A Correlated Ab Initio Study of Linear Carbon-Chain Radicals C(sub n)H (n=2-7)

Linear carbon-chain radicals C(sub n) H for n = 2-7 have been studied with correlation consistent valence and core-valence basis sets and the coupled cluster method RCCSD(T). Equilibrium structures, rotational constants, and dipole moments are reported and compared with available experimental data. The ground state of the even-n series changes from 2Sigma(+) to 2Pi as the chain is extended. For C4H, the 2Sigma(+) state was found to lie only 72 cm(exp -1) below the 2Pi state in the estimated complete basis set limit for valence correlation. The C2H(-) and C3H(-) anions have also been characterized.

The Heats of Formation of SiCl+n, for n=1-4

The heats of formation of SiCl(sub n) and SiCl+(sub n), for n=1-4, have been determined using the G2(B3LYP/MP2/CC) approach. The results for the neutral systems are in very good agreement with previous work. High level calibration calculations show that ion results have about the same accuracy as the neutrals, and allow us to refine the G2(B3LYP/MP2/CC) values. The calculations show that the adiabatic IP of SiCl4 is about 7 kcal/mol smaller than the accepted value. Using a rigid rotor/harmonic oscillator approximation, the temperature dependence of the heat of formation, heat capacity, and entropy are computed for 300 to 4000 K and fit to a polynomial.

Preparation of 7-hydroxy-2-oxoindolin-3-ylacetic acid and its [13C2], [5-n-3H], and [5-n-3H]-7-O-glucosyl analogues for use in the study of indol-3-ylacetic acid catabolism

An improved synthesis of 7-hydroxy-2-oxoindolin-3-ylacetic acid via the base-induced condensation reaction between oxalate esters and 7-benzyloxyindolin-2-one is described. 7-Benzyloxyindolin-2-one was prepared in four steps and 50% overall yield from 3-hydroxy-2-nitrotoluene. The yield of the title compound from 7-benzyloxyindolin-2-one was 56%. This route was used to prepare 7-hydroxy-2-oxoindolin-3-yl[13C2]acetic acid in 30% yield from [13C2]oxalic acid dihydrate. The method could not be extended to the preparation of the corresponding [14C2]-compound. However, an enzyme preparation from Zea mays roots catalysed the conversion of carrier-free [5-n-3H]indol-3-ylacetic acid with a specific activity of 16.7 Ci mmol-1 to a mixture of 7-hydroxy-2-oxo[5-n-3H]indolin-3-ylacetic acid and its [5-n-3H]-7-O-glucoside in ca. 3 and 40% radiochemical yield respectively. The glucoside was converted into the 7-hydroxy compound in 80% yield by means of beta-glucosidase.

A variant of nested dissection for solving n by n grid problems

Nested dissection orderings are known to be very effective for solving the sparse positive definite linear systems which arise from n by n grid problems. In this paper nested dissection is shown to be the final step of incomplete nested dissection, an ordering which corresponds to the premature termination of dissection. Analyses of the arithmetic and storage requirements for incomplete nested dissection are given, and the ordering is shown to be competitive with nested dissection under certain conditions.

A methodology for experimentally based determination of gap shrinkage and effective lifetimes in the emitter and base of p-n junction solar cells and other p-n junction devices

An experimentally based methodology that determines the effective gap shrinkage and lifetime in the emitter of a p-n junction solar cell is described which provides an experimental means for assessing the importance of gap shrinkage relative to that of large recombination rates in the highly doped emitter. The base lifetime is also determined. The methodology pertains to a solar cell after the junction is formed, so that each material parameter determined includes the effects of the processing used in junction fabrication. The methodology consists of strategy and procedures for designing experiments and interpreting data consistently with the physical mechanisms governing device behavior. This careful linking to the device physics uncover the material parameters concealed in the data. To illustrate the procedures, they are applied to an n(+)-p solar cell having substrate resistivity of about 0.1 ohm-cm.

Incomplete nested dissection for solving n by n grid problems

Nested dissection orderings are known to be very effective for solving sparse positive definite linear systems which arise from n by n grid problems. In this paper we consider incomplete nested dissection, an ordering which corresponds to the premature termination of nested dissection. Analyses of the arithmetic and storage requirements for incomplete nested dissection are given and the ordering is shown to be competitive with nested dissection with regard to arithmetic operations and superior to that ordering in storage requirements.

Transport properties for the nitrogen system - N2, N, N(+) and E

The transport properties of the 'nitrogen system' (N2, N, N(+), and e) are important in a variety of applications, including atmospheric entry of the Shuttle and other re-entry vehicles. The kinetic theory of gases has been used to calculate the conductive transport properties for this system. The best available two-body interaction potentials have been used to calculate the transport collision integrals for each of the ten interactions which can occur in this system. Results are presented for the pure species and for the gas mixture from 600K-14000K.
