Quasi-static magnetospheric MHD processes and the 'ground state' of the magnetosphere

The possible existence of a theoretically well-defined ground state of the earth's magnetosphere is discussed in the context of magnetic equilibrium and convection theories. The quasi-static MHD theory is reviewed and a two-dimensional model is used to show that the convecting magnetosphere can reach a steady state. It is suggested that, under the influence of convection, magnetic substorms occur periodically in the magnetosphere and are an integral part of the entire convection cycle. The concept of the ground state of the magnetosphere is examined. The term 'average magnetosphere', is proposed for defining a baseline configuration that corresponds to average solar wind conditions.

Crystal field splittings and magnetic ground state of the square-lattice antiferromagnets YbBi 2 ⁢ClO 4 and YbBi 2 ⁢IO 4 with J eff = $\frac{1}{2}$

Here, we report on the crystal field level splitting and magnetic ground state of the J eff = $\frac{1}{2}$ square lattice antiferromagnets YbBi 2 ⁢ClO 4 and YbBi 2 ⁢IO 4 using powder inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and neutron diffraction measurements. Both compounds exhibit a well-isolated Γ 7 doublet ground state under a tetragonal crystal field environment, confirming a robust J eff = $\frac{1}{2}$ picture with slight XY-type anisotropic character in the g-tensor. Notably, the ground state wave functions closely resemble the Γ 7 doublet expected in the perfect cubic limit, consistent with the nearly cubic ligand configuration of eight O 2- ions surrounding Yb 3+ . Below T N = 0.21 K, YbBi 2 ⁢IO 4 exhibits a stripe long-range magnetic order characterized by an ordering wave vector q m = (1/2, 0, 0) or its symmetry-equivalent (0, 1/2, 0), with magnetic moments aligned along q m . The ordered moment is approximately 79% of the classical prediction, significantly larger than expected from the isotropic J 1 -J 2 model, suggesting the possible involvement of exchange anisotropy in explaining this observation. We show that symmetry-allowed XXZ and bond-dependent anisotropic exchange terms in a square lattice can play a critical role in stabilizing the stripe order and suppressing the moment reduction as observed. These findings establish YbBi 2 ⁢ClO 4 and YbBi 2 ⁢IO 4 as unique platforms for exploring rich J eff = $\frac{1}{2}$ magnetism from two less investigated perspectives: (i) on a square lattice and (ii) within a (nearly) cubic ligand environment.

Is there a maser in the silicon monoxide ground state

Observations are reported of weak emission from the ground vibrational state of SiO in the Orion molecular cloud. It is shown that this emission has a rather smooth low-intensity profile extending over a large velocity range and is present at velocities where maser emissions from the first and second vibrational states are absent. Based on this difference, the present emission is interpreted as thermal emission in the ground state in regions where there is insufficient excitation to produce the vibrationally excited masers. Possible origins are considered for the Orion SiO maser, and it is noted that only VY CMa shows a profile that could be interpreted as ground-state maser emission.

Theoretical Electric Dipole Moments and Dissociation Energies for the Ground States of GaH-BrH

Reliable experimental diople moments are available for the ground states of SeH and BrH whereas no values have been reported for GaH and AsH a recently reported experimental dipole moment for GeH of 1.24 + or -0.01 D has been seriously questioned, and a much lower value of, 0.1 + or - 0.05 D, suggested. In this work, we report accurate theoretical dipole moments, dipole derivatives, dissociation energies, and spectroscopic constants (tau(sub e), omega(sub e)) for the ground states of GaH through BrH.

Ground state properties of solid and liquid spin-aligned atomic hydrogen

Calculations of the ground state energy in the solid phase were performed with the aid of a variational approach. The Morse potential form of the atomic triple potential computed by Kolos and Wolniewicz (1965) was employed for the calculations. The ground state energies of both the liquid and solid phases of spin-aligned atomic hydrogen around the volume of the transition are presented in a graph.

Raman Sideband Cooling of Molecules in an Optical Tweezer Array to the 3D Motional Ground State

Ultracold polar molecules are promising for quantum information processing and searches for physics beyond the standard model. Laser cooling to ultracold temperatures is an established technique for trapped diatomic and triatomic molecules. Further cooling of the molecules to near the motional ground state is crucial for reducing various dephasings in quantum and precision applications. In this work, we demonstrate Raman sideband cooling (RSC) of CaF molecules in optical tweezers to near their motional ground state, with average motional occupation quantum numbers of n ¯ x = 0.16 ( 12 ) , n ¯ y = 0.17 ( 17 ) (radial directions), and n ¯ z = 0.22 ( 16 ) (axial direction), and a 3-D motional-ground-state probability of 54 ± 18 % of the molecules that survive the RSC. This process paves the way to increase molecular coherence times in optical tweezers for robust quantum computation and simulation applications. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Ground state of Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 unraveled by hydrostatic pressure

Noncentrosymmetric Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 has attracted a lot of attention as a candidate for strongly correlated topological material, yet its experimental ground state remains a matter of contention. Two conflicting scenarios have emerged from a comparison to the prototypical Kondo insulator Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 : Either Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 is a spin-orbit-driven topological semimetal or a Kondo insulator with smaller Kondo coupling than its Pt counterpart. Here, we determine the ground state of Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 via electrical resistivity measurements under hydrostatic pressure, which is a clean symmetry-preserving tuning parameter that increases hybridization but virtually preserves spin-orbit coupling. Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 becomes more insulating under pressures up to 2.3 GPa, which is a signature of Ce-based Kondo insulating materials in the considered pressure range. Its small zero-pressure gap increases quadratically with pressure, similar to the behavior observed in the series Ce 3 Bi 4 (Pt 1 - x Pd x ) 3 , which indicates that Pt substitution and applied pressure have a similar effect. Finally, our result not only demonstrates that Kondo coupling, rather than spin-orbit coupling, is the main tuning parameter in this class of materials, but it also establishes that Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 has a narrow-gap Kondo insulating ground state.

Calculated ground state potential surface and excitation energies for the copper trimer

In the context of their relevance to catalysis and to materials science problems, transition metals and transition metal (TM) compounds are currently of considerable interest, and studies have been conducted of the copper trimer, Cu3. The present investigation is concerned with a study of the ground state surface and several groups of excited states in order to improve the understanding of the spectroscopy of Cu3. Differences of the current study from previous investigations are related to an employment of larger basis sets and a more extensive electron correlation. This was done with the objective to obtain a more accurate definition of the ground state surface. Features of the bonding in the copper dimer are considered to obtain a basis for an understanding of the copper trimer. Attention is given to calculational details, the ground state surface, and calculated vertical excitation energies. The results of SCF/SDCI calculations are reported for portions of the ground surface, for two groups of excited states, and for the ionization potential of Cu3.

Rapid Quantum Ground State Preparation via Dissipative Dynamics

Inspired by natural cooling processes, dissipation has become a promising approach for preparing low-energy states of quantum systems. However, the potential of dissipative protocols remains unclear beyond certain commuting Hamiltonians. This work provides significant analytical and numerical insights into the power of dissipation for preparing the ground state of noncommuting Hamiltonians. For quasi-free dissipative dynamics, including certain 1D spin systems with boundary dissipation, our results reveal a new connection between the mixing time in trace distance and the spectral properties of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, leading to an explicit and sharp bound on the mixing time that scales polynomially with system size. For more general spin systems, we develop a tensor network-based algorithm for constructing the Lindblad jump operator and for simulating the dynamics. Using this algorithm, we demonstrate numerically that dissipative ground state preparation protocols can achieve rapid mixing for certain 1D local Hamiltonians under bulk dissipation, with a mixing time that scales logarithmically with the system size. We then prove the rapid mixing result for certain weakly interacting spin and fermionic systems in arbitrary dimensions, extending recent results for high-temperature quantum Gibbs samplers to the zero-temperature regime. Together, these results show that dissipation can be a powerful tool for ground state preparation, with potential applications across condensed matter physics, quantum materials science, and beyond.

Unconventional polaronic ground state in superconducting LiTi 2 O 4

Geometrically frustrated lattices can display a range of correlated phenomena, ranging from spin frustration and charge order to dispersionless flat bands due to quantum interference. One particularly compelling family of such materials is the half-valence spinel LiB 2 O 4 materials. On the B-site frustrated pyrochlore sublattice, the interplay of correlated metallic behavior and charge frustration leads to a superconducting state in LiTi 2 O 4 and heavy fermion behavior in LiV 2 O 4 . To date, however, LiTi 2 O 4 has primarily been understood as a conventional BCS superconductor despite a lattice structure that could host more exotic ground states. Here, we present a multimodal investigation of LiTi 2 O 4 , combining ARPES, RIXS, proximate magnetic probes, and ab-initio many-body theoretical calculations. Our data reveals a novel mobile polaronic ground state with spectroscopic signatures that underlie co-dominant electron-phonon coupling and electron-electron correlations also found in the lightly doped cuprates. The cooperation between the two interaction scales distinguishes LiTi 2 O 4 from other superconducting titanates, suggesting an unconventional origin to superconductivity in LiTi 2 O 4 . Our work deepens our understanding of the rare interplay of electron-electron correlations and electron-phonon coupling in unconventional superconducting systems. In particular, our work identifies the geometrically frustrated, mixed-valence spinel family as an under-explored platform for discovering unconventional, correlated ground states.

Electronic ground state of two nonmagnetic pentavalent honeycomb iridates

Here, we investigate the electronic structure of two Ir 5+ honeycomb iridates, Sr 3 CaIr 2 O 9 and NaIrO 3 , by means of resonant x-ray techniques. We confirm that Sr 3 CaIr 2 O 9 realizes a large spin-orbit driven nonmagnetic J eff =0 singlet ground state despite sizable tetragonal distortions of Ir coordinating octahedra. However, the resonant inelastic x-ray spectra of NaIrO 3 are drastically different from expectations for a Mott insulator with octahedrally coordinated Ir 5+ . We find that the data for NaIrO 3 can be best interpreted as originating from a narrow gap nonmagnetic S=0 band insulating ground state. Our results highlight the complex role of the ligand environment in the electronic structure of honeycomb iridates and the essential role of x-ray spectroscopy to characterize electronic ground states of insulating materials.

Single-Determinant Ground State in Ce 4+ Imidophosphorane Complexes

X-ray spectroscopy techniques are critical in the electronic structure analysis of high-valent lanthanides. The interpretation of multipeaked features at the lanthanide L 3 -edge has remained a challenging question, as it is observed across a range of material classes. A series of structurally related Ce 4+ complexes were prepared to probe the potential ligand field perturbation of the ground state within the series. The tuning of relative 4f and ligand orbital energies in homoleptic and heteroleptic tetravalent Ce imidophosphorane complexes is achieved through ligand derivatization and is clearly demonstrated by UV−vis spectroscopy and electrochemically measured redox potentials. However, Ce L 3 - edge high-energy resolution fluorescence-detected (HERFD) X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra present features at consistent numbers and energies across the range of complexes. Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) is employed to visualize the observed features in the HERFD-XANES spectra. Large complete active space configuration interaction singles and doubles (CASCISD) calculations demonstrate that the ground-state wave function of all complexes can be described employing a single determinant. As a result, the multielectron feature at the L 3 -edge observed in this study for the Ce 4+ imidophosphorane complexes is described as excited-state multiconfigurational behavior that is independent of ligand variation, in systems where the ground state is described using the simple single determinant wave function.

Spatiotemporal quenches for efficient critical ground state preparation in the two-dimensional transverse field Ising model

Quantum simulators have the potential to shed light on the study of quantum many-body systems and materials, offering unique insights into various quantum phenomena. Although adiabatic evolution has been conventionally employed for state preparation, it faces challenges when the system evolves too quickly or the coherence time is limited. In such cases, shortcuts to adiabaticity, such as spatiotemporal quenches, provide a promising alternative. This paper numerically investigates the application of spatiotemporal quenches in the two-dimensional transverse field Ising model with ferromagnetic interactions, focusing on the emergence of the ground state and its correlation properties at criticality when the gap vanishes. We demonstrate the effectiveness of these quenches in rapidly preparing ground states in critical systems. Our simulations reveal the existence of an optimal quench front velocity at the emergent speed of light, leading to minimal excitation energy density and correlation lengths of the order of finite system sizes we can simulate. These findings emphasize the potential of spatiotemporal quenches for efficient ground state preparation in quantum systems, with implications for the exploration of strongly correlated phases and programmable quantum computing.

Ground-state β -decay spectroscopy of 187 Ta

We report beta-decay spectroscopy of the 187 Ta ground state was performed at the KEK Isotope Separation System. β-delayed γ rays corresponding to the previously reported in-beam transitions were observed. The β-decay half-life of the 187 Ta ground state was determined to be 283(10) s by analyzing a time spectrum of β-γ coincidence events. The β-decay branching ratio and log(ft) values were evaluated for the first time. Based on the newly evaluated log(ft) values of >6.0 and a decay scheme, spin-parity values of I π = 7/2 + originating from the odd-proton orbit π7/2[404] were assigned with high confidence, which is consistent with the systematics of neighboring odd-A nuclides.

Adiabatically controlled motional states of a CaO + and Ca + trapped-ion chain cooled to the ground state

Control of the external degree of freedom of trapped molecular ions is essential for their promising applications to spectroscopy, precision measurements of fundamental constants, and quantum information technology. Here, in this study, we demonstrate near ground-state cooling of the axial motional modes of a calcium mono-oxide ion via sympathetic sideband cooling with a cotrapped calcium ion. We also show that the phonon state of the axial out-of-phase mode of the ion chain is maintained while the mode frequency is adiabatically ramped up and/or down. The adiabatic ramping of the motional mode frequency is a prerequisite for searching for the proposed molecular dipole-phonon interaction.
