A multiple-plate, multiple-pinhole camera for X-ray gamma-ray imaging

Plates with identical patterns of precisely aligned pinholes constitute lens system which, when rotated about optical axis, produces continuous high resolution image of small energy X-ray or gamma ray source. Camera has applications in radiation treatment and nuclear medicine.

Optimal design of structures with multiple design variables per group and multiple loading conditions on the personal computer

A finite element based programming system for minimum weight design of a truss-type structure subjected to displacement, stress, and lower and upper bounds on design variables is presented. The programming system consists of a number of independent processors, each performing a specific task. These processors, however, are interfaced through a well-organized data base, thus making the tasks of modifying, updating, or expanding the programming system much easier in a friendly environment provided by many inexpensive personal computers. The proposed software can be viewed as an important step in achieving a 'dummy' finite element for optimization. The programming system has been implemented on both large and small computers (such as VAX, CYBER, IBM-PC, and APPLE) although the focus is on the latter. Examples are presented to demonstrate the capabilities of the code. The present programming system can be used stand-alone or as part of the multilevel decomposition procedure to obtain optimum design for very large scale structural systems. Furthermore, other related research areas such as developing optimization algorithms (or in the larger level: a structural synthesis program) for future trends in using parallel computers may also benefit from this study.

Multiple quasars for multiple images

Consideration is given to the possibility that the two quasar images of 1146 + 111, 1635 + 267, and 2345 + 007 respectively are pairs of physically distinct quasars in galaxy associations. It is shown that, at the same redshifts as the quasars, only galaxy associations of exceptional richness would be identifiable in the existing data. Calculations are performed to assess the probability of pairs of quasars appearing in galaxy associations and it is found that physical pairs could appear with the observed frequency provided that quasars are more common relative to galaxy associations at earlier epochs.

Multiple-Purpose Subsonic Naval Aircraft (MPSNA): Multiple Application Propfan Study (MAPS)

Study requirements, assumptions and guidelines were identified regarding carrier suitability, aircraft missions, technology availability, and propulsion considerations. Conceptual designs were executed for two missions, a full multimission aircraft and a minimum mission aircraft using three different propulsion systems, the UnDucted Fan (UDF), the Propfan and an advanced Turbofan. Detailed aircraft optimization was completed on those configurations yielding gross weight performance and carrier spot factors. Propfan STOVL conceptual designs were exercised also to show the effects of STOVL on gross weight, spot factor and cost. An advanced technology research plan was generated to identify additional investigation opportunities from an airframe contractors standpoint. Life cycle cost analysis was accomplished yielding a comparison of the UDF and propfan configurations against each other as well as against a turbofan with equivalent state of the art turbo-machinery.

Flight-determined stability analysis of multiple-input-multiple-output control systems

Singular value analysis can give conservative stability margin results. Applying structure to the uncertainty can reduce this conservatism. This paper presents flight-determined stability margins for the X-29A lateral-directional, multiloop control system. These margins are compared with the predicted unscaled singular values and scaled structured singular values. The algorithm was further evaluated with flight data by changing the roll-rate-to-aileron-command-feedback gain by +/- 20 percent. Also presented are the minimum eigenvalues of the return difference matrix which bound the singular values. Extracting multiloop singular values from flight data and analyzing the feedback gain variations validates this technique as a measure of robustness. This analysis can be used for near-real-time flight monitoring and safety testing.

Simultaneous Excitation of Multiple-Input Multiple-Output CFD-Based Unsteady Aerodynamic Systems

A significant improvement to the development of CFD-based unsteady aerodynamic reduced-order models (ROMs) is presented. This improvement involves the simultaneous excitation of the structural modes of the CFD-based unsteady aerodynamic system that enables the computation of the unsteady aerodynamic state-space model using a single CFD execution, independent of the number of structural modes. Four different types of inputs are presented that can be used for the simultaneous excitation of the structural modes. Results are presented for a flexible, supersonic semi-span configuration using the CFL3Dv6.4 code.

Testing of a Miniature Loop Heat Pipe with Multiple Evaporators and Multiple Condensers for Space Applications

Thermal performance of a miniature loop heat pipe (MLHP) with two evaporators and two condensers is described. A comprehensive test program, including start-up, high power, low power, power cycle, and sink temperature cycle tests, has been executed at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center for potential space applications. Experimental data showed that the loop could start with heat loads as low as 2W. The loop operated stably with even and uneven evaporator heat loads, and even and uneven condenser sink temperatures. Heat load sharing between the two evaporators was also successfully demonstrated. The loop had a heat transport capability of l00W to 120W, and could recover from a dry-out by reducing the heat load to evaporators. Low power test results showed the loop could work stably for heat loads as low as 1 W to each evaporator. Excellent adaptability of the MLHP to rapid changes of evaporator power and sink temperature were also demonstrated.

Effects of Gravity on Start-up of a Miniature Loop Heat Pipe with Multiple Evaporators and Multiple Condensers

This paper describes an experimental study on the effect of gravity on the start-up of a miniature loop heat pipe (MLHP) with two evaporators and two condensers. Each evaporator has an outer diameter of 9 mm and has its own integral compensation chamber (CC). The MLHP was placed under five configurations where the relative elevation and tilt among the loop components were varied. The four well-known initial conditions between the evaporator and CC prior to the LHP start-up were created in this experimental study through combinations of: 1) the test configuration; 2) the method of preconditioning the loop prior to start-up, and 3) the heat load distribution among the evaporators. A total of 165 start-ups were conducted under the five test configurations. All of these start-ups were successful. However, the effect of gravity on start-up transients was clearly seen under otherwise the same heat load distribution and sink temperatures. An analytical model was used to simulate the MLHP transient behaviors, and the model predictions agreed very well with the experimental results.

Start-up Behavior of a Miniature Loop Heat Pipe with Multiple Evaporators and Multiple Condensers

This paper presents the test results on start-up behaviors of a miniature loop heat pipe (MLHP) with two evaporators and two condensers. The MLHP start-up tests were conducted by varying the heat load to one or both evaporators, the condenser sink temperatures, and with or without compensation chamber (CC) temperature control. More than 90 start-up tests have been conducted in horizontal position, and all were successful. Test results showed robust start-ups of the MLHP with heat loads of 1W to 100W. Loop started as soon as the heat load was applied, without a large temperature overshoot. The efficacy and good repeatability of the start-ups with CC active temperature control by using thermoelectric cooler (TEC) was demonstrated. The ability of the loop to start with parasitic heat gain caused by cooling the CC temperature below ambient temperature was also demonstrated.
