Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) for AI fact Sheet

UQ is traditionally defined as quantitative characterization and estimation of uncertainties in both computational and real-world applications. It tries to determine how likely certain outcomes are if some aspects of the system are not exactly known.

Apollo Soyuz test project. USA-USSR, fact sheet

The Apollo Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) is discussed. The United States and the Soviet Union have agreed to develop compatible rendezvous and docking systems which will provide a basis for docking and rescue on future spacecraft of both nations. The ASTP mission will include testing the rendezvous system in orbit, verifying techniques for transfer of astronauts and cosmonauts, and conducting experiments while docked and undocked. Diagrams of the spacecraft and systems involved in the tests are presented. The prime contractors for the equipment are identified. Biographical data on the astronauts participating in the program are provided.

Facts and fiction of learning systems

The methodology that will provide the updated precision for the hardware control and the advanced decision making and planning in the software control is called learning systems and intelligent control. It was developed theoretically as an alternative for the nonsystematic heuristic approaches of artificial intelligence experiments and the inflexible formulation of modern optimal control methods. Its basic concepts are discussed and some feasibility studies of some practical applications are presented.

NASA Facts: Voyager

A news release on NASA's Voyager project is presented. The spacecraft, science instrumentation, experiments and a mission profile are described. A drawing identifying Voyager's major components and instrumentation was included along with diagrams showing the path of Voyager 1 (JST trajectory) past Jupiter, and the path of Voyager 2 (JXT trajectory) during its encounter with Jupiter. An exercise for student involvement was also provided.

Summary of experimentally determined facts concerning the behavior of the boundary layer and performance of boundary layer measurements

A summary report of boundary layer studies is presented. Preliminary results of experimental measurements show that: (1) A very thin layer (approximately 0.4 mm) of the boundary layer seems to be accelerated; (2) the static pressure of the outer flow does not remain exactly constant through the boundary layer; and (3) an oncoming boundary layer which is already turbulent at the suction point can again become laminar behind this point without being completely sucked off.
