A Flush-Rivet Milling Tool

The investigation of machine-countersunk flush rivets for aircraft described in reference 1 revealed the necessity of having the height of the rivet heads greater than the depth of the countersunk holes if tightly riveted joints were to be obtained. If ordinary roundhead rivets were inserted from the opposite side of the joint and the countersunk heads formed in the driving of the rivets filled the countersunk holes completely, still tighter joints were obtained. In either case the rivets protruded above the skin surface after driving, and the protruding portion of the rivet heads had to be removed in order to obtain flush rivets. A number of requests have been received for a description of the tool used to mill off the protruding portion of the rivet heads. This report contains assembly and detail drawings of the latest flush-rivet milling tool used at the NACA Structures Research Laboratory. Figure 6 shows the tool in operation. This tool is quite satisfactory for 1/8-inch rivets, but a more powerful motor is recommended for use with larger rivets.

Enigmatic Nodule-Bearing Rocks in the Mafic to Ultramafic Diana Mills Pluton, Piedmont Province, Virginia

The Silurian Diana Mills pluton is a metamorphosed mafic-ultramafic body in the Piedmont Province of Virginia. Major rock types in the pluton include metadiorite and chlorite‐amphibole rock, with lesser amounts of hornblendite. However, the most visually striking rocks, found at 4 locations, consist of tan‐weathering nodules in a dark green matrix. The purpose of this study was to investigate the origin of these nodular rocks. All rocks show evidence of greenschistfacies metamorphism, but relict igneous textures are preserved locally. Apart from the nodules, Ca‐amphibole is ubiquitous in all rock types. Nodules are dominated by serpentine or talc (+magnetite +/- chromite), and many show a thin (less than or equal to 5 mm) radially oriented shell of serpentine against adjacent matrix. The nodules are ultramafic (Mg# approx. 80-90, up to7,563 ppm Cr, up to 2,038 ppm Ni), and their normative mineralogy is dominated by olivine and orthopyroxene. Thus, they represent metamorphosed harzburgites and pyroxenites. Matrix minerals are dominantly amphibole + chlorite, along with variable amounts of talc + magnetite. Some matrix samples are chlorite‐rich, probably reflecting metasomatic reaction with nodules (i.e., they are small‐scale ''blackwalls''). Matrix samples are also ultramafic (high Mg#, Cr, and Ni). The matrix of the nodule‐bearing outcrops is essentially the same as other chlorite‐amphibole rocks elsewhere in the pluton. We consider these rocks to represent emplacement of an original hornblende peridotite crystal mush (a mixture of crystals and hydrous melt), which locally carried harzburgitic nodules. The nodules most likely represent the earliest‐formed cumulates from the Diana Mills parent magma.

Epoxy blanket protects milled part during explosive forming

Epoxy blanket protects chemically milled or machined sections of large, complex structural parts during explosive forming. The blanket uniformly covers all exposed surfaces and fills any voids to support and protect the entire part.

Etching process mills PH 14-8 Mo alloy steel to precise tolerances

Chemical milling process, which combines an aqua regia etchant with a sulfonate wetting agent, produces finishes on PH 14-8 molybdenum alloy steel to precise tolerances. This process permits precision removal of excess metal from the steel in annealed and/or aged conditions.

Mill profiler machines soft materials accurately

Mill profiler machines bevels, slots, and grooves in soft materials, such as styrofoam phenolic-filled cores, to any desired thickness. A single operator can accurately control cutting depths in contour or straight line work.

Computer used to program numerically controlled milling machine

Computer program automatically directs a numerically controlled milling machine through a series of cutting and trimming actions. It accepts engineering data points, passes smooth curve segments through the points, breaks the resulting curves into a series of closely spaced points, and transforms these points into the form required by the mechanism.
