Electrical energy storage systems offer a wide range of options to efficiently manage our power supply infrastructure. Energy and environmental security via renewable resources and energy storage devices will also play a critical role in addressing the supply-demand challenges. A novel energy efficient storage system based on near isothermal compressed air energy storage concept, named as Ground-Level Integrated Diverse Energy Storage (GLIDES) is analyzed for integration with residential and commercial buildings. Additionally, the influence of different configurational aspects on key performance and cost attributes is presented in this study. GLIDES modules in the range of 0.5 kWh–15 kWh configurations were considered for residential buildings whereas 25 kW h–500 kW h modules were considered for commercial buildings. Detailed cost and performance analysis of the GLIDES module proved them to be an effective resource in lowering the peak energy demand and corresponding utility bills.

Key Considerations for Adoption of Technical Codes and Standards for Battery Energy Storage Systems in Thailand

Battery storage is “technology that enables power system operators and utilities to store energy for later use. A battery energy storage system (BESS) is an electrochemical device that charges (or collects energy) from the grid or a power plant and then discharges that energy at a later time to provide electricity or other grid services when needed”. As countries in Asia consider the inclusion of BESS in their power systems to meet policy objectives, renewable energy goals, increase resilience, and expand energy access, there is an opportunity to learn from the experiences of other regions and jurisdictions that have developed more advanced storage markets and deployment methodologies. This report presents global best practices of codes, standards, and interconnection procedures developed to support the safe and reliable deployment of BESS. Several relevant case studies highlight current efforts to ensure safe operation of BESS and showcase potential pathways for adoption of relevant codes and standards. Specifically, this report is intended to support the Thailand Office of Energy Regulatory Commission (OERC) and other stakeholders in their efforts to develop technical codes and standards to govern the installation and operation of BESS; it may also be utilized as a guide for other countries as interest in the deployment of BESS technologies continues to grow.

The Power and Energy Storage Systems Toolbox–PSTess (V1.0)

This document describes the Power and Energy Storage Systems Toolbox for MATLAB, abbreviated as PSTess. This computing package is a fork of the Power Systems Toolbox (PST). PST was originally developed at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and later upgraded by Dr. Graham Rogers at Cherry Tree Scientific Software. While PSTess shares a common lineage with PST Version 3.0, it is a substantially different application. This document supplements the main PST manual by describing the features and models that are unique to PSTess. As the name implies, the main distinguishing characteristic of PSTess is its ability to model inverter-based energy storage systems (ESS). The model that enables this is called ess.m , and it serves the dual role of representing ESS operational constraints and the generator/converter interface. As in the WECC REGC_A model, the generator/converter interface is modeled as a controllable current source with the ability to modulate both real and reactive current. The model ess.m permits four-quadrant modulation, which allows it to represent a wide variety of inverter-based resources beyond energy storage when paired with an appropriate supplemental control model. Examples include utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) power plants, Type 4 wind plants, and static synchronous compensators (STATCOM). This capability is especially useful for modeling hybrid plants that combine energy storage with renewable resources or FACTS devices.

A control oriented comprehensive degradation model for battery energy storage system life prediction

In order to ensure that stationary battery energy storage systems (BESSs) provide reliable energy buffering, both for power quality and economic purposes, the degradation must be considered. Cell degradation involves various side reactions and is highly dependent on its operating conditions. To accurately track cell degradation and predict its impact on battery behavior, a comprehensive physics-based degradation model based on an electrolyte phase-enhanced single particle (SP) model is developed. Key degradation physics, namely solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer formation and growth, Li plating on the graphite anode, and Mn dissolution on cathode of nickel-cobalt-manganese oxide (NMC622) are considered. The model is validated against experimental capacity data. The results reveal that the deposition rate of both SEI layer and Li metal increase as the charge voltage increases. At the cathode side, the solvent oxidation rate determines the Mn dissolution rate. As a result, the volume fraction of NMC622 in the cathode continually decreases at a gradually increasing rate.

Systems and methods for randomized, packet-based power management of conditionally-controlled loads and bi-directional distributed energy storage systems

The present disclosure provides a distributed and anonymous approach to demand response of an electricity system. The approach conceptualizes energy consumption and production of distributed-energy resources (DERs) via discrete energy packets that are coordinated by a cyber computing entity that grants or denies energy packet requests from the DERs. The approach leverages a condition of a DER, which is particularly useful for (1) thermostatically-controlled loads, (2) non-thermostatic conditionally-controlled loads, and (3) bi-directional distributed energy storage systems. In a first aspect of the present approach, each DER independently requests the authority to switch on for a fixed amount of time (i.e., packet duration). The coordinator determines whether to grant or deny each request based electric grid and/or energy or power market conditions. In a second aspect, bi-directional DERs, such as distributed-energy storage systems (DESSs) are further able to request to supply energy to the grid.

Resilient and Cost-Effective Hybrid Li-Ion Battery Energy Storage System for Sites with Solar Generation and Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging (CRADA Final Report, CRD-19-00799)

The batteries of an energy storage system designed for multiple use-cases are traditionally selected to withstand the highest rate at which a battery is discharged relative to its maximum capacity (C-rate) and cycling requirements of the most intense use-case. However, this is not cost-effective given that the price of the batteries is strongly correlated to C-rate and cyclability. We propose to establish design guidelines for a hybrid energy storage system and test an edge controller that uses high-power and high-energy batteries for high- cyclability use cases such as frequency regulation and electric vehicle (EV) charging and low-cost batteries for low-power and low-cyclability use cases such as summer peak loads. The three main objectives of this proposal are (i) establishing sizing guidelines for such a hybrid storage system, (ii) installing a hybrid storage system in the Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) sized based on those guidelines, and (iii) testing an edge controller specific for the system through hardware tests.

Optimal sizing of battery energy storage systems for peak shaving and demand response using a degradation-aware Bayesian Optimization-Mixed-Integer Linear Programming framework

The increasing integration of renewable energy and rising electricity demand highlight the importance of battery energy storage systems for peak shaving and demand response. Unlike prior approaches that overlook operational impacts on degradation, this study proposes a Bayesian Optimization–Mixed Integer Linear Programming framework for optimal battery energy storage system sizing. In this framework, Mixed Integer Linear Programming determines short-term scheduling while a calibrated electrochemical model iteratively evaluates degradation. The central hypothesis is that the framework can efficiently identify optimal sizes that yield realistic and economically robust outcomes. The method is tested across three scenarios: peak shaving, peak shaving with energy-reduction demand response, and peak shaving with power-reduction demand response. Results show that the framework converge to the optimum within 20 iterations out of 150 possible sizes. Under baseline conditions, the framework consistently selects the smallest feasible system, minimizing unnecessary degradation costs from oversized storage. Sensitivity analyses reveal that larger systems are favored as demand rates or incentives increase. Comparisons of demand response programs indicate that power-reduction demand response offers greater economic benefits than energy-reduction demand response, although demand savings from peak shaving remain the dominant contributor to overall performance. This study demonstrates that the proposed framework balances computational tractability with degradation fidelity, identifies critical economic thresholds for investment, and offers a practical, flexible tool to guide industrial stakeholders in cost-effective battery energy storage system deployment.

A 20-kW DC Oak Ridge Converter with Integrated AC & DC Sources for Grid Services and Energy Storage Systems

This paper proposes a wireless power transfer (WPT) platform with integrated energy conversion that has the capability for 1) recharging the energy storage systems (ESSs) from the grid systems, including renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, etc., 2) off grid systems recharging the ESSs from dc grid systems, 3) grid recharging of electric vehicles (EVs), and 4) off grid recharging of EVs from ESSs. The unique aspect of the method is the use of multi-interface power electronic converter for the grid and ESSs and EVs that can support a range of applications with ac / dc and dc / dc energy conversion ability in a single converter system. The key enabling technology to achieve these functionalities is Oak Ridge Converter (ORC) with polyphase coupler coil system both developed at ORNL. This new technology enables higher power density WPT systems while allowing the coils to interface from ac grid at 60 Hz frequency or dc source directly merging with 85 kHz operating frequency of switching component. The experimental results of the proposed system are presented for 20 kW output power with the system overall efficiency around 95.4% from dc source and 93% overall efficiency from ac grid achieving 9-10% current total harmonic distortion (THD) and 0.98-0.99 power factor (PF).

Magnetically Levitated and Constrained Flywheel Energy Storage System

The concept of using linear induction motors to lift, constrain, accelerate, and decelerate a large-scale flywheel is proposed, and some of the advantages are investigated. Calculations for a Magnetically Levitated Energy Storage System (MLES) are performed that compare a single large scale MLES with a current state of the art flywheel energy storage system in order to show the relative differences and advantages of such a system. The system that is used for comparison is a typical Beacon Power flywheel energy system. This is currently one of the state-of-the-art flywheel energy storage systems and so it can be used to provide a basic data set to compare to an MLES system.

Peak cooling load shift capability of a thermal energy storage system integrated with an active insulation system in US climate zones

This study aims to evaluate a thermal energy storage (TES) system integrated with an active insulation system (AIS) to form a TES + AIS integrated wall system as a partition and as a secondary cooling system to shift the peak load and reduce cooling energy consumption. To understand and demonstrate its cooling performance, the TES + AIS integrated wall system was installed in an office building in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. To investigate the effect of the TES + AIS integrated wall system in a typical office building and various climate zones, the US Department of Energy’s prototype office building model was modified to accommodate the proposed system. In this work, results showed that the minimum size of the proposed system to achieve energy savings varies depending on climate conditions. The minimum size of the proposed system for cooling energy saving and shifting peak cooling demand in climate zones 2, 3, and 5 is 29.7 m 2 , whereas it is 44.6 m 2 in zones 4 and 6. By installing the minimum size of the proposed system, 11.3 % to 16.4 % of cooling energy can be shifted during discharge hours in a representative summer day.

Voltage Control Strategy for Energy Storage System in Sustainable Distribution System Operation

Due to the increasing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) required for the sustainable distribution system, new voltage control strategy is needed by utilities. Traditional voltage control strategy can not support the increasing number of DERs in a coordinated and scalable manner to meet the operational voltage regulation requirement. Supported by the power electronics converter, the energy storage system can provide fast, smooth, and flexible voltage control services. In this paper, an effective and easy to implement sensitivity-based voltage control strategy is developed for the energy storage system. The developed control strategy is validated using an industrial feeder data in Northwest Washington. The proposed strategy can mitigate the voltage unbalance issue, improve the voltage profile, and correct power factors while supporting sustainable distribution system operation.

Integration of a Wigner effect-based energy storage system with an advanced nuclear reactor

In this work, an innovative energy storage concept based on the purposeful creation of defects in crystalline material by neutron irradiation is presented. Lattice defects are generated when heavy particles collide with the atoms in a crystal structure, i.e., if the incoming particles have enough energy, recoil atoms are displaced from their initial lattice sites. Most of the displaced atoms will eventually combine with nearby vacancies, but some of them will come to rest in non-ideal locations. The energy held by displaced atoms is called Wigner energy. Lattice defects can migrate and form clusters, and the Wigner energy can be released from these groupings if sufficient activation energy is provided. In the nuclear industry, this effect is well-known since it represented an issue for graphite-moderated reactors. This work presents the conceptual design of an engineering system that exploits this physical process to store the energy of neutrons in advanced reactor concepts. In the first part of the paper, the theoretical performance of an energy storage system based on the Wigner effect is described. Given the lattice properties and the compatibility with the harsh reactor environment, graphite was selected as the candidate material for the irradiation targets. Both experimental data and molecular dynamics simulations confirmed that this system can achieve performance comparable with state-of-the-art batteries in terms of stored energy density. In the second part of the paper, the engineering challenges of this innovative technology and the proposed solutions are described. After defining the optimal irradiation conditions, the different steps of the operation of the proposed energy system (from energy storing to energy harvesting) were defined. Finally, the integration of this concept with advanced reactor designs, i.e., a Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor and a Molten Salt-cooled Reactor, was investigated and the corresponding performance was evaluated.
