A unified perspective on robot control - The energy Lyapunov function approach

A unified framework for the stability analysis of robot tracking control is presented. By using an energy-motivated Lyapunov function candidate, the closed-loop stability is shown for a large family of control laws sharing a common structure of proportional and derivative feedback and a model-based feedforward. The feedforward can be zero, partial or complete linearized dynamics, partial or complete nonlinear dynamics, or linearized or nonlinear dynamics with parameter adaptation. As result, the dichotomous approaches to the robot control problem based on the open-loop linearization and nonlinear Lyapunov analysis are both included in this treatment. Furthermore, quantitative estimates of the trade-offs between different schemes in terms of the tracking performance, steady state error, domain of convergence, realtime computation load and required a prior model information are derived.

Attitude control with realization of linear error dynamics

An attitude control law is derived to realize linear unforced error dynamics with the attitude error defined in terms of rotation group algebra (rather than vector algebra). Euler parameters are used in the rotational dynamics model because they are globally nonsingular, but only the minimal three Euler parameters are used in the error dynamics model because they have no nonlinear mathematical constraints to prevent the realization of linear error dynamics. The control law is singular only when the attitude error angle is exactly pi rad about any eigenaxis, and a simple intuitive modification at the singularity allows the control law to be used globally. The forced error dynamics are nonlinear but stable. Numerical simulation tests show that the control law performs robustly for both initial attitude acquisition and attitude control.

Non-Linear Structural Dynamics Characterization using a Scanning Laser Vibrometer

This paper presents the use of a scanning laser vibrometer and a signal decomposition method to characterize non-linear dynamics of highly flexible structures. A Polytec PI PSV-200 scanning laser vibrometer is used to measure transverse velocities of points on a structure subjected to a harmonic excitation. Velocity profiles at different times are constructed using the measured velocities, and then each velocity profile is decomposed using the first four linear mode shapes and a least-squares curve-fitting method. From the variations of the obtained modal \ielocities with time we search for possible non-linear phenomena. A cantilevered titanium alloy beam subjected to harmonic base-excitations around the second. third, and fourth natural frequencies are examined in detail. Influences of the fixture mass. gravity. mass centers of mode shapes. and non-linearities are evaluated. Geometrically exact equations governing the planar, harmonic large-amplitude vibrations of beams are solved for operational deflection shapes using the multiple shooting method. Experimental results show the existence of 1:3 and 1:2:3 external and internal resonances. energy transfer from high-frequency modes to the first mode. and amplitude- and phase- modulation among several modes. Moreover, the existence of non-linear normal modes is found to be questionable.

A biased filter for linear discrete dynamic systems.

A recursive estimator, the ridge filter, was developed for the linear discrete dynamic estimation problem. Theorems were established to show that the ridge filter can be, on the average, closer to the expected value of the system state than the Kalman filter. On the other hand, Kalman filter, on the average, is closer to the instantaneous system state than the ridge filter. The ridge filter has been formulated in such a way that the computational features of the Kalman filter are preserved.

Parameter and Structure Inference for Nonlinear Dynamical Systems

A great many systems can be modeled in the non-linear dynamical systems framework, as x = f(x) + xi(t), where f() is the potential function for the system, and xi is the excitation noise. Modeling the potential using a set of basis functions, we derive the posterior for the basis coefficients. A more challenging problem is to determine the set of basis functions that are required to model a particular system. We show that using the Bayesian Information Criteria (BIC) to rank models, and the beam search technique, that we can accurately determine the structure of simple non-linear dynamical system models, and the structure of the coupling between non-linear dynamical systems where the individual systems are known. This last case has important ecological applications.

Structure/load dependent vectors for linear structural dynamic analysis

The dynamic solution vectors yielded by the present structure/load dependent-vectors method for large-scale linear structural dynamic analyses involving complex loadings can be used as starting vectors, so that both structure and load characteristics are encompassed by the basis vectors. The method is shown to entail fewer vectors than current alternatives for a given level of accuracy, especially in the cases of structures that have external concentrated masses. Numerical results are presented which illustrate the advantages of this dependent-vectors method relative to other reduction methods.

Image sensor with high dynamic range linear output

Designs and operational methods to increase the dynamic range of image sensors and APS devices in particular by achieving more than one integration times for each pixel thereof. An APS system with more than one column-parallel signal chains for readout are described for maintaining a high frame rate in readout. Each active pixel is sampled for multiple times during a single frame readout, thus resulting in multiple integration times. The operation methods can also be used to obtain multiple integration times for each pixel with an APS design having a single column-parallel signal chain for readout. Furthermore, analog-to-digital conversion of high speed and high resolution can be implemented.

Dynamic compensator design for robust stability of linear uncertain systems

This paper presents a robust linear dynamic compensator design algorithm for linear uncertain systems whose parameters vary within given bounded sets. The algorithm explicitly incorporates the structure of the uncertainty into the design procedure and utilizes the elemental perturbation bounds developed recently. The special cases of linear state feedback and measurement feedback controllers are considered and the relative trade offs are discussed. The design algorithm is illustrated with the help of a simple example.

A computational algorithm for spacecraft control and momentum management

Developments in the area of nonlinear control theory have shown how coordinate changes in the state and input spaces of a dynamical system can be used to transform certain nonlinear differential equations into equivalent linear equations. These techniques are applied to the control of a spacecraft equipped with momentum exchange devices. An optimal control problem is formulated that incorporates a nonlinear spacecraft model. An algorithm is developed for solving the optimization problem using feedback linearization to transform to an equivalent problem involving a linear dynamical constraint and a functional approximation technique to solve for the linear dynamics in terms of the control. The original problem is transformed into an unconstrained nonlinear quadratic program that yields an approximate solution to the original problem. Two examples are presented to illustrate the results.

An approach to simultaneous system design. II - Nonswitching gain and dynamic feedback compensation by algebraic geometric methods

This paper studies structured uncertainty problems in feedback system design, considers a compact parameterization of the space of linear dynamical systems and introduces 'base points' and 'critical points' as two algebraic-geometric objects that have significance in sensitivity and robustness studies, respectively. Using the Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation theory, the author obtains a necessary and sufficient condition for simultaneous stabilization of a structured one-parameter family of plants. A recent result due to Kharitonov, on the simultaneous stability of a parameterized family of polynomials, leads to a sufficiency condition for simultaneous stabilization of a structured multiparameter family of plants. Furthermore, the author considers 'simultaneous pole placement' of an r-tuple of plants as a means to arbitrarily tune the natural frequencies of a multimode linear dynamical system. The concept of 'nondegenerate' and 'twisted' r-tuples of plants is introduced as the pole placement problem is studied via Schubert enumerative geometry as an intersection problem on the associated Grassmannian. Various other design problems, viz., the strong stabilization problem and the dead beat control problem, are also considered.

Robust state estimation with imperfect sensors

Robustness properties of extended Kalman-type filters are investigated for time-varying plants when nonlinearities or linear dynamics are present at the plant input and output. Sufficient conditions for the asymptotic stability (of the state estimation error) in the absence of noise are obtained when the nonlinearities or the linear dynamics are perfectly known. When the nonlinearities are known only within bands of uncertainty, the estimation error is shown to be ultimately bounded under certain conditions. The results obtained highlight the robustness properties of such filters, which are similar to, but not exact duals of those of linear quadratic regulators.

Optimal limited state variable feedback controllers for linear systems.

Optimized static and dynamic linear system compensator designs with a priori fixed dimensions are discussed. Expressions are derived to determine the parameters of these designs, including the fixed-gain output feedback, the time-varying output feedback, and time-invariant compensation. A relevant deterministic off-line optimization problem is formulated, and the properties of a solution to the problem are analyzed. A unified design philosophy for limited state-variable control problems of essentially deterministic systems is developed. The philosophy incorporates design constraints, a careful selection of performance criteria, and interpretation of the results.

Robust perturbation guidance for the advanced launch system

Real-time optimal trajectory generation for constructing guidance laws seems feasible. However, these deterministic guidance schemes may be sensitive to system and environmental uncertainties. To overcome this deficiency, it is suggested that the accessory problem about an optimal path, which generates a quadratic cost criterion in the perturbed states and control away from the optimal trajectory, be used as the cost criterion. A modified quadratic cost is minimized with respect to the perturbed control but maximized with respect to additive uncertainties in the linearized dynamics and in the linearized measurements. In this way, a robust neighboring optimum scheme is constructed. A perturbed guidance scheme is stated. To illustrate the theory, the second stage of a launch vehicle is considered. An optimal path is generated, and about this path a robust neighboring optimum guidance law is constructed and tested.

Algorithm computes "bang-bang" control laws for single- or multiple-input systems, both those describable by linear dynamical equations and those describable by nonlinear dynamical equations that are linear in control vectors. Algorithm needed because analytical solutions of "bang-bang" control problems intractable for all but simplest systems.
