Hybrid magnon-phonon localization enhances function near ferroic glassy states

Ferroic materials on the verge of forming ferroic glasses exhibit heightened functionality that is often attributed to competing long- and short-range correlations. However, the physics underlying these enhancements is not well understood. The Ni 45 Co 5 Mn 36.6 In 13.4 Heusler alloy is on the edge of forming both spin and strain glasses and exhibits magnetic field–induced shape memory and large magnetocaloric effects, making it a candidate for multicaloric cooling applications. We show using neutron scattering that localized magnon-phonon hybrid modes, which are inherently spread across reciprocal space, act as a bridge between phonons and magnons and result in substantial magnetic field–induced shifts in the phonons, triple the caloric response, and alter phase stability. We attribute these modes to the localization of phonons and magnons by antiphase boundaries coupled to magnetic domains. Because the interplay between short- and long-range correlations is common near ferroic glassy states, our work provides general insights on how glassiness enhances function.

Half-Metal Spin Filter for Highly Polarized Emission from GaAs Photocathodes

GaAs-based photocathodes are one of the major sources of spin-polarized electrons and are crucial for the upcoming Electron-Ion collider experiments which includes study of proton spin and spin parity violation in the standard model. The theoretical polarization limit in unstrained GaAs photocathodes is 50 % but only 35 % is routinely achieved in experiments. Spin selective filtering allows to boost the spin polarization beyond the 50 % theoretical limit. In this work, first-principle electronic calculations using standard Density Functional Theory are performed to predict possible Heusler alloy half-metal candidates to be used as spin-filter. Simulations are also performed to investigate the half-metallicity as function of the magnetic spin direction. Several devices are experimentally fabricated using dedicated Molecular Beam Epitaxy growth system. We implemented Quantum Efficiency and Polarization testing of these half-metal/GaAs heterostructures using a dedicated Mott polarimeter system. Photoemission can also be seen on magnetically switching the spin-filter direction accompanied by a change in sign of the asymmetry which is a qualitative proof of the spin-filtering effect.

Magnetism and structure of Fe- and Co-substituted Mn 2 NiSn

Mn-containing Heuslers are important magnetic shape-memory alloys for fast and precise actuators in manufacturing, robotics, surgery, and other applications. Among the key requirements are a high magnetization and favorable thermal properties, especially a high Curie temperature. In this work, the effect of Fe and Co substitution on the structure and magnetism of Mn 2 NiSn alloys is investigated. The Heusler alloys have been produced by melt spinning and characterized by X-ray diffraction, magnetometry, and electron-transport measurements. It was found that Co substitution for Mn enhances the Curie temperature of Mn 2 NiSn and both Co and Fe substitution improve its magnetization. Further, these improvements are accompanied by reduced thermal and magnetic hysteresis losses and by interesting structural changes, namely improved chemical order and site occupancies characteristic of quaternary (Y-ordered) Heuslers.

Emergence of asymmetric skew-scattering dominated anomalous Nernst effect in the spin gapless semiconductors Co 1+x Fe 1-x CrGa

Heusler alloy-based spin gapless semiconductors (SGSs) with very high Curie temperatures ( T C ) have recently gained enormous attention because of their unconventional electronic structures. They exhibit a nonzero band gap in one of the spin channels and a zero band gap in the other spin channel, making them an important class of materials for tunable spin transport. Here, we report the experimental observation of anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) in Co 1 + x Fe 1 - x CrGa ( x = 0 , 0.2, 0.4, and 0.5), which are the emerging quaternary Heusler alloy-based SGSs. While the electron-electron elastic scattering and the disorder-mediated weak localization effect play the major roles in electrical transport for all the samples at low temperatures, the magnon-drag effect was found to dominate the longitudinal thermoelectric transport. The ANE coefficient at room temperature increases from ≈ 0.018 μ V K - 1 for x = 0 to ≈ 0.063 μ V K - 1 for x = 0.5 , which is higher than that for Ni 81 Fe 19 and compressively strained SrRu O 3 films. Our analysis indicates that the observed ANE in these samples originates from asymmetric skew scattering of charge carriers.

Modeling of Substitutional Site Preference in Ordered Intermetallic Alloys

We investigate the site substitution scheme of specific alloying elements in ordered compounds and the dependence of site occupancy on compound stoichiometry, alloy concentration. This basic knowledge, and the interactions with other alloying additions are necessary in order to predict and understand the effect of various alloying schemes on the physical properties of a material, its response to various temperature treatments, and the resulting mechanical properties. Many theoretical methods can provide useful but limited insight in this area, since most techniques suffer from constraints in the type of elements and the crystallographic structures that can be modeled. With this in mind, the Bozzolo-Ferrante-Smith (BFS) method for alloys was designed to overcome these limitations, with the intent of providing an useful tool for the theoretical prediction of fundamental properties and structure of complex systems. After a brief description of the BFS method, its use for the determination of site substitution schemes for individual as well as collective alloying additions to intermetallic systems is described, including results for the concentration dependence of the lattice parameter. Focusing on B2 NiAl, FeAl and CoAl alloys, the energetics of Si, Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zr, Nb, Mo, Ru, Hf, Ta and W alloying additions are surveyed. The effect of single additions as well as the result of two simultaneous additions, discussing the interaction between additions and their influence on site preference schemes is considered. Finally, the BFS analysis is extended to ternary L1(sub 2) (Heusler phase) alloys. A comparison between experimental and theoretical results for the limited number of cases for which experimental data is available is also included.

Conformal High-Power-Density Half-Heusler Thermoelectric Modules: A Pathway toward Practical Power Generators

Thermoelectric generators (TEGs) exploiting the Seebeck effect provide a promising solution for waste heat recovery. Among the large number of thermoelectric (TE) materials, half-Heusler (hH) alloys are leading candidates for medium- to high-temperature power generation applications. However, the fundamental challenge in this field has been inhomogeneous material properties at large wafer diameters, insufficient power output from the modules, and rigid form factors of TE modules. This has restricted the transition of TEGs in practical applications for over three decades. Here, we successfully demonstrate large diameter wafers with uniform TE properties, high-power conformal hH TE modules for high-temperature application, and their direct integration on flue gas platforms, such as cylindrical tubes, to form large area flexible TEGs. This new conformal architecture design provides a breakthrough toward medium-/high-temperature TEGs over the conventional BiTe- and polymer-based flexible TEG design. In this work, a variable fill factor and greater flexibility due to the conformal design result in higher device performance as compared to conventional rigid TEG devices. Modules with 72-couple hH legs exhibit a device high-power-density of 3.13 W cm-2 and a total output power of 56.6 W under a temperature difference of 570 degrees C. These results provide a promising pathway toward widespread utilization of thermoelectric technology into the waste heat recovery application and will have a significant impact on the development of practical thermal to electrical converters.

High Thermoelectric Performance and Defect Energetics of Multipocketed Full Heusler Compounds

We report a first-principles density-functional study of electron-phonon interactions in and thermoelectric transport properties of the full Heusler compounds Sr 2 BiAu and Sr 2 SbAu. Our results show that ultrahigh intrinsic bulk thermoelectric performance across a wide range of temperatures is physically possible and point to the presence of multiply degenerate and highly dispersive carrier pockets as the key factor for achieving this. Sr 2 BiAu, which features ten energy-aligned low-effective-mass pockets (six along Γ-X and four at L), is predicted to deliver n-type zT=0.4-4.9 at T=100-700 K. Comparison with the previously investigated compound Ba 2 BiAu shows that the additional L pockets in Sr 2 BiAu significantly increase its low-temperature power factor to a maximum value of 12 mW m -1 K -2 near T=300 K. However, at high temperatures the power factor of Sr 2 BiAu drops below that of Ba 2 BiAu because the L states are heavier and subject to strong scattering by phonon deformation, as opposed to the lighter Γ-X states, which are limited by polar-optical scattering. Sr2SbAu is predicted to deliver a lower n-type zT=3.4 at T=750 K due to appreciable misalignment between the L and Γ-X carrier pockets, generally heavier scattering, and a slightly higher lattice thermal conductivity. Soft acoustic modes, which are responsible for the low lattice thermal conductivity, also increase the vibrational entropy and high-temperature stability of these Heusler compounds, suggesting that their experimental synthesis may be feasible. The dominant intrinsic defects are found to be Au vacancies, which drive the Fermi level towards the conduction band and work in favor of n-doping.

Exceptionally large anomalous Hall effect due to anticrossing of spin-split bands in the antiferromagnetic half-Heusler compound TbPtBi

We have investigated the magnetotransport properties and the topological electronic structure of the half-Heusler compound TbPtBi. Our experiments reveal an exceptionally large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the canted antiferromagnetic state of TbPtBi with the anomalous Hall angle reaching ~0.68–0.76, which is a few times larger than the previously reported record in GdPtBi. First-principles electronic structure and the associated anomalous Hall conductivity were computed in order to interpret the experimental results. Furthermore, our analysis shows that the AHE in TbPtBi does not originate from the Weyl points but that it is driven by the large net Berry curvature produced by the anticrossing of spin-split bands near the Fermi level in TbPtBi.

MgPd 2 Sb : A Mg-based Heusler-type superconductor

Here, we report the synthesis and physical properties of a full Heusler compound, MgPd 2 Sb, which we found to show superconductivity below T c = 2.2 K . MgPd 2 Sb was obtained by a two-step solid-state reaction method and its purity and cubic crystal structure [Fm-3m, a = 6.4523(1) Å ] were confirmed by powder x-ray diffraction. Normal and superconducting states were studied by electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements. The results show that MgPd 2 Sb is a type-II, weak coupling superconductor ( λ e-p = 0.53 ). The observed pressure dependence of T c (ΔT c /p ≈ -0.23 K / GPa ) is one of the strongest reported for a superconducting Heusler compound. The electronic structure, phonons, and electron-phonon coupling in MgPd 2 Sb were theoretically investigated. The obtained results are in agreement with the experiment, confirming the electron-phonon coupling mechanism of superconductivity. We compare the superconducting parameters to those of all reported Heusler-type superconductors.

First-principles insight into all-optical spin switching in the half-metallic Heusler ferrimagnet Mn 2 RuGa

All-optical spin switching (AOS) represents a new frontier in magnetic storage technology—spin manipulation without a magnetic field—but its underlying working principle is not well understood. Many AOS ferrimagnets such as GdFeCo are amorphous and renders the high-level first-principles study unfeasible. The crystalline half-metallic Heusler Mn 2 RuGa presents an opportunity. Here we carry out hitherto the comprehensive density functional investigation into the material properties of Mn 2 RuGa, and introduce two concepts—the spin anchor site and the optical active site—as two pillars for AOS in ferrimagnets. In Mn 2 RuGa, Mn(4a) serves as the spin anchor site, whose band is below the Fermi level and has a strong spin moment, while Mn(4c) is the optical active site whose band crosses the Fermi level. Our magneto-optical Kerr spectrum and band structure calculation jointly reveal that the delicate competition between the Ru-4d and Ga-4p states is responsible for the creation of these two sites. Furthermore these two sites found here not only present a unified picture for both Mn 2 RuGa and GdFeCo, but also open the door for future applications. Specifically, we propose a Mn 2 Ru x Ga-based magnetic tunnel junction where a single laser pulse can control magnetoresistance.

Semi-adsorption-controlled growth window for half-Heusler FeVSb epitaxial films

The electronic, magnetic, thermoelectric, and topological properties of Heusler compounds (composition XYZ or X 2 YZ) are highly sensitive to stoichiometry and defects. Here we establish the existence and experimentally map the bounds of a semi-adsorption-controlled growth window for semiconducting half-Heusler FeVSb films, grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). We show that due to the high volatility of Sb, the Sb stoichiometry is self-limiting for a finite range of growth temperatures and Sb fluxes, similar to the growth of III-V semiconductors such as GaSb and GaAs. Films grown within this window are nearly structurally indistinguishable by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED). Here, the highest electron mobility and lowest background carrier density are obtained towards the Sb-rich bound of the window, suggesting that Sb vacancies may be a common defect. Similar semi-adsorption-controlled bounds are expected for other ternary intermetallics that contain a volatile species Z = {Sb, As, Bi}, e.g., CoTiSb, LuPtSb, GdPtBi, and NiMnSb. However, outstanding challenges remain in controlling the remaining Fe/V (X/Y) transition metal stoichiometry.

Structure and magnetism in epitaxial Fe 1 + x VSb nanocomposite films

The combination of ferromagnetism and semiconducting behavior offers an avenue for realizing novel spintronics and spin-enhanced thermoelectrics. Here we demonstrate the synthesis of doped and nanocomposite half-Heusler Fe 1+x VSb films by molecular beam epitaxy. For dilute excess Fe (x < 0.1), we observe a decrease in the Hall electron concentration and no secondary phases in x-ray diffraction. Magnetotransport measurements suggest weak ferromagnetism that onsets at a temperature of T c ≈ 5 K. For higher Fe content (x > 0.1), ferromagnetic Fe nanostructures precipitate from the semiconducting FeVSb matrix. The Fe/FeVSb interfaces are epitaxial, as observed by transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction. Further, magnetotransport measurements suggest proximity-induced magnetism in the FeVSb from the Fe/FeVSb interfaces, or superparamagnetically coupled Fe-rich clusters, at an onset temperature of T c ≈ 20 K.

Magnetism and topological Hall effect in antiferromagnetic Ru 2 MnSn-based Heusler compounds

Heusler compounds and alloys based on them are of great recent interest because they exhibit a wide variety of spin structures, magnetic properties, and electron-transport phenomena. Their properties are tunable by alloying and we have investigated L2 1 -orderd compound Ru 2 MnSn and its alloys by varying the atomic Mn:Sn composition. While antiferromagnetic ordering with a Néel temperature of 361 K was observed in Ru 2 MnSn, the Mn-poor Ru 2 Mn 0.8 Sn 1.2 alloy exhibits properties of a diluted antiferromagnet in which there are localized regions of uncompensated Mn spins. Furthermore, a noncoplanar spin structure, evident from a topological Hall-effect contribution to the room-temperature Hall resistivity, is realized in Ru 2 Mn 0.8 Sn 1.2 . Finally, our combined experimental and theoretical analysis shows that in the Ru 2 Mn 0.8 Sn 1.2 alloy, the magnetic properties can be explained in terms of a noncoplanar antiferromagnetic scissor mode, which creates a small net magnetization in a magnetic field and subsequently yields a Berry curvature with a strong topological Hall effect.

Synthesis, structural, and magnetic properties of Heusler-type Mn 2-x Fe 1+x Ge (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) alloys

Bulk Mn 2-x Fe 1+x Ge (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) alloys have been synthesized by arc-melting followed by a low temperature homogenization thermal annealing, whereas for comparison purposes the Mn 2 FeGe alloy was also produced in ribbon form by rapid solidification. Here, a study of the structural and magnetic properties is presented. Contrary to theoretical predictions, Mn 2 FeGe crystallizes in a hexagonal DO 19 crystal structure (space group P63/mmc) and orders ferromagnetically with a saturation magnetization (M S ) value of ~1.7 µB/f.u. in the ground state. With the substitution of Fe for Mn in bulk Mn 2-x Fe 1+x Ge, we observed an increase in the FM interactions with a maximum MS value of 5.1 µ B /f.u. for x = 1.0, and a significant progressive increase in the Curie temperature (T C ) in a wide range spanning ~200 K to over 400 K.

Atomistic Simulations and Experimental Analysis of the Effect of Ti Additions on the Structure of NiAl

The Bozzolo-Ferrante-Smith (BFS) semiempirical method for alloy energetics is applied to the study of ternary additions to NiAl alloys. A detailed description of the method and its application to alloy design is given. Two different approaches are used in the analysis of the effect of Ti additions to NiAl. First, a thorough analytical study is performed, where the energy of formation, lattice parameter and bulk modulus are calculated for hundreds of possible atomic distributions of Ni, Al and Ti. Substitutional site preference schemes and formation of precipitates are thus predicted and analyzed. The second approach used consists of the determination of temperature effects on the final results, as obtained by performing a number of large scale numerical simulations using the Monte Carlo - Metropolis procedure and BFS for the calculation of the energy at every step in the simulation. The results indicate a sharp preference of Ti for Al sites in Ni-rich NiAl alloys and the formation of ternary Heusler precipitates beyond the predicted solubility limit of 5 at. % Ti. Experimental analysis of three NiAl+Ti alloys confirms the theoretical predictions.
