MCNP6.3: A Year in Review [Slides]

This presentation discusses the past year and the many accomplishments of the MCNP6.3 team. It states that the MCNP6.3 release is imminent and that the approved, final documents have been making their way to the website. The code executables and source are already packaged up for distribution and the new installer is being finalized and tested now, for all platforms. The package will be sent to RSICC before the end of October 2022. Additionally, the presentation discusses some things to think about as MCNP6.3 is requested and/or used. For example, many of the recent efforts have been focused on making development, updates, and distribution of the code and documents more robust and streamlined. They will be revising/updating documents more frequently than ever before and they will be exploring avenues to distribute official patches to MCNP6.3. As they explain, this allows them to be more responsive to bugs and issues that are identified. In conclusion, the application of a patch to MCNP6.3 will require having the source code.

Horizontal Split Table Conceptual Design for Validation of Nuclear Data used in Advanced Reactors [Slides]

This presentation discusses a methodology that was developed to create conceptual designs of benchmark critical experiments for advanced reactors and nuclear data testing. A first concept that was explored was a pebble-bed high-temperature gas cooled reactor, based on the HTR-10 reactor. The very high correlation is a proof of concept that the design is similar to the application, and performing such critical experiments would help nuclear data testing and validation. Other concepts could be explored if needed, such as a molten-salt reactor, a sodium-cooled fast reactor, or heat pipe reactors/microreactor.

Verifying MCNP Models of the TEX High 240 Plutonium Benchmark

Computational modeling programs are invaluable tools that allow us to understand systems, safely develop new processes, and make reliable predictions about future designs. However, the effectiveness of these codes is limited by the degree to which their parameters match the real world. In the field of nuclear engineering, cross section data is one of these vital parameters. Accurate cross section data on important fissile and fissionable isotopes promotes the design of safer and more efficient fabrication, transportation, storage, and stockpiling of nuclear fuel. Unfortunately, there are knowledge gaps in data on key isotopes. In 2011, a multinational meeting hosted by the US Department of Energy Nuclear Criticality Safety Program ranked the priority of certain cross section data needs. In response, Lawrence Livermore National Lab (LLNL) designed the Thermal and Epithermal eXperiment (TEX) series of benchmark experiments. Benchmark experiments are used to validate current cross section data. They validate data by comparing the results of an actual experiment to the predicted results from a computational model. The data a benchmark applies to depends on the isotope and energy range the experiment’s neutron multiplication factor ( k eff ) is most sensitive to. The development and testing of the TEX High 240 Plutonium Benchmark will help validate 240 Pu cross section data. The configuration and materials of this benchmark are designed to be most sensitive to 240 Pu's intermediate energy range (from 0.625 ev to 100 keV ). MCNP® models of the assembly have been developed by LLNL and the results have been written in the final design report. In order for the discrepancies between benchmark models and experiments to be attributed to cross section inaccuracies, the accuracy of the models needs to be verified. The goal of this project is to verify of the results of LLNL's modeling by creating a new set of MCNP models and comparing the results.

Status of HEU-Pb in the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) Handbook

The Department of Energy invests tens of millions of dollars each year to develop the next generation of nuclear engineering modeling & simulation (M&S) tools. These tools are used to analyze advanced reactor designs and the safety of current nuclear operations. As computers become more powerful, we are able to enhance resolution in our calculations. This improved resolution is taking us to a point where the limitations of simulation capability are in the quality of data, including our ability to quantify the uncertainty and sensitivity of the data. In order to model systems of interest with increasing accuracy, the industry must improve key nuclear data measurements. Thus, M&S tools need evaluated and quality-assured experimental data for validation purposes. The International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) compiles and evaluates experiment data in a handbook that can be used by criticality safety engineers and others to validate computer codes and cross-section libraries at nuclear facilities. Both critical and subcritical experiments are included in the handbook. Figure 1 organizes all the benchmark evaluations that have been performed by the isotope of interest, in this case Pb, and the average neutron energy the system. Compared to other isotopes of interest for nuclear applications, there are few benchmark evaluations for Pb systems. The lack of integral measurements to determine errors in Pb cross-section data has caused the latest nuclear cross-section libraries to over/underestimate k eff compared to experimental results. Therefore, this evaluation fills an important knowledge gap in benchmark evaluations.

IRMA

IRMA (In)elastic Representation of Materials As S(α,β) evaluations IRMA turns one phonon model into three outputs that usually require three separate tool chains: an evaluated nuclear-data file, predicted neutron-scattering spectra, and scattering kernels for Monte Carlo transport. The three outputs draw on a single, consistent description of the material, so the evaluation, the spectroscopy that can validate it, and the transport that uses it always agree about the physics. Nuclear data. IRMA writes ENDF-6 File 7 thermal scattering evaluations on automatically constructed (α, β) grids. This part reimplements and generalizes NJOY's LEAPR: the classic kernels reproduce freshly generated NJOY2016 tapes digit for digit and published reference tapes to about 1e-4, and the generalized paths add the exact coherent one-phonon term, anisotropic Debye-Waller tensors, coherent elastic for arbitrary crystals, and a per-species partition for polyatomic materials. The tapes feed NJOY, AMPX, FUDGE, and every transport code downstream of them. Neutron spectroscopy. The irma.spectra forward model projects the same physics onto an instrument's kinematics and resolution: INS spectra for VISION and generic indirect geometries, and 2-D S(Q,E) powder maps for direct-geometry spectrometers, from a phonopy model or straight from a phonon DOS. It can be used to predict a proposed measurement before beam time; in analysis, it supplies the calculated single-scattering counterpart of a measured spectrum, from the same material description the evaluation was built from. Monte Carlo transport. The irma.ncrystal exporter writes per-temperature scattering kernels for the companion NCrystal plugin, so McStas, OpenMC, and other NCrystal-aware codes sample the same physics. The exported kernels carry the per-site anisotropic Debye-Waller tensors, keeping directional coherent-elastic physics that NCrystal's standard scalar treatment does not represent. With the same physics inside a transport code, an entire beamline becomes a virtual experiment: IRMA's end-to-end validation ran a custom McStas implementation of the ARCS spectrometer, assembled from the existing McVine and McStas models, against measured data. From a bare crystal structure. The irma mlip front end builds the phonon model itself: a structure file and a choice of potential are enough. Nine pretrained machine-learned interatomic potentials are supported, on a laptop CPU, with no first-principles calculation; an approximate phonon model for a new material costs minutes, not a DFT campaign, and the build emits prefilled inputs for all three outputs. The result is a good starting point rather than a finished evaluation: survey-quality physics with every parameter exposed for review. A converged atomistic calculation enters the same way, as a phonopy model, when higher fidelity is needed.

ENDFtk: A robust tool for reading and writing ENDF-formatted nuclear data

ENDFtk is a recently developed C++ and Python interface to interact with ENDF-6 formatted nuclear data files. It provides a robust and complete interface, allowing the reading and writing of all formats currently part of the ENDF-6 formats manual, as well as some non-ENDF formats used by the NJOY processing code. It provides an interface that mimics the names in the ENDF-6 formats manual as well as an equivalent interface using human-readable attribute names. It is robust and powerful enogh for nuclear data experts to develop complex applications, while also simple enough to be used non-experts to retrieve and manipulate evaluated nuclear data. ENDFtk offers the ability to easily interrogate and manipulate data either in large-scale code projects or in simple Python scripts. Here, in this paper, a brief overview of the interface is given, as well as more substantial examples demonstrating plotting simple data, interacting with more complex data, and writing new data to files. Thermal Neutron Scattering Research at ORNL – ENDF File Validation [Slides]

ENDF File Validation is a process developed to simulate VISION experiments. This method showed significant differences in inelastic spectra compared to experimental measurements. Differential data should be incorporated into thermal neutron scattering evaluation process to ensure accurate TSL files. The Polyethylene Discrepancy Issue has been found and corrected. The resulting ENDF manual change has been submitted and is currently under review.

Uranium Carbide and Uranium-Metal Thermal Scattering Law Evaluations and Cross Sections [Slides]

New Uranium Carbide and Uranium Metal evaluations have been developed using the FLASSH platform. Ab initio LD/MD models converged electronic, magnetic, and dynamical properties and demonstrate good agreement with experimental data. Thermal scattering cross sections generate inelastic and elastic thermal neutron scattering libraries in FLASSH . New TSL evaluations occurred in the production of ENDF File 7 data for Uranium Carbide and Uranium Metal submitted to NNDC for ENDF/B-VIII.1 release.

Assessment of Evaluations for 239 Pu Photonuclear Cross Sections

We have performed an initial assessment of available data libraries for photonuclear reactions on 239 Pu. Specifically, we considered the following five evaluated data libraries: the ENDF/B-VIII.0 and the recently deployed ENDF/B.VIII.1 Evaluated Nuclear Data Files, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Photonuclear Data Library 2019 (IAEA-2019), the Japanese evaluated nuclear data library version 5 (JENDL-5), and the 2023 version of the TALYS Evaluated Nuclear Data Library (TENDL-2023). Each of these libraries were translated form ENDF to GNDS format using FUDGE. For each of the Pu isotopes, we provide a comparison with available experimental data in the EXFOR experimental nuclear reaction database, as well as a rapid quantitative assessment of the quality of the evaluation.

The current status of inelastic and capture Gamma-ray production evaluations in translated ENDF-VIII.0 GNDS files and recommended remediation actions

This report provides the status of discrete nuclear levels and inelastic gamma-ray production for neutron induced reactions in current ENDF-VIII.0 evaluations for the isotopes in the GRIN project. Different categories of issues are identified after a comparison with information from “adopted” ENSDF files. Improvement strategies are given and recommendations are described. We have included a similar, but more limited, analysis for thermal capture data where EGAF and ENSDF thermal libraries are considered. In addition, we provide a validation plan to employ different transport code simulations.

Nuclear Science for the Manhattan Project and Comparison to Today’s ENDF Data

Nuclear physics advances in the United States and Britain from 1939 to 1945 are described. The Manhattan Project’s work led to an explosion in our knowledge of nuclear science. A conference in April 1943 at Los Alamos provided a simple formula used to compute critical masses and laid out the research program needed to determine the key nuclear constants. In short order, four university accelerators were disassembled and reassembled at Los Alamos, and methods were established to make measurements on extremely small samples owing to the initial lack of availability of enriched 235U and plutonium. I trace the program that measured fission cross sections, fission-emitted neutron multiplicities and their energy spectra, and transport cross sections, comparing the measurements with our best understanding today as embodied in the Evaluated Nuclear Data File ENDF/B-VIII.0. The large nuclear data uncertainties at the beginning of the project, which often exceeded 25% to 50%, were reduced by 1945 often to less than 5% to 10%. Uranium-235 and plutonium-239 fission cross-section assessments in the fast mega-electron-volt range were reduced following more accurate measurements, and the neutron multiplicity $\overline{v}$ increased. By a lucky coincidence of canceling errors, the initial critical mass estimates were close to the final estimated masses. Some images from historical documents from our Los Alamos archives are shown. Many of the original measurements from these early years have not previously been widely available. Through this work, these data have now been archived in the international experimental nuclear reaction data library (EXFOR) in a collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency and Brookhaven National Laboratory.

ENDF/B-VIII.1

The ENDF/B-VIII.1 release is the newest evaluated nuclear data library produced, distributed, and recommended by CSEWG for use in nuclear science and technology applications. Among the many key advances, relative to the previous version ENDF/B-VIII.0, are: re-evaluation of 239Pu file by a joint international effort; updated 16,18O, 19F, 28-30Si, 50-54Cr, 55Mn, 54,56,57Fe, 63,65Cu, 139La, 233,235,238U, and 240,241Pu neutron nuclear data by the IAEA-coordinated INDEN collaboration; significant changes for 3He, 6Li, 9Be, 51V, 88Sr, 103Rh, 140,142Ce, Dy, 181Ta, Pt, 206-208Pb, and 234,236U neutron data; new nuclear data for the photo-nuclear, being 196 adopted from the IAEA2019 Photonuclear Data Library and one new file from JENDL-5; and new evaluations for the charged-particle and atomic sublibraries. Numerous thermal neutron scattering kernels were re-evaluated or provided for the very first time. Additionally, new covariance testing was implemented. ENDF/B-VIII.1 reduced bias in the simulations of many integral experiments with particular progress noted for fluorine, copper and stainless steel containing benchmarks. Data issues which had hindered the deployment of ENDF/B-VIII.0 for commercial nuclear power applications in high burn-up situations, were addressed. ENDF/B-VIII.1 data are distributed in both ENDF-6 and GNDS formats.

FLASSH 1.0: Thermal Scattering Law Evaluation and Cross Section Generation

The Full Law Analysis Scattering System Hub ( FLASSH ) is an advanced code which evaluates the thermal scattering law (i.e. TSL, S(α,β)) for thermal scattering cross sections and resonance Doppler broadening. The ability to accurately capture these two key cross section features is dependent on accurate, high fidelity TSL evaluations. FLASSH 1.0 provides advanced physics capabilities resulting in an improved, generalized TSL to most accurately represent the lattice dynamics within any material. This improved TSL will allow for consistent analysis in both the thermal and epithermal energy ranges. The features for TSL analysis are packaged within the FLASSH GUI for easy user interface along with data output in many file formats including ENDF File 7 and ACE files.

Development of nuclear data processing code FRENDY version 2

Nuclear data processing is an important interface between an evaluated nuclear data library and neutronics calculation codes. JAEA has been developed the new nuclear data processing code FRENDY from 2013. FRENDY version 1 generates the ACE files used for the continuous-energy Monte Carlo codes including PHITS, Solomon, Serpent,and MCNP and it was released as the open-source software under the 2-clause BSD license in 2019.After we released FRENDY version 1, many functions, e.g., the multi-group neutron cross-section library generation, the statistical uncertainty quantification of the probability tables for unresolved resonance cross-section, the 'perturbation' of the ACE file for uncertainty quantification, and the modification of the ENDF-6 formatted nuclear data file, have been developed. We released FRENDY version 2 including these functions. The present paper gives an overview of FRENDY and presents features of new functions implemented in FRENDY version 2. (authors)

ORNL Contributions to the ENDF/B-VIII.1 Library [Slides]

For uranium and plutonium isotopes, evaluation work is converging to a stable configuration with an overall satisfactory benchmark performance (more information on the validation tests after CSEWG). Strontium evaluation was included in the repository library and successfully tested by processing codes relative to an alternative quantification of the external function. Cerium covariance matrices were updated to address review comments on the magnitude of the uncertainty. For future uncertainty quantification, theoretical observables should be properly decoupled from current measured guidelines. Tests to correctly include LP (from resonance parameters) fitted to measured energy-averaged data are in progress. Current ENDF files contains experimental LP data.

140,142 Ce Neutron Cross Section Resolved Resonance Region Evaluation [Slides]

ORNL has completed new RRR evaluations for 140,142 Ce. A lack of integral measurements made validation difficult, but the difference from Kadonis values suggests that more investigation of capture cross section is warranted. The complete file (with updated File2 and File32) has been submitted to NNDC repository for inclusion in next release of ENDF. A sponsor report publication is in progress.
