Automatic frequency control of voltage-controlled oscillators

Optical-capacitive coupling is used for isolation of control voltages, such as the high-voltage level of a klystron control electrode that is not referenced to ground, to serve as error voltages referenced to system ground so that the magnitude and sense of correction may be transferred.

Frequency Control of Multi-Pulse 2-micron Laser Transmitter for Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Measurement

Laser sources with highly stabilized emission wavelength is of paramount importance for a long term atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) measurement from a space platform. Integrated Path Differential Absorption (IPDA) lidar is a promising instrument for such a task. The design of a laser transmitter, with emphasis on the method used to control and select several wavelengths, is presented. This multi-pulsed, injection seeded, 2-μm transmitter uses a Ho:Tm:YLF laser crystal which has matching emission to the absorption of CO2 in the R30 spectroscopic area. The injection seeded laser produces triple single longitudinal mode transform limited line width pulses with a total of 80 mJ at a repetition rate of 50 Hz.

Model-free control for frequency response support in microgrids utilizing wind turbines

Islanded microgrids integrated with renewable energy resources bring additional challenges to the primary frequency control due to their power-electronic interfaced generations. Developing an efficient control strategy for inertia emulation and frequency response support of microgrids is becoming an important issue. Wind turbine dynamics, however, will degrade the emulated inertial and primary responses with most traditional control strategies. On the other hand, compensation methods often require the knowledge of system models at the design stage and state estimation for feedback once deployed online. To overcome these challenges, this paper explores a model-free control (MFC) strategy to emulate the desired inertia and support the frequency response of a diesel-wind microgrid system. Additionally, the proposed MFC strategy utilizes a model reference concept to obtain guaranteed inertial response and improve the frequency response of microgrids. This work considers different control strategies with different operating points. The proposed controller is implemented and verified using the modified 33-bus full nonlinear model of the three-phase diesel-wind system in Simulink. Simulation results demonstrate the improved frequency response by precisely emulating the desired inertia using the MFC strategy.

Improvement in the control aspect of laser frequency stabilization for SUNLITE project

Flight Electronics Division of Langley Research Center is developing a spaceflight experiment called the Stanford University and NASA Laser In-Space Technology (SUNLITE). The objective of the project is to explore the fundamental limits on frequency stability using an FM laser locking technique on a Nd:YAG non-planar ring (free-running linewidth of 5 KHz) oscillator in the vibration free, microgravity environment of space. Compact and automated actively stabilized terahertz laser oscillators will operate in space with an expected linewidth of less than 3 Hz. To implement and verify this experiment, NASA engineers have designed and built a state of the art, space qualified high speed data acquisition system for measuring the linewidth and stability limits of a laser oscillator. In order to achieve greater stability and better performance, an active frequency control scheme requiring the use of a feedback control loop has been applied. In the summer of 1991, the application of control theory in active frequency control as a frequency stabilization technique was investigated. The results and findings were presented in 1992 at the American Control Conference in Chicago, and have been published in Conference Proceedings. The main focus was to seek further improvement in the overall performance of the system by replacing the analogue controller by a digital algorithm.

Frequency Shaping Control for Weakly-Coupled Grid-Forming IBRs

Here, we consider the problem of controlling the frequency of low-inertia power systems via inverter-based resources (IBRs) that are weakly connected to the grid. We propose a novel grid-forming control strategy, the so-called frequency shaping control, that aims to shape the frequency response of synchronous generators (SGs) to load perturbations so as to efficiently arrest sudden frequency drops. Our solution relaxes several existing assumptions in the literature and is able to navigate trade-offs between peak power requirements and maximum frequency deviations. Finally, we analyze the robustness to imperfect knowledge of network parameters, while particularly highlighting the importance of accurate estimation of these parameters.

Controllers for Distributed Grid Support for Power Systems using Hybrid DER plants with Electrolyzers [SWR-20-06]

This software presents the design and control for a hybrid DER site with integrated dispatchable electrolyzers. It is a comprehensive solution for regulating the dispatch of electrolyzer demand to support the grid using the respective control functions. Multiple control functions (ramp control, frequency support control, dispatch prioritization) are developed to integrate the proposed site for multiple services around load, voltage and frequency control. This allows the site owners to participate in both distribution and bulk system energy markets for grid ancillary services.

Magnetic bearing stiffness control using frequency band filtering

Active magnetic bearings can be implemented with frequency band-reject filtering that decreases the bearing stiffness and damping at a small bandwidth around a chosen frequency. The control scheme was used for reducing a rotor dynamic force, such as an imbalance force, transmitted to the bearing stator. The scheme creates additional system vibration modes at the same frequency. It also shows that the amount of force reduction is limited by the stability requirement of these modes.

A machine learning-based fast frequency response control for a VSC-HVDC system

An HVDC system can realize a very fast frequency response to the disturbed system under a contingency because its active power control is decoupled from the frequency deviation. However, most of existing HVDC frequency control strategies are coupled with system primary frequency control and secondary frequency control. Since the traditional system frequency control is dominated by the thermal generators, the advantage of the fast response of the HVDC system is not made fully used. The development of a frequency response estimation based on a machine learning algorithm provides another approach to improve the frequency response capability of the HVDC system. Different from other frequency deviation tracking strategies, a machine learning based HVDC frequency response control can directly increase the power flow of a HVDC system by estimation of the system generator or load lost. In this paper, a fast frequency response control using a HVDC system for a large power system disturbance based on the multivariate random forest regression (MRFR) algorithm is proposed. The simulation is carried out with an integrated power system model based on the North American interconnections. The simulation results indicate that the proposed MRFR based frequency response control can significantly improve the frequency low point during an event, while stabilizing the frequency in advance.
