Magnon damping and mode softening in quantum double-exchange ferromagnets

We present a comprehensive analysis of the magnetic excitations and electronic properties of fully quantum double-exchange ferromagnets, i.e. systems where ferromagnetic (FM) ordering emerges from the competition between spin, charge, and orbital degrees of freedom, but without the canonical approximation of using classical localized spins. Specifically, we investigate spin excitations within the Kondo lattice-like model, as well as a two-orbital Hubbard Hamiltonian in proximity to the orbital-selective Mott phase. Computational analysis of the magnon dispersion, damping, and spectral weight within these models reveals unexpected phenomena, such as magnon mode softening and the anomalous decoherence of magnetic excitations as observed in earlier experimental efforts, but explained here without the use of the phononic degrees of freedom. We show that these effects are intrinsically linked to incoherent spectral features near the Fermi level, which arise due to the quantum nature of the local (on-site) triplets. This incoherent spectrum leads to a Stoner-like continuum on which spin excitations scatter, governing magnon lifetime and strongly influencing the dynamical spin structure factor. Our study explores the transition from coherent to incoherent magnon spectra by varying the electron density. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the magnitude of the localized spin mitigates decoherence by suppressing the incoherent spectral contributions near the Fermi level. We also discuss the effective J 1 –J 2 spin Hamiltonian, which can accurately describe the large doping region characterized by the magnon-mode softening. Finally, we show that this behavior is also present in multiorbital models with partially filled orbitals, namely, in systems without localized spin moments, provided that the model is in a strong coupling regime. Our results potentially have far-reaching implications for understanding FM ordering in various multi-band systems. These findings establish a previously unknown direct connection between the electronic correlations of those materials and spin excitations.

Flat-band driven Kondo breakdown and reentrant effects in heavy-fermion moiré superlattices

Moiré superlattices (MSLs) in van der Waals heterostructures have demonstrated their incredible power in driving emergent electronic phenomena, some of which are reminiscent of those usually only observed in bulk strongly correlated quantum materials. With the recent discovery of van der Waals 𝑓-electron materials, the design of novel MSLs of intrinsic strong correlation is now within the reach. Here we study the novel electron phases of two-dimensional heavy-fermion MSL with increasingly diluted 𝑓-electron local moments. By applying dynamical mean-field theory with numerical renormalization group as an impurity solver, we demonstrate the appearance of a different energy scale and a reentrant Kondo breakdown in connection with the emergence of a flat band in the system. We further compare our numerical findings with predictions derived from the Lieb-Mattis theorem and show the necessity of this energy scale to consistently reconcile the predictions with the conventional single-impurity limit for exceedingly large unit cells.

Magnetic-field-induced nontrivial electronic state in the Kondo-lattice semimetal CeSb

Synergic effect of electronic correlation and spin-orbit coupling is an emerging topic in topological materials. Central to this rapidly developing area are the prototypes of strongly correlated heavy-fermion systems. Recently, some Ce-based compounds are proposed to host intriguing topological nature, among which the electronic properties of CeSb are still under debate. Herein, we report a comprehensive study combining magnetic and electronic transport measurements, and electronic band-structure calculations of this compound to identify its topological nature. Quantum oscillations are clearly observed in both magnetization and magnetoresistance at high fields, from which one pocket with a nontrivial Berry phase is recognized. Angular-dependent magnetoresistance shows that this pocket is elongated in nature and corresponds to the electron pocket as observed in LaBi. Nontrivial electronic structure of CeSb is further confirmed by first-principle calculations, which arises from spin splitting in the fully polarized ferromagnetic state. These features indicate that magnetic field can induce nontrivial topological electronic states in this prototypical Kondo semimetal.

Topological antiferromagnetic semimetal for spintronics: A case study of a layered square-net system EuZnSb 2

Here, we use the first-principles and effective Hamiltonian methods to study the electronic structure and magnetic properties of a recently synthesized layered antiferromagnetic square-net topological semimetal EuZnSb2 [Phys. Rev. Res. 2, 033462 (2020)]. The main message of the paper is that effects of small changes in the band structure produced by the magnetic ordering and changes in the orientation of the Néel vector are amplified in such transport properties as the spin Hall conductivity. We predict that the effects of the broken symmetry introduced by the ordering of the Néel vector, being very weak in the bulk, are pronounced in the surface electronic dispersion, suggesting that surface probes may be more suited to measure them. The coexistence of the magnetism with many other competing phases make this material interesting and possibly useful for quantum spintronics applications.

Skyrmion crystal from RKKY interaction mediated by 2D electron gas

We consider a $C_6$ invariant lattice of magnetic moments coupled via a Kondo exchange $J$ with a 2D electron gas (2DEG). The effective Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction between the moments stabilizes a magnetic skyrmion crystal in the presence of magnetic field and easy-axis anisotropy. An attractive aspect of this mechanism is that the magnitude of the magnetic ordering wave vectors, $Q_ν(ν=1,2, 3)$, is dictated by the Fermi wave number $k_F:|Q_ν|=2k_F$. Consequently, the topological contribution to the Hall conductivity of the 2DEG becomes of the order of the quantized value, $e^2/h$, when $J$ is comparable to the Fermi energy $ε_F$.

Spin Polarons and Ferromagnetism in Doped Dilute Moiré-Mott Insulators

Moiré heterostructures of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exhibit Mott-insulating behavior both at half filling as well as at fractional fillings, where electronic degrees of freedom form self-organized Wigner crystal states. An open question concerns magnetic states obtained by lifting the pseudospin-1/2 degeneracy of these states at lowest temperatures. While at half filling virtual hopping is expected to induce (weak) antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, these are strongly suppressed when considering dilute filling fractions. We argue that, instead, a small concentration of doped electrons leads to the formation of spin polarons, inducing ferromagnetic order at experimentally relevant temperatures, consistent with recently observed ferromagnetic states in moiré TMD systems. Here, we predict explicit signatures of polaron formation in the magnetization profile.

Algebraic Hastatic Order in One-Dimensional Two-Channel Kondo Lattice

The two-channel Kondo lattice likely hosts a rich array of phases, including hastatic order, a channel symmetry breaking heavy Fermi liquid. In this work, we revisit its one-dimensional phase diagram using density matrix renormalization group and, in contrast to previous work, find algebraic hastatic orders generically for stronger couplings. These are heavy Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids with nonanalyticities at Fermi vectors captured by hastatic density waves. We also find a predicted additional nonlocal order parameter due to interference between hastatic spinors, not present at large N, and residual repulsive interactions at strong coupling suggesting non-Fermi-liquid physics in higher dimensions.

Kondo screening in a Majorana metal

Kondo impurities provide a nontrivial probe to unravel the character of the excitations of a quantum spin liquid. In the S = 1/2 Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice, Kondo impurities embedded in the spin-liquid host can be screened by itinerant Majorana fermions via gauge-flux binding. Here, we report experimental signatures of metallic-like Kondo screening at intermediate temperatures in the Kitaev honeycomb material α-RuCl 3 with dilute Cr 3+ (S = 3/2) impurities. The static magnetic susceptibility, the muon Knight shift, and the muon spin-relaxation rate all feature logarithmic divergences, a hallmark of a metallic Kondo effect. Concurrently, the linear coefficient of the magnetic specific heat is large in the same temperature regime, indicating the presence of a host Majorana metal. This observation opens new avenues for exploring uncharted Kondo physics in insulating quantum magnets.

Particle-hole symmetric slave-boson method for the mixed valence problem

We introduce an analytic slave-boson method for treating the finite-𝑈 Anderson impurity model. Our approach introduces two bosons to track both 𝑄 ⇌ 𝑄 ± 1 valence fluctuations and reduces to a single symmetric 𝑠 boson in the effective action, encoding all the high-energy atomic physics information in the boson's kinematics, while the low-energy part of the action remains unchanged across finite-𝑈, infinite-𝑈, and Kondo limits. We recover the infinite-𝑈- and Kondo-limit actions from our approach and show that the Kondo resonance already develops in the normal state when the slave boson has yet to condense. We show that the slave rotor and 𝑠 boson have the same algebraic structure, and we establish a unified functional integral framework connecting the 𝑠-boson and slave-rotor representations for the single-impurity Anderson model.

Kondo effect in ferromagnetic quantum critical CeRh 6 ⁢Ge 4

The mechanism of a pressure-induced quantum critical point in the heavy fermion ferromagnet CeRh 6 ⁢Ge 4 has attracted interest, as ferromagnetic quantum criticality in a clean itinerant Ce compound is typically avoided. The localized versus itinerant character of the 4⁢𝑓 electrons is a key aspect for understanding this behavior. We investigated the electronic structure of the 4⁢𝑓 shell in CeRh 6 ⁢Ge 4 using core-level photoelectron and x-ray absorption spectroscopy, demonstrating the hybridization of Ce 4⁢𝑓 with the conduction electrons. Linearly polarized x-ray absorption reveals a temperature-dependent linear dichroism consistent with the crystal-electric-field sequence as inferred from the static susceptibility. This dichroism cannot be described by an ionic full-multiplet model alone, but is reproduced by including the Kondo effect within a single-impurity Anderson model in the noncrossing approximation. The Kondo effect mixes higher-lying crystal-field states into a resulting multiorbital ground state with 4⁢𝑓 occupancy, 𝑛 𝑓 ∼ 0.9. Deviations at low temperatures between the measured linear dichroism and calculated dichroism suggest an orbital-dependent Kondo effect. A scenario in which there is a multiorbital ground state and orbital-dependent Kondo hybridization should be a starting point for a model of pressure-induced criticality in CeRh 6 ⁢Ge 4 .

Floquet engineering multichannel Kondo physics

Floquet engineering has been used to engineer novel interactions in uncorrelated and magnetic insulating materials. Here, we apply this technique to simple heavy fermion models, showing that driving these systems with periodic light introduces emergent Kondo screening channels with distinct symmetries, where the allowed channels are controlled by the light polarization. Furthermore, these systems can be driven through multi-channel degeneracy points, dynamically realizing multi-channel Kondo impurities and lattices that can be used to explore quantum critical phenomena and potentially enhance superconductivity.

Emergence of antiferromagnetic correlations and Kondolike features in a model for infinite layer nickelates

We report a determinant quantum Monte Carlo study of a two-band model, inspired by infinite-layer nickelates, focusing on the influence of interlayer hybridization between $3d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ orbitals derived from Ni (or Ni and O) in one layer and rare-earth (R) 5d orbitals in the other layer, hereafter the Ni and R layers, respectively. For a filling with one electron shared between the two layers on average, interlayer hybridization leads to “self-doped" holes in the Ni layer and the absence of antiferromagnetic ordering, but rather the appearance of spin-density and charge-density stripe-like states. As the interlayer hybridization increases, both the Ni and R layers develop antiferromagnetic correlations, even though either layer individually remains away from half-filling. For hybridization within an intermediate range, roughly comparable to the intralayer nearest-neighbor hopping t Ni , the model develops signatures of Kondo-like physics.

Combined experimental-theoretical study of electron mobility-limiting mechanisms in SrSnO 3

The discovery and development of ultra-wide bandgap (UWBG) semiconductors is crucial to accelerate the adoption of renewable power sources. This necessitates an UWBG semiconductor that exhibits robust doping with high carrier mobility over a wide range of carrier concentrations. Here we demonstrate that epitaxial thin films of the perovskite oxide Nd x Sr 1 – x SnO 3 (SSO) do exactly this. Nd is used as a donor to successfully modulate the carrier concentration over nearly two orders of magnitude, from 3.7 × 10 18 cm –3 to 2.0 × 10 20 cm –3 . Despite being grown on lattice-mismatched substrates and thus having relatively high structural disorder, SSO films exhibited the highest room-temperature mobility, ~70 cm 2 V –1 s –1 , among all known UWBG semiconductors in the range of carrier concentrations studied. The phonon-limited mobility is calculated from first principles and supplemented with a model to treat ionized impurity and Kondo scattering. This produces excellent agreement with experiment over a wide range of temperatures and carrier concentrations, and predicts the room-temperature phonon-limited mobility to be 76–99 cm 2 V –1 s –1 depending on carrier concentration. This work establishes a perovskite oxide as an emerging UWBG semiconductor candidate with potential for applications in power electronics

Distinct effect of Kondo physics on crystal field splitting in electron and spin spectroscopies

Magnetic anisotropy is a key feature of rare earth materials from permanent magnets to heavy fermions. Here we explore the complex interplay of Kondo physics and anisotropy, and their effect on different experimental probes of magnetic anisotropy in a minimal 𝐽=3/2 Anderson impurity model using the numerical renormalization group. While anisotropy suppresses Kondo screening, virtual valence fluctuations enhance the anisotropy. We find distinct renormalization of the magnetic anisotropy measured via dynamical spin response (inelastic neutron scattering) versus electronic excitations in the impurity spectral function (resonant inelastic x-ray and scanning tunneling spectroscopy). The two measurement types have different responses and dependencies on the temperature and Kondo scales.

Linear sigma dark matter

We present a model of self-interacting dark matter based on QCD-like theories and inspired by the proximity of a 0 (980 ± 20) to the $K\bar{K}$ (990) threshold. Dark matter is comprised of dark pions which self-scatter via the σ resonance close to the ππ threshold. While the linear sigma model serves as a qualitative guide, a fully unitary description of the scattering in the strongly coupled regime is given by effective range theory. The introduction of a kinetically mixed dark photon allows the dark pion to either freeze-out or -in. We study the viable parameter space which explains the observed relic abundance while evading all current constraints. Searches for dark matter self interactions at different scales, (in)direct detection signals, and (in)visibly-decaying dark photons will test this model in the near future.

Surface Local Impurity Scattering as a Probe for Topological Kondo Insulators

Shortly after the discovery of topological band insulators, topological Kondo insulators (TKIs) is also theoretically predicted. The latter has ignited revival interest in the properties of Kondo insulators. Currently, the feasibility of topological nature in SmB 6 is intensively analyzed by several complementary probes. Here by starting with a minimal-orbital Anderson lattice model, the local electronic structure is explored in a Kondo insulator. It is showed that the two strong topological regimes sandwiching the weak topological regime give rise to a single Dirac cone, which is located near the center or corner of the surface Brillouin zone. It is further found that, when a single impurity is placed on the surface, low-energy resonance states are induced in the weak scattering limit for the strong TKI regimes and the resonance level moves monotonically across the hybridization gap with the strength of impurity scattering potential; while low energy states can only be induced in the unitary scattering limit for the weak TKI regime, where the resonance level moves universally toward the center of the hybridization gap. These impurity-induced low-energy quasiparticles will lead to characteristic signatures in scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, which has recently found success in probing into exotic properties in heavy fermion systems.

Quantum magnetism of iron-based ladders: Blocks, spirals, and spin flux

Motivated by increasing experimental evidence of exotic magnetism in low-dimensional iron-based materials, we present a comprehensive theoretical analysis of magnetic states of the multiorbital Hubbard ladder in the orbital-selective Mott phase (OSMP). Here, the model we used is relevant for iron-based compounds of the AFe 2 X 3 family (where A=Cs, Rb, Ba, K are alkali metals and X=S, Se are chalcogenides). To reduce computational effort, and obtain almost exact numerical results in the ladder geometry, we utilize a low-energy description of the Hubbard model in the OSMP—the generalized Kondo-Heisenberg Hamiltonian. Our main result is the doping vs interaction magnetic phase diagram. We reproduce the experimental findings on the AFe 2 X 3 materials, especially the exotic block magnetism of BaFe 2 Se 3 (antiferromagnetically coupled 2×2 ferromagnetic islands of the ↑↑↓↓ form). As in recent studies of the chain geometry, we also unveil block magnetism beyond the 2×2 pattern (with block sizes varying as a function of the electron doping) and also an interaction-induced frustrated block-spiral state (a spiral order of rigidly rotating ferromagnetic islands). Moreover, we predict new phases beyond the one-dimensional system: a robust regime of phase separation close to half filling, incommensurate antiferromagnetism for weak interaction, and a quantum spin-flux phase of staggered plaquette spin currents at intermediate doping. Finally, exploiting the bonding/antibonding band occupations, we provide an intuitive physical picture giving insight into the structure of the phase diagram.
