Agricultural resources investigations in northern Italy and southern France (Agreste Project)

The author has identified the following significant results. The vegetation structure of rice was investigated and interpreted in dynamic terms as a significant factor governing the distribution of solar energy thoughout the canopy and therefore conditions the final yield. Radiometric characteristics of rice culture were described for various stages of development in relation to the vegetation structure in an attempt to establish correlations between data of total biomass and of grain yield. Qualitative classification results were encouraging although the discrimination achieved was far from complete.

Agricultural resources investigations in northern Italy and southern France, Agreste project. Part 1: Activity performed on the Italian test sites

The author has identified the following significant results. It was found that the standard atmospheric correction procedure cannot be successfully applied to water targets if a better correlation of MSS data with radiance input to LANDSAT sensors was not reached. It was confirmed that the six line effect must be avoided unless more sophisticated data handling techniques allow subtraction of various amounts of path radiance for the six satellite detectors. The COPTRAN program for atmospheric corrections of scan angle influence on atmospheric path was modified and completed. Six rice varieties were discriminated in proportions ranging from 65 percent to more than 80 percent. The same techniques were applied to poplar groves with a 70 percent precision.

AGRESTE project: Agricultural resources investigations in northern Italy and southern France

The author has identified the following significant results. Recognition of rice varieties at the flowering stage by using airborne scanner data at low altitude (1500 m) seems to be feasible. The accuracies obtained on a reduced test area (3 sq km) range from 65% to 83%. Variations of a single cultural factor, such as nitrogen fertilization, induce variations of the total rice biomass at harvest, which can be correlated closely to the values of the reflectance ratio at earing. When grain production is correlated to total biomass, prediction of yield can be achieved based on reflectance data measured two months before harvest.

Exploration of the planets - An invited discourse presented before the Sixteenth General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union, Grenoble, France, August, 1976

The paper reviews in situ observations of Venus, Jupiter, and Mars by various spacecraft, including Mariner 2, 9, and 10, Pioneer 10 and 11, Venera 8, 9, and 10, and Viking. Detailed attention is given to the Viking mission, emphasizing adaptive aspects of the Viking spacecraft, landing sites, instruments, the geology of Mars, measurements of atmospheric constituents, the nature of rocks and sediment, and the biology experiments. It is noted that the organic-chemistry experiment has yielded entirely negative results, while two of the three microbiological experiments have yielded positive results. It is concluded that at the very least, a nonbiological chemistry on the Martian surface has been found which duplicates many of the essential steps in animal respiration and in green-plant photosynthesis.

The forecasting center of Meudon, France

Main features of solar activity are described in relation to solar and geophysical forecasting. Spectroheliograms, radio and X-ray data, white light coronal observations, particles data, photospheric images, and photospheric magnetic fields are among the types of data used to identify the active centers and flares of the Sun. Forecasting and identification of geomagnetic activity is also discussed. The forecasting technique is described along with the types of users.

Sea surface temperature of the coastal zones of France. Heat Capacity Mapping Mission (HCMM)

The author has identified the following significant results. HCMM data analysis shows some mesoscale features which were previously expected to occur: summer coastal upwellings in the Gulf of Lions, tidal fronts bordering the English Channel, and cooler surface waters at the continental shelf break. The analysis of the spectral variance density spectra show that the interpretation of the data usually is limited by the HCMM radiometric performance (noise levels) at wavenumbers below 5 km in the oceanic areas; from this analysis it may also be concluded that a decrease of the radiometric noise level down to 0.1 k against an increase of the ground resolution up to 2 km would give a better optimum of the radiometric performances in the oceanic areas. HCMM data appear to be useful for analysis of the sea surface temperature field, particularly in the very coastal area by profiting from the ground resolution of 500 m.

Spatial thermal radiometry contribution to the Massif armoricain and the Massif central (France) litho-structural study

The author has identified the following significant results. Although the limited number of images received did not permit construction of a thermal inertia map, important geological details were obtained in the areas of lithology and tectonics. Interpretation of day, night, and seasonal imagery resulted in differentiating broad calcareous and dolomitic units in the Causse Plateau. In the Massif amoricain, some granite massifs were delineated which were not observed by LANDSAT. Neotectonic faults were also revealed.

Two-Way Time Transfer via Geostationary Satellites NRC/NBS, NRC/USNO and NBS/USNO via Hermes and NRC/LPTF (France) via Symphonie

In most of the experiments, 1 pps pulses of the station atomic clocks were exchanged between the partners, and a cubic equation was fitted to the 1000 to 2000 second measurements. The equations were exchanged and substracted to obtain the time difference of the stations. The standard deviation in the fit of the equations varied, depending on conditions, from 1.5 ns to 16 ns. For the last month of the Hermes experiment, a 1 MHz signal was used, giving a standard deviation of 0.18 ns. The comparison of the time scales via satellite and via Loran-C (BIH Circular D) show clearly that some Loran-C links are very good, but that the NBS link varies by 1 micron s. Via the satellite the frequencies of the time scales can be compared with an accuracy of 2 x 10 to the minus 14 power.

Spatial thermal radiometry contribution to the Massif Armoricain and the Massif Central France litho-structural study

Thermal zones delimited on HCMM images, by visual interpretation only, were correlated with geological units and carbonated rocks, granitic, and volcanic rocks were individualized rock signature is evolutive parameter and some distinctions were made by addition of day, night and seasonal thermal image interpretation. This analysis also demonstrated that forest cover does not mask the underlying rocks thermal signature. Thermal linears are associated with known tectonics but the observed thermal variations from day to night and from one to another represent a promising concept to be studied in function of neotectonics and hydrogeology. The thermal anomalies discovered represent a potential interest which is to be evaluated. Significant results were obtained in the Mont Dore area and additional geological targets were defined in the Paris Basin and the Montmarault granite.

Sea surface temperature of the coastal zones of France

Thermal gradients in French coastal zones for the period of one year were mapped in order to enable a coherent study of certain oceanic features detectable by the variations in the sea surface temperature field and their evolution in time. The phenomena examined were mesoscale thermal features in the English Channel, the Bay of Biscay, and the northwestern Mediterranean; thermal gradients generated by French estuary systems; and diurnal heating in the sea surface layer. The investigation was based on Heat Capacity Mapping Mission imagery.

GSFC optical ozonesonde results during the Gap, France, intercomparisons, June 1981

O3 soundings made with balloon-borne optical sensors during the French Intercomparison Ozone Campaign in June, 1981, are reported. The GSFC four-channel UV-filter-photometer ozonesonde designed for the Super Loki rocket was attached to the gondola roof for redundant O3-density measurements at altitudes of 22-32 km, using the 300 and 303-nm filters. Sensor calibration, data processing, input constants, and vertical O3-distribution calculations are discussed. The density profiles for three legs of the flight, calculated using Bass or Vigroux cross sections, agreed within a standard error of 1.4 percent for each channel, but showed a consistent 4-5 percent (significant) difference between channels. Total average O3-column amounts determined by combining the GSFC data with ECC measurements for altitudes below 21 km were in good agreement with bias-corrected TOMS data from Nimbus-VII and with ground-based data from the Observatoire de Haute-Provence at Mt. Chiran, when the latter were computed using the pre-campaign calibration. A 9-percent discrepancy arose when the Chiran data were corrected for a post-campaign recalibration of the Dobson spectrophotometer.
