Quantitative photoabsorption and fluorescence spectroscopy of H2S and D2S at 49-240 nm

Photoabsorption and fluorescence cross sections of H2S and D2S were measured in the 49-240 nm region using synchrotron radiation as a light source. Fluorescence from photoexcitation of H2S appears at 49-97 nm, but not in the long wavelength region. Fluorescence spectra were dispersed, and used to identify the emitters to be H2S(+) (A), SH(+)(A), and H(n greater than 2). The fluorescence quantum yield is about 6 percent. Photoexcitation of D2S at 49-96 nm produces fluorescence with a quantum yield of about 5 percent. The emitters are identified from the fluorescence spectra to be D2S(+)(A), SD(+)(A), and D(n greater than 2). The Franck-Condon factors for the SH(+) and SD(+) (A-X) transitions were determined. The SD(A-X) fluorescence was observed from photoexcitation of D2S at 100-151 nm, for which the fluorescence cross section and quantum yield were measured.

Accurate ab initio calculations which demonstrate a 3Pi(u) ground state for Al2

The computational requirements for accurately describing the spectroscopic constants for all three candidates for the ground state of Al2 are determined. Full CI(FCI) calculations are used to calibrate approximate methods of including the electron correlation. CASSCF/MRCI calculations which accurately reproduce the FCI results in the valence DZ + 2d Gaussian basis are carried to chemical accuracy by using extensive one-particle basis sets. The effect of 2s and 2p correlation and relativistic effects are considered as well as the valence 3s and 3p correlation. Several excited states are also considered. It is shown that the computed vibrational frequency of the (2) 3Pi(g) state and the Franck-Condon factors for the (1) 3Pi(u) - (2) 3Pi(g) transition are consistent with the spectrum obtained by Douglas et al. (1983) and Abe and Kolb (1983). It is therefore concluded that the ground state is 3Pi(u).

Theoretical studies of solar-pumped lasers

The investigation of stimulated emission causing transitions from the B(1) pi sub u state of sodium to the overlapping 2(1) sigma(+) sub g electronic state has been continued. A new method of estimating the Franck-Condon factors has been developed which instead of fitting the molecular potential curves with Morse functions, estimates the V(r) dependence by interpolation from given potential curves. The results for the sum of the rates from one vibrational level in the upper state to all the levels in the lower state show good agreement with the previous method, implying that curve crossing by stimulated emission due to photons from the oven is an important mechanism in sodium.

Dipole moments and transition probabilities of the i 3Pi sub g-b 3Sigma(+) sub u, c 3Pi sub u-a 3Sigma(+) sub g, and i 3Pi sub g-c 3Pi sub u systems of molecular hydrogen

Bonn-Oppenheimer-based ab initio calculations of dipole moments from the i 3Pi sub g-b 3Sigma(+) sub u, c 3Pi sub u-a 3Sigma(+) sub g, and i 3Pi sub g-c 3Pi sub u transitions of H2 have been conducted, to yield a tabulation of the dipole transition probabilities and Franck-Condon factors. These factors are given for transitions originating in the lowest vibrational level of the ground X 1Sigma(+) sub g state.

A laser study of the blue electronic transitions of CaS

Three electronic transitions of CaS are observed in the blue region of the spectrum. The vibrational bands in these transitions span thousands per cm owing to a large change in geometry. Approximately 1000/cm portion of the spectrum containing these bands is recorded at high resolution by dye laser excitation spectroscopy and analyzed. The states all have Omega = 1, and are tentatively labeled G 1Pi, F 1Pi, and f 3Pi 1. Spectroscopic constants are generated for all three upper states and for the X 1Sigma(+) state from a fit to 4340 individual lines. These constants are used to generate potential curves and Franck-Condon factors.

Induced ClO vacuum ultraviolet fluorescence

Some vibronic transitions of ClO such as G(v-prime = 11 )-X(v-double prime = 10), G(v-prime = 5)-X(v-double prime = 3) and H(v-prime = 4)-X(v-double prime = 2), which promote overtones of X(2pi3/2) to bound Rydberg states, are nearly resonant with the 130.6 nm O-atom emission line and possess sizable Franck-Condon factors. On this basis broadband detection of 'O atom' fluorescence in experiments involving vibrationally excited ClO(X) is ascribed to the radiative decay of ClO(G, H) rather than to the formation of O atoms; these observations raise the probability of monitoring ClO(X; v = 0) by VUV-induced fluorescence.

Ab initio calculation of a global potential, vibrational energies, and wave functions for HCN/HNC, and a simulation of the (A-tilde)-(X-tilde) emission spectrum

A potential energy surface for the HCN/HNC system which is a fit to extensive, high-quality ab initio, coupled-cluster calculations is presented. All HCN and HNC states with energies below the energy of the first delocalized state are reported and characterized. Vibrational transition energies are compared with all available experimental data on HCN and HNC, including high CH-overtone states up to 23,063/cm. A simulation of the (A-tilde)-(X-tilde) stimulated emission pumping (SEP) spectrum is also reported, and the results are compared to experiment. Franck-Condon factors are reported for odd bending states of HCN, with one quantum of vibrational angular momentum, in order to compare with the recent assignment by Jonas et al. (1992), on the basis of axis-switching arguments of a number of previously unassigned states in the SEP spectrum.

Electronic transition moment for the B(2)II-X(2)II system of NO

The upsilon' = 0-3 and 7 vibrational levels of the NO B(2)II state have been selectively excited by laser radiation. The fluorescence spectra together with calculated Franck-Condon factors and r-centroids have been used to evaluate the electronic transition moment. The results for upsilon' = 0-3 are in very good agreement with recent chemiluminescence measurements and ab initio calculations. Furthermore, the data from upsilon' = 7 have been used to extend the empirically determined moment to limits 1.23 and 1.78 A, improving agreement with experimentally determined lifetimes.

On Interpreting the Photoelectron Spectra of MgO

The (sup 2)Sigma(+) and (sup 2)Pi states of MgO(-) and the (sup 1)Sigma(+), (sup 1)Pi, and (sup 3)Pi states of MgO are studied using the averaged coupled-pair functional (ACPF) approach. The computed spectroscopic constants are in good agreement with the available experimental data. The computed Franck-Condon factors and photodetachment overlaps are compared with experiment.

A Study of the X(sup 2) Sigma(sup +) and A(sup 2) Pi States of MgAr(sup +) and MgKr(sup +)

The ground (sup 2)Sigma(sup +) and lowest excited (sup 2)Pi states of MgAr(sup +) and MgKr(sup +) are studied using the singles and doubles configuration interaction (SDCI) approach, in conjunction with large basis sets. The effect of Mg core correlation and core polarization are accounted for using the core-polarization potential (CPP) approach. Franck-Condon factors, oscillator strengths, radiative lifetimes, dissociation energies, bond lengths, and excitation energies are reported. The computed results are in good agreement with the available experimental data.

The low-lying electronic states of LiC

The spectroscopic constants for the doublet and quartet states of LiC below about 30,000/cm are determined using an internally contracted multireference configuration-interaction approach in conjunction with a [6s 5p 3d 2f] atomic natural orbital basis sets. All of the strongly bound states, X(sup 4)(SIGMA)(sup -),(1)(sup 2)(DELTA), (1)(sup 2)(SIGMA)(sup +), and (2)(sup 2) II, very ionic in character. The only bound-bound quartet transition in this energy range is (2)(sup 4)SIGMA(sup -) and Franck-Condon factors, Einstein A values, and lifetimes are reported for this transition.

Computational Spectroscopy of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Support of Laboratory Astrophysics

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are strong candidates for the molecular carriers of the unidentified infrared bands (UIR) and the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs). In order to test the PAH hypothesis, we have systematically measured the vibronic spectra of a number of jet-cooled neutral and ionized PAHs in the near ultraviolet (UV) to visible spectral ranges using the cavity ring-down spectroscopy. To support this experimental effort, we have carried out theoretical studies of the spectra obtained in our measurements. Ab initio and (time-dependent) density.functiona1 theory calculations are performed to obtain the geometries, energetics, vibrational frequencies, transition dipole moments, and normal coordinates of these PAH molecules. Franck-Condon (FC) calculations and/or vibronic calculations are then performed using the calculated normal coordinates and vibrational frequencies to simulate the vibronic spectra. It is found that vibronic interactions in these conjugated pi electron systems are often strong enough to cause significant deviations from the Born-Oppenheimer (BO) approximation. For vibronic transitions that are well described by the BO approximation, the vibronic band profiles are simulated by calculating the rotational structure of the vibronic transitions. Vibronic oscillator strength factors are calculated in the frame of the FC approximation from the electronic transition dipole moments and the FC factors. This computational effort together with our experimental measurements provides, for the first time, powerful tools for comparison with space-based data and, hence, a powerful approach to understand the spectroscopy of interstellar PAH analogs and the nature of the UIR and DIBs.

High-resolution absorption spectroscopy of room-temperature and jet-cooled ammonia between 59,000 and 93,000 cm -1

Here, we present new high-resolution photoabsorption spectra of ammonia spanning the region between 59,000 cm -1 and 93,000 cm -1 that were recorded by using the Fourier Transform Spectrometer at the Synchrotron SOLEIL. This region extends from just above the Franck-Condon envelope for the $\tilde{A}$ 1 $A$ 2 " ← $\tilde{X}$ 1 $A$ 1 ' transition to well above the NH 3 + $\tilde{X}$ + 2 $A$ 2 " ionization threshold. The spectra were recorded at a measured resolution of 0.23 cm -1 in both a room-temperature cell (293 K) and in a slit-jet supersonic expansion (~70 K). The absolute photoabsorption cross section with an uncertainty of ±5% is also reported for the room-temperature spectrum. The present resolution is a factor of 10 – 100 times higher than in other recently reported broad band spectra of ammonia, and many of the observed bands show partially resolved rotational structure. We have attempted to assign this structure for a number of these bands. The oscillator strengths extracted from the data are in good agreement with previous measurements but, in the case of structured bands, the present higher resolution measurements return higher peak absorption cross sections, that increase further when the sample is cooled. The present higher resolution spectra suggest that a number of previous vibronic band assignments that were based on quantum defect considerations may require some revision. Finally, we discuss the substantial differences between the photoabsorption and photoionization data just above the first ionization threshold.
