Synthesis and Thermal Conductivity of Exfoliated Hexagonal Boron Nitride/Alumina Ceramic Composite

Exfoliated hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)/alumina composite can be fabricated by following the process of (1) heating a mixture of hBN, AlCl3, and NaF in nitrogen for intercalation; (2) heating the intercalated product in air for exfoliation and at the same time converting the intercalate (AlCl3) into Al2O3, (3) rinsing the oxidized product, (4) coating individual exfoliated hBN platelets that contain Al2O3 with new layers of aluminum oxide, and finally, (5) hot pressing the product into the composite. The composite thus obtained has a composition of approximately 60 percent by weight hBN and 40 percent by weight alumina. Its in-plane and through-plane thermal conductivity were measured to be 86 and 18 watts per meter Kelvin, respectively, at room temperature.

Boron Nitride Nanoribbons from Exfoliation of Boron Nitride Nanotubes

Two types of boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) were exfoliated into boron nitride nanoribbons (BNNR), which were identified using transmission electron microscopy: (1) commercial BNNTs with thin tube walls and small diameters. Tube unzipping was indicated by a large decrease of the sample's surface area and volume for pores less than 2 nm in diameter. (2) BNNTs with large diameters and thick walls synthesized at NASA Glenn Research Center. Here, tube unraveling was indicated by a large increase in external surface area and pore volume. For both, the exfoliation process was similar to the previous reported method to exfoliate commercial hexagonal boron nitride (hBN): Mixtures of BNNT, FeCl3, and NaF (or KF) were sequentially treated in 250 to 350 C nitrogen for intercalation, 500 to 750 C air for exfoliation, and finally HCl for purification. Property changes of the nanosized boron nitride throughout this process were also similar to the previously observed changes of commercial hBN during the exfoliation process: Both crystal structure (x-ray diffraction data) and chemical properties (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy data) of the original reactant changed after intercalation and exfoliation, but most (not all) of these changes revert back to those of the reactant once the final, purified products are obtained.

Methods for Intercalating and Exfoliating Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Methods that facilitate exfoliation of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), exfoliated hBN, and associated intermediate products are disclosed. Such a method can include the acts of mixing a sample of hBN with an activation agent (e.g., NaF, etc.) and a selected set of chemicals (e.g., a metal chloride) and intercalating the set of chemicals into the hBN to obtain intercalated hBN. Additionally, such a method can include the acts of hydrating the set of chemicals (i.e., the intercalates), and converting the set of chemicals to a set of oxide nanoparticles when exfoliating the intercalated hBN. The exfoliated hBN can be washed (e.g., with HCl, etc.) to remove remaining nanoparticles.

Electrostatic Levitation of ZBLAN and Chalcogenide Glasses

Heavy Metal Fluoride Glasses have been studied for approximately 35 years. ZrF4-BaF BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF (ZBLAN) showed the most promise as an optical fiber. It transmits IR out to approximately 5 microns. Applications: fiber amplifiers, lasers and nuclear radiation resistant links. Intrinsic and Extrinsic processes limit light propagation; Intrinsic: band gap absorption, Rayleigh scatter and multiphonon absorption; Extrinsic: impurities such as rare-earth ions and crystallite formation. Theoretical loss coefficient is 0.001 dB/km. This loss has not been achieved to date due to intrinsic and extrinsic processes. ZBLAN fibers obtained from Infrared Focal Systems, Inc. and Bell Laboratories. Fibers were stripped of coating and placed in evacuated quartz ampoules. These fibers were first flown on NASA’s KC135 Reduced Gravity Aircraft. KC135 produces approximately 25 sec. of reduced gravity per parabola. One week of flights led to approximately 200 total parabolas. Fibers were heated to the crystallization temperature during reduced gravity and compared to unit gravity for the same amount of time. Fibers were also flown on board the Conquest sub-orbital rocket. This flight gave approximately 6.5 minutes of reduced gravity.

A Synthesis Plugin for Auralization of Rotor Self Noise

This paper describes the development and architecture of a software plugin for the NASA Auralization Framework that synthesizes rotor modulating broadband self noise. A conceptual overview of the synthesis process is reviewed. The architecture description includes use of the plugin within a broader framework to auralize rotorcraft flyovers. Use of the plugin is demonstrated for a six-passenger quadrotor urban air mobility reference vehicle design using collective-pitch control.

Prediction-Based Auralization of a Multirotor Urban Air Mobility Vehicle

Recent advances in auralization methods applicable to rotary wing vehicles have made it possible to undertake a prediction-based auralization of a representative multirotor urban air mobility vehicle. These advances include a new capability for synthesizing loading and thickness noise directly from the prediction method and a new capability for predicting and synthesizing modulating broadband self noise within a unified system noise prediction-auralization framework. These capabilities are demonstrated for a six passenger quadrotor reference vehicle design using collective-pitch control. Propagation of the source noise to a ground observer completes the auralization process. The demonstrated capability serves as the basis for future work directed at perception-influenced design of low noise urban air mobility vehicles.
