The Radar Image Generation (RIG) model

RIG is a modeling system which creates synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and inverse SAR images from 3-D faceted data bases. RIG is based on a physical optics model and includes the effects of multiple reflections. Both conducting and dielectric surfaces can be modeled; each surface is labeled with a material code which is an index into a data base of electromagnetic properties. The inputs to the program include the radar processing parameters, the target orientation, the sensor velocity, and (for inverse SAR) the target angle rates. The current version of RIG can be run on any workstation, however, it is not a real-time model. We are considering several approaches to enable the program to generate realtime radar imagery. In addition to its image generation function, RIG can also generate radar cross-section (RCS) plots as well as range and doppler radar return profiles.

Stratway: A Modular Approach to Strategic Conflict Resolution

In this paper we introduce Stratway, a modular approach to finding long-term strategic resolutions to conflicts between aircraft. The modular approach provides both advantages and disadvantages. Our primary concern is to investigate the implications on the verification of safety-critical properties of a strategic resolution algorithm. By partitioning the problem into verifiable modules much stronger verification claims can be established. Since strategic resolution involves searching for solutions over an enormous state space, Stratway, like most similar algorithms, searches these spaces by applying heuristics, which present especially difficult verification challenges. An advantage of a modular approach is that it makes a clear distinction between the resolution function and the trajectory generation function. This allows the resolution computation to be independent of any particular vehicle. The Stratway algorithm was developed in both Java and C++ and is available through a open source license. Additionally there is a visualization application that is helpful when analyzing and quickly creating conflict scenarios.

Substructuring techniques

The substructure function generator program is discussed. Input to this program consists of a definition of a finite element model of a substructure, and specification of the type and number of displacement functions to be generated. Primary output is a substructure data file containing the substructure mass and stiffness matrices expressing kinetic and potential energies as quadratic forms in coefficients of the displacement functions, etc. The substructure synthesis program forms complete system mass, stiffness, and damping matrices, computes system modes and frequencies, and executes transient response calculations. Input to this program consists of the array of substructure data files generated by the function generator program for individual substructures, and data cards defining the position and interconnection of the substructures, damping data, forcing function details, and function control parameters.

Heat Analysis Manager (HAM), a Thermal Desktop API Based Heat Map Generation Software

Thermal engineers often create custom heat maps to analyze their thermal model. However, generating a heat map is difficult because thermal simulation only readily provide attributes of simulated nodes such as temperature, capacitance, heat generation, and a network of conductances. Heat flow values are a derived quantity from the nodal attributes, and the data processing and management of heat flow between nodes quickly become difficult for large models. Deriving a network of heat flow values requires vast amount of calculations and data handling, heat map generation process generally suffers from processing speed, loss of accuracy, and/or presentation of data in a useful format. Heat Analysis Manager (HAM) is a Thermal Desktop (TD) based free multi-purpose tool developed to aid thermal engineers in analyzing their thermal model, including a heat map generation functionality. HAM’s heat map generator retains accuracy and fast processing speed by utilizing TD’s application programming interface (API) and built-in TD’s “Qflow from Results.” Furthermore, HAM’s heat map output is presented in an easily customizable format in Excel, allowing users to create various custom visual heat maps. A full description of how HAM utilizes TD’s API to create a customizable heat map is provided. A simple model demonstration is included along with step-by-step procedures on creating custom heat maps. HAM’s heat map result has been verified against TD’s and other heat map generation software, and verification methods are also included.

Assessing Tactical Scheduling Options for Time-Based Surface Metering

This paper presents a parametric analysis of the most recent tactical scheduler design for NASA’s Airspace Technology Demonstration 2 (ATD-2) sub-project, committed to demonstrating time-based surface metering at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT). The tactical scheduler design is implemented in a fast-time simulation model of CLT using NASA’s Surface Operations Simulator and Scheduler. The tactical scheduler is supported by three basic functions: trajectory prediction, runway scheduling, and advisory generation. A key parameter of the advisory generation function is the taxi time delay buffer used when calculating target gate pushback times from runway schedule. Multiple simulations that varied the amount of taxi time delay buffer were analyzed to determine the effect on tactical scheduler performance. The results show an improvement in tactical scheduler performance when the buffer is made sufficiently large to release departures from their gates early enough to maintain scheduler predicted runway throughput.

Application of genetic algorithms to tuning fuzzy control systems

Real number genetic algorithms (GA) were applied for tuning fuzzy membership functions of three controller applications. The first application is our 'Fuzzy Pong' demonstration, a controller that controls a very responsive system. The performance of the automatically tuned membership functions exceeded that of manually tuned membership functions both when the algorithm started with randomly generated functions and with the best manually-tuned functions. The second GA tunes input membership functions to achieve a specified control surface. The third application is a practical one, a motor controller for a printed circuit manufacturing system. The GA alters the positions and overlaps of the membership functions to accomplish the tuning. The applications, the real number GA approach, the fitness function and population parameters, and the performance improvements achieved are discussed. Directions for further research in tuning input and output membership functions and in tuning fuzzy rules are described.

Response Surface Modeling Using Multivariate Orthogonal Functions

A nonlinear modeling technique was used to characterize response surfaces for non-dimensional longitudinal aerodynamic force and moment coefficients, based on wind tunnel data from a commercial jet transport model. Data were collected using two experimental procedures - one based on modem design of experiments (MDOE), and one using a classical one factor at a time (OFAT) approach. The nonlinear modeling technique used multivariate orthogonal functions generated from the independent variable data as modeling functions in a least squares context to characterize the response surfaces. Model terms were selected automatically using a prediction error metric. Prediction error bounds computed from the modeling data alone were found to be- a good measure of actual prediction error for prediction points within the inference space. Root-mean-square model fit error and prediction error were less than 4 percent of the mean response value in all cases. Efficacy and prediction performance of the response surface models identified from both MDOE and OFAT experiments were investigated.

Analytic and approximate boundary-fitted coordinate systems for fluid flow simulation

A method for constructing a direct functional relation between the computational and physical domains such that boundaries in the computational domain map into boundaries in the physical domain is presented. This method which is called the 'two-boundary technique' is based on generating functions that represent two disconnected boundaries in the physical domain and an independent function which connects one boundary with another to generate grids. The suggested connecting functions are simple linear and cubic parametric polynomials with parameters based on position and derivatives at the disconnected boundaries. The boundaries can be defined by analytical, approximate, and tension spline functions; the grid density in specified regions is controlled by embedding contraction functions in either the boundary representation or the connecting function.

DiMER

SAND2025-04145O DiMER is a Python based tool that helps researchers understand the functions of genes by searching through multiple biological databases. It takes user-provided data and scans various databases to find the best matches for gene functions, generating a clear summary of results. DiMER identifies the most relevant functional annotations and improves upon previous annotations by replacing instances of "unknown protein function" with more accurate descriptions. DiMER requires minimal setup. Sandia National Laboratories is a multimission laboratory managed and operated by National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Inc., for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-NA0003525.

Theoretical investigation of gas-surface interactions

A Dirac-Hartree-Fock code was developed for polyatomic molecules. The program uses integrals over symmetry-adapted real spherical harmonic Gaussian basis functions generated by a modification of the MOLECULE integrals program. A single Gaussian function is used for the nuclear charge distribution, to ensure proper boundary conditions at the nuclei. The Gaussian primitive functions are chosen to satisfy the kinetic balance condition. However, contracted functions which do not necessarily satisfy this condition may be used. The Fock matrix is constructed in the scalar basis and transformed to a jj-coupled 2-spinor basis before diagonalization. The program was tested against numerical results for atoms with a Gaussian nucleus and diatomic molecules with point nuclei. The energies converge on the numerical values as the basis set size is increased. Full use of molecular symmetry (restricted to D sub 2h and subgroups) is yet to be implemented.

A method of isolating treadmill shock and vibration on spacecraft

A major problem is currently felt to exist in the implementation of materials processing on a spacecraft. Crystal growers place requirements of one micro-g or less on the vehicle. Simple math produces startling figures for such a restriction e.g., for each ton of vehicle mass with 10(-6) g acceleration limit; Perturbing Force limit, F = .002 lb. For each 10(5) lbs F = 0.1 lb. For each 10(6) lbs F = 1.0 lb. Forces generated by normal human movement on spacecraft of 5x10(5) pounds weight are on an order-of-magnitude greater than allowed by this specification and forces generated by locomotion on a treadmill are more than two orders-of-magnitude greater. Other exercises and normal onboard functions generate forces in between. To accommodate many essential functions it is obvious that even on a vehicle as large as Space Station, a reduction of more than two orders of magnitude in force is required. Commonly used passive shock and vibration isolation devices are complex, heavy, and also would have difficulty meeting the requirements. However, by a new arrangement, adequate isolation can be obtained. Isolation of the treadmill will be treated since it is considered the most significant disturbance at this time.

Global Nonlinear Parametric Modeling with Application to F-16 Aerodynamics

A global nonlinear parametric modeling technique is described and demonstrated. The technique uses multivariate orthogonal modeling functions generated from the data to determine nonlinear model structure, then expands each retained modeling function into an ordinary multivariate polynomial. The final model form is a finite multivariate power series expansion for the dependent variable in terms of the independent variables. Partial derivatives of the identified models can be used to assemble globally valid linear parameter varying models. The technique is demonstrated by identifying global nonlinear parametric models for nondimensional aerodynamic force and moment coefficients from a subsonic wind tunnel database for the F-16 fighter aircraft. Results show less than 10% difference between wind tunnel aerodynamic data and the nonlinear parameterized model for a simulated doublet maneuver at moderate angle of attack. Analysis indicated that the global nonlinear parametric models adequately captured the multivariate nonlinear aerodynamic functional dependence.
