Dynamic energy losses in thin Ni-Fe films during magnetization reversal studied by observation of M-H loop
The effect of V2O5 additions to PbO-Bi2O3 flux was investigated with respect to the properties of Bi-YIG epitaxial films for magnetic bubble devices. The Bi content of the films (including an estimated 10 percent Pt(2+) were calculated from Faraday rotation measurements. For films grown at constant supercooling, the Bi content increased by 60 percent as the V2O5 content of the flux was increased from 0 to 9 mol pct. Lattice constant data were shown to agree with measured Bi and Ca-Si contents. The growth-induced magnetic anisotropy increased proportionally to the Bi content and could be fairly represented by a model; however, the coefficients of the model vary widely between data sets for different melt compositions.
The magnetic flux relaxation behavior of YBa2Cu3O(7-x) thin film on LaAlO3 for H parallel c was studied in the range of 4.2-40 k and 0.2-1.0 T. Both the normalized flux relaxation rate (S) and the net flux pinning energy (U) increase continuously from 1.3 x 10 exp -2 to 3.0 x 10 exp -2 and from 70-240 meV respectively, as the temperature (T) increases from 10 to 40 K. This behavior is consistent with the thermally activated flux motion model. At low temperatures, however, S is found to decrease much more slowly as compared with kT, in contradiction to the thermal activation model. This behavior is discussed in terms of the athermal quantum tunneling of flux lines. The magnetic field dependence of U, however, is not completely understood.

A document discusses polymer nano - composite superparamagnetic actuators that were prepared by the addition of organically modified superparamagnetic nanoparticles to the polymer matrix. The nanocomposite films exhibited large deformations under a magnetostatic field with a low loading level of 0.1 wt% in a thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer (TPU) matrix. The maximum actuation deformation of the nanocomposite films increased exponentially with increasing nanoparticle concentration. The cyclic deformation actuation of a high-loading magnetic nanocomposite film was examined in a low magnetic field, and it exhibited excellent reproducibility and controllability. Low-loading TPU nanocomposite films (0.1-2 wt%) were transparent to semitransparent in the visible wavelength range, owing to good dispersion of the magnetic nanoparticles. Magnetoactuation phenomena were also demonstrated in a high-modulus, high-temperature polyimide resin with less mechanical deformation.

Experimental process makes films with interesting magnetic and magneto-optical properties. Films of dilute magnetic semiconductor alloy Cd1-xMnxTe deposited on glass and GaAs substrates by metalorganic chemical-vapor deposition (MOCVD). Devices made with Cd1-xMnxTe films known to exhibit strong photoluminescence, stimulated emission, and magnetically-tunable lasing action. In addition, energy-band gaps of such material tailored by altering its composition - property giving flexibility in development of high-efficiency cascade solar photovoltaic cells. Performs at atmospheric pressure, resulting in more-uniform films, covering larger area, and enabling higher production rate.
The phenomenon of wall contraction characterized by a peak in the velocity field relationship and a region of negative differential mobility is observed. Uniaxial magnetic thin films of various compositions and magnetic properties are studied in careful interrupted pulse experiments. The observed results agree quite well with the theory for bulk samples.
This paper discusses the fabrication aspects of a sensor device that is based on a sputter deposited multilayer giant magnetoresistive (GMR) sensor. The device consists of a micromachined microstructure (membrane), GMR sensor, and a sputtered hard magnetic thin film element on to microstructure.
Liquid phase expitaxy was investigated to determine its applicability to fabricating magnetic rare earth garnet films for spacecraft data recording systems. Two mixed garnet systems were investigated in detail: (1) Gd-Y and (2) Eu-Yb-Y. All films were deposited on Gd3Ga5012 substrates. The uniaxial anisotropy of the Gd-Y garnets is primarily stress-induced. These garnets are characterized by high-domain wall mobility, low coercivity and modest anisotropy. Characteristic length was found to be relatively sensitive to temperature. The Eu-Yb-Y garnets exhibit acceptable mobilities, good temperature stability and reasonable quality factors. The uniaxial anisotropy of these garnets is primarily growth-induced. The system is well suited for compositional "tailoring" to optimize specific desirable properties. Liquid phase epitaxy can be used to deposit Gd3Ga5012 spacing layers on magnetic garnet films and this arrangement possesses certain advantages over more conventional magnetic filmspacing layer combinations. However, it cannot be used if the magnetic film is to be ion implanted.

Ferrofluidics Corporation's recent innovation is a spindle for rotating computer discs that supports the disc's rotating shaft on a film of magnetic fluid instead of conventional ball bearings. According to its developers, the spindle offers greatly increased rotational stability, meaning substantially reduced vibration and mechanical noise, and non- repeatable runout. This allows disc drives to store two to 10 times more information.
An analysis is made of the magnetic stress anisotropy field (Hks) arising from internal and external stress sources in plated-wire memory elements. The analysis takes into consideration circumferential composition variation and cylindrical geometry of the Permalloy film. Expressions are derived relating Hks to uniaxial film stress, average composition, and amplitude of composition variation. A result of particular importance is that even for average zeromagnetostrictive composition (ZMC) films, Hks may still make an appreciable contribution to the total anisotropy field if the composition is not uniform. Calculated Hks characteristics are shown to correlate with anisotropy field changes observed in annealing experiments. Examples are given to show the importance of composition uniformity in determining the stability of the anisotropy field. The utility of the analysis is extended by the inclusion of data expressing the inverse relation between anisotropy field and easy-axis dispersion in the film.
