Photosynthesis of a Photocatalyst: Single Atom Platinum Captured and Stabilized by an Iron(III) Engineered Defect

Single atom (SA), noble metal catalysts are of interest due to high projected catalytic activity while minimizing cost. Common issues facing many synthesis methodologies include complicated processes, low yields of SA product, and production of mixtures of SA and nanoparticles (NPs). Herein we report a simple, room-temperature synthesis of single Pt-atom decorated, anatase Fe-doped TiO 2 particles that leverages the Fe dopant as an engineered defect site to photodeposit and stabilize atomically dispersed Pt. Both particle morphology and Fe dopant location are based on thermodynamic principles (Gibbs-Wulff construction). CO-DRIFTS (diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy) reveals absence of bridge-bonded CO signal, confirming atomically dispersed Pt. XAS (x-ray absorption spectroscopy) of both Pt and Fe indicates Fe-O-Pt bonding that persists through catalytic cycling. Mass balance indicates Pt loading on single particles is 2.5 wt% Pt; single Pt-atom decorated nanoparticle yield is 17%. Pt containing particles show more than an order-of-magnitude increased photo-oxidation efficiency relative to particles containing only Fe. High single-atom-Pt yield, ease of synthesis, and high catalytic activity demonstrate the utility and promise of this method. In conclusion, the principles of this photodeposition synthesis allow for its generalizability towards other SA metals of catalytic interest.

Photoluminescence and Raman mapping of β-Ga 2 O 3

Semi-insulating single crystal β-Ga 2 O 3 is becoming increasingly useful as a substrate for device fabrication. Fe doping is a method for producing such substrates. Along with Fe dopants, β-Ga 2 O 3 :Fe also contains Cr 3+ . Photoluminescence (PL) emission peaks at 690 nm (1.80 eV) and 696 nm (1.78 eV), as well as a broad feature around 709 nm (1.75 eV), are observed in β-Ga 2 O 3 :Fe. PL mapping of the 690 nm emission showed high and low intensity bands due to impurity striations introduced during crystal growth. PL mapping also revealed surface defects showing broad emissions around 983 nm (1.26 eV) and 886 nm (1.40 eV) that were spatially localized, occurring at discrete spots on the sample surface. Raman mapping of an 886 nm emission center revealed peaks at 2878 and 2930 cm -1 , consistent with an organometallic or hydrocarbon compound. Raman mapping of the 983 nm center showed a peak at 2892 cm -1 . Bright UV emission centers showed Raman peaks at 2910 and 2968 cm -1 , which are attributed to Si-CH 3 groups that may originate from silica polishing compounds or annealing in a silica ampoule.

Fe-single-atom catalyst nanocages linked by bacterial cellulose-derived carbon nanofiber aerogel for Li-S batteries

Li-S battery (LSB) is promising for achieving high capacity. Still, its development is hindered by the complex redox process with sluggish kinetics and particularly the resulting lithium polysulfides (LiPS) shuttle effects. Single-atom catalysts (SACs), with their maximized atom utilization, could effectively chemisorb soluble LiPSs and expedite the sulfide conversion reaction kinetics. Here we report incorporating Fe single metal atom catalyst (Fe-SAC) in the sulfur cathode design and its electrocatalytic effects. Fe-doped ZIF-8 nanocages were introduced into a cheap biomass bacteria cellulose. A pyrolysis process converted them into an aerogel structure with Fe-SAC-functionalized N-doped carbon nanocages linked by a carbon nanofiber network (FeSA-NC@CBC), which was applied as a scaffold to fabricate freestanding and binder-free sulfur cathodes. He we conducted electrochemical measurements to reveal Fe-SAC functions including lowering energy barriers for S 8 reduction to liquid-phase LiPSs and further to solid-phase Li 2 S 2 /Li 2 S and accelerating Li 2 S 2 /Li 2 S nucleation and deposition, as corroborated by our theoretical calculation results. Benefiting from the synergistic effects of highly active Fe-SAC and three-dimensional conductive network, the sulfide reaction kinetics is improved, which can diminish LiPS shuttle effects and therefore improve LBS rate performance and cycling stability. Accordingly, the fabricated FeSA-NC@CBC composite cathode delivers an excellent rate capability at 2C with a reversible capacity of 840 mAh/g and a long-term cyclic stability of 800 mAh/g at 1C after 500 cycles.

Simultaneous Development of Antiferromagnetism and Local Symmetry Breaking in a Kagome Magnet (Co 0.45 Fe 0.55 )Sn

CoSn and FeSn, two kagome-lattice metals, have recently attracted significant attention as hosts of electronic flat bands and emergent physical properties. However, current understandings of their physical properties are limited to knowledge of the average crystal structure. Here, we report the Fe-doping induced coemergence of the antiferromagentic (AFM) order and local symmetry breaking in (Co 0.45 Fe 0.55 )Sn. Rietveld analysis on the neutron and synchrotron X-ray diffraction data indicates A-type antiferromagnetic order with the moment pointing perpendicular to the kagome layers, associated with the anomaly in the MSn(1) 2 Sn(2) 4 (M = Co/Fe) octahedral distortion and the lattice constant c. Reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) modeling of the synchrotron X-ray total scattering results captured the subtle local orthorhombic distortion involving off-axis displacements of Sn(2). Our results indicate that the stable hexagonal lattice above T N becomes unstable once the A-type AFM order is formed below T N . Here we argue that the local symmetry breaking has a magnetic origin, since the spatially varied M–Sn(2) bond lengths arise from out-of-plane magnetic exchange coupling J c via the exchange pathway M–Sn(2)–M. Our study provides comprehensive information on the crystal structure in both long-range scale and local scale, unveiling unique coupling between AFM order, octahedral distortion, and hidden local symmetry breaking.

Enhancing the electron mobility in Si-doped (010) β-Ga 2 O 3 films with low-temperature buffer layers

We demonstrate a new substrate cleaning and buffer growth scheme in β-Ga 2 O 3 epitaxial thin films using metal–organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE). For the channel structure, a low-temperature (LT, 600 °C) un-doped Ga 2 O 3 buffer was grown, followed by a transition layer to a high-temperature (HT, 810 °C) Si-doped Ga 2 O 3 channel layers without growth interruption. The (010) Ga 2 O 3 Fe-doped substrate cleaning uses solvent cleaning, followed by additional hydrofluoric acid (49% in water) treatment for 30 min before the epilayer growth. This step is shown to compensate the parasitic Si channel at the epilayer–substrate interface that originates from the substrate polishing process or contamination from the ambient. From secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) analysis, the Si peak atomic density at the substrate interface is found to be several times lower than the Fe atomic density in the substrate—indicating full compensation. The elimination of the parasitic electron channel at the epi–substrate interface was also verified by electrical (capacitance–voltage profiling) measurements. In the LT-grown (600 °C) buffer layers, it is seen that the Fe forward decay tail from the substrate is very sharp, with a decay rate of ∼9 nm/dec. X-ray off-axis rocking curve ω-scans show very narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM) values, similar to the as-received substrates. These channels show record high electron mobility in the range of 196–85 cm 2 /V⋅s in unintentionally doped and Si-doped films in the doping range of 2 × 10 16 –1 × 10 20 cm −3 . Si delta-doped channels were also grown utilizing this substrate cleaning and the hybrid LT buffers. Record high electron Hall mobility of 110 cm 2 /V⋅s was measured for sheet charge density of 9.2 × 10 12 cm −2 . This substrate cleaning, combined with the LT buffer scheme, shows the potential of designing Si-doped β-Ga 2 O 3 channels with exceptional transport properties for high-performance Ga 2 O 3 -based electron devices.

Modular Iron–Bipyridine-Based Conjugated Aerogels as Catalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Aerogels have a large surface area and a porous structure, which make them an attractive catalyst support materials for fuel cells. Modifying the aerogels’ building blocks and introducing catalytic sites into their backbones allow them to function as both catalysts and supports, thereby increasing the density and distribution of catalyst active sites. In this work, we studied conjugated aerogels containing iron–bipyridine catalytic sites for the oxygen reduction reaction. To demonstrate the variation in physical and electrochemical properties of these aerogels, a series of aerogels were synthesized by a Glaser coupling reaction. Iron salt was added to the three-dimensional gel to produce iron–bipyridine complexes and obtain atomically dispersed catalytic sites. The electrocatalytic activity and electrical conductivity of the aerogels were increased after their heat treatment to yield Fe-doped carbon aerogels. The control of metal loadings was accomplished by changing the bipyridine content during the aerogel synthesis, resulting in 0.9–4.1 wt % Fe. In conclusion, the results show a correlation between Fe loading, aerogel structure, and catalytic activity, achieving high performance for the oxygen reduction reaction in both acidic and alkaline media.

Single-Atom Nanozymes Linked Immunosorbent Assay for Sensitive Detection of A β 1-40: A Biomarker of Alzheimer’s Disease

Single-atom nanozymes (SANs) possess unique features of maximum atomic utilization and present highly assembled enzyme-like structure and remarkable enzyme-like activity. By introducing SANs into immunoassay, limitations of ELISA such as low stability of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) can be well addressed, thereby improving the performance of the immunoassays. In this work, we have developed novel Fe-N-C single-atom nanozymes (Fe-N x SANs) derived from Fe-doped polypyrrole (PPy) nanotube and substituted the enzymes in ELISA kit for enhancing the detection sensitivity of amyloid beta 1-40. Results indicate that the Fe-N x SANs contain high density of single-atom active sites and comparable enzyme-like properties as HRP, owing to the maximized utilization of Fe atoms and their abundant active sites, which could mimic natural metalloproteases structures. Further designed SAN-linked immunosorbent assay (SAN-LISA) demonstrates the ultralow limit of detection (LOD) of 0.88 pg/mL, much more sensitive than that of commercial ELISA (9.98 pg/mL). The results confirm that the Fe-N x SANs can serve as a satisfactory replacement of enzyme labels, which show great potential as an ultrasensitive colorimetric immunoassay.

Cu-Doped Iron Oxide for the Efficient Electrocatalytic Nitrate Reduction Reaction

The electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) is a promising alternative synthetic route for sustainable ammonia (NH 3 ) production, because it not only eliminates nitrate (NO 3 – ) from water but also produces NH 3 under mild operating conditions. However, owing to the complicated eight-electron reaction and the competition from the hydrogen evolution reaction, developing catalysts with high activities and Faradaic efficiencies (FEs) is highly imperative to improve the reaction performance. In this study, Cu-doped Fe 3 O 4 flakes are fabricated and demonstrated to be excellent catalysts for electrochemical conversion of NO 3 – to NH 3 , with a maximum FE of ~100% and an NH 3 yield of 179.55 ± 16.37 mg h –1 mg cat –1 at –0.6 V vs RHE. Here, theoretical calculations reveal that doping the catalyst surface with Cu results in a more thermodynamically facile reaction. These results highlight the feasibility of promoting the NO 3 RR activity using heteroatom doping strategies.

Magnetic cations doped into a double perovskite semiconductor

Here we report two solid solutions based on the magnetic ion doping of the double perovskite oxide Sr 2 GaSbO 6 : Sr 2 Ga 1-x Cr x SbO 6 (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.4) and Sr 2 Ga 1-x Fe x SbO 6 (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.4). All compositions crystallize in the same space group ($I4/m$) as their undoped parent phase Sr 2 GaSbO 6 , with the trivalent magnetic cations Cr 3+ or Fe 3+ partially substituting for non-magnetic Ga 3+ in one of the B-cation sites. The Cr- and Fe-doped phases display dominant antiferromagnetic coupling among the dopant magnetic moments, and exhibit decreasing band gaps with increasing substitution level.

Correlation between antiferromagnetic and Mott states in spin orbit coupled Sr 2 Ir O 4 : A study of Sr 2 Ir 1 – x M x O 4 ( M = Fe or Co)

Sr 2 IrO 4 is an archetypal spin-orbit-coupled Mott insulator with an antiferromagnetic state below 240 K. Here we report results of our study on single crystals of Sr 2 Ir 1–x Fe x O 4 (0 ≤ x < 0.32) and Sr 2 Ir 1–x Co x O 4 (0 ≤ x < 0.22). Fe doping retains the antiferromagnetic state but simultaneously precipitates an emergent metallic state whereas Co doping causes a rapid collapse of both the antiferromagnetic and Mott states, giving rise to a confined metallic state featuring a pronounced linearity of the basal-plane resistivity up to 700 K. The results indicate tetravalent Fe 4+ (3d 4 ) ions in the intermediate spin state with S = 1 and Co 4+ (3d 5 ) ions in the high spin state with S = 5/2 substituting for Ir 4+ (5d 5 ) ions in Sr 2 IrO 4 , respectively. The effective magnetic moment closely tracks the Néel temperature as doping increases, suggesting that the spin state of the dopant predominately determines the magnetic properties in doped Sr 2 IrO 4 . Furthermore, all relevant properties including charge-carrier density (e.g., 10 28 /m 3 ), Sommerfeld coefficient (e.g., 19 mJ / mole K 2 ), and Wilson ratio (e.g., 2.6) consistently demonstrate an emergent metallic state that is both robust and highly correlated in the two systems, arising from the percolation of bound states and the weakening of structural distortions. Furthermore, this study strongly indicates that the antiferromagnetic and Mott states are correlated in an unconventional manner in Sr 2 IrO 4 .

Iridium-related complexes in Czochralski-grown β-Ga 2 O 3

Gallium oxide is a promising semiconductor for its potential as a material in the field of power electronics. The effects of iridium impurities on undoped, Mg-doped, and Ca-doped gallium oxides were investigated with IR spectroscopy. In undoped and Ca-doped β-Ga 2 O 3 , IR peaks at 3313, 3450, and 3500 cm -1 are tentatively assigned to O–H bond-stretching modes of IrH complexes. Mg-, Ca-, and Fe-doped samples show an Ir 4+ electronic transition feature at 5148 cm -1 . By measuring the strength of this feature vs photoexcitation, the Ir 3+/4+ donor level was determined to lie 2.2–2.3 eV below the conduction band minimum. Ga 2 O 3 :Mg also has a range of sidebands between 5100 and 5200 cm -1 , attributed to IrMg pairs. Polarized IR measurements show that the 5248 cm -1 peak is anisotropic, weakest for light polarized along the c axis, consistent with Lenyk et al. [J. Appl. Phys. 125, 045703 (2019)].

Room-temperature skyrmion lattice in a layered magnet (Fe 0.5 Co 0.5 ) 5 GeTe 2

Novel magnetic ground states have been stabilized in two-dimensional (2D) magnets such as skyrmions, with the potential next-generation information technology. Here, we report the experimental observation of a Néel-type skyrmion lattice at room temperature in a single-phase, layered 2D magnet, specifically a 50% Co-doped Fe 5 GeTe 2 (FCGT) system. The thickness-dependent magnetic domain size follows Kittel's law. The static spin textures and spin dynamics in FCGT nanoflakes were studied by Lorentz electron microscopy, variable-temperature magnetic force microscopy, micromagnetic simulations, and magnetotransport measurements. Current-induced skyrmion lattice motion was observed at room temperature, with a threshold current density, j th = 1 × 10 6 A/cm 2 . This discovery of a skyrmion lattice at room temperature in a noncentrosymmetric material opens the way for layered device applications and provides an ideal platform for studies of topological and quantum effects in 2D.

Discovery of a new phase transition and high-valent redox mechanism in Fe-substituted Na 2 Mn 3 O 7

Sodium-ion batteries are a promising lower-cost alternative to lithium-ion batteries, but further improvements in electrochemical performance are required. One strategy to increase capacity is to enable reversible high-valent cationic and anionic redox in layered cathode materials; however, this is typically accompanied by structural degradation. Here, in this study, we elucidate the mechanism by which Fe-doped Na 2 Mn 3 O 7 , featuring ordered transition metal-vacancies, achieves reversible high-valent redox. Using Mössbauer spectroscopy, soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and in-situ hard XAS, we demonstrate reversible high-valent cationic redox involving both Fe and Mn while in-situ Raman confirms the absence of local structural degradation associated with oxygen redox. Combining in-situ X-ray diffraction with theoretical calculations, we further identify a previously unreported global phase transition from the $\bar{P1}$ to the $P2_1/c$ space group during electrochemical cycling and develop a physical model describing this structural evolution. These results provide insights for structurally stable layered sodium transition metal oxide cathodes with reversible high-valent redox.
