AMPPED LDRD: Advanced Models of the Physics & Phenomena of Electrical Discharge.

This Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) project aimed at addressing an unmet need for physics-based models that enable prediction of electrical breakdown in the presence of high voltage gradients and real-world environments. This project focused on understanding coupled plasma-surface feedback phenomena critical to electrical discharge processes and design of breakdown voltages, breakdown times, and breakdown paths. New secondary electron emission and coupled plasma-surface measurement methods and models were developed. Highly reproducible discharge experiments were developed to provide current-voltage data as a function of time, and methods were developed to condition electrodes for predictable discharge. To assess plasma-surface feedback mechanisms, new surface physics capabilities, including measurement systems for local and global photoemission yield and ion-induced secondary electron emission yield were developed. Discharge models were developed to incorporate these yields for predicting discharge behavior to understand influence of surface physics on discharge current and time evolution, and methods to accelerate these simulations were demonstrated. A key finding was that the initiation process of a non-vacuum discharge appears highly dependent on photoemission at the cathode. Advanced diagnostics were developed, including spatial electrical field imaging, spectroscopy of plasmas, and high-speed imaging of discharge event s in metal and dielectric environments. These diagnostics and improved electrical models are a step toward enabling quantitative design margins, assurance of safety architectures, and implementation of novel materials and technologies for wide ranging energy and electronics applications.

Television image of a large upward electrical discharge above a thunderstorm system

A low light-level TV camera is used to obtain an unusual image of luminous electrical discharge over a thunderstorm 250 km from the observation site. The image is presented and the discharge in the image is described. It is suggested that the image is probably due to two localized electric charge concentrations at the cloud tops. The hazard of these discharges for aircraft and rocket launches is examined. Consideration is given to the possibility that these discharges may account for unexplained photometric observations of distant lightning events that show a low rise rate of the luminous pulse and no electromagnetic sferic pulse like that in cloud-to-earth lightning strokes. The photometric events of this type that occurred on September 22-23, 1989 during hurricane Hugo are noted.

Electric discharge initiation in water with gas bubbles: A time scale approach

High voltage nanosecond pulse driven electric discharges in de-ionized water with an argon bubble suspended between two electrodes were experimentally investigated. Two electrode configurations were used to temporally resolve the time scales of the discharge from the applied voltage rise time (7 ns), through the end of the first pulse (∼30 ns), and longer (>50 ns). We found that, in positive and negative applied voltage polarities, discharge initiates in the water at the tip of the anode. The discharge in the water rapidly extends (∼104 m/s) to the apex of the bubble and light emitted from inside the bubble begins to form. The steep rate of rise of the applied voltage (dV/dt<4 kV/ns) and the short time for the development of discharge in the water suggest that cavitation is a likely mechanism for discharge initiation and propagation in water. In addition, the short duration of the applied voltage pulse results in only a partial Townsend discharge inside the bubble.

Electrical discharges in the atmosphere of Venus

Data received from Venera 11 and 12 experiments involving the electrical activity of the atmosphere of Venus show that the electrical discharges occur in the cloud layer. Their energy is roughly the same as in terrestrial lightning, but with a pulse repetition frequency of the discharges which is much greater.

Electric discharge effects on a XeCl pumped S2 heat-pipe laser

It is shown that an electrical discharge can dissociate the higher-order sulfur molecules S(3-8) into dimers S2 and thus create the proper environment for efficient conversion of XeCl radiation at 308 nm to the blue-green. The use of a heat-pipe configuration greatly alleviates the technological problems.

A fatigue study of electrical discharge machine (EDM) strain-gage balance materials

A fatigue study was undertaken to determine how much electrical-discharge-machine (EDM) processing affected the fatigue life of balance materials: EDM and regular milling-machine (MM) samples were compared. Simulation of a typical balance stress configuration was devised for the fatigue testing in order to obtain results more closely related to balance situations. The fatigue testing of the EDM and MM specimens has indicated that the EDM technique does indeed reduce the fatigue life of 15-5PH steel, the first balance material tested. This conclusion was based on comparisons of the specimen fatigue lives with theoretical and manufacturer's data. Hence the EDM surface effects are detrimental to the fatigue life of this balance material.

Low-pressure electrical discharge experiment to simulate high-altitude lightning above thunderclouds

Recently, extremely interesting high-altitude cloud-ionosphere electrical discharges, like lightning above thunderstorms, have been observed from NASA's space shuttle missions and during airborne and ground-based experiments. To understand these discharges, a new experiment was conceived to simulate a thundercloud in a vacuum chamber using a dielectric in particulate form into which electrodes were inserted to create charge centers analogous to those in an electrified cloud. To represent the ionosphere, a conducting medium (metallic plate) was introduced at the top of the chamber. It was found that for different pressures between approximately 1 and 300 mb, corresponding to various upper atmospheric altitudes, different discharges occurred above the simulated thundercloud, and these bore a remarkable similarity to the observed atmospheric phenomena. At pressures greater than 300 mb, these discharges were rare and only discharges within the simulated thundercloud were observed. Use of a particulate dielectric was critical for the successful simulation of the high-altitude lightning.

Aspect dependence and frequency spectrum of electrical discharges on the P78-2 (SCATHA) satellite

The satellite charging at high altitudes (SCATHA) P78-2 satellite payload includes a charging electrical effects analyzer (CEEA) which measures the characteristics of electrical discharges in both the frequency and time domain. Pulses are detected in response to commands during electron and ion beam operations and during natural discharge events. The pulse analyzer measures the shape of pulses on four sensors and is the primary CEEA diagnostic for the natural discharges. Only five discharges were found in the data at a time when the pulse analyzer was in mode with sufficient time resolution to resolve the frequency components in the waveform.

Organic solids produced by electrical discharge in reducing atmospheres - Tholin molecular analysis

The complex dark brown solid of a class called tholins, produced on passage of an electrical discharge through a roughly equimolar mixture of methane and ammonia with 2.6% water vapor, is analyzed by vacuum pyrolysis followed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Pyrolyzates include a wide range of aliphatic and aromatic nitriles, alkanes, alkenes, aromatic hydrocarbons, pyrrole, and pyridine. This tholin is remarkably stable to 950 C. It and its degradation products are candidate constituents of planetary aerosols in the outer solar system and of the grains in the interstellar medium.

Study of VUV radiation of hybrid and standard X-pinches on KING electric discharge facility

The radiative characteristics of standard and hybrid X-pinches are studied in VUV range on the small-size KING electric discharge facility (200 kA, 190 ns, 45 kV) for the same initial conditions. In this work, studies were performed for different X-pinch materials. A comparative analysis of the VUV spectra was performed and the output energy of soft x-rays and VUV radiation was measured for standard and hybrid X-pinches.

Abiotic synthesis of purines and other heterocyclic compounds by the action of electrical discharges

The synthesis of purines and pyrimidines using Oparin-Urey-type primitive earth atmospheres has been demonstrated by reacting methane, ethane, and ammonia in electrical discharges. Adenine, guaine, 4-aminoimidazole-5-carboxamide (AICA), and isocytosine have been identified by UV spectrometry and paper chromatography as the products of the reaction. The total yields of the identified heterocyclic compounds are 0.0023 percent. It is concluded that adenine synthesis occurs at a much lower concentration of hydrogen cyanide than has been shown by earlier studies. Pathways for the synthesis of purines from hydrogen cyanide are discussed, and a comparison of the heterocyclic compounds that have been identified in meteorites and in prebiotic reactions is presented.

Electrical-Discharge-Machining Contamination Removal from Metal Additively Manufactured Components

The use of an electrochemical dissolution process is shown to remove the recast layer contamination from the surfaces of electrical-discharge-machining cut components, as well as the interior exposed surfaces of the structure. The solution chemistry, cell potential, and exposure time are all relevant interdependent variables. Optimization of the electrode geometry should be made for each type of component. For the case of Cu-Zn recast contamination of 300-series alloy components, surface composition analysis indicates that complete electrochemical dissolution is achieved using a dilute solution of nitric acid (HNO 3 ). For example, electrochemical dissolution of the Cu-Zn recast is accomplished at 1.2 V cell potential using a 20% nitric solution and an exposure time of 4 h. The use of a nitric acid bath was specifically chosen since it’s chemically compatible and will not degrade the host alloy or the component. In sum, an electrochemically driven dissolution process can be tailored to remove of the recast contamination without affecting the integrity of the host component structure and its dimensional tolerances.

N2O and CO production by electric discharge - Atmospheric implications

Enhanced levels of N2O and CO were measured in tropospheric air samples exposed to a 17,500-J laboratory discharge. These enhanced levels correspond to an N2O production rate of about 4 trillion molecules/J and a CO production rate of about 10 to the 14th molecules/J. The CO measurements suggest that the primary region of chemical production in the discharge is the shocked air surrounding the lightning channel, as opposed to the slower-cooling inner core. Additional experiments in a simulated Venus atmosphere (CO2 - 95%, N2 - 5%, at one atmosphere) indicate an enhancement of CO from less than 0.1 ppm prior to the laboratory discharge to more than 2000 ppm after the discharge. Comparison with theoretical calculations appears to confirm the ability of a shock-wave/thermochemical model to predict the rate of production of trace species by an electrical discharge.

Influences of Varied Electrical Discharge Machining Operations on Surface Conditions of Several Nickel-Based Superalloys

Nickel-based superalloys designed for use in gas turbine engines blades are difficult and expensive to properly machine without undue surface damage, due in part to their superior mechanical properties at high temperatures. Numerically controlled electrical discharge machining (EDM) has progressed to commonly be used as a machining process for initial sectioning, detailed roughing, and even some finishing operations. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of EDM on resulting surface conditions of superalloy 718 after slicing using typical rough, semi-finish, and finish condition sets with a typical wire EDM machine. Surface roughness, residual stress, and microstructures were compared for these conditions. The varied EDM conditions influenced surface roughness as intended. The residual stresses and surface roughness directly corresponding to the EDM steps were determined. While roughness decreased when progressing from rough to finish EDM conditions, tensile residual stresses unexpectedly increased. Brief assessments after EDM of two higher performance powder metallurgy disk superalloys ME209 and LSHR indicated this inverse relationship of roughness versus tensile residual stress was also present for these superalloys, where tensile residual stresses were significantly enhanced.
