Stockmayer fluid simulations for viscosity and glass transition temperature of ionic liquids

We develop a Stockmayer fluid model for molecular dynamics simulations of ionic liquids that captures molecular polarization, ionic conductivity, viscosity, and glass transition temperature, using ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) as an example. The ions in EAN are treated as spheres interacting via the Lennard-Jones potential with an embedded point charge and a permanent dipole moment. We show that our simulation results for EAN are consistent with experimental data and then explore the effects of the molecular parameters on the viscosity of ionic liquids. Our results indicate that viscosity monotonically increases with ionic charge and dipole moment but non-monotonically changes with ionic diameter (or molar volume). This non-monotonic trend arises from the competition among the electrostatic interactions, molecular packing, and size asymmetry between the cation and anion. In conclusion, our model also shows that long-lived ion pairs result in higher viscosities.

Highly Efficient Ternary Solar Cells with Efficient Förster Resonance Energy Transfer for Simultaneously Enhanced Photovoltaic Parameters

Introducing a third component into organic bulk heterojunction solar cells has become an effective strategy to improve photovoltaic performance. Meanwhile, the rapid development of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) has pushed the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs) to a higher standard. In this study, a series of fullerene-free ternary solar cells are fabricated based on a wide bandgap acceptor, IDTT-M, together with a wide bandgap donor polymer PM6 and a narrow bandgap NFA Y6. Insights from the morphological and electronic characterizations reveal that IDTT-M has been incorporated into Y6 domains without disrupting its molecular packing and sacrificing its electron mobility and work synergistically with Y6 to regulate the packing pattern of PM6, leading to enhanced hole mobility and suppressed recombination. IDTT-M further functions as an energy-level mediator that increases open-circuit voltage ( V OC ) in ternary devices. In addition, efficient Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between IDTT-M and Y6 provides a non-radiative pathway for facilitating exciton dissociation and charge collection. As a result, the optimized ternary device features a significantly improved PCE up to 16.63% with simultaneously enhanced short-circuit current ( J SC ), V OC , and fill factor (FF).

Developing Efficient Benzene Additives for 19.43% Efficiency of Organic Solar Cells by Crossbreeding Effect of Fluorination and Bromination

Employing volatile solid additives have emerged as a promising method to optimize the morphology and improve the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). However, principles governing the efficient design of solid additives remain elusive. In this work, the programmed fluorination and/or bromination on benzene core to develop efficient additives for OSCs is reported. The programmed fluorination and/or bromination endow the five halogen benzene derivatives, 1,3,5-trifluorobenzene, hexafluorobenzene, 1,3,5-tribromo-2,4,6-trifluorobenzene (TFTB), 1,3,5-tribromobenzene, and hexabromobenzene, with different melting and boiling points, volatility, as well as interactions with the host blend. Studies indicate that the additives with extremely high and low volatility are almost powerless and even detrimental to the morphology evolution. Among them, the combination of fluorine and bromine atoms on TFTB not only enables the more appropriate m.p./b.p. and volatility, but also exerts stronger molecular interactions with the host blend, giving rise to higher ordered molecular packing and more favorable morphology. Importantly, TFTB exhibits good universality to optimize the performances of OSCs with high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs; over 18%) in a group of binary blend systems, and an impressive PCE of 19.43% in the ternary PBTz-F:PM6:L8-BO system.

Terpolymer Donor with Inside Alkyl Substituents on Thiophene π ‐Bridges toward Thiazolothiazole A 2 ‐Unit Enables 18.21% Efficiency of Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract PM6 is a widely used D–A copolymer donor in the polymer solar cells (PSCs). Incorporating second electron‐withdrawing (A 2 ) units into PM6 backbone by ternary D–A 1 –D–A 2 random copolymerization strategy is an effective approach to further improve its photovoltaic performance. Here, the authors synthesize the PM6‐based terpolymers by introducing thiazolothiazole as the A 2 units connecting with thiophene π‐bridges attaching alkyl substituent towards the A 2 unit (PMT‐CT) or towards D‐unit (PMT‐FT), and study the effect of the alkyl substituent position on the photovoltaic performance of them. Two terpolymers PMT‐FT‐10 and PMT‐CT‐10 are obtained by incorporating 10% A 2 units in the terpolymers. The film of PMT‐CT‐10 shows slightly up‐shifted highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels while better co‐planar structure than that of PMT‐FT‐10. Meanwhile, the PMT‐CT‐10:Y6 blend film exhibits better molecular packing properties, more proper phase separation and more balanced hole and electron mobilities, which are beneficial to more efficient exciton dissociation, efficient charge transport and weaker bimolecular recombination. Consequently, the PMT‐CT‐10 based PSCs obtain the highest power conversion efficiency of 18.21%. The results indicate that side chain position on the thiophene π‐bridges influence the device performance of the terpolymer donors, and PMT‐CT‐10 is a high efficiency polymer donor for the PSCs.

Crossbreeding Effect of Chalcogenation and Iodination on Benzene Additives Enables Optimized Morphology and 19.68% Efficiency of Organic Solar Cells

Volatile solid additives have attracted increasing attention in optimizing the morphology and improving the performance of currently dominated non-fullerene acceptor-based organic solar cells (OSCs). However, the underlying principles governing the rational design of volatile solid additives remain elusive. Herein, a series of efficient volatile solid additives are successfully developed by the crossbreeding effect of chalcogenation and iodination for optimizing the morphology and improving the photovoltaic performances of OSCs. Five benzene derivatives of 1,4-dimethoxybenzene (DOB), 1-iodo-4-methoxybenzene (OIB), 1-iodo-4-methylthiobenzene (SIB), 1,4-dimethylthiobenzene (DSB) and 1,4-diiodobenzene (DIB) are systematically studied, where the widely used DIB is used as the reference. The effect of chalcogenation and iodination on the overall property is comprehensively investigated, which indicates that the versatile functional groups provided various types of noncovalent interactions with the host materials for modulating the morphology. Among them, SIB with the combination of sulphuration and iodination enabled more appropriate interactions with the host blend, giving rise to a highly ordered molecular packing and more favorable morphology. As a result, the binary OSCs based on PM6:L8-BO and PBTz-F:L8-BO as well as the ternary OSCs based on PBTz-F:PM6:L8-BO achieved impressive high PCEs of 18.87%, 18.81% and 19.68%, respectively, which are among the highest values for OSCs.

Regulation of Side‐Chain Symmetry for Delaying Triplet Formation and Suppressing Non‐Radiative Loss in Organic Solar Cells

Abstract The structural revolutions of non‐fullerene acceptors (NFAs) have driven continuous efficiency breakthroughs in organic solar cells (OSCs). Rational regulation of NFA structures toward efficient exciton dissociation and mitigated non‐radiative recombination is pivotal for OSCs. The incorporation of asymmetric side chains on NFAs can often achieve these goals by inducing a desirable aggregate state. However, it lacks the studies to directly correlate the side‐chain symmetry of NFAs with the exciton delocalization and triplet dynamics in OSCs. Herein, The influence of structural symmetry on the aggregate properties is systematically investigated and exciton/charge dynamics based on two developed biaxial‐conjugated NFAs with varied side‐chain symmetry. The symmetric NFA having diverse molecular packing orientations can form multiple charge transfer channels in its blend with polymer donor, which cannot be found in that comprising the asymmetric ones. Moreover, a slower rate and lower ratio of the spin‐triplet state are formed in the blend of symmetric NFA, resulting in a much lower non‐radiative voltage loss in corresponding OSCs. This study reveals the distinct advantages of symmetric NFAs in both aggregate properties and exciton/charge dynamics over those of asymmetric ones, paving the way for developing high‐performance OSCs using easier‐to‐prepare, low‐cost symmetric materials.

Two‐Dimensional Polycyclic Photovoltaic Molecule with Low Trap Density for High‐Performance Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract Typical organic semiconductors show a high trap density of states (10 16 –10 18 cm −3 ), providing a large number of centers for charge‐carrier recombination, thus hindering the development of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Here, we design and synthesize a two‐dimensional polycyclic photovoltaic material, named as TPP, to reduce the trap density to as low as 2.3×10 15 cm −3 , which is 1–3 orders of magnitude lower than those of typical organic semiconductors. Moreover, TPP exhibits a broad and strong absorption, ordered molecular packing with a large crystalline coherence length and enhanced electron mobility. Then, the bulk heterojunction nanoparticles (BHJ‐NPs) based on a blend of polymer donor (PM6) and TPP exhibit an average hydrogen evolution rate (HER) of 64.31 mmol h −1 g −1 under AM1.5G sunlight (100 mW cm −2 ), and 72.75 mmol h −1 g −1 under 330–1100 nm illumination (198 mW cm −2 ) higher than that of the control NPs based on typical PM6 : Y6 (62.67 mmol h −1 g −1 ).

Nonfullerene Acceptor Featuring Unique Self‐Regulation Effect for Organic Solar Cells with 19 % Efficiency

Abstract The blend nanomorphology of electron‐donor (D) and ‐acceptor (A) materials is of vital importance to achieving highly efficient organic solar cells. Exogenous additives especially aromatic additives are always needed to further optimize the nanomorphology of blend films, which is hardly compatible with industrial manufacture. Herein, we proposed a unique approach to meticulously modulate the aggregation behavior of NFAs in both crystal and thin film nanomorphology via self‐regulation effect. Nonfullerene acceptor Z9 was designed and synthesized by tethering phenyl groups on the inner side chains of the Y6 backbone. Compared with Y6, the tethered phenyl groups participated in the molecular aggregation via the π–π stacking of phenyl‐phenyl and phenyl‐2‐(5,6‐difluoro‐3‐oxo‐2,3‐dihydro‐1H‐inden‐1‐ylidene)malononitrile (IC‐2F) groups, which induced 3D charge transport with phenyl‐mediated super‐exchange electron coupling. Moreover, ordered molecular packing with suitable phase separation was observed in Z9‐based blend films. High power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 19.0 % (certified PCE of 18.6 %) for Z9‐based devices were achieved without additives, indicating the great potential of the self‐regulation strategy in NFA design.

Electron‐Deficient and Quinoid Central Unit Engineering for Unfused Ring‐Based A 1 –D–A 2 –D–A 1 ‐Type Acceptor Enables High Performance Nonfullerene Polymer Solar Cells with High V oc and PCE Simultaneously

Abstract Here, a pair of A 1 –D–A 2 –D–A 1 unfused ring core‐based nonfullerene small molecule acceptors (NF‐SMAs), BO2FIDT‐4Cl and BT2FIDT‐4Cl is synthesized, which possess the same terminals (A 1 ) and indacenodithiophene unit (D), coupling with different fluorinated electron‐deficient central unit (difluorobenzoxadiazole or difluorobenzothiadiazole) (A 2 ). BT2FIDT‐4Cl exhibits a slightly smaller optical bandgap of 1.56 eV, upshifted highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels, much higher electron mobility, and slightly enhanced molecular packing order in neat thin films than that of BO2FIDT‐4Cl . The polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on BT2FIDT‐4Cl:PM7 yield the best power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 12.5% with a V oc of 0.97 V, which is higher than that of BO2FIDT‐4Cl ‐based devices (PCE of 10.4%). The results demonstrate that the subtle modification of A 2 unit would result in lower trap‐assisted recombination, more favorable morphology features, and more balanced electron and hole mobility in the PM7:BT2FIDT‐4Cl blend films. It is worth mentioning that the PCE of 12.5% is the highest value in nonfused ring NF‐SMA‐based binary PSCs with high V oc over 0.90 V. These results suggest that appropriate modulation of the quinoid electron‐deficient central unit is an effective approach to construct highly efficient unfused ring NF‐SMAs to boost PCE and V oc simultaneously.

A Difluoro‐Methoxylated Ending‐Group Asymmetric Small Molecule Acceptor Lead Efficient Binary Organic Photovoltaic Blend

Abstract Developing a new end group for synthesizing asymmetric small molecule acceptors (SMAs) is crucial for achieving high‐performance organic photovoltaics (OPVs). Herein, an asymmetric small molecule acceptor, BTP‐BO‐4FO, featuring a new difluoro‐methoxylated end‐group is reported. Compared to its symmetric counterpart L8‐BO, BTP‐BO‐4FO exhibits an upshifted energy level, larger dipole moment, and more sequential crystallinity. By adopting two representative and widely available solvent additives (1‐chloronaphthalene (CN) and 1,8‐diiodooctane (DIO)), the device based on PM6:BTP‐BO‐4FO (CN) photovoltaic blend demonstrates a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.62% with an excellent open‐circuit voltage (V OC ) of 0.933 V, which surpasses the optimal result of L8‐BO. The PCE of 18.62% realizes the best efficiencies for binary OPVs based on SMAs with asymmetric end groups. A series of investigations reveal that optimized PM6:BTP‐BO‐4FO film demonstrates similar molecular packing motif and fibrillar phase distribution as PM6:L8‐BO (DIO) does, resulting in comparable recombination dynamics, thus, similar fill factor. Besides, it is found PM6:BTP‐BO‐4FO possesses more efficient charge generation, which yields betterV OC –J SC balance. This study provides a new ending group that enables a cutting‐edge efficiency in asymmetric SMA‐based OPVs, enriching the material library and shed light on further design ideas.

A simple-structured benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b’]dithiophene-based molecule as a third component enables organic solar cells with over 18.2% efficiency

In this study, research has shown that ternary strategy is an effective tool for improving the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs) and simple-structured small molecules with low-cost and wide bandgap which broadens the scope of the choice in third components recently attracted the attention of researchers. Herein, a small molecule with benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b’]dithiophene (BDT) core named BR-C12 which mixed well with PM6 has been designed and synthesized. Incorporating BR-C12 as third component into PM6:Y6, BR-C12 exhibits a complementary absorption with PM6 and Y6, promoted exciton dissociation and charge collection, reduced bimolecular recombination, resulting in more ordered molecular packing. The PM6:Y6:BR-C12 (1:1.2:0.1, weight ratio) OSC shows an improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.02% in comparison to host binary devises (16.42%). In addition, by employing BR-C12 as third component into PM6:L8-BO, the ternary device based on PM6:L8-BO:BR-C12 also achieves significant enhancement in device photovoltaic performance with a PCE of 18.26%. In addition, BR-C12-added ternary devices exhibit improved stability than binary ones. This work presents a method for constructing high-performance ternary OSCs and enriches the abundance of materials for the third components.

Solid additive engineering enables high-efficiency and eco-friendly all-polymer solar cells

Currently, morphology optimization of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) strongly depends on the use of solvent additives, which are usually highly toxic and harmful to the environment and human health. Here, we report a green and volatile solid additive, 2-methoxynaphthalene (2-MN). It was found that the incorporation of 2-MN into a PM6:PY-DT blend can effectively manipulate the aggregations of PM6 and PY-DT during film depositing and thermal annealing processes and results in highly ordered molecular packing and favorable phase-separated morphology. Consequently, a record-high efficiency of 17.32% is achieved for the PM6:PY-DT device. Moreover, 2-MN-processed all-PSCs were fabricated by using non-halogenated solvent. High efficiencies of 17.03% and 16.67% are obtained for all-PSCs fabricated under nitrogen atmosphere and ambient conditions, respectively. Finally, our work shows that the utilization of 2-MN as a green and solid additive is a simple and feasible strategy to optimize the morphology and sheds new light on eco-friendly fabrication and application of all-PSCs.

Thermodynamic and Kinetic Transitions of Liquids in Nanoconfinement

Core principles of chemistry are ubiquitously invoked to shed light on the nature of molecular level interactions in nanoconfined fluids, which play a pivotal role in a wide range of processes in geochemistry, biology, and engineering. A detailed understanding of the physicochemical processes involved in the flow, structural transitions, and freezing or melting behavior of fluids confined within nanometer-sized pores of solid materials is thus of enormous importance for both basic research and technological applications. This Account provides a perspective on new insights into the thermodynamic and kinetic transitions of nanoconfined fluids in their stable and metastable forms. After briefly introducing the unique properties of mesoporous silicas from the SBA, MCM, and FDU families that serve as the confinement matrices, combining highly ordered single and bimodal mesopore architectures with tunable pore sizes in the ~2-15 nm range and narrow size distributions, recent studies on melting/freezing behavior of water confined in these host matrices are reviewed. While differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) reveals a linear relationship between melting point depression and pore size (independent of the pore shape), as predicted by the Gibbs-Thomson relation, variable temperature 2 H wide-line nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy studies confirm the core-shell model of water and give evidence for a layer-by-layer freezing mechanism, which gives rise to an apparent fragile-to-strong transition in the solidification dynamics. In contrast to the freezing/melting behavior of water, the effect of nanoconfinement on the glass transition of supercooled liquids is nonuniversal and the glass transition temperature T g can either increase or decrease with the dimensionality and extent of confinement. This nonuniversal behavior is exemplified by the two glass-forming molecular liquids, glycerol and ortho-terphenyl (OTP). While glycerol shows an increase in T g and a pronounced slowdown of the rotational dynamics of the constituent molecules due to a change in the molecular packing between the bulk and the confined liquid, OTP displays a linear and confining-media-dependent depression of T g with increased confinement that is strongly influenced by the pore-liquid interface characteristics. This Account concludes with a focus on recent experimental evidence of extreme spatial and dynamical heterogeneity in both freezing and glass transition processes. This discovery was enabled by the unique mesoporous structures of SBA-16 and FDU-5, possessing bimodal architectures with two interconnected pore types of different size and shape (spherical and cylindrical). For the very first time, two melting points for water and two glass transitions for supercooled OTP, corresponding to a specific pore type, were observed. Collectively, these observations strongly suggest a close mechanistic connection between the local fluctuations in the structure and dynamics of nanoconfined liquids. Finally, while the findings reviewed in this Account provide new insights into thermodynamic and kinetic transitions of fluids, there remain many unanswered questions regarding the effects of nanoconfinement on the fundamental properties of fluids, which offer exciting future opportunities in chemical research.

Structural and Spectroscopic Analysis of Ln(II) 18-crown-6 and Benzo-18-crown-6 Complexes (Ln = Sm, Eu, Yb)

Three Ln 2+ 18-crown-6 complexes of the formula Ln(18-crown-6)I 2 (Ln = Sm, Eu, Yb) were isolated from the explicit synthesis of the corresponding LnI 2 salts with 18-crown-6 and tetrabutylammonium tetraphenylborate in organic media under air-free conditions. Each metal complex forms a distorted hexagonal bipyramidal geometry and crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2 1 /n. Comparatively, crystallization of Ln(benzo-18-crown-6)I 2 (Ln = Sm, Eu, Yb) from the reaction of LnI2 with tetrabutylammonium tetraphenylborate and benzo-18-crown-6 in THF/ethanol under similarly air-free conditions yields two polymorphs. The first form, α, crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2 1 /c (or the nonstandard setting P2 1 /n for α-Yb); whereas the second polymorph, β, crystallizes in P$\bar{1}$. While the geometries of the molecules only vary slightly, the molecular packing and intramolecular contacts are quite different. In the structure of β, π–π interactions between the benzo- moieties of adjacent molecules are observed, whereas these interactions are absent in α. Despite the similarities in these classically 4f n+1 lanthanide systems, the complexes display distinct spectroscopic features in their respective absorption and photoluminescence spectra. Broadband 5d → 4f photoluminescence was observed for the Sm and Eu compounds in the NIR region and UV–visible region, respectively. None of the three Yb compounds exhibit photoluminescence UV–visible-NIR region; however, a unique photooxidation event was observed resulting in characteristic Yb(III) 4f → 4f transitions in the NIR region of the absorption spectra of these compounds. Finally, these findings are discussed along with structural comparisons of the 18-crown-6 and benzo-18-crown-6 compounds as well as other reported Ln(II) crown complexes in the literature.

Martini 3 Coarse-Grained Force Field for Cholesterol

Cholesterol plays a crucial role in biomembranes by regulating various properties, such as fluidity, rigidity, permeability, and organization of lipid bilayers. The latest version of the Martini model, Martini 3, offers significant improvements in interaction balance, molecular packing, and inclusion of new bead types and sizes. However, the release of the new model resulted in the need to reparameterize many core molecules, including cholesterol. Here, we describe the development and validation of a Martini 3 cholesterol model, addressing issues related to its bonded setup, shape, volume, and hydrophobicity. In conclusion, the proposed model mitigates some limitations of its Martini 2 predecessor while maintaining or improving the overall behavior.

Unravelling the mechanism of pressure induced polyamorphic transition in an inorganic molecular glass

The atomic structure of a germanium doped phosphorous selenide glass of composition Ge 2.8 P 57.7 Se 39.5 is determined as a function of pressure from ambient to 24 GPa using Monte-Carlo simulations constrained by high energy x-ray scattering data. The ambient pressure structure consists primarily of P 4 Se 3 molecules and planar edge shared phosphorus rings, reminiscent of those found in red phosphorous as well as a small fraction of locally clustered corner-sharing GeSe 4 tetrahedra. This low-density amorphous phase transforms into a high-density amorphous phase at ~6.3 GPa. The high-pressure phase is characterized by an extended network structure. The polyamorphic transformation between these two phases involves opening of the P 3 ring at the base of the P 4 Se 3 molecules and subsequent reaction with red phosphorus type moieties to produce a cross linked structure. The compression mechanism of the low-density phase involves increased molecular packing, whereas that of the high pressure phase involves an increase in the nearest-neighbor coordination number while the bond angle distributions broaden and shift to smaller angles. The entropy and volume changes associated with this polyamorphic transformation are positive and negative, respectively, and consequently the corresponding Clapeyron slope for this transition would be negative. This result has far reaching implications in our current understanding of the thermodynamics of polyamorphic transitions in glasses and glass-forming liquids.

Enhancing exciton diffusion by reducing energy disorder in organic solar cells

A highly crystalline, highly emissive, and wide-bandgap polymer AC174 with an extremely small Stokes shift is designed and synthesized in water, and is used to reduce system energetic disorder and increase the exciton diffusion length of the classical PM6:Y6 blend system. AC174 is incompatible with PM6 and Y6, improves molecular packing, and reduces system energetic disorder. The long-range Förster resonance energy transfer between the donor and acceptor is enhanced, and the exciton diffusion constant and exciton lifetime are increased, leading to a longer exciton diffusion length and more efficient exciton dissociation and charge generation. The addition of AC174 simultaneously improves the open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current density (J SC ) and fill factor of PM6:Y6 devices; especially the highest internal quantum efficiency approaches 100%, and the highest J SC is 28.4 mA cm –2 . Ternary devices with 5% AC174 in the donors achieve a power conversion efficiency of 17.2%, higher than those of the parent binary devices based on PM6:Y6 (15.9%) and AC174:Y6 (3.24%).
