Micromechanisms of thermomechanical fatigue: A comparison with isothermal fatigue

Thermomechanical Fatigue (TMF) experiments were conducted on Mar-M 200, B-1900, and PWA-1480 (single crystals) over temperature ranges representative of gas turbine airfoil environments. The results were examined from both a phenomenological basis and a micromechanical basis. Depending on constituents present in the superalloy system, certain micromechanisms dominated the crack initiation process and significantly influenced the TMF lives as well as sensitivity of the material to the type TMF cycle imposed. For instance, high temperature cracking around grain boundary carbides in Mar-M 200 resulted in short in-phase TMF lives compared to either out-of-phase or isothermal lives. In single crystal PWA-1480, the type of coating applied was seen to be the controlling factor in determining sensitivity to the type of TMF cycle imposed. Micromechanisms of deformation were observed over the temperature range of interest to the TMF cycles, and provided some insight as to the differences between TMF damage mechanisms and isothermal damage mechanisms. Finally, the applicability of various life prediction models to TMF results was reviewed. Current life prediction models based on isothermal data must be modified before being generally applied to TMF.

Cyclic deformation, fatigue and fatigue crack propagation in Ni-base alloys

Ni-base superalloys' cumulative glide behavior, damage accumulation, low-cycle fatigue, and crack propagation characteristics are directly dependent on deformation behavior which is in turn a strong function of microstructural characteristics. Microstructural instabilities and environmental interactions become additional factors at elevated temperatures. An account is presently given of microstructural, chemical, and processing techniques that may be used to obtain the properties that appear most critical or desirable in specific applications.

Computational simulation of probabilistic lifetime strength for aerospace materials subjected to high temperature, mechanical fatigue, creep, and thermal fatigue

The results of a fourth year effort of a research program conducted for NASA-LeRC by The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) are presented. The research included on-going development of methodology that provides probabilistic lifetime strength of aerospace materials via computational simulation. A probabilistic material strength degradation model, in the form of a randomized multifactor interaction equation, is postulated for strength degradation of structural components of aerospace propulsion systems subjected to a number of effects or primitive variables. These primitive variables may include high temperature, fatigue, or creep. In most cases, strength is reduced as a result of the action of a variable. This multifactor interaction strength degradation equation was randomized and is included in the computer program, PROMISC. Also included in the research is the development of methodology to calibrate the above-described constitutive equation using actual experimental materials data together with regression analysis of that data, thereby predicting values for the empirical material constants for each effect or primitive variable. This regression methodology is included in the computer program, PROMISC. Actual experimental materials data were obtained from industry and the open literature for materials typically for applications in aerospace propulsion system components. Material data for Inconel 718 was analyzed using the developed methodology.

Machining of Wrought Alloy 316L Specimens to Evaluate Elevated-Temperature Fatigue and Creep-Fatigue Properties

At the 2019 GAIN Microreactors workshop, a need to fabricate microreactor components through advanced manufacturing (AM) was conveyed by microreactor developers. Powder metallurgy (PM) hot isostatic pressing (HIP) is more mature than other AM techniques and thus more readily deployable in the near term. The elevated-temperature cyclic properties of materials manufactured by PM HIP, however, have not been established. Work is currently in progress to evaluate the elevated-temperature cyclic properties of Alloy 316L manufactured by PM HIP. These properties need to be compared to those of wrought Alloy 316L in order to understand the effect of PM HIP. Therefore, wrought Alloy 316L testing at the same conditions as those tested for the PM HIP is necessary. This statement of work provides instructions and requirements for the machining of wrought Alloy 316L specimens.

Fatigue and Fatigue Countermeasures

Sleep can play an important role in alleviating health disparities, as inadequate sleep is associated with serious, adverse health conditions including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer, and premature mortality. Nonetheless, dissemination of sleep health interventions targeted towards health disparities populations remains limited. Social workers and social work students serve populations designated as health disparities populations and are in an optimal position to promote sleep health among their underserved clients. However, social work students lack the specific training and resources necessary to promote healthy sleep practices among their clients. In fact, bachelors, master's, and doctoral social work programs in the United States do not incorporate any sleep health training as part of their curriculum. To improve public health through the promotion of healthy sleep practices among underserved populations, we propose to equip social work students, through an online learning module, with the knowledge and resources necessary to promote healthy sleep practices among their clients in underserved communities. In order to maximize effectiveness and reach, this proposal employs: (1) a collaborative team of sleep medicine and social work professionals; and (2) an ideal university environment with sophisticated eLearning capabilities that has one of the largest social work programs in the state of Florida.
