Holographic Fabrication of 3D Moiré Photonic Crystals Using Circularly Polarized Laser Beams and a Spatial Light Modulator

A moiré photonic crystal is an optical analog of twisted graphene. A 3D moiré photonic crystal is a new nano-/microstructure that is distinguished from bilayer twisted photonic crystals. Holographic fabrication of a 3D moiré photonic crystal is very difficult due to the coexistence of the bright and dark regions, where the exposure threshold is suitable for one region but not for the other. In this paper, we study the holographic fabrication of 3D moiré photonic crystals using an integrated system of a single reflective optical element (ROE) and a spatial light modulator (SLM) where nine beams (four inner beams + four outer beams + central beam) are overlapped. By modifying the phase and amplitude of the interfering beams, the interference patterns of 3D moiré photonic crystals are systemically simulated and compared with the holographic structures to gain a comprehensive understanding of SLM-based holographic fabrication. We report the holographic fabrication of phase and beam intensity ratio-dependent 3D moiré photonic crystals and their structural characterization. Superlattices modulated in the z-direction of 3D moiré photonic crystals have been discovered. This comprehensive study provides guidance for future pixel-by-pixel phase engineering in SLM for complex holographic structures.

Subsurface Spectroscopy in Heterogeneous Materials Using Self-Healing Laser Beams

Self-healing optical beams are a class of propagation modes that can recover their beam shapes after distortion or partial blockage. This self-healing property makes them attractive for use in applications involving turbid media as they can—in theory—penetrate further into these materials than standard Gaussian beams. In this paper, we characterize the propagation of two different self-healing beams (Bessel and Airy) through a solid scattering material with different scatterer concentrations and find that both beams do recover after scattering for samples below a threshold scatterer concentration. Additionally, we test the applicability of both beam shapes for improved sub-surface spectroscopy in heterogeneous materials using fluorescent particles and find that there is an average fluorescence intensity enhancement of 1.3× using self-healing beams versus a standard Gaussian beam.

Fully Automated Profile-based Calibration Strategy for Airborne and Terrestrial Mobile LiDAR Systems with Spinning Multi-beam Laser Units

LiDAR-based mobile mapping systems (MMS) are rapidly gaining popularity for a multitude of applications due to their ability to provide complete and accurate 3D point clouds for any and every scene of interest. However, an accurate calibration technique for such systems is needed in order to unleash their full potential. In this paper, we propose a fully automated profile-based strategy for the calibration of LiDAR-based MMS. The proposed technique is validated by comparing its accuracy against the expected point positioning accuracy for the point cloud based on the used sensors’ specifications. The proposed strategy was seen to reduce the misalignment between different tracks from approximately 2 to 3 m before calibration down to less than 2 cm after calibration for airborne as well as terrestrial mobile LiDAR mapping systems. In other words, the proposed calibration strategy can converge to correct estimates of mounting parameters, even in cases where the initial estimates are significantly different from the true values. Furthermore, the results from the proposed strategy are also verified by comparing them to those from an existing manually-assisted feature-based calibration strategy. The major contribution of the proposed strategy is its ability to conduct the calibration of airborne and wheel-based mobile systems without any requirement for specially designed targets or features in the surrounding environment. The above claims are validated using experimental results conducted for three different MMS – two airborne and one terrestrial – with one or more LiDAR unit.

Dynamic beam shaping—Improving laser materials processing via feature synchronous energy coupling

Today, tailored laser beams are rarely used and thus an opportunity to optimize existing or introduce new processes is missed. New methods of dynamic beam shaping have the potential to change that in future. This keynote paper deals with methods allowing a transient energy input into the workpiece at such time scales that the underlying interaction processes are guided towards the desired result. It shows principles, categorizes necessary system technology, and gives application examples to familiarize the reader with the topic. It postulates that time-scale-dependent coupling between transient energy input and addressed process features is key for achieving the optimum.

Uncertainties Induced by Processing Parameter Variation in Selective Laser Melting of Ti6Al4V Revealed by In-Situ X-ray Imaging

Selective laser melting (SLM) additive manufacturing (AM) exhibits uncertainties, where variations in build quality are present despite utilizing the same optimized processing parameters. In this work, we identify the sources of uncertainty in SLM process by in-situ characterization of SLM dynamics induced by small variations in processing parameters. We show that variations in the laser beam size, laser power, laser scan speed, and powder layer thickness result in significant variations in the depression zone, melt pool, and spatter behavior. On average, a small deviation of only ~5% from the optimized/reference laser processing parameter resulted in a ~10% or greater change in the depression zone and melt pool geometries. For spatter dynamics, small variation (10 μm, 11%) of the laser beam size could lead to over 40% change in the overall volume of the spatter generated. The responses of the SLM dynamics to small variations of processing parameters revealed in this work are useful for understanding the process uncertainties in the SLM process.

Spectral channel splicer for spectral beam combining laser system

A spectral beam combining system includes a spectral channel splicer comprising a plurality of reflectors and a spectral beam combiner comprising a diffraction optical element such as a diffraction grating. This spectral beam combining system may facilitate combining an increased number of spectral channels thereby producing higher optical power of the combining beam system.
