Modernization of PLC-Based Control Systems at SNS

When the SNS site was built around 20 years ago, the Conventional Facilities (CF) control systems were de-signed using 2 communication protocols to allow pro-grammable logic controllers (PLCs) to interface with motors, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and remote input and output (I/O) devices. The protocol chosen to control motors and VFDs is DeviceNet, a CANbus-based protocol developed by Allen-Bradley, a subsidiary of Rockwell Automation. The protocol chosen to communi-cate with remote I/O is ControlNet, another protocol developed by Allen-Bradley. Both of these protocols are obsolete and present reliability and maintainability is-sues, particularly DeviceNet. As the Control Systems Section at SNS is working to modernize control systems throughout the machine, a major goal for PLC-based systems is to remove the obsolete communication proto-cols in favor of standard, ubiquitous Ethernet. To this end, any new VFDs installed use Ethernet communica-tion. Many VFDs are currently being replaced in the Central Utilities Building (CUB) and the Central Exhaust Facility (CEF) and are being removed from DeviceNet in favor of Ethernet communication. Planning is underway to retrofit Eaton Intelligent Technology motor control centers (MCCs) in the Target Building to remove particu-larly troublesome DeviceNet adaptors and replace them with Ethernet adaptors for each motor starter. The Con-trolNet network in the CUB has been demolished, with I/O drops integrated into a local Ethernet network, im-proving sustainability and maintainability.

Machine Learning–Guided Boolean Matrix Inference for Real-Time O-RAN Conflict Detection

Open Radio Access Networks (O-RAN) are emerging, software-driven cellular architectures that promote flexibility by enabling components from different vendors to interoperate. Multiple control applications called xApps can independently adjust network parameters in near real time, often without awareness of each other's actions. This creates a system highly prone to unintended conflicts and performance degradation due to the inherent complexity of such openness. To model such systems and ultimately prevent or mitigate xApp conflicts, it is essential to understand the dynamic relationships between xApps (A), the control parameters they adjust (P), and the resulting KPI responses (K). While the mappings from A to P and from K to A can often be derived from xApp specifications, the relationship from P to K is typically hidden within the system’s dynamics and must be inferred from observed data. We propose a novel data-driven Boolean inference framework that uncovers the hidden P?K dependencies using machine learning and interpretable rule induction. Continuous parameters and KPIs are first binarized using decision tree classifiers, and a binary influence matrix L is then inferred by solving Boolean matrix equations over time. This compact representation improves interpretability and enables real-time tracking of dynamically evolving parameter-KPI dependencies. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in a realistic mobile handover scenario, where it accurately recovers the underlying logic and enables proactive conflict detection.

Cyber-Informed Engineering (CIE) – Engineered Controls Database and Use

Cyber-Informed Engineering (CIE) addresses the reality that cyber-attacks on engineered systems can have consequences far beyond data loss or disruption of digital networks. When control systems are compromised, safety, reliability, and performance of the physical process itself may be threatened. This database is meant to establish clear examples and guidance for defining and applying engineered controls in CIE. It explains what engineered controls are, how they differ from information security measures, and how they are integrated into system design. The goal is to ensure that resilience is engineered into systems from the outset. Unlike cybersecurity protections that defend the digital layer, engineered controls act directly at the physical and algorithmic levels to guarantee that unacceptable consequences are prevented or limited. CIE keeps the consequences of a cyber attack from impacting the safety, reliability, and performance of engineered systems.

Mechanisms enabling reconfigurability and long-term retention in vanadium oxide electrochemical memory

Phase coexistence in nanoscale electrochemical random-access memory (ECRAM) has recently been demonstrated to enable both information storage and extraordinary reconfigurability. These proof-of-principle demonstrations have left the mechanistic details of such a process unresolved. Particularly, the mechanisms that stabilize the multiple phases, and the underlying processes behind sustained memory retention, remain unclear, and are necessary to design such devices. Here we report microscale ECRAM devices composed of V⁢O𝑥, which enables us to directly probe the active region in an operando fashion using optical techniques. Using Raman mapping, we show the phase coexistence driven by the electrochemical injection of O vacancies to be spatially uniform (i.e., with no filaments). The stability was observed to be unusually long, with 1% loss over 14 years in ambient conditions. First-principles calculations of the oxygen vacancy formation energies in V⁢O 𝑥 further support the thermodynamic coexistence of multiple V⁢O 𝑥 phases and clarify the origin of the observed long-term retention in the ECRAM devices. Further, we demonstrate single devices that can be voltage programmed to exhibit synaptic, neuronal, and reconfigurable logic gate functionalities. Furthermore, we not only uncover the phase coexistence mechanism that may help device design, but also demonstrate the circuit-level applications of reconfigurability.
