Fluctuations, Stratification and Stability in a Liquid Fluidized Bed at Low Reynolds Number

The sedimentation dynamics of extremely low polydispersity, non-colloidal, particles are studied in a liquid fluidized bed at low Reynolds number, Re much less than 1. When fluidized, the system reaches a steady state, defined where the local average volume fraction does not vary in time. In steady state, the velocity fluctuations and the particle concentrations are found to strongly depend on height. Using our results, we test a recently developed stability model for steady state sedimentation. The model describes the data well, and shows that in steady state there is a balancing of particle fluxes due to the fluctuations and the concentration gradient. Some results are also presented for the dependence of the concentration gradient in fluidized beds on particle size; the gradients become smaller as the particles become larger and fewer in number.

Process Model-Based Validation of the Intensification of Biomass Fast Pyrolysis in a Fluidized Bed via Autothermal Operation

A model for the fluidized-bed pyrolysis of biomass is extended to enable the simulation of intensified autothermal operation. In this system, partial oxidation of char and pyrolysate species replaces an external heat source to supply the enthalpy of pyrolysis, greatly increasing the throughput of a given fast pyrolysis reactor. Oxidation reactions are compiled from CRECK and other literature sources and extended to cover the species found in pyrolysis products, including a derivation of the catalytic effect of ash on char combustion from experimental studies at Iowa State University (ISU). Results indicate a roughly 3-fold increase in biomass throughput for a given reactor volume at the pilot scale with minimal loss of valuable products, in agreement with published data from the 3 × 10 -2 m 3 reactor operated by ISU. Additionally, a proposal for a 250 ton/day commercial-scale biomass pyrolysis reactor is analyzed, showing that the same size reactor operated by heating the fluidizing gas externally would have only one-tenth the capacity; if operated by heating the sand externally, the sand would need to circulate at an impractical 0.7 bed volume per minute rate to maintain a 250 ton/day biomass throughput.

Fluidized bed coal desulfurization

Laboratory scale experiments were conducted on two high volatile bituminous coals in a bench scale batch fluidized bed reactor. Chemical pretreatment and posttreatment of coals were tried as a means of enhancing desulfurization. Sequential chlorination and dechlorination cum hydrodesulfurization under modest conditions relative to the water slurry process were found to result in substantial sulfur reductions of about 80%. Sulfur forms as well as proximate and ultimate analyses of the processed coals are included. These studies indicate that a fluidized bed reactor process has considerable potential for being developed into a simple and economic process for coal desulfurization.

Scalable synthesis of supported catalysts using fluidized bed atomic layer deposition

Overcoating layers deposited on the surface of heterogeneous catalysts using atomic layer deposition (ALD) have been shown to increase catalyst activity, lifetime, and selectivity. In this study, we performed Al 2 O 3 ALD and Pd ALD in a commercial fluidized bed reactor on high surface area mesoporous powder supports to create overcoated catalysts with high precursor utilization. We investigated the reaction mechanism for both Al 2 O 3 ALD and Pd ALD using in situ mass spectrometry and developed a mathematical model to understand the precursor saturation behaviors. We characterized the catalyst samples using a variety of techniques to measure the surface area, porosity, composition, and surface chemistry of the overcoated catalysts. Finally, we used propane dehydrogenation as a probe reaction to evaluate the performance of the catalysts prepared by fluidized bed ALD.

Lewis Pressurized, Fluidized-Bed Combustion Program. Data and Calculated Results

A 200 kilowatt (thermal), pressurized, fluidized bed (PFB) reactor and research test facility were designed, constructed, and operated. The facility was established to assess and evaluate the effect of PFB hot gas effluent on aircraft turbine engine materials that may have applications in stationary powerplant turbogenerators. The facility was intended for research and development work and was designed to operate over a wide range of conditions. These conditions included the type and rate of consumption of fuel (e.g., coal) and sulfur reacting sorbent material: the ratio of feed fuel to sorbent material; the ratio of feed fuel to combustion airflow; the depth of the fluidized reaction bed; the temperature and pressure in the reaction bed; and the type of test unit that was exposed to the combustion exhaust gases.

Using Chemical Reactor Models to Predict Fluidized Bed Pyrolysis Yields of Biomass Feedstocks

A detailed biomass pyrolysis kinetics scheme is implemented in reduced-order reactor models to predict chemical species yields from a fluidized bed reactor. The biomass composition in terms of cellulose, hemicellulose, lignins, and extractives are determined for several biomass feedstocks. Model results are compared to yields measured from a two-inch diameter bench-scale fluidized bed reactor operating at fast pyrolysis conditions. The reduced-order chemical reactor models compare favorably with the experimental measurements and capture trends in product yields due to biomass compositional effects such as high ash content. This work offers a computationally inexpensive approach to predict the quality of biomass pyrolysis products in a timely manner. Source code for the reactor models along with a biomass composition web tool are made available online for future scientific research efforts.

Particle-wall heat transfer in narrow-channel bubbling fluidized beds for thermal energy storage

Robust metal oxide particles can provide low-cost and stable thermal energy storage (TES) to temperatures up to 1200 °C or higher. The transfer of heat into and out of the particles in cost-effective high-temperature particle heat exchangers remains a principal challenge to implementing particle-based TES. The present work expands on prior studies of particle-wall heat transfer in narrow-channel fluidized beds operated in the bubbling fluidization regime. Batch-mode experiments with various oxide particles over a range of temperatures and airflow rates indicate that particle-wall heat transfer increases with higher bed temperature and decreasing particle size. Measured particle-wall heat transfer coefficients in a 12 mm deep channel are fit to a Nusselt number correlation proportional to a non-monotonic function of excess fluidization velocity. Particle-wall heat transfer coefficients rise rapidly with excess fluidization velocities until reaching a maximum at intermediate air velocities due to a trade-off between enhanced transverse particle mixing and decreasing particle volume fraction with increased fluidization velocity. The heat transfer coefficient reaches a maximum of ≈ 400% of values without fluidization for oxide particles ranging in diameter d p from 159 to 408 μm. For the smallest particles tested, composed of olivine sand, particle-wall heat transfer coefficients peak above 1100 Wm –2 K –1 at 450 °C. 100-h tests at 500 °C and near-optimal heat transfer fluidization velocities indicated minimal wall wear or oxide scaling. Furthermore, high particle-wall heat transfer coefficients suggest narrow channel fluidized beds as a potential pathway for reducing the required surface area and cost of high-temperature particle heat exchangers, as needed in large-scale thermal energy storage applications.

Use of glow discharge in fluidized beds

Static charges and agglomerization of particles in a fluidized bed systems are minimized by maintaining in at least part of the bed a radio frequency glow discharge. This approach is eminently suitable for processes in which the conventional charge removing agents, i.e., moisture or conductive particle coatings, cannot be used. The technique is applied here to the disproportionation of calcium peroxide diperoxyhydrate to yield calcium superoxide, an exceptionally water and heat sensitive reaction.
