Bell state analyzer for spectrally distinct photons

We demonstrate a Bell state analyzer that operates directly on frequency mismatch. Based on electro-optic modulators and Fourier-transform pulse shapers, our quantum frequency processor design implements interleaved Hadamard gates in discrete frequency modes. Experimental tests on entangled-photon inputs reveal fidelities of ∼ <#comment/> 98 % <#comment/> for discriminating between the | Ψ <#comment/> + ⟩ <#comment/> and | Ψ <#comment/> − <#comment/> ⟩ <#comment/> frequency-bin Bell states. Our approach resolves the tension between wavelength-multiplexed state transport and high-fidelity Bell state measurements, which typically require spectral indistinguishability.

Texture measurements for the automatic classification of imagery

The stated purpose is to demonstrate the applicability of texture measurements for making distinctions between classes of imagery. Multispectral images obtained from aircraft and satellites have been successfully delineated into land use classes on the basis of density in the different spectral bands. However, spatial patterns can add additional information to improve classification accuracy. A comparison is made between the results obtained using five texture algorithms for separating land use classes using ERTS imagery. The transforms evaluated are the Karhunen-Loeve, the fast Fourier, the Walsh-Hadamard, the Slant, and a digital matched filter.

Constructing Quantum Spin Liquids Using Combinatorial Gauge Symmetry

In this work, we introduce the notion of combinatorial gauge symmetry—a local transformation that includes single spin rotations plus permutations of spins (or swaps of their quantum states)—that preserve the commutation and anticommutation relations among the spins. We show that Hamiltonians with simple two-body interactions contain this symmetry if the coupling matrix is a Hadamard matrix, with the combinatorial gauge symmetry being associated with the automorphism of these matrices with respect to monomial transformations. Armed with this symmetry, we address the physical problem of how to build quantum spin liquids with physically accessible interactions. In addition to its intrinsic physical significance, the problem is also tied to that of how to build topological qubits.

Multispectral data compression through transform coding and block quantization

Transform coding and block quantization techniques are applied to multispectral aircraft scanner data, and digitized satellite imagery. The multispectral source is defined and an appropriate mathematical model proposed. The Karhunen-Loeve, Fourier, and Hadamard encoders are considered and are compared to the rate distortion function for the equivalent Gaussian source and to the performance of the single sample PCM encoder.

Quantum computation of nuclear observables involving linear combinations of unitary operators

Here we present the quantum computation of nuclear observables where the operators of interest are first decomposed in terms of the linear combination of unitaries. Then we utilize the Hadamard test and the linear combination of unitaries based methods to compute the expectation values. We apply these methods to calculate the electric quadrupole moment of the deuteron. The results are compared for the Jordan-Wigner transformation and Gray code encoding. We discuss the versatility of our approach that can be utilized in general to calculate several observables on a quantum computer.

Design Methodologies for Integrated Quantum Frequency Processors

We report frequency-encoded quantum information offers intriguing opportunities for quantum communications and networking, with the quantum frequency processor paradigm—based on electro-optic phase modulators and Fourier-transform pulse shapers—providing a path for scalable construction of quantum gates. Yet all experimental demonstrations to date have relied on discrete fiber-optic components that occupy significant physical space and impart appreciable loss. In this article, we introduce a model for the design of quantum frequency processors comprising microring resonator-based pulse shapers and integrated phase modulators. We estimate the performance of single and parallel frequency-bin Hadamard gates, finding high fidelity values that extend to frequency bins with relatively wide bandwidths. By incorporating multi-order filter designs as well, we explore the limits of tight frequency spacings, a regime extremely difficult to obtain in bulk optics. Overall, our model is general, simple to use, and extendable to other material platforms, providing a much-needed design tool for future frequency processors in integrated photonics.

Damage growth in composite laminates with interleaves

The influence of placing interleaves between fiber reinforced plies in multilayered composite laminates is investigated. The geometry of the composite is idealized as two dimensional, isotropic, linearly elastic media made of a damaged layer bonded between two half planes and separated by thin interleaves of low extensional and shear moduli. The damage in the layer is taken in the form of a symmetric crack perpendicular to the interface and may extend up to the interface. The case of an H-shaped crack in the form of a broken layer with delamination along the interface is also analyzed. The interleaves are modeled as distributed shear and tension springs. Fourier integral transform techniques are used to develop solutions in terms of singular integral equations. An asymptotic analysis of the integral equations based on Muskhelishvili's techniques reveals logarithmically singular axial stresses in the half plane at the crack tips for the broken layer. For the H shaped crack, similar singularities are found to exist in the axial stresses at the interface crack tips in the layer and the half plane. The solution of the equations is found numerically for the stresses and displacements by using the Hadamard's concept of direct differentiation of Cauchy integrals as well as Gaussian integration techniques.

Postinstability Models in Dynamics

This paper is devoted to the concept of instability in dynamical systems with the main emphasis on orbital, Hadamard, and Reynolds instabilities. It demonstrates that the requirement about differentiability in dynamics in some cases is not consistent with the physical nature of motions, and may lead to unrealistic solutions. Special attention is paid to the fact that instability is not an invariant of motion: it depends upon frames of reference, the metric of configuration space, and classes of functions selected for mathematical models of physical phenomena. This leads to the possibility of elimination of certain types of instabilities (in particular, those which lead to chaos and turbulence) by enlarging the class of functions using the Reynolds-type transformation in combination with the stabilization principle: the additional terms (the so-called Reynolds stresses) are found from the conditions that they suppress the original instability. Based upon these ideas, a new approach to chaos and turbulence as well as a new mathematical formalism for nonlinear dynamics are discussed.
