FCC feasibility studies: Impact of tracker- and calorimeter-detector performance on jet flavor identification and Higgs physics analyses

The ambitious physics program planned for the Future Circular Collider electron-positron phase imposes stringent constraints on detector performance. This study systematically investigates how different detector configurations impact jet flavor identification and their effects on high-profile physics analyses. Using Higgs boson coupling measurements and searches for invisible Higgs decays as benchmarks, we evaluate the sensitivity of these analyses to variations in tracker and calorimeter detector properties. We examine modifications to single-point resolution, material budget, silicon layer placement, and particle identification capabilities, quantifying their effects on flavor-tagging performance. Additionally, we present the first comprehensive study of Higgs-to-invisible decay detection using full detector simulation, providing insights for optimizing detector designs at lepton colliders.

A Feasibility Study on the Integration of Human Performance Data From Diverse Sources Based on the Complexity of a Proceduralized Task

Securing the safety of socio-technical systems including nuclear facilities is the upmost goal to ensure their sustainability because historical records demonstrate that the performance degradation of human operators (e.g., human errors) is one of the crucial contributors to the occurrence of unexpected events resulting in extensive casualties and financial losses. This implies that the collection of human performance data in diverse conditions with which they could be faced during the operation of nuclear facilities. As this collection requires significant resources, it is necessary to resolve how to accomplish it with limited resources. To address this challenge, as suggested in the SHEEP framework, it is indispensable to extract valuable insights after integrating various kinds of human performance data obtained from different sources. However, a practical method to soundly integrate them seems to be still incomplete. Accordingly, the applicability of TACOM (Task Complexity) measure is investigated as a tool to identify useful information based on the integration of human performance data observed from different simulation conditions. As a result, it is expected that the TACOM measure would play an important role in addressing the technical challenge in securing human performance data.

Automated Vehicle Feasibility Study

This study collected automated vehicle (AV) performance data on public roadways in Athens, Ohio. The route for the study contained a combination of roads with different functional classifications, conditions, annual average daily traffic, and ownership responsibilities for maintenance and repair. Preparation for the public road deployment was done in a controlled environment at Transportation Research Center’s SMARTCenter, a dedicated AV test facility in East Liberty, Ohio. Researchers analyzed data and extracted insights relevant for both AV developers and infrastructure owners and operators. The study found that rural environments offer a unique set of roadway features such as hills and curves, which can challenge the driving behavior of an AV. Rural regions can also contain a large number of low-traffic gravel roads that lack pavement markings, which appear to be a crucial infrastructure element for operation of current generation AVs. Similarly, the presence of well-maintained lane lines along curves can influence the AV’s roadway departure tendencies. The study found that curvature-related behavior of an AV is also influenced by driving speed on the roadway segment. Such findings were consistent regardless of the time of day along the route or season of data collection. However, commentary about AV performance in active adverse weather cannot be made, as this is still an area of active research.

Remote Home Energy Score Assessments (Feasibility Study)

The delivery of Home Energy Scores (HES) has been significantly impacted over the last year by the recent pandemic and ongoing limitations to person-to-person interactions. There are also historic challenges in providing HES to more remote geographies where assessor infrastructure is not in place. Alternative approaches to in-person, on-site home energy assessments could help address these current restrictions, while also potentially providing opportunities for the efficient delivery of HES in certain use cases after COVID-related restrictions are lifted. From the program administrator’s perspective, there needs to be confidence that the remote scores closely match what they would have been if the assessment had been performed on-site. The recommendations shown on a report generated from a remote score should closely match those of an onsite assessment. A remote assessment should be an option for all HES Partners and have direction on how to deliver those scores. From the HES partner’s and assessor’s perspective, there needs to be understanding of what level of experience is needed, what system infrastructure is required, the time expenditure of the remote assessment process, and the limitations of a remote assessment. From the homeowner’s perspective, there needs to be an awareness and comfort with the time commitment, the level of knowledge of the home, the equipment needed, and any physical requirements of the remote assessment process. During this study, Earth Advantage assessed methods for delivering Home Energy Score assessments remotely through web-based technology platforms and resident interaction in a diverse array of home types in different geographic locations. Earth Advantage developed remote assessment test protocols and integrated those testing protocols into existing Home Energy Score programs being overseen by USDOE Home Energy Score partners New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA), the Oregon Department of Energy (ODOE), and the City of Portland (PDX). Earth Advantage staff acted as the Remote assessor and gathered HES data remotely during the video sessions with participants. Authorized Home Energy Score assessors performed the onsite assessments that were then used to compare with the remote assessment data. This allowed the research to effectively test the efficacy of various remote assessment approaches in a diverse array of home-types. Earth advantage identified the key components of a remote assessment infrastructure which included Remote Home Energy Score Assessments Page vi processes, tools, services, methods and mechanisms that would better enable remote assessments. This report details methods, results, and findings of the HES remote assessment research. In addition, the report provides recommendations and best practices that could be used as guidance for the Home Energy Score administrator and the HES partners seeking to effectively conduct remote assessments.

Less-Than-Lethal Quick Deploy Inflatable Hall/Door Barrier: VISTA Feasibility Study

Physical protection of public buildings has long been a concern of police and security services where a balance of facility security and personnel safety is vital. Due to the nature of public spaces, the use of permanently installed and deploy-on-demand physical barrier systems must be safe for the legitimate occupants and visitors of that space. Such systems must seek to mitigate the personal and organizational consequences of unintentionally seriously injuring or killing an innocent bystander by slamming a heavy, rigid, and quick-deploying barrier into place. Consideration and implementation of less-than-lethal technologies is necessary to reduce risk to visitors and building personnel. One potential barrier solution is a fast-acting, high-strength, composite airbag barrier system for doorways and hallways to quickly deploy a less-than-lethal barrier at entry points as well as isolate intruders who have already gained access. This system is envisioned to be stored within an architecturally attractive selectively frangible shell that could be permanently installed at a facility or installed in remote or temporary locations as dictated by risk. The system would be designed to be activated remotely (hardwired or wireless) from a Central Alarm Station (CAS) or other secure location.

Feasibility Study of Spectrophotometry to Support a Promethium Production Program at ORNL

Optical spectroscopy can be used to optimize analytical measurements for lanthanide elements and provide real-time feedback to help guide production operations. This study evaluates spectrophotometry for the determination of samarium (Sm 3+ ) and neodymium (Nd 3+ ) in aqueous and organic solutions at concentrations relevant to a promethium (Pm) program separation scheme. Detection limits approached 0.5 mM for Nd 3+ and 2 mM for Sm 3+ using Ocean Insight spectrophotometers. Additionally, Sm 3+ detection limits using laser fluorescence spectra for Sm 3+ approached single ppm (mg∙L -1 ) levels. An absorption spectrum containing Nd and Pm is also reported and discussed. This work demonstrates proofof-principle concepts for applying spectrophotometry to online monitoring applications in support of a future Pm production program.

Feasibility Study of Advanced Manufacturing Techniques and Compositions of High Entropy Alloys

In line with the objectives of Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy Advanced Materials and Manufacturing technologies program (AMMT), this work focuses on new materials development and qualification research and development for next-generation, high-temperature nuclear reactors. While the currently qualified nuclear materials have demonstrated significant irradiation resistance at high temperatures, the community is still interested in materials that can sustain the harsh environments found in nuclear reactors for temperatures up to 1,000°C for nearly 100,000 hours. High entropy alloys (HEAs) have the potential to serve in these extreme environments of next generation nuclear reactors due to their unique phase transformation pathways and nanoscale and mesoscale microstructures. The current work focuses on understanding such nuclear energy relevant HEAs through a detailed literature survey and developing a decision matrix with criteria for identification of HEAs with may have most impact and value for further examination.
