A New Type of Weak Grid IBR Oscillations

This letter presents the discovery of a new type oscillations associated with inverter-based resources (IBRs) in weak grids. While typical weak grid oscillations become worse when the grid strength decreases and the power exporting level increases, this new type of oscillations appear when the grid becomes weaker and the power exporting level decreases. Electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation results are presented, along with eigenvalue loci for a varying power. The notable signatures of such oscillations are also remarked. In further analysis, a feedback system consisting of two blocks is derived with one block associated with the phase-locked-loop (PLL) and the other associated with the rest of the system. Here, this feedback system quantitatively demonstrates why insufficient damping in the PLL may be an issue for stability. Open-loop analysis shows that a larger phase lag in angle tracking in the low-frequency range due to high power exporting level at the weak grid condition is beneficial to the open-loop poles introduced by the PLL. And this is the reason why such oscillations may appear when power is ramping down.

DQ Admittance Model Extraction for IBRs via Gaussian Pulse Excitation

While $dq$ admittance models have shown to be very useful for stability analysis, extracting admittance models of inverter-based resources (IBRs) from the electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation environment using frequency scans takes time. In this letter, a new perturbation method based on Gaussian pulses in combination with the system identification algorithms shows great promise for parametric $dq$ admittance model extraction. We present the $dq$ admittance model extracting method for a type-4 wind turbine. Challenges in implementing Gaussian pulse excitation are also pointed out. In conclusion, the extracted $dq$ admittance model via the new method shows to have a high matching degree with the measurements obtained from frequency scans.

Generic EMT Modeling for IBR

In support of IEEE P2800.2, PNNL is developing an informative annex about “Generic EMT Modeling for IBR”. A literature review has been conducted, covering an IEEE Task Force, Cigre Working Group, IEEE standards, NERC reports, and research articles. In addition, the vendors of widely used simulation tools have been contacted to verify the availability of real-code models of inverters. Illustrative computer simulations will be conducted, once real-code models become accessible. If the simulation results of a real-code model are obtained, a comparative study will be performed.

How Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs) Affect Protection Relay Elements

This presentation starts with the details of IEEE 2800-2022 requirements of IBR for balanced and unbalanced faults. Then, it shows how to design a droop based GFM control to be IEEE 2800-2022 compliant. An performance evaluation is carried out to see if three OEM GFM inverters 2800-2022 compliant or not. And finally we show how IEEE 2800-2022 complaint and non-compliant GFM inverter will impact the transmission line protection elements, such as directional element and FID. Finally, recommendations are made if the GFM is not IEEE 2800-2022 compliant to disable the protection elements that rely on reliable and regulated negative sequence current.

Frequency-Nadir-Constrained Unit Commitment for Low-Inertia, High-IBR Island Power Systems [Slides]

The process of energy decarbonization in island power systems is accelerated due to the swift integration of inverter-based renewable energy resources (IBRs). The unique features of such systems, including rapid frequency changes resulting from potential generation outages or imbalances due to the unpredictability of renewable power, pose a significant challenge in maintaining the frequency nadir without external support. This paper presents a unit commitment (UC) model with data-driven frequency nadir constraints, including either frequency nadir or minimum inertia requirements, helping to limit frequency deviations after significant generator outages. The constraints are formulated using a linear regression model that takes advantage of real-world, year-long generation scheduling and dynamic simulation data. The efficacy of the proposed UC model is verified through a year-long simulation in an actual island power system using historical weather data. The alternative minimum inertia constraint, derived from actual system operation assumptions, is also evaluated. Findings demonstrate that the proposed frequency nadir constraint notably improves the system's frequency nadir under high photovoltaic (PV) penetration levels, albeit with a slight increase in generation costs, when compared to the alternative minimum inertia constraint.

A Systematic Framework for Tuning Open-Source Multifunctional IBR Models To Emulate OEM Black-Box Fault Dynamics

This paper presents a systematic framework to tune a generic IBR EMT model to match with an OEM provided balckbox inverter model based on the fault current responses. The key learnings and findings are summarized as follows: The tunable key parameters include inner control loops and current limiters to align the fault current magnitude, sequence content, and phase trajectories with the OEM models across diverse fault type and locations. The tuned model's fidelity is validated through comparative analysis with an OEM blackbox model, assessing both the fault current response and the responses of multiple relay elements. The results demonstrate the tuned generic model can trigger relay decision logic that is identical or near identical to that of the OEM model, thus generating very good match model for fault studies.

Kinetic modeling of an IBr solar pumped laser

The possibility of using an IBr laser as a solar-energy converter is examined theoretically, and reasons for its choice are given. Broadband absorption results in dissociation with the formation of excited metastable Br atoms, some of which then lase to the ground state Br. The ground state is depopulated by three-body recombination and, more importantly, by exchange reactions which more than compensate for the high quenching in heteronuclear halogen systems. Kinetic modeling indicates lasing is possible in the pulsed mode and possibly in the steady state with a cooled gas flow system. Temperature effects are discussed. The efficiency of the laser approaches 1.2 percent at optical thicknesses large enough for complete absorption of the photons.

Synthesis and stability of Br2, ICl and IBr intercalated pitch-based graphite fibers

The intercalation of halogens in pitch-based fiber is studied as well as the stability of the resultant intercalation compounds. It is found that IBr intercalates P-100 to yield a high-sigma GIC with attractive stability properties. During ICl intercalation, the presence of O2 interferes with the reaction and necessitates a higher threshold pressure for intercalation.

Fabrication and Resistivity of IBr Intercalated Vapor-Grown Carbon Fiber Composites

Composites using vapor-crown carbon fibers (VGCF), the most conductive of the carbon fiber types, are attractive for applications where low density, high strength, and at least moderate conductivity are required, such as electromagnetic interference shielding covers for spacecraft. The conductivity can be enhanced another order of magnitude by intercalation of the VGCF. If a high Z intercalate is used, the protection of components from ionizing radiation can be enhanced also. Thus, the intercalation of VGCF with IBr is reported. Since composite testing is required to verify properties, the intercalation reaction optimization, stability of the intercalation compound, scale-up of the intercalation reaction, composite fabrication, and resistivity of the resulting composites is also reported. The optimum conditions for low resistivity and uniformity for the scaled up reaction (20-30 g of product) were 114 C for at least 72 hr, yielding a fiber with a resistivity of 8.7+/-2 micro-Omega-cm. The thermal stability of these fibers was poor, with degradation occurring at temperatures as low as 40 C in air, though they were insensitive to water vapor. Composite resistivity was 20-30 micro-Omega-cm, as measured by contactless conductivity measurements, about a factor of five higher than would be expected from a simple rule of mixtures. The addition of 1.0 percent Br2, intercalated microfibers increased the resistivity of the composites by more than 20 percent.

Advanced Power-Hardware-in-the-Loop Evaluation of Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs)

Power-hardware-in-the-loop evaluation of IBRs has become more and more important as it provides reliable testing results to investigate the real responses of inverters with interconnected systems. A successful laboratory PHIL testing gives confidence of the hardware system to be deployed and de-risk technology integration prior to field deployment. So far, there are two important applications for PHIL evaluation: (1) test stability and functionality of large utility inverters into the system when it interconnects to the distribution systems/microgrids; and (2) test the collective grid service that inverters can provide to the grid. For the first application, the PHIL evaluation has high requirements for the stability and accuracy of the PHIL interface as the close-loop in digital real time simulator (DRTS) should replicate the actual current and voltage dynamics in the inverter. This is challenging because of the delays, sensing errors, nonlinearities of inverters, and hardware bandwidth limitations of the elements in the HIL loop. For the second application, multiple inverters will be tested resulting in multiple PCCs, which naturally causes competing dynamics and oscillations among hardware inverters if traditional PHIL interface is used. Therefore, new PHIL interface should be developed to compromise between stability and accuracy and represent the dispatched grid services for the hardware inverters. In this presentation, we will share our latest work in developing PHIL interface in these two applications to address the two key challenges.

Equivalent-Circuit Models of Grid-Forming IBRs for Electromagnetic-Transient Simulations: Preprint

We derive equivalent-circuit models of control- and physical-layer subsystems of grid-forming (GFM) inverter-based resources (IBRs) for electromagnetic-transient (EMT) simulations. Three different primary controllers are considered: droop, virtual synchronous machine (VSM), and dispatchable virtual oscillator control (dVOC). In addition, the models include cascaded voltage- and current-control loops, and LCL output filters. Simulations for a single-inverter setup and for a network of five inverters in a modified IEEE 14-bus topology are presented. The equivalent-circuit models simulated with analog electronic circuit-simulator software (in our case, LTspice) offer the same accuracy with up to 150x lower computational burden compared to block-diagram-based implementations in commercial off-the-shelf EMT software (in our case, MATLAB-Simulink).

Evaluation of a Reduced-Order Model for IBR Fault Response Representation via OEM Blackbox Models: Preprint

Driven by the need to capture the electromagnetic transients of transmission lines, inverter switching behavior, and detailed control systems, electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies have become increasingly important in industry, such as IBR interconnection study and fault study. However, original equipment manufacturer (OEM) inverter models typically include extensive parameters and proprietary settings that are unavailable to protection engineers. This paper introduces a data-driven, reduced-order model (ROM) developed as a PSCAD library component for use in EMT-based fault studies. The ROM replicates key OEM model behaviors without requiring detailed knowledge of control design or parameterization. The accompanying Python automation scripts streamline data generation, parameter fitting, and validation. The ROM's performance is demonstrated through comparison with both IEEE 2800-compliant and non-compliant OEM models in a real-world power system. Relay responses show nearly identical results, while simulation runtime is reduced by an average of 32.8\%, highlighting the ROM's practicality for protection engineers.
