Interfacial X-Ray Scattering from Small Surfaces: Adapting Mineral-Fluid Structure Methods for Microcrystalline Materials

Crystal truncation rod (CTR) X-ray diffraction is an invaluable tool for measuring mineral surface and adsorbate structures, and has been applied to several environmentally and geochemically important systems. Traditionally, the method has been restricted to single crystals with lateral dimensions >3 mm. Minerals that meet this size criterion represent a minute fraction of those that are relevant to interfacial geochemistry questions, however. Crystal screening, data collection, and CTR measurement methods have been developed for crystals of <0.3 mm in lateral size using the manganese oxide mineral chalcophanite (ZnMn 3 O 7 •3H 2 O) as a case study. Furthermore, this work demonstrates the feasibility of applying the CTR technique to previously inaccessible surfaces, opening up a large suite of candidate substrates for future study.

A new synthetic method of [Ru(2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine)(2,2′-bipyridine)Cl] + complexes using cis -[Ru(2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine)(NCCH 3 ) 2 Cl] + as an intermediate and comparison to a method using [Ru(benzene)(2,2′-bipyridine)Cl] + intermediates

A new method of synthesizing [Ru(terpy)(bpy)Cl] + (terpy = 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine, bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine) complexes using the starting material cis-[Ru(terpy)(NCCH 3 ) 2 Cl](PF 6 ) is reported. The yields of four derivatives ([Ru(terpy)(NN)Cl](PF 6 ): NN = bpy, 1; 4,4′-(MeO) 2 bpy, 2; 4,4′-(CF 3 ) 2 bpy, 3; 2,2′-biquinoline, 4) with this method range from 58 to 94 % and are similar to or greater than a known reaction in which the starting material is [Ru(benzene)(NN)Cl](PF 6 ). However, the use of cis-[Ru(terpy)(NCCH 3 ) 2 Cl](PF 6 ) results in lower levels of homoleptic Ru byproducts in the synthesis of 1 as compared to the use of [Ru(benzene)(bpy)Cl](PF 6 ) as determined by 1 H NMR spectroscopy. In addition, a high-purity and gram-scale synthesis of cis-[Ru(terpy)(NCCH 3 ) 2 Cl](PF 6 ) that does not use column chromatography is reported, in contrast to the original synthesis disclosed in the literature.

Method of Distributions for Two‐Phase Flow in Heterogeneous Porous Media

Abstract Multiscale heterogeneity and insufficient characterization data for a specific subsurface formation of interest render predictions of multi‐phase fluid flow in geologic formations highly uncertain. Quantification of the uncertainty propagation from the geomodel to the fluid‐flow response is typically done within a probabilistic framework. This task is computationally demanding due to, for example, the slow convergence of Monte Carlo simulations (MCS), especially when computing the tails of a distribution that are necessary for risk assessment and decision‐making under uncertainty. The frozen streamlines method (FROST) accelerates probabilistic predictions of immiscible two‐phase fluid flow problems; however, FROST relies on MCS to compute the travel‐time distribution, which is then used to perform the transport (phase saturation) computations. To alleviate this computational bottleneck, we replace MCS with a deterministic equation for the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of travel time. The resulting CDF‐FROST approach yields the CDF of the saturation field without resorting to sampling‐based strategies. Our numerical experiments demonstrate the high accuracy of CDF‐FROST in computing the CDFs of both saturation and travel time. For the same accuracy, it is about 5 and 10 times faster than FROST and MCS, respectively.

Porting fragmentation methods to GPUs using an OpenMP API: Offloading the resolution-of-the-identity second-order Møller–Plesset perturbation method

Here, using an OpenMP Application Programming Interface, the resolution-of-the-identity second-order Møller–Plesset perturbation (RI-MP2) method has been off-loaded onto graphical processing units (GPUs), both as a standalone method in the GAMESS electronic structure program and as an electron correlation energy component in the effective fragment molecular orbital (EFMO) framework. First, a new scheme has been proposed to maximize data digestion on GPUs that subsequently linearizes data transfer from central processing units (CPUs) to GPUs. Second, the GAMESS Fortran code has been interfaced with GPU numerical libraries (e.g., NVIDIA cuBLAS and cuSOLVER) for efficient matrix operations (e.g., matrix multiplication, matrix decomposition, and matrix inversion). The standalone GPU RI-MP2 code shows an increasing speedup of up to 7.5× using one NVIDIA V100 GPU with one IBM 42-core P9 CPU for calculations on fullerenes of increasing size from 40 to 260 carbon atoms using the 6-31G(d)/cc-pVDZ-RI basis sets. A single Summit node with six V100s can compute the RI-MP2 correlation energy of a cluster of 175 water molecules using the correlation consistent basis sets cc-pVDZ/cc-pVDZ-RI containing 4375 atomic orbitals and 14 700 auxiliary basis functions in ~0.85 h. In the EFMO framework, the GPU RI-MP2 component shows near linear scaling for a large number of V100s when computing the energy of an 1800-atom mesoporous silica nanoparticle in a bath of 4000 water molecules. The parallel efficiencies of the GPU RI-MP2 component with 2304 and 4608 V100s are 98.0% and 96.1%, respectively.

STUDIES ON PIPELINE POLYETHYLENES IN HYDROGEN GAS ENVIRONMENTS USING IN-SITU AND EX-SITU CHARACTERIZATION METHODS

Polymeric materials are commonplace in the natural gas infrastructure as distribution pipes, coatings, seals, and gaskets. Under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Energy HyBlend program, one of the means to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is with replacing natural gas, either partially or completely, with hydrogen. This approach makes it imperative that we conduct near-term and long-term materials compatibility research in these relevant environments. Insights into the effects of hydrogen and hydrogen gas blends on polymer integrity can be gained through both ex-situ and in-situ analytical methods. Our work represented here highlights a study of the behavior of pipeline polyethylene (PE) materials, including HDPE (Dow 2490 and GDB50) and MDPE (Ineos and legacy Dupont Aldyl A), when exposed to hydrogen by means of in-situ X-ray scattering and ex-situ Raman spectroscopy techniques. Samples were tested in ex-situ hydrogen and argon gas environments and in-situ hydrogen environments to identify differences due to permeation and solubility of these gases. These methods complemented each other because Raman spectroscopy could capture permanent effects after materials were removed from gaseous environments, and in-situ X-ray scattering analysis collected real-time data to elucidate the impact of the gas environment on polymer microstructure. Data collected revealed that the aforementioned polymers did not show significant changes in crystallinity and microstructure under the exposure conditions tested. Our findings from these studies will help establish real-time effects caused by hydrogen gas transport through pipeline polyethylenes by way of its influence on polymer structure and chemistry, which is directly related to pipeline mechanical strength and longevity of service.

A novel post-processing method for progressive failure analysis of brittle composite compression

Finite element analysis of brittle materials in axial compression typically uses element deletion to allow continued global deformation post-element-failure. However, element deletion produces cyclic load-displacement curves that underestimate energy absorption and are not representative of a continuum system. Two key observations support the conclusion that results from an appropriately discretized model can be an adequate representation of a continuum system. Specifically, the frequency of the oscillations in the load-displacement curve is directly dependent upon element length in the loading direction, and the peak amplitudes of oscillations are mesh size independent. A method of post-processing the analysis results, by connecting the peak amplitudes of oscillations, is proposed and applied to a series of continuous carbon fiber composite crush tubes. The load-displacement curve, stable crushing load, and specific energy absorption of the post-processed results compare well to an experimental study of crush tubes with similar layups.

Method for automatic correction of offset drift in online sensors

Abstract Successful operation and optimization of water treatment systems hinge on the availability of high-quality online sensor measurements. Ideally, the available measurements should be simultaneously accurate (i.e., unbiased and precise), representative, voluminous, and timely. This remains a pain-point in current water infrastructures, forming a barrier to a wider adoption of advanced and autonomous control systems. While short-lived symptoms, such as outliers and spikes, can be detected or corrected with state-of-the-art tools for fault detection and identification, it is much more difficult to detect, diagnose, and correct the symptoms of slow faults, such as changes in offset or sensitivity due to drift. The time scale of drift is often longer than the time scales of the system dynamics of interest. Moreover, sensor drift has been shown to occur at the same time and with similar rates when sensors are exposed to the same conditions. This challenges data quality management strategies based on redundancy. In this contribution, we develop a new method, including both a hands-off sensor calibration mechanism and an information-seeking control architecture that can handle the unique challenge of simultaneous and similar drift in online sensors.

Devices and methods for increasing the speed and efficiency at which a computer is capable of modeling a plurality of random walkers using a density method

A method for increasing a speed or energy efficiency at which a computer is capable of modeling a plurality of random walkers. The method includes defining a virtual space in which a plurality of virtual random walkers will move among different locations in the virtual space, wherein the virtual space comprises a plurality of vertices and wherein the different locations are ones of the plurality of vertices. A corresponding set of neurons in a spiking neural network is assigned to a corresponding vertex such that there is a correspondence between sets of neurons and the plurality of vertices, wherein a spiking neural network comprising a plurality of sets of spiking neurons is established. A virtual random walk of the plurality of virtual random walkers is executed using the spiking neural network, wherein executing includes tracking how many virtual random walkers are at each vertex at a given time increment.

Trajectory Ensemble Methods Provide Single-Molecule Statistics for Quantum Dynamical Systems

The emergence of experiments capable of probing quantum dynamics at the single-molecule level requires the development of new theoretical tools capable of simulating and analyzing these dynamics beyond an ensemble-averaged description. In this article, we present an efficient method for sampling and simulating the dynamics of the individual quantum systems that make up an ensemble and apply it to study the nonequilibrium dynamics of the ubiquitous spin-boson model. We generate an ensemble of single-system trajectories, and we analyze this trajectory ensemble using tools from classical statistical mechanics. Our results demonstrate that the dynamics of quantum coherence is highly heterogeneous at the single-system level due to variations in the initial bath configuration, which significantly affects the transient exchange of coherence between the system and its bath. Here, we observe that single systems tend to retain coherence over time scales longer than that of the ensemble. We also compute a novel thermodynamic entanglement entropy that quantifies a thermodynamic driving force favoring system–bath entanglement.

A High-Throughput Method to Define Additive Manufacturing Process Parameters: Application to Haynes 282

This paper demonstrates how an analytical and experimental method can be used to rapidly define the 45 additive manufacturing settings for a new alloy where the process parameters were previously unknown. A nickel-based superalloy, Haynes 282, was chosen for the analysis. An experimental matrix of focused processing parameters was predicted with a dimensionless number and 100 samples were printed using the Selective Laser Melting technique. High-throughput measurements validated the predicted process conditions needed to achieve desired density and hardness. The whole process was completed in 16 hours. The new technique was confirmed with analytical processing maps adopted by the metal additive manufacturing community. With the predicted set of process parameters, microstructural characterizations and tensile testing were used to confirm the predictions. The resultant as-fabricated microstructures have refined length scales of both microsegregation and secondary phase distributions. As a result, the mechanical properties were comparable within the predicted processing window and exhibited high strength and high ductility.
