ECAR-6581 Rev 0 Hydraulic Assessment of Conceptual Design of Ring-type Spacer for MARVEL Reactor

The fuel rods in the nuclear reactor core can be deformed due to various reasons, such as thermal expansion, the effect of irradiation, hydrodynamic effects, etc. The deformation of the fuel rods can lead to contact between them, which can deteriorate the coolability of the nuclear fuel and increase the potential risk of failure. To prevent the fuel rods from coming into contact with each other, a ring-type spacer may be introduced in the MARVEL reactor. However, the ring spacers can result in an additional pressure drop, which could restrict the natural circulation operation of the MARVEL reactor. Therefore, this ECAR will examine the additional pressure drop caused by the introduction of the ring-type spacer by comparing with the bare rod condition.

This report documents a bounding post-shutdown dose rates over time in the upper confinement area and above the top of the TREXc Pit Shield at the end of two years of operation of the MARVEL microreactor. The dose rates take into consideration the doses from the core fission products, the sodium-potassium coolant (NaK), the steel components, the Stirling engines, and the gallium eutectic (EGaInSn) secondary coolant. The MCNP model in this analysis is based on the 90% design of the MARVEL reactor from ECAR- 7447. Neutron fluence used as inputs to this analysis were calculated in ECAR-7447.

Progress on the MARVEL Cybersecurity by Design Model-Based Systems Engineering Project

Formal model-based systems engineering (MBSE) combines a model, systems thinking, and systems engineering to visually depict the boundaries, context, and behavior of interconnected systems, facilitating effective design, development, and utilization of engineered systems throughout the systems engineering lifecycle. Although nuclear reactor vendors employ these tools to integrate functionality, performance, and safety, they are not yet addressing digital risk concerns introduced by use of operational technology, such as digital instrumentation and control systems. To accomplish this objective, the Microreactor Applications Research Validation and EvaLuation (MARVEL) microreactor was used as an MBSE case study. This real-world application provides a first-of-a-kind opportunity to demonstrate the benefits of integrating digital risk and cybersecurity into the MBSE design process of a nuclear reactor. This paper provides an update of the ongoing MARVEL Cyber MBSE project as it specifically relates to the integration of digital risk management and cybersecurity by design.

MARVEL Instrumentation, Control, and Software Considerations

This paper details the various I&C considerations and design decisions made throughout the MARVEL (Micro-reactor Applications Research Validation and Evaluation) project, including sensor and actuator selection, safety-related functionality, digital control hardware and software, and testing methodologies. Key challenges such as managing radiation, temperature, and space constraints are discussed, along with the trade-offs between using standard equipment and custom solutions. The successful integration of off-the-shelf components, the emphasis on minimizing safety-related instrumentation, and the lessons learned from prototyping and testing are highlighted. The authors aim to provide insights that can benefit future micro-reactor designs and emphasize the importance of real-world testing in advancing reactor technology.

FOR-868 Microreactor Applications Research Validation and Evaluation (MARVEL) Project

The Microreactor Applications Research Validation and Evaluation (MARVEL) reactor will offer experimental capabilities that are not currently available at DOE’s national laboratories. The test bed will perform R&D on the fundamental features, operations, and behaviors of microreactor technologies and help industry partners quickly test, develop, and demonstrate their technologies. The liquid- metal cooled microreactor will produce energy using small amounts of high- assay, low-enriched uranium (HALEU) from available research materials. Its design is primarily based on existing technology and will be built using off-the- shelf components to the extent practical. The reactor will be built inside the Transient Reactor Test (TREAT) Facility Micro-Reactor Experiment Cell (T- REXC), a separate project governed by the requirements of FOR-684, “Transient Reactor Test (TREAT) Facility Micro-Reactor Experiment Cell (T REXC),” and outside the scope of this document.
