High-heat transfer lithium-ion batteries: A new era in battery thermal management

Despite advances in lithium-ion battery technology, critical challenges remain that must be addressed to accelerate electric vehicle (EV) adoption and global energy transformation. Significantly improved battery thermal management (BTM) is key to overcoming these challenges. BTM approaches focus on increasing heat transfer coefficients via air, liquid, or refrigerant cooling, but less attention is given to reducing the battery's thermal resistance, a major bottleneck for heat transfer. This work introduces a novel approach to reduce battery thermal resistance by integrating in-plane heat transfer with optimized cell geometry, minimized thermal resistances, and reduced interfacial resistances, representing a departure from previous methods. The standard prismatic can cell incorporating this technology is referred to as the high heat transfer (HHT) battery. An equivalent resistance battery thermal model is developed for speed and accuracy, validated against experimental data in the literature, demonstrating strong correlation and ensuring reliable predictions for real-world performance. Thermal performance metrics of the conventional and HHT batteries are compared using a parametric study with air, liquid, and refrigerant boundary conditions across a range of aspect ratios. The HHT battery shows a heat removal rate up to 20 times higher than a conventional battery. These findings suggest that HHT technology could be transformative for EV battery performance, enabling fast charging, mitigating thermal runaway, extending battery life, reducing cold-weather power loss, increasing reliability, lowering costs, and enabling higher energy density, all critical for EV adoption and energy transformation. Future work will focus on prototyping and real-world testing to refine these findings for commercial-scale applications.

Operando methods: A new era of electrochemistry

One of the grand challenges facing electrochemistry is to directly resolve the complex nature of (electro)catalyst active sites and capture real-time “movies” of reaction dynamics, i.e. “watching chemistry in action”. The need for such fundamental understanding has stimulated the development of operando/in situ methods, which have greatly enhanced our ability to identify activity descriptors of electrocatalysts and establish structure–property relationships of energy materials. Here, this review summarizes the frontiers of operando electrochemical liquid-cell scanning transmission electron microscopy and correlative synchrotron X-ray methods, which are complementary tools to comprehensively investigate reaction dynamics across multiple spatiotemporal scales. In an effort to encourage greater adoption of advanced operando methods by the general electrochemistry community, this review points out the need to benchmark electrochemistry in confined and heterogenous liquid environment with minimal beam-induced damage. We anticipate that multimodal operando methods will become indispensable for understanding interfacial reaction mechanisms for the broad chemistry and energy materials communities.

Trends in Radiation Therapy for Bone Metastases, 2015 to 2017: Choosing Wisely in the Era of Complex Radiation

Guidelines recommend short-course (≤10 fractions) external-beam radiation therapy (EBRT) for bone metastases. Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) may also improve outcomes; however, routine use is not recommended outside clinical trials. We assessed national radiation therapy trends in complex techniques for bone metastases and associated expenditures.

Primary Mediastinal B Cell Lymphoma in the Positron-Emission Tomography Era Executive Summary of the American Radium Society Appropriate Use Criteria

Primary mediastinal B cell lymphoma (PMBCL) is a highly curable subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that is diagnosed predominantly in adolescents and young adults. Consequently, long-term treatment-related morbidity is critical to consider when devising treatment strategies that include different chemoimmunotherapy strategies with or without radiation therapy. Furthermore, adaptive approaches using the end-of-chemotherapy (EOC) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) scanning may help to determine which patients may benefit from additional therapies. We aimed to develop evidence-based guidelines for treating these patients.

Superlattice-Structured Films by Magnetron Sputtering as New Era Electrodes for Advanced Lithium-ion Batteries

Sustaining sound structures in Si-based anodes is extremely challenging because of the high volumetric expansion that occurs upon cycling. To maintain high capacities over cycles, new designs rely on engineering-specific hierarchical geometries and/or optimized composite compositions such that at least one of the multiple elements serves as buffer and/or electron conductive pathways in the electrodes. In this paper, we report an innovative design in which alternating layers of periodic atomic structures involving multiple elements form a new anode material for lithium-ion batteries. In this work, a superlattice-structured amorphous film made using Si, Mo, and Cu is fabricated by a simple and scalable magnetron sputtering process for the first time. This continuous and repetitive superlattice formation along the film thickness provides a homogeneous stress-strain distribution. The Mo-Cu layer in the superlattice acts as an inactive-conductive layer and as a backbone to handle the volume expansion of active Si upon cycling. This nano-functional superlattice approach enables harnessing the high energy density of Si while maintaining its structural stability. As a result, the electrode exhibits high specific capacity and capacity retention even at high cycling rates. The possible use of the film in a full cell is also evaluated by cycling it vs. the LiMn 1.5 Ni 0.5 O 4 cathode. The full cell maintains a stable capacity of about 900 mAh g anode -1 over 150 cycles, at ~600 mA g -1 rate. The remarkable performance of this nano-functional superlattice film is found to be promising as anodes for applications that require high energy, long calendar life, and excellent abuse tolerance such as electric vehicle batteries.

Valued peaks: Sustainable water allocation for small hydropower plants in an era of explicit ecological needs

Optimizing hydropower operations to balance economic profitability and support functioning ecosystem services is integral to river management policy. In this article, we propose a dynamic, constrained optimization framework for small hydropower plants (SHPs) to evaluate trade-offs between economic profitability and socio-ecological requirements. Specifically, we examine the balance between short-term losses in hydropower generation and the potential for compensatory benefits in the form of revenue from recreational ecosystem services, irrespective of the direct beneficiary. Our framework integrates a fish habitat model, a hydropower optimization model, and a recreational ecosystem service estimate to evaluate different environmental flow scenarios. The optimization process gives three outflow release scenarios, informed by previous streamflow realisations (dam inflow), and designed environmental flow constraints. The framework is applied and tested for the river Kuusinkijoki in North-eastern Finland, which is a habitat for migratory brown trout and grayling populations. We show that the revenue loss due to the environmental flow constraints arises through a reduction in revenue per generated energy unit and through a reduction in turbine efficiency. Additionally, the simulation results reveal that all the designed environmental flow constraints cannot be met simultaneously. Under the environmental flow scenario with both minimum flow and flow ramping rate constraints, the annual hydropower revenue decreases by 16.5 %. An annual increase of 8 % in recreational fishing visits offsets the revenue loss. In conclusion, the developed framework provides knowledge of the costs and benefits of hydropower environmental flow constraints and guides the prioritizing process of environmental measures.
