Interferometry science center

The Interferometry Science Center (ISC) is operated jointly by Caltech and JPL and is part of NASA's Navigator Program. The ISC has been created to facilitate the timely and successful execution of scientific investigations within the Navigator program, particularly those that rely on observations from NASA's interferometer projects. Currently, ISC is expected to provide full life cycle support for the Keck Interferometer, the Starlight mission, the Space Interferometry Mission, and the Terrestrial Planet Finder Mission. The nature and goals of ISc will be described.

(abstract) Three Dimensional Ice-Flow Velocity Estimation Using Satellite Radar Interferometry

An understanding of the flow dynamics of an ice sheet's outlet glaciers and ice streams requires knowledge of their flow velocity and strain rates (i.e., velocity gradients). Prior to the recent advent of satellite radar interferometry, it was not possible to measure detailed ice-flow velocity over the vast featureless areas that comprise most of the ice sheets. Since the launch of ERS-1, the use of satellite radar interferometry data for making densly sampled ice-flow velocity measurements has been firmly established by several studies. We have combined data from nonparallel orbits with surface slope information to make vector ice-flow measurements for the Ryder Glacier, Greenland. Our results for the Ryder are promising and indicate that repeat-pass interferometric data can be used to make vector measurements of ice velocity.

Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry

Synthetic aperture radar interferometry is an imaging technique for measuring the topography of a surface, its changes over time, and other changes in the detailed characteristics of the surface. This paper reviews the techniques of interferometry, systems and limitations, and applications in a rapidly growing area of science and engineering.

Observations of the Sea Ice Cover Using Satellite Radar Interferometry

The fringes observed in repeat pass interferograms are expressions of surface relief and relative displacements. The limiting condition in the application of spaceborne radar interferometry to the remote sensing of the sea ice cover is the large magnitude of motion between repeat passes. The translation and rotation of ice floes tend to decorrelate the observations rendering radar interferometry ineffective. In our study, we have located three images in the high Arctic during a period when there was negligible motion between repeat observations. The fringes obtained from these images show a wealth of information about the sea ice cover which is important in atmosphere-ice interactions and sea ice mechanics. These measurements provide the first detailed remote sensing view of the sea ice cover. Ridges can be observed and their heights estimated if the interferometric baseline allows. We have observed ridges with heights greater than 4m. The variability in the phase measurements over an area provides an indication of the large scale roughness. Relative centimetric displacements between rigid ice floes have been observed. We illustrate these observations with examples extracted from the interferograms formed from this set of ERS-1 SAR images.

Recent New Ideas and Directions for Space-Based Nulling Interferometry

This document is composed of two viewgraph presentations. The first is entitled "Recent New Ideas and Directions for Space-Based Nulling Interferometry." It reviews our understanding of interferometry compared to a year or so ago: (1) Simpler options identified, (2) A degree of flexibility is possible, allowing switching (or degradation) between some options, (3) Not necessary to define every component to the exclusion of all other possibilities and (4) MIR fibers are becoming a reality. The second, entitled "The Fiber Nuller," reviews the idea of Combining beams in a fiber instead of at a beamsplitter.

Atom Interferometry for Fundamental Physics and Gravity Measurements in Space

Laser-cooled atoms are used as freefall test masses. The gravitational acceleration on atoms is measured by atom-wave interferometry. The fundamental concept behind atom interferometry is the quantum mechanical particle-wave duality. One can exploit the wave-like nature of atoms to construct an atom interferometer based on matter waves analogous to laser interferometers.

A Possible Future for Space-Based Interferometry

We address the question of space interferometry following the recent outcome of the science themes selection by ESA for the L2/L3 missions slots. We review the current context of exoplanetary sciences and its impact for an interferometric mission. We argue that space interferometry will make a major step forward when the scientific communities interested in this technique will merge their efforts into a coherent technology development plan.

Atmospheric Limitations to Repeat-Track Radar Interferometry

In a recent mission, the Shuttle Imaging Radar (SIR-C) satellite devoted three days to repeat-track interferometry. The data was analyzed from a test site in the Mojave desert of California. Although good topography was obtained, most of the error was caused by turbulent water vapor in the lower atmosphere. Analysis of the effects of water vapor on multiple-track interferometry is given.

Design and Performance of an Astrometric Beam Combiner for Space Interferometry

This paper describes the design and performance of a brassboard astrometric beam combiner. The beam combiner was developed as part of the JPL Interferometry Technology Program (ITP). The purpose of this program is to test out design concepts in hardware that will eventually be used for the Space Interferometry Mission (SIM).

Neutron Grating Interferometry at the High Flux Isotope Reactor

Neutron imaging is a non-destructive probe that can spatially resolve bulk materials’ internal features/structures. Neutron imaging spatial resolution is driven by detector technology, i.e., pixel size, and is currently on the order of 10–20 µm. This limitation can be alleviated by the use of neutron grating interferometry – an advanced neutron imaging technique – that enables simultaneous access to three contrast mechanisms: attenuation, differential phase, and small-angle neutron scattering. Recently, a Talbot-Lau neutron grating interferometry has been implemented at the Multimodal Advanced Radiography Station at the High Flux Isotope Reactor. In this work, the design, setup and performance of the grating apparatus are presented.

Phase and contrast moiré signatures in two-dimensional cone beam interferometry

Neutron interferometry has played a distinctive role in fundamental science and characterization of materials. Moiré neutron interferometers are candidate next-generation instruments: they offer microscopy-like magnification of the signal, enabling direct camera recording of interference patterns across the full neutron wavelength spectrum. Here we demonstrate the extension of phase-grating moiré interferometry to two-dimensional geometries. Our fork-dislocation phase gratings reveal phase singularities in the moiré pattern, and we explore orthogonal moiré patterns with two-dimensional phase gratings. Our measurements of phase topologies and gravitationally induced phase shifts are in good agreement with theory. These techniques can be implemented in existing neutron instruments to advance interferometric analyses of emerging materials and precision measurements of fundamental constants. Search for monopole-dipole interactions with atom interferometry

Light, weakly coupled bosonic particles such as axions can mediate long range monopole-dipole interactions between matter and spins. We propose a new experimental method to detect such a force exerted by the spin of electrons on a freely falling atom using atom interferometry. The intrinsic advantages of atom interferometry, such as the freely falling nature of the atom and the well-defined response of the atom to external magnetic fields, should enable the proposed method to overcome systematic effects induced by vibrations, magnetic fields, and gravity. This approach is most suited to probe forces with a range ≳ 10 cm. With current technology, our proposed setup could potentially extend probes of such forces by an order of magnitude beyond present laboratory limits.

Optical interferometry study of film formation in lubrication of sliding and/or rolling contacts

Seventeen fluids of widely varying physical properties and molecular structure were chosen for study. Film thickness and traction were measured simultaneously in point contacts by interferometry, from which a new theory of traction was proposed. Film thickness was measured in line contacts by interferometry and electrical capacitance to establish correlation between these two methods. An interferometric method for the absolute determination of refractive index in the contact zone was developed and applied to point contact fluid entrapments. Electrical capacitance was used to study the thickness and properties of the soft surface film which sometimes forms near a metal-fluid interface.

Precision geodesy via radio interferometry.

Very-long-baseline interferometry experiments, involving observations of extragalactic radio sources, were performed in 1969 to determine the vector separations between antenna sites in Massachusetts and West Virginia. The 845.130-kilometer baseline was estimated from two separate experiments. The results agreed with each other to within 2 meters in all three components and with a special geodetic survey to within 2 meters in length; the differences in baseline direction as determined by the survey and by interferometry corresponded to discrepancies of about 5 meters. The experiments also yielded positions for nine extragalactic radio sources and allowed the hydrogen maser clocks at the two sites to be synchronized.
