Intercomputer transfer in full precision of arbitrary data on magnetic tape employing NASTRAN user tape format

A description is presented of two new utility programs which implement the transfer, in full precision, of arbitrary data (matrices or tables) between any of the three NASTRAN operative computers without the handling of large card decks. These computers include the CDC 6000 series, the IBM 360-370 series, and the Univac 1100 series. The data may be generated by NASTRAN or by another computer program if the NASTRAN user tape format is employed.

Coherent receiver employing nonlinear coherence detection for carrier tracking

The concept of nonlinear coherence employed in carrier tracking to improve telecommunications efficiency is disclosed. A generic tracking loop for a coherent receiver is shown having seven principle feedback signals which may be selectively added and applied to a voltage controlled oscillator to produce a reference signal that is phase coherent with a received carrier. An eighth feedback signal whose nonrandom components are coherent with the phase detected and filtered carrier may also be added to exploit the sideband power of the received signal. A ninth feedback signal whose nonrandom components are also coherent with the quadrature phase detected and filtered carrier could be additionally or alternatively included in the composite feedback signal to the voltage controlled oscillator.

Special perturbations employing osculating reference states

The concept of employing osculating reference position and velocity vectors in the numerical integration of the equations of motion of a satellite is examined. The choice of the reference point is shown to have a significant effect upon numerical efficiency and the class of trajectories described by the differential equations of motion. For example, when the position and velocity vectors on the osculating orbit at a fixed reference time are chosen, a universal formulation is yielded. For elliptical orbits, however, this formulation is unattractive for numerical integration purposes due to Poisson terms (mixed secular) appearing in the equations of motion. Other choices for the reference point eliminate this problem but usually at the expense of universality. A number of these formulations, including a universal one, are considered here. Comparisons of the numerical characteristics of these techniques with those of the Encke method are presented.

The design and performance of axially symmetrical contoured wall diffusers employing suction boundary layer control

This paper presents a procedure for the design and the performance prediction of axially symmetrical contoured wall diffusers employing suction boundary layer control. An inverse problem approach was used in the potential flow design of the diffuser wall contours. The experimentally observed flow characteristics and the stability of flows within the diffuser are also described. Guidelines for the design of low suction (less than 10 percent of the inlet flow) and thus high effectiveness contoured wall diffusers are also provided based on the results of the experimental program.

System analysis of a piston steam engine employing the uniflow principle, a study in optimized performance

Results are reported which were obtained from a mathematical model of a generalized piston steam engine configuration employing the uniflow principal. The model accounted for the effects of clearance volume, compression work, and release volume. A simple solution is presented which characterizes optimum performance of the steam engine, based on miles per gallon. Development of the mathematical model is presented. The relationship between efficiency and miles per gallon is developed. An approach to steam car analysis and design is presented which has purpose rather than lucky hopefulness. A practical engine design is proposed which correlates to the definition of the type engine used. This engine integrates several system components into the engine structure. All conclusions relate to the classical Rankine Cycle.

Developments in convective heat transfer models featuring seamless and selected detail surfaces, employing electroless plating

Several model/instrument concepts employing electroless metallic skin were considered for improvement of surface condition, accuracy, and cost of contoured-geometry convective heat transfer models. A plated semi-infinite slab approach was chosen for development and evaluation in a hypersonic wind tunnel. The plated slab model consists of an epoxy casting containing fine constantan wires accurately placed at specified surface locations. An electroless alloy was deposited on the plastic surface that provides a hard, uniformly thick, seamless skin. The chosen alloy forms a high-output thermocouple junction with each exposed constantan wire, providing means of determining heat transfer during tunnel testing of the model. A selective electroless plating procedure was used to deposit scaled heatshield tiles on the lower surface of a 0.0175-scale shuttle orbiter model. Twenty-five percent of the tiles were randomly selected and plated to a height of 0.001-inch. The purpose was to assess the heating effects of surface roughness simulating misalignment of tiles that may occur during manufacture of the spacecraft.

Derivation of equations of motion for multi-blade rotors employing coupled modes and including high twist capability

The equations of motion are derived for a multiblade rotor. A high twist capability and coupled flatwise-edgewise assumed normal modes are employed instead of uncoupled flatwise - edgewise assumed normal models. The torsion mode is uncoupled. Support system models, consisting of complete helicopters in free flight, or grounded flexible supports, arbitrary rotor-induced inflow, and arbitrary vertical gust models are also used.

A fixed collector employing reversible vee-trough concentrator and a vacuum tube receiver for high temperature solar energy systems

A solar heat collection system employing non-tracking reflectors integrated with a fixed vacuum tube receiver which achieves modest year-round concentration (about 2) of the sunlight at low capital costs is discussed. The axis of the vee-trough reflector lies in a east-west direction and requires reversal of the reflector surfaces only twice a year without disturbing the receiver tubes and associated plumbing. It collects most of the diffuse flux. The vacuum tube receiver with selective absorber has no convection losses while radiation and conduction losses are minimal. Significant cost reductions are offered since the vee-trough can be fabricated from inexpensive polished or plastic reflector laminated sheet metal covering 2/3 of the collection area, and only about 1/3 of the area is covered with the more expensive vacuum tube receivers. Thermal and economic performance of the vee-trough vacuum tube system, year-round variation of the concentration factor, incident flux, useful heat per unit area at various operation temperatures and energy cost estimates are presented. The electrical energy cost is estimated to be 77 mills/kWh, and the system construction cost is estimated to be $1140/kWe.

A 230-GHz radiometer system employing a second-harmonic mixer

A radiometer system for use in the 1.3 mm region has been constructed and used for radio astronomical observations. A second-harmonic mixer employing a single Schottky diode downconverts the incident power to an IF frequency of about 1400 MHz. The measured double-sideband system noise temperature is 6000 K (noise figure = 13 dB) and the double-sideband mixer conversion loss is calculated to be 10 dB. The mixer is tunable over a range of at least 15 GHz.

Employing static excitation control and tie line reactance to stabilize wind turbine generators

An analytical representation of a wind turbine generator is presented which employs blade pitch angle feedback control. A mathematical model was formulated. With the functioning MOD-0 wind turbine serving as a practical case study, results of computer simulations of the model as applied to the problem of dynamic stability at rated load are also presented. The effect of the tower shadow was included in the input to the system. Different configurations of the drive train, and optimal values of the tie line reactance were used in the simulations. Computer results revealed that a static excitation control system coupled with optimal values of the tie line reactance would effectively reduce oscillations of the power output, without the use of a slip clutch.

The remote measurement of tornado-like flows employing a scanning laser Doppler system

The paper deals with a scanning laser Doppler velocimeter system employed in a test program for measuring naturally occurring tornado-like phenomena, known as dust devils. A description of the system and the test program is followed by a discussion of the data processing techniques and data analysis. The system uses a stable 15-W CO2 laser with the beam expanded and focused by a 12-inch telescope. Range resolution is obtained by focusing the optical system. The velocity of each volume of air (scanned in a horizontal plane) is determined from spectral analysis of the heterodyne signal. Results derived from the measurement program and data/system analyses are examined.

A packet telemetry system employing ARQ error control

A proposed packet telemetry system employing automatic retransmission request (ARQ) mode of error control is characterized. Limitations of the present multiplexing/demultiplexing approach are considered, and the use of the proposed system in near-earth satellites in the 1980s is suggested. Onboard processing and an adaptive multiplexing technique are described, as is an elastic buffer, required because the instantaneous data rate will be different from the telemetry transmission rate. The telemetry packets would be encoded into a powerful error-detection block code. A mechanism involving temporary buffering in a long shift register will permit retransmission request from the ground station for packets received in error. The ARQ mode of operation should ensure essentially error-free transmission at lower signal-to-noise ratios and at considerably higher transmission rates than are usually used.

Flow visualization studies of a general research fighter model employing a strake-wing concept at subsonic speeds

A systematic wind tunnel study was conducted in the Langley high-speed 7 by 10 foot tunnel to document, by oil-flow photographs, the surface flow patterns for configurations incorporating strake-wing geometries indicative of current and proposed maneuvering aircraft. The configurations employed combinations of strakes with reflexed planforms having exposed spans of 10 percent, 20 percent, and 30 percent of the reference wing span and wings with trapezoidal planforms having leading-edge sweep angles of approximately 30 deg, 44 deg, and 60 deg. Tests were conducted at Mach numbers of 0.3 and 0.5 and at angles of attack ranging from approximately 5 deg to 30 deg in 5 deg increments at 0 deg sideslip. The configurations incorporating the strake-wing geometries exhibited more organized flow patterns with smaller asymmetries to higher angles of attack than the corresponding configurations incorporating the wing-alone geometries did.

Fast-response free-running dc-to-dc converter employing a state-trajectory control law

A recently proposed state-trajectory control law for a family of energy-storage dc-to-dc converters has been implemented for the voltage step-up configuration. Two methods of realization are discussed; one employs a digital processor and the other uses analog computational circuits. Performance characteristics of experimental voltage step-up converters operating under the control of each of these implementations are reported and compared to theoretical predictions and computer simulations.

Electrophoretic fractional elution apparatus employing a rotational seal fraction collector

Electrophoretic fractional elution apparatus which has a column with a rotating seal joint is described. A thin jet of eluting buffer is directed across the lumen of the electrophoretic column in a direction perpendicular to that of electrophoretic migration. Either the content of the column is rotated with respect to the stationary jet, or the jet is rotated with respect to the column. The system may employ electrophoresis either in free solution or in packed columns.

The performance of solar thermal electric power systems employing small heat engines

The paper presents a comparative analysis of small (10 to 100 KWe) heat engines for use with a solar thermal electric system employing the point-focusing, distributed receiver (PF-DR) concept. Stirling, Brayton, and Rankine cycle engines are evaluated for a nominal overall system power level of 1 MWe, although the concept is applicable to power levels up to at least 10 MWe. Multiple concentrators are electrically connected to achieve the desired plant output. Best performance is achieved with the Stirling engine, resulting in a system Levelized Busbar Energy Cost of just under 50 mills/kWH and a Capital Cost of $900/kW, based on the use of mass-produced components. Brayton and Rankine engines show somewhat less performance but are viable alternatives with particular benefits for special applications. All three engines show excellent performance for the small community application.
