Electrical properties of the middle atmosphere

Probe techniques have been utilized extensively to measure middle atmospheric electrical properties such as the polar components of conductivity, ion mobility and density. The most variable of these parameters is conductivity, which is dependent on both charge mobility and concentration. Overall conductivity variations, attributable to different geophysical conditions, can exceed several orders of magnitude at some altitudes. Also, measurements of conductivity over the 20 to 90 km region indicate a general exponential increase with altitude, exceeding seven orders of magnitude during certain conditions. Gerdien condensers, on occasion, have measured very low-mobility positive ions in addition to the more commonly observed molecular species. These smaller mobility values appear to indicate the presence of very large ions at some altitudes, possibly charged particulates, having mass sizes greater than those identifiable by presently flown mass spectrometers. The presence of these large ions is of importance to middle atmospheric electrodynamics as a potential causal mechanism for measured large electric fields.

Optical and Electrical Properties of Reactively Sputtered TiN, ZrN, and HfN Thin Films

Thin films of titanium, zirconium, and hafnium nitride are prepared by DC magnetron reactive sputtering at room temperature on fused silica, optical glass, and silicon substrates. Deposition parameters are investigated in order to obtain stoichiometric films. The optical and electrical properties of the films as a function of nitrogen partial pressure are determined. The results show that an inverse correlation exists between the optical reflectance and the electrical resistivity of the films. Ellipsometer data for all three films show that their refractive index in the visible spectrum is decreased by increasing the film thickness while the extinction coefficient is unchanged. Thin films of TiN have the lowest room temperature resistivity relative to ZrN and HfN thin films.

Characterization and High Temperature Electrical Properties of Brazed Joints of La0.8Sr0.2CrO3 with Nickel and Nickel Alloys

This study investigates the high-temperature electrical properties and microstructural characteristics of brazed joints combining La₀.₈Sr₀.₂CrO₃ (LSC) with nickel and nickel-based alloys. Using nickel-based filler metals (NB LM and NB 130), the joints were tested in controlled atmospheres (95% N₂ and 5% H₂). Electrical resistivity was analyzed across a range of temperatures (25–727°C), and contact resistance was evaluated using a composite model. Results indicate that joint resistance decreases with increasing temperature, with optimal brazing achieved at 1160°C. Diffusion processes involving Si, Ni, O, and Sr were identified, with silicon oxide formation contributing to joint bonding.

High temperature electrical property measurements of ceramics

Emerging applications in energy and aerospace systems require high quality data on the high temperature electrical properties of ceramics, particularly oxides, to guide material selection, design, and modeling. This presentation demonstrates the functionality of a specially designed sample fixture that enables electrical measurements to be conducted up to temperatures as high as 1600°C. Utilizing the mismatch in the coefficient of thermal expansion between two materials, a purely mechanical method for establishing electrical contact in the van der Pauw geometry is used to measure the bulk resistivity of ceramic materials. Measurements conducted on a number of common high temperature materials will be presented, including 20 mol % Gd-doped cerium oxide. Measurements are performed using multiple techniques and compared to literature values finding excellent agreement. The approach described in this work enables the van der Pauw method to be applied to many ceramic materials over a wide range of temperatures and environments.

Surface electrical properties experiment study phase, volume 1

The evolution of a conceptual design of the flight hardware for the surface electrical properties experiment (SEP), the definition of requests for proposals, the analysis of proposals submitted by prospective flight hardware subcontractors, and recommendations for the flight configuration to be implemented are discussed. Initial efforts were made to assess the electromagnetic environment of the SEP experiment. An EMI receiver and tri-loop antenna were constructed and tests of opportunity were performed with a lunar roving vehicle (LRV). Initial analyses were made of data from these tests with support from this contract, analyses which were continued in depth under the hardware contract.

Surface morphologies and electrical properties of molecular beam epitaxial InSb and InAs(x)Sb(1-x) grown on GaAs and InP substrates

Surface morphologies and electrical properties of molecular beam epitaxial InSb and InAs(x)Sb(1-x) grown on GaAs and InP substrates are discussed. The crystals are all n-type at 300 K and lower temperatures. The surface morphology and electrical characteristics are strongly dependent on Sb(4)/In flux ratio and substrate temperature. The highest mobilities in InSb on InP are 70,000 at 300 K and 110,000 cm(2)/V.s (n=3x10(15) cm(-3)) at 77 K. The mobilities in the alloys also increase monotonically with lowering of temperature. Good quality InAs(x)Sb(1-x) was grown directly on InP substrates by molecular beam epitaxy.

Theoretical analyses on Apollo lunar surface electrical properties experiment transmitter antenna.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of the transmitter antenna of lunar surface electrical properties experiment. It is desirable to evaluate the current distribution, far-field radiation pattern and input impedance of the transmitter antenna in order to determine the electromagnetic sounding effects from the lunar subsurface. The analysis is based on the treatise of the long wire antenna with passive loadings. Both cases of the antenna placed in free space and in a dissipative medium are taken into consideration.-

Sensor discriminators and methods for detecting electrical property changes in a metal organic framework

A sensor discriminator for detecting a gaseous substance includes a power source, a discrimination module, a sensor simulator that simulates a metal organic framework under at least one simulation condition, a simulation circuitry electrically coupling the sensor simulator to the power source and the discrimination module, and a discriminator circuitry that electrically couples the power source and the discrimination module to a gas capture probe. The discrimination module compares a discrimination pulse and a simulation pulse from the power source after the discrimination pulse passes through a metal organic framework of the gas capture sensor and the simulation pulse passes through a simulation component of the sensor simulator. The discrimination module causes a discriminator output that includes the comparison of the discrimination pulse to the simulation pulse. An electrical property of the discrimination pulse depends on an electrical parameter of the metal organic framework that is augmented by the gaseous substance.

Optical and electrical properties of proton-implanted p -GaSb for electrical isolation

The effect of proton implantation as isolation implant and subsequent annealing on the optical absorption and electrical resistivity of low-bandgap p -GaSb is reported. The measured transmittance spectra indicates that implantation creates a distribution of energy levels extending into the bandgap. Electrical measurements show that the average sheet resistance of the implanted layer increases only by an order of magnitude from its pre-implantation value at a proton dose of ~10 13 cm -2 followed by 200 °C annealing. It is also shown that annealing reduces the implantation-induced optical absorption while still retaining a high electrical resistivity.
