Performance Evaluation of Multi-Vendor Grid-Forming Inverters for Grid-Connected Operation Through Hardware Experimentation

This paper presents the functional performance evaluation tests of multiple (three) commercial grid-forming (GFM) inverters when they operate in parallel with the grid through hardware experiments. The goal of these tests is to explore and benchmark the GFM inverters' functionalities and dynamic response when they are operated in parallel with power grids. Both steady-state (changing the inverter's frequency and voltage droop) and transient (adding step changes to grid's frequency/voltage) tests are performed for each GFM inverter with the same testing circuit and testing protocol. The key findings are summarized as follows: 1) The GFM inverters can be dispatched through frequency and voltage droop intercepts to output the target power; and 1) the GFM inverters automatically respond to system frequency and voltage events to output the needed power; 3) all the GFM inviters shows stability issues when absorbing reactive power from the grid.

Dispatching Grid-Forming Inverters in Grid-Connected and Islanded Mode

This paper explores the dispatchability of grid-forming (GFM) inverters in grid-connected and islanded mode. An innovative concept of dispatching GFM sources (inverters and synchronous generators) is proposed to output the target power by adjusting their droop intercepts. The fundamental principle is that the GFM inverter's active and reactive power is dictated by its frequency and voltage, and thus dispatching the active and reactive power of a GFM inverter can be achieved through dispatching its frequency and voltage. The concept is validated with an example microgrid system with two GFM inverters, one diesel generator, one GFL inverter, and the load in both grid-connected and islanded mode. This pioneering work results in practical guidance for the development of energy management systems for future electric grids with GFM and GFL inverters. The key findings are summarized as follows: 1) The GFM inverters can be dispatched through frequency and voltage droop intercepts to output the target power; 2) The dispatch rule for grid-connected and islanded mode is slightly different.

A Novel Design for Switchable Grid-Following and Grid-Forming Control

This paper presents the design of a novel grid- forming (GFM) control structure adapted from a typical grid- following (GFL) control structure with minimal edits, thereby enabling a switchable control structure for voltage sourced converters (VSCs) to operate in either GFL or GFM mode by simply switching a flag manually. The VSC is shown to be able to operate in the GFL control mode synchronizing to the main grid through a phase-locked-loop (PLL) and operate as a GFM controller with power-based synchronization for both grid-connected and islanded conditions. To guarantee smooth operation, the control schemes and the mode switching logic have been carefully designed and examined via a series of experiments. Here, the experiment results show that the switchable control structure can fulfill the desired control and operation functions and enable smooth transition between control modes.

Direct Power Control of Back to Back Modular Multilevel Converter with Advanced Grid Support Functions for Grid Forming Application

Possibility of using back-to-back modular multilevel converter system with a direct power control architecture has been investigated in this paper. The rectifier side is controlled to be in grid following mode whereas the inverter side is controlled in grid forming mode. Both the sides’ local controllers use Lyapunov energy function based architecture to accomplish the objective of active and reactive power control as well as maintaining a fixed user defined voltage over the dc bus on the rectifier side. Therefore, the proposed direct power control architecture has embedded dc bus control architecture to maintain fixed user defined value of the capacitors. Similar architecture is implemented on the inverter side to accomplish either voltage control during grid forming or power control during grid following. Advanced grid support functionalities based on IEEE-1547-2018 is implemented and utilized to generate the reference values for either the rectifier or the inverter sides. The overall system is modeled based on MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS domain and various important case studies to verify the efficacy of the overall system has been presented.

Metrics for Evaluating Grid Service Provision from Communities of Grid-interactive and Efficient Buildings and other DER

Tapping into the flexibility of aggregations of Grid-interactive and Efficiency Buildings (GEBs) represent a large opportunity to cost-effectively improve operations in future low-carbon power grids. The US Department of Energy's Connected Communities program seeks to demonstrate collections of these GEBs at 10 different sites across the country. However, consistent metrics for evaluation across all projects are needed to build confidence in the approach. This paper presents the metrics relating to Grid Service Provision that will be computed at the 10 demonstrations. The metrics proposed quantity the magnitude of service offers, the consistency and quality of services provided by the community, and the individual DER contributions to the community-level service. The goal of this work is to present these metrics and describe some of their intended insights. The hope is that these insights will be useful and build confidence for grid operators, regulators, and aggregators and practitioners as they look to deploy these resources in grids of the future.

A Novel Resilience-Oriented Cellular Grid Formation Approach for Distribution Systems with Behind-the-Meter Distributed Energy Resources

This paper presents a resilience-oriented cellular grid formation approach to achieve scalable and reconfigurable community microgrid operations for distribution systems with behind-the-meter distributed energy resources. A set of interconnected solar photovoltaics, energy storage systems, and load is termed as a cell, implying a subset of the grid that can operate independently using its own resources. Cells are identified such that each cell inherently has sufficient energy resources to black start and can provide a certain level of backup power for its load under the loss of utility power supply. The proposed cell formation approach builds on a unique self-organizing map-based method (SomRes) to quantify a system's resilience. Using SomRes and a non-dominated sorting-based genetic algorithm (NSGA-II), a fast and efficient cell formation algorithm is developed to identify cells in a distribution system that are resilient against extreme events. The efficacy of the proposed approach is demonstrated on a numerical model of a real distribution feeder in Colorado, United States.

Synchronous Wind: Evaluating the Grid Impact of Inverterless Grid-Forming Wind Power Plants

Grid-forming (GFM) control of Type-3 and Type-4 wind turbine generators has attracted substantial attention in power systems research; however, the limited over-current capability of power electronics converters continues to deteriorate the grid strength of the evolving power systems. This paper develops the generic model of synchronous wind power generators, also known as Type-5 wind turbines, for power system integration studies. The Type-5 wind turbine interfaces with the electric grid through a synchronous generator; hence, its operation and consequent grid impacts are similar to a conventional power plant. Based on the developed model, a Type-5 wind power plant is integrated into the IEEE 14-bus test bed to evaluate its control and operation with a bulk power system. Finally, the stability properties of Type-5 wind turbine generators are compared with Type-3 wind turbines in GFM control mode through impedance characterization.

Large Angle Deviation in Grid-Following IBRs Upon Grid Voltage Dip

In the 2021 Texas Odessa large-scale solar PV tripping events, phase-locked-loop (PLL) loss of synchronism is identified as a major cause of solar PV tripping. When solar PVs detected a large phase angle deviation (e.g., 10 degrees), tripping commands were initiated. Here, the large phase angle deviation was triggered by a transmission line fault 200 miles away, which in turn led to approximately 30% voltage drop in the 345-kV system. This paper offers a plausible reason why grid-following inverter-based resources (IBRs) may experience a large angle deviation upon grid voltage dip. Critical operating conditions contributing to such phenomena are identified via analysis and their effects are demonstrated using electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation. Furthermore, the effect of converter control, e.g., grid-following control vs. grid-forming control, is examined. It is found from EMT simulation results that frequency and voltage control are helpful in mitigating angle deviation. Furthermore, linear block diagrams are derived to examine why frequency control can effectively suppress large angle deviation.

Introduction to Grid Forming Inverters: A Key to Transforming our Power Grid [Slides]

A grid-forming (GFM) inverter-based resource (IBR) controls maintain an internal voltage phasor that is constant or nearly constant in the sub-transient to transient time frame. This definition means that the GFM IBR will nearly immediately respond to changes in the external system and attempt to maintain IBR control during challenging network conditions to maintain grid stability. In GFM IBR, the voltage phasor is controlled to maintain synchronism with other devices in the grid while regulating the active and reactive power appropriately to support the grid. This contrasts with conventional GFL IBR controls wherein immediately after a disturbance (0-5 cycles), within the normal operating range of voltage, the output current phasor magnitude and angle remain unchanged, and the current phasor begins changing only within the transient time frame (tens of cycles) to strictly control the active and reactive power being injected into the network. This presentation gives an introduction to GFM IBR and presents the current state of the art in this area.

An Adaptive Virtual Oscillator Control Structure for Grid-Forming Inverters

The electrical grid is facing unprecedented challenges due to the increasing penetration of inverter-based resources. Grid forming inverters (GFMIs) are a promising technology to address these challenges. Recently, the virtual oscillator based GFMI control is attracting more attention due to its superior performance over other control strategies. In this article, an adaptive control strategy is proposed to provide flexible operation and transition between grid-connected and islanded modes. The controller adapts the virtual oscillator's parameter values depending on the operation mode. It also provides a feedback signal using a measured frequency to account for any steady-state errors and to allow a seamless transition from grid-connected to islanded mode. Finally, to show the feasibility of the proposed controller, this article discusses the simulation results from the implementation of the controller on a single inverter system and on a group of inverters on a large practical utility feeder, the IEEE 13 node feeder, using the DIgSILENT simulation environment.
