The Sm-Nd history of KREEP

Sm-Nd whole rock measurements on a variety of KREEP-rich samples from different landing sites are reported. Despite a variation of Nd and Sm concentrations of almost a factor of 3, the Sm-Nd ratios, as well as the Nd-143/Nd-144 values, show an extremely close grouping. No systematic differences between samples from different landing sites are resolved. These results are taken to be indicative of a moon-wide process having been responsible for the generation of the KREEP source reservoir, 4.36 plus or minus 0.06 AE ago, as estimated from model age calculation.

Origin and history of the adcumulate eucrite, Moama as inferred from REE abundances, Sm-Nd and U-Pb systematics

The abundances of Sm-Nd and U-Pb isotopes and of rare earth elements (REE) in Moama cumulate eucrite were investigated. The Sm-Nd data plotted on a Nd-143/Nd-144 vs Sm-147/Nd-144 evolution diagram define a line with a slope corresponding to an age of 4.58 plus or minus 0.05 billion years and an initial Nd-143/Nd-144 ratio of about 0.50684. Moama was found to contain the lowest overall trivalent REE abundances, the most light REE-depleted abundance pattern, and largest positive Eu anomaly of any eucrite yet studied. The REE data indicate that Moama could have been derived by about 1 to 5% fractional crystallization from a liquid with REE contents similar to Juvinas, or about 20 to 30% fractional crystallization from a Sioux County-like liquid. The data are consistent with the hypothesis that the Moama, Serra de Mage, and Moore county cumulate meteorites could have been derived from the same parent liquid. Results of the U-Th-Pb study indicate that the majority of the Pb in Moama is of terrestrial origin, and suggest that the meteorite has undergone a minor thermal event causing re-equilibration of the U-Pb system.

Origin and evolution of the Nakhla meteorite inferred from the Sm-Nd and U-Pb systematics and REE, Ba, Sr, Rb and K abundances

Analyses of whole rock and mineral separates from the Nakhla meteorite are carried out by means of Sm-Nd and U-Tn-Pb systematics and by determining their REE, Ba, Sr, Rb, and K concentrations. Results show that the Sm-Nd age of the meteorite is 1.26 + or - 0.7 b.y., while the high initial epsilon(Nd) value of +16 suggests that Nakhla was derived from a light REE-depleted, old planetary mantle source. A three-stage Sm-Nd evolution model is developed and used in combination with LIL element data and estimated partition coefficients in order to test partial melting and fractional crystallization models and to estimate LIL abundances in a possible Nakhla source. The calculations indicate that partial melting of the source followed by extensive fractional crystallization of the partial melt could account for the REE abundances in the Nakhla constituent minerals. It is concluded that the significantly younger age of Nakhla than the youngest lunar rock, the young differentiation age inferred from U-Th-Pb data, and the estimated LIL abundances suggest that this meteorite may have been derived from a relatively large, well-differentiated planetary body such as Mars.

Efficient, frequency-stable laser-diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser

One of the main goals of the study was to demonstrate a low-power efficient Nd:YAG laser oscillator for applications in remote coherent Doppler anemometry. An electrical-to-optical slope efficiency of 6.5 percent has been achieved by using commercially available CW laser diodes of up to 100 mW to pump monolithic Nd:YAG rod lasers. The observed Nd:YAG oscillation threshold is at 2.3 mW of laser-diode output power, i.e., a small fraction of the rated output power. The highest Nd:YAG CW output power reached is 4.4 mW at an overall electrical-to-optical efficiency of 1.5 percent. The frequency jitter is less than 10 kHz in 0.3 s.

The age and emplacement of obducted oceanic crust in the Urals from Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr systematics

The Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr isotopic characteristics of two mafic-ultramafic bodies, the Kemperai Massif in the South Ural Mountains and the Voykar-syninsky Massif in the Polar Ural mountains are examined. The data are found to be consistent with the hypothesis that these bodies represent fragments of old oceanic crust. Whole rock samples of pillow basalt, troctolite, gabbros, diabase, and a metasediment give Sm-Nd values which lie on this isochron indicating that the rock units are genetically related and formed 397 My ago. Basic and ultrabasic rocks from Kempersai and Voykar-Syninsky have an initial isotopic composition at time T, epsilon Nd(397 My), of +8.4, indicating derivation for an ancient depleted mantle source. The Sr isotopic data and the correlation with epsilon Nd indicate extensive alteration by seawater which is particularly strong on ultrabasic rocks. The results show that the segments of oceanic crust formed at least 80 My before the collision that produced the Urals.

Nd and Sr isotopic compositions of tektite material from Barbados and their relationship to North American tektites

The isotopic composition of microtektites from Barbados was determined to establish their possible source and their relationship to known tektite strewn fields. Analyzed samples included microtektites and tektite fragments from the Barbados oceanic beds, samples of deep sea ooze, in which they occur, and of underlying volcanic ash, as well as glass beads from Lake Wanapitei Crater. Isotope ratios (Sr-87/Sr-86, Nd-143/Nd-144, Rb-87/Sr-86, and Sm-147/Nd-144) were determined, and the epsilon values for Sr and Nd plotted on the diagram available for the fields of North America, Australia, Ivory Coast, and Moldavite tektites. The epsilon coordinates of all Barbados microtektite and bulk tektite samples plot precisely within the narrow field determined by North American tektites (epsilon Sr, 111; epsilon Nd, -6.2), yield an Nd model age of 0.6 AE, and are distinct from all other fields. The isotopic signatures of samples from sea ooze, ash layer, and of the Lake Wanapitei glass beads are clearly different from all known tektite classes. It is concluded that the Barbados tektites are of the same source and temporal event as the North American tektites.

Sm-Nd isotopic systematics and REE abundance studies of the ALH-765 eucrite

Analyses of Sm-Nd systematics and REE concentrations were carried out for the whole rock and mineral separates from the ALH-765 meteorite. A Sm-Nd age of 4.52 + or - 0.09 (2 sigma) b.y. and an initial Nd-143/Nd-144 ratio of 0.50675 + or 0.00011 (2 sigma) have been obtained. The previously reported Ce irregularities have been re-examined in this work. The large Ce anomalies and some minor Sm-Nd system disturbances observed for the meteorite may be interpreted as results of terrestrial weathering effects.

Mantle heterogeneity and crustal recycling in Archean granite-greenstone belts - Evidence from Nd isotopes and trace elements in the Rainy Lake area, Superior Province, Ontario, Canada

Crustal evolution in the Rainy Lake area, Ontario is studied in terms of geochemical characteristics. The Nd isotope data are examined for heterogeneity of the Archean mantle, and the Sm/Nd depletion of the mantle is analyzed. The Nd isotope systematics of individual rock suites is investigated in order to understand the difference between crust and mantle sources; the precursors and petrogenetic processes are discussed. The correlation between SiO2 content and Nd values is considered. Rapid recycling of crustal components, which were previously derived from depleted mantle sources, is suggested based on the similarity of the initial Nd isotopic composition for both mantle-derived and crustally-derived rocks.

Nd and Sr isotope systematics of river water suspended material - Implications for crustal evolution

Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr isotopic data on suspended material from rivers draining a variety of rock types and ages are presented. The bulk load of rivers and their source rocks are compared in terms of their isotopic characteristics and model ages. The Nd and Sr isotope systematics of the upper crust exposed to weathering are obtained along with the Nd model age distribution of the North American continental surface. The average Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr isotopic parameters for the upper continental crust today are refined.

Nd isotopic variations in Precambrian banded iron formations

The isotopic composition of Nd is reported for eight banded iron formations (BIFs) ranging in age from 0.65 to 3.4 Ga. The data suggest a trend of increasingly positive epsilon(Nd) values with age which is interpreted to reflect isotopic variations in Precambrian seawater. The Urucum (0.65 Ga) and the Gunflint (1.9 Ga) BIFs yield negative epsilon(Nd) values between -6 and 0. The remaining BIFs, with ages of 1.84 to 3.4 Ga, have predominantly positive values between -1 and +4. The Nd isotopic signature of BIFs changes from a principally continental source to a dominantly depleted mantle source from the present into the Archean.

Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr isotopic systematics of ureilites

The present evaluation of Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr isotopic data for seven ureilites establishes their divisions into three groups on the bases of Sm-Nd isotopic systematics. The first group of ureilites is made up of whole-rock samples whose highly depleted assemblages indicate Sm-Nd model ages consistent with 4.55 Ga. The second group of whole-rock samples of Kenna, Novo Urei, and ALHA77257 are heterogeneous mixtures of an unidentified light REE-enriched component and a light REE-depleted olivine-pyroxene assemblage. In the third group, LEW85440 neither has a model Sm-Nd age of 4.55 Ga nor plots of the 3.74 Ga isochron of the Kenna group; it might have had an evolution similar to the Kenna group, but involving different times and/or isotopic compositions.

Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd chronology of an Apollo 17 KREEP basalt

The paper determines Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr mineral isochrons for an Apollo 17 KREEP (pigeonite) basalt clast from breccia 72275 collected from Boulder 1, Station 2 in the Valley of Taurus-Littrow. Sm-Nd analyses of the basalt yield a precise mineral isochron age of 4.08 +/-0.07 Ga for lambda(Sm-147) = 0.00654/Ga. The concordancy of Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr ages for the basalt suggests that it crystallized about 4.08 Ga ago. Distinct ages and initial Sr isotopic ratios for Apollo 17 KREEP basalts and Apollo 14 and 15 KREEP suggest that these two types of KREEP basalts were not derived from the same source. Apollo 17 KREEP basalts are contemporaneous with some Apollo 14 aluminous mare basalts. The ages and Sr and Nd isotopic data suggest that these two different types of basalts were produced from sources having similar Rb/Sr ratios but different Sm/Nd ratios.

Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd isotopic variations in dissected crustal xenoliths

The effect of magma-xenolith interaction on the Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd isotopic systematics was investigated by studying the Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd variations in dissected crustal xenoliths sampled from different localities across Scotland. The Nd isotopic compositions were found to be virtually uniform across each xenolith, but significant variations were found in Rb, Sr, and REE concentrations, as well as in Rb/Sr and Sm/Nd ratios and Sr isotopic composition. Most of these variations appear to be inherited from the protolith, but, in one case, they have been modified by melt infiltration from the host magma. The results lend confidence to the interpretation of the isotopic and chemical compositions of xenoliths transported in basaltic magmas as reflecting their source regions, but they also highlight the potential problems of interpreting Sm-Nd model ages from metamorphic rocks.

Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd Isotopic Studies of Lunar Highland Meteorite Y86032 and Lunar Ferroan Anorthosites 60025 and 67075

Lunar meteorite Yamato (Y) 86032 is a feldspathic breccia containing anorthositic fragments similar to ferroan anorthosite (FAN) clasts commonly found in Apollo 16 highland rocks. Previous Ar-39-Ar-40 analyses of a grey anorthositic clast (,116 GC) in Y86032 revealed an old degassing age of 4.39 plus or minus 0.06 Ga, which is as old as crystallization ages of some FANs e.g. 60025, 67016 and 67215, as determined by the more robust Sm-Nd radiometric method. The calculated initial Nd value for the clast is -1.8 plus or minus 0.3 for the age. The old age and its negative initial Nd value indicate that Y86032 contains components of the primitive lunar crust related to the lunar magma ocean (LMO). We undertook further Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd isotopic investigation of three major lithologies in the meteorite as described in the mineralogical and petrological studies. Ar-39-Ar-40 analyses of these component lithologies are presented in this volume. Also, we analyzed two Apollo 16 FANs, 60025 and 67075, to compare their ages and isotopic signatures to Y86032. Y86032 probably came from a feldspathic highland terrane (FHT) on the northern farside highlands, a locality not sampled by the Apollo and Luna missions.

Constraints on the Formation of the Moon from High-Precision ND-Isotopic Measurements of Lunar Basalts

The most widely accepted theory for the formation of the Earth-Moon system proposes a giant impact model, where Earth collided in its later stages of accretion with a body of the approximate size of Mars [1, 2]. In this model, the Moon ultimately formed from hot debris generated during this giant impact. Short-lived radioisotopes such as Sm-146 (t(sub 1/2) = 103 Ma) may be useful in determining the chronology of the events that formed the Earth-Moon system and for how these terrestrial bodies evolved following accretion. New high-precision samarium-neodymium data showed that chondritic meteorites are on average 20 ppm lower in 142Nd/144Nd than terrestrial samples [3]. These data suggest that if the bulk silicate Earth (BSE) has a Sm/Nd ratio within the range measured for chondrites, the higher-than-chondritic Nd-142/Nd-144 ratio of terrestrial materials requires that the silicate Earth experienced a global chemical differentiation during the lifetime of Sm-146. If the Moon has super-chondritic Nd-142/Nd-144 identical to the Earth, as suggested by available data [4], then the giant impact must have occurred into an already differentiated Earth, predominantly sampling the Nd-depleted reservoir. In order to test this hypothesis, high-precision Nd-isotope ratios were obtained on a Thermo-Finnigan Triton TIMS for six lunar basalts that span the compositional range of lavas from the Moon: Samples 15555 and LAP 02205 represent low-Ti basalts; 70017 and 74275 are high-Ti basalts; 15386 and SAU 169 are KREEP basalts.

Sm-Nd and Initial Sr-87/Sr-86 Isotopic Systematics of Asuka 881394 and Cumulate Eucrites Yamato 980318/433 Compared

The Asuka 881394 achondrite contains fossil Al-26 and Mn-53 and has a Pb-206/Pb-207 age of 4566.5 +/- 0.2 Ma, the oldest for an achondrite. Recent re-investigation of A881394 yielded revised initial Sm-146/Sm-144 = (9.1 +/- 1.4) x 10(exp -3), a Sm-147-Nd-143 age of 4525 +/- 58 Ma, a Rb-87-Sr-87 age of 4490 +/- 130 Ma, and initial Sr-87/Sr-86 = 0.698991 +/- 19, respectively. The relatively large uncertainties in the Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr ages are due to disturbances of the isotopic systematics of tridymite and other minor phases. A preliminary value for the Sm-147-Nd-143 age of the Yamato 980318 cumulate eucrite of 4560 +/- 150 Ma was refined in later work to 4567 +/- 24 Ma as reported orally at LPSC 35. Similarly, a preliminary value for Sm-146/Sm-144 = (7.7 +/- 1.2) x 10 (exp -3) was refined to (6.0 +/- 0.3) x 10(exp -3). For Yamato 980433, a Sm-147-Nd-143 age of 4542 +/-42 Ma and Sm-146/Sm-144 = (5.7 +/- 0.5) x 10(exp -3) has been reported. Because these two cumulate eucrites are paired, we consider them to represent one igneous rock and present their combined isotopic data here.

Peering Through a Martian Veil: ALHA84001 Sm-Nd Age Revisited

The ancient Martian orthopyroxenite ALH84001experienced a complex history of impact and aqueous alteration events. Here we summarize Sm-147-Nd-143 and Sm-146-Nd-142 analyses performed at JSC. Further, using REE data, we model the REE abundance pattern of the basaltic magma parental to ALH84001 cumulus orthopyroxene. We find the Sm-146-Nd-142 isotopic data to be consistent with isotopic evolution in material having the modeled Sm/Nd ratio from a time very close to the planet's formation to igneous crystallization of ALH84001 as inferred from the Sm-Nd studies.

Self-Raman Nd:YVO4 Laser and Electro-Optic Technology for Space-Based Sodium Lidar Instrument

We are developing a laser and electro-optic technology to remotely measure Sodium (Na) by adapting existing lidar technology with space flight heritage. The developed instrumentation will serve as the core for the planning of an Heliophysics mission targeted to study the composition and dynamics of Earth's mesosphere based on a spaceborne lidar that will measure the mesospheric Na layer. We present performance results from our diode-pumped tunable Q-switched self-Raman c-cut Nd:YVO4 laser with intra-cavity frequency doubling that produces multi-watt 589 nm wavelength output. The c-cut Nd:YVO4 laser has a fundamental wavelength that is tunable from 1063-1067 nanometers. A CW (Continuous Wave) External Cavity diode laser is used as a injection seeder to provide single-frequency grating tunable output around 1066 nanometers. The injection-seeded self-Raman shifted Nd:VO4 laser is tuned across the sodium vapor D2 line at 589 nanometers. We will review technologies that provide strong leverage for the sodium lidar laser system with strong heritage from the Ice Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ATLAS). These include a space-qualified frequency-doubled 9 watts-at-532-nanometer wavelength Nd:YVO4 laser, a tandem interference filter temperature-stabilized fused-silica-etalon receiver and high-bandwidth photon-counting detectors.
