Programmable Thermostat Module Upgrade for the Multipurpose Logistics Module

The STS-121/ULF 1.1 mission was the maiden flight of the programmable thermostat module (PTM) system used to control the 28 V shell heaters on the multi-purpose logistics module (MPLM). These PTMs, in conjunction with a data recorder module (DRM), provide continuous closed loop temperature control and data recording of MPLM on-orbit heater operations. This Technical Memorandum discusses the hardware design, development, test, and verification (DDT&V) activities performed at the Marshall Space Flight Center as well as the operational implementation and mission performance.

Direct Observation of Modulated Radical Spin States in Metal–Organic Frameworks by Controlled Flexibility

Owing to their switchable spin states and dynamic electronic character, organic-based radical species have been invoked in phenomena unique to a variety of fields. When incorporated in solid state materials, generation of organic radicals proves challenging due to aggregation. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising candidates for immobilization and stabilization of organic radicals because of the tunable spatial arrangement of organic linkers and metal nodes, which sequesters the reactive species. Herein, a flexible, redox-active tetracarboxylic acid linker bearing two imidazole units was chosen to construct a new Zr 6 -MOF, NU-910, with scu topology. By exploiting the structural flexibility of NU-910, we successfully modulate the dynamics between an isolated organic radical species and an organic radical π-dimer species in the MOF system. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that through solvent exchange from N,N-diethylformamide to acetone, NU-910 undergoes a structural contraction with interlinker distances decreasing from 8.32 Å to 3.20 Å at 100 K. Organic radical species on the bridging linkers are generated via UV light irradiation. Direct observation of temperature-induced spin switches from an isolated radical species to a magnetically silent radical π-dimer in NU-910 after irradiation in the solid state was achieved via variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction and variable-temperature electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Ultraviolet–visible–near infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations further substantiated the formation of a radical cation π-dimer upon irradiation. As a result, this work demonstrates the potential of using flexible MOFs as a platform to modulate radical spin states in the solid phase.

Modulating Chemical Environments of Metal–Organic Framework-Supported Molybdenum(VI) Catalysts for Insights into the Structure–Activity Relationship in Cyclohexene Epoxidation

Solid supports are crucial in heterogeneous catalysis due to their profound effects on catalytic activity and selectivity. However, elucidating the specific effects arising from such supports remains challenging. We selected a series of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with 8-connected Zr 6 nodes as supports to deposit molybdenum(VI) onto to study the effects of pore environment and topology on the resulting Mo-supported catalysts. As characterized by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), we modulated the chemical environments of the deposited Mo species. For Mo-NU-1000, the Mo species monodentately bound to the Zr 6 nodes were anchored in the microporous c-pore, but for Mo-NU-1008 they were bound in the mesopore of Mo-NU-1008. Both monodentate and bidentate modes were found in the mesopore of Mo-NU-1200. Cyclohexene epoxidation with H 2 O 2 was probed to evaluate the support effect on catalytic activity and to unveil the resulting structure–activity relationships. SCXRD and XAS studies demonstrated the atomically precise structural differences of the Mo binding motifs over the course of cyclohexene epoxidation. No apparent structural change was observed for Mo-NU-1000, whereas the monodentate mode of Mo species in Mo-NU-1008 and the monodentate and bidentate Mo species in Mo-NU-1200 evolved to a new bidentate mode bound between two adjacent oxygen atoms from the Zr 6 node. This work demonstrates the great advantage of using MOF supports for constructing heterogeneous catalysts with modulated chemical environments of an active species and elucidating structure–activity relationships in the resulting reactions.

Ultraviolet Fluorescence Imaging for Photovoltaic Module Metrology: Best Practices and Survey of Features Observed in Fielded Modules

As the photovoltaics (PV) industry grows in sophistication, so must the extent to which systems are characterized. UV Fluorescence (UVF) imaging is a valuable, easy-to-perform, high-throughput, nonintrusive technique for characterizing modules in the field and in the lab. However, UVF is still a relatively new technique, and many in the PV industry are still unaware of its potential. We provide a guideline for obtaining, processing, and interpreting UVF images. We have provided a list of considerations for imaging hardware and settings, a suggested pipeline for image processing, and details on a survey of features shown in UVF images. As a result, a new database with UVF images of 7190 modules and another database curated by BrightSpot Automation are publicly available.

Tonoplast Sucrose Transporter SUT4-Dependent Sugar Partitioning Modulates Phenological Transitions and Reproductive Success in Poplar

Climate uncertainty is intensifying the need for greater plasticity in carbohydrate reserve utilization to support winter survival and spring growth in woody perennials. In poplar, the single-copy SUT4, which encodes a tonoplast-localized sucrose transporter, and the SUT5/SUT6 genome duplicates, which encode plasma membrane-localized transporters, are expressed year-round, with SUT4 showing the highest expression during cool seasons. Given its role in vacuolar sucrose efflux and winter-predominant expression, SUT4 may play a key role in modulating seasonal carbohydrate dynamics. While SUT4-knockdown and knockout effects have been studied under greenhouse conditions, their impact under field conditions remains unexplored. Here, we report a field-based study comparing CRISPR knockout mutants of winter-expressed SUT4 and SUT5/SUT6 in Populus tremula x alba. We show that sut4, but not sut5/6, mutants exhibited earlier autumn leaf senescence, delayed spring bud flush, reduced stem growth, and altered sugar partitioning in winter xylem and bark relative to controls. After 2 years in the field, all genotypes flowered before leaf flush in early spring; however, sut4 mutants produced sterile ovules despite developing normal-looking catkins. Metabolic profiling revealed disrupted sucrose and raffinose dynamics in elongating sut4 catkins. This was accompanied by transcriptomic signatures of elevated stress and downregulation of proanthocyanidin biosynthesis and circadian clock genes. These findings highlight the critical role of SUT4 in coordinating sugar allocation, stress responses, and seasonal development in poplar.

Electric and Hydraulic Propel Torque Modulation for a Compact Track Loader With the Hybrid Hydraulic Electric Architecture (HHEA)

Abstract The Hybrid Hydraulic Electric Architecture (HHEA) has previously been proposed for off-highway vehicles to reap the efficiency and controllability benefits of electrification without needing very large electric motors. This is achieved with the use of a set of selectable common pressure rails to transmit the majority of power and small electric motors to modulate that power. Previous work has shown significant energy savings for the work circuits of a variety of machines. In this paper, the energy saving potential of HHEA for the propel circuit of a compact track loader is studied. The ports of the track hydraulic motors are selectably connected to the common pressure rails, and instead of using the electric assist motors to buck/boost pressure, as in HHEA for linear actuators, small electric assist motors are used to add/subtract torque directly. The interplay between the torque limits of the electric motors and the ability of the hydraulic motor to vary displacements is studied, along with the effect these factors have on energy saving potential. It is found that the ability to vary the displacement of the hydraulic motor allows for: more efficient electric motor operating conditions, reduced electric torque requirement, and reduced pressure rail switching events. All three of these advantages can be achieved at once using variable displacements; but trade-offs exist between these advantages (i.e. improved efficiency can be achieved at the expense of a larger electric torque requirement). Overall, the HHEA can reduce energy consumption by ∼ 36% compared to the stock machine, depending on the hydraulic motor’s ability to vary displacements, and assuming the electric motor torque is limited to 20% of that required in a direct electrification scheme.

Modulation linearization of a frequency-modulated voltage controlled oscillator, part 3

An analysis is presented for the voltage versus frequency characteristics of a varactor modulated VHF voltage controlled oscillator in which the frequency deviation is linearized by using the nonlinear characteristics of a field effect transistor as a signal amplifier. The equations developed are used to calculate the oscillator output frequency in terms of pertinent circuit parameters. It is shown that the nonlinearity exponent of the FET has a pronounced influence on frequency deviation linearity, whereas the junction exponent of the varactor controls total frequency deviation for a given input signal. A design example for a 250 MHz frequency modulated oscillator is presented.

Solar modulation of galactic cosmic rays 4: Latitude dependent modulation

A numerical method is outlined for solving the equation which describes the solar modulation of cosmic rays in models where interplanetary conditions can vary with heliocentric latitude. As an illustration of the use of this method, it is shown how variations in the modulation with latitude could produce the small radial gradients in the intensity that were observed from the Pioneers 10 and 11 spacecraft.
