressure response from 760 - 10(exp -6) Torr. b) have current changes approx. 100's nA in high vacuum regime (10(exp -6) Torr) and sensitivity increases with power and substrate removal. c) have a negative dR/dT (TCR negative) where a thermal hopping energy E(sub a) was determined to be approx. 40 meV. d) have compatible fabrication requirements for their integration with micromachined structures. e) can be operated at low power (nW - micro-W). f) have an active device region footprint of < 10 sq microns. g) are non-intrusive due to small size and passive operation.
