The National Criticality Experiments Research Center: Capability Expansion and Experiments in the Last Three Years

The National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) is a general purpose criticality experiments facility located inside the Device Assembly Facility (DAF) at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). Critical experiments containing any special nuclear material, any enrich ment/separation, most physical forms, and any configuration are possible within the constraints of the defined safety basis. NCERC draws upon physical assets and experimental knowledge to solve some of the most difficult problems with respect to criticality safety, reactor physics, and reactor kinetics. In terms of physical assets, NCERC houses hundreds of kilograms of special nuclear material with a majority consisting of highly enriched uranium (HEU) and weapons grade plutonium (WGPu). NCERC is home to four critical assembly machines: Comet, Planet, Flattop, and Godiva IV. To support various derivative diagnostics on fissioning systems, NCERC houses a count room to measure irradiated samples and dosimeters. This paper will step through each of these capabilities explaining recently completed work and upgrades.

Feasibility Study for a Subcritical Assembly at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory

A conceptual design has been completed for a new subcritical assembly at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). This subcritical assembly will support the Nuclear Criticality Safety Program (NCSP) training and education program to augment current subcritical assembly capabilities at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC). The proposed subcritical assembly uses legacy AGN-201M research reactor fuel plates that are available at the Y-12 National Security Complex. This subcritical assembly contains approximately 620 grams of 235 U as UO 2 particulates distributed homogeneously in radiation-stabilized polyethylene. The fuel plates will have a graphite neutron reflector to obtain a core multiplication, $M$, from 10 to 50, corresponding to a k eff of 0.9 to 0.95, respectively. The subcritical assembly will be able to support at least four experiments for the training courses: the addition of fissile material to increase neutron multiplication (mass), a core separation experiment (interaction), the effect of adding moderators to the core (moderation), and the effect of adding neutron absorbers to the core (poison/absorption). The proposed ORNL subcritical assembly will provide additional student bandwidth to support NCSP training courses and to provide for some backup capacity in the event that nuclear facility operations are disrupted at SNL or NCERC due to some unforeseen issue. The subcritical assembly will be designed to be an inherently safe subcritical assembly—subcritical under all normal and abnormal conditions—and it will provide the capability to conduct hands-on training to support NCSP and general nuclear criticality safety (NCS) staff training and qualification goals.

Criticality Accident Alarm System Shielding Benchmark: Integral Experiment Request 498, Critical Engineering Decision 2 Report

A workable design to perform a CAAS benchmark experiment is detailed herein. Key dimensions, materials, source intensity levels, and detectors are listed in this report. Sensitivity to 21 perturbations was determined to be acceptable. The next step will be for NCSP management to determine whether procurement should occur and if the experiment should proceed. The perturbation study suggests that the room return shield cavity radius and runout should be maintained to within a millimeter, the room return shield should be positioned carefully (perhaps with a laser range finder), and that the detectors should be mounted in a lightweight fixture such as aluminum, so their positioning is assured. Using a 3D scanner or photogrammetry to record part shapes may be beneficial. Further work is also needed to verify source reproducibility.

Investigating Fission Reaction Rate Ratio Sensitivities [Abstract]

Reaction rate ratios are a measurable parameter for reactor and criticality applications. A number of foil irradiations and fission chamber measurements have been performed for critical assemblies at Los Alamos National Laboratory starting in the 1950’s including (i) Godiva, a bare HEU spherical assembly; (ii) Flattop-25, a spherical assembly consisting of an HEU core and a natural uranium reflector; (iii) Jezebel, a bare 239 Pu assembly; and (iv) Flattop-Pu, a spherical assembly consisting of a 239Pu core and a natural uranium reflector. Fission ratio data for 238 U(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f), 237 Np(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f), 233 U(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f) and 239 Pu(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f) were obtained and reported. The EUCLID (Experiments Underpinned by Computational Learning for Improvements in nuclear Data) project at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) aims to constrain nuclear data by using a suite of measurement types beyond k-effective. Recent investigations include the use of pulsed spheres for nuclear data validation and other measurement methods of interest. One focus of the work is to determine if other methods are complimentary to the critical experiments utilized for nuclear data validation. It is anticipated the investigations will help inform methods that may be utilized in machine learning algorithms for nuclear validation. In order to use a measurement type for nuclear validation, it is necessary to obtain cross-section sensitivities for parameters. This work looks at reaction rate ratio sensitivities with SENSMG and Monte Carlo N-Particle R Code Version 6.21.

National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) Recent Measurements and Capabilities [Slides]

The National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) is operated by Los Alamos National Laboratory and has four critical assemblies (Including Godiva, which can be operated above prompt critical). Subcritical measurements are also performed. NCERC is the only general-purpose critical experiments facility in the US and is one of only a few that remain operational throughout the world.
