Exceptional Points in Novel Multiscale Quantum-Nanoplasmonic Materials for Enhanced Sensing and Other Applications

Lossy quantum systems can display fascinating behaviors around singularities known as exceptional points in their complex eigenvalue spaces. Interest in these systems was ignited over two decades ago when Carl Bender and Stefan Boettcher—a LANL Director’s Postdoctoral Fellow at the time—pointed out that many features of conventional lossless quantum systems, such as real operator eigenvalues, could be recovered in lossy systems exhibiting parity- and time-reversal (ΡΤ) symmetry.

Coaxial Nanowire Electrodes Enable Exceptional Fuel Cell Durability

Polymer-electrolyte-membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) hold great promise for applications in clean energy conversion, but cost and durability continue to limit commercialization. This work presents a new class of catalyst/electrode architecture that does not rely on Pt particles or carbon supports, eliminating the primary degradation mechanisms in conventional electrodes, and thereby enabling transformative durability improvements. The coaxial nanowire electrode (CANE) architecture consists of an array of vertically aligned nanowires, each comprising an ionomer core encapsulated by a nanoscale Pt film. This unique design eliminates the triple-phase boundary and replaces it with two double-phase boundaries, increasing Pt utilization. It also eliminates the need for carbon support and ionomer binder, enabling improved durability and faster mass transport. Fuel cell membrane electrode assemblies based on CANEs demonstrate extraordinary durability in accelerated stress tests (ASTs), with only 2% and 5% loss in performance after 5000 support AST cycles and 30000 catalysts AST cycles, respectively. The high-power density and extremely high durability provided by CANEs can enable a paradigm shift from random electrodes based on unstable platinum nanoparticles dispersed on carbon to ordered electrodes based on durable Pt nanofilms, facilitating rapid deployment of fuel cells in transportation and other clean energy applications.

Exceptional Cycling Performance Enabled by Local Structural Rearrangements in Disordered Rocksalt Cathodes

The capacity of lithium transition-metal (TM) oxide cathodes is directly linked to the magnitude and accessibility of the redox reservoir associated with TM cations and/or oxygen anions, which traditionally decreases with cycling as a result of chemical, structural, or mechanical fatigue. Here, it is shown that a capacity increase over 125% can be achieved upon cycling of high-energy Mn- and F-rich cation-disordered rocksalt oxyfluoride cathodes. This study reveals that in Li 1.2 Mn 0.7 Nb 0.1 O 1.8 F 0.2 , repeated Li extraction/reinsertion utilizing Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ redox along with some degree of O-redox participation leads to local structural rearrangements and formation of domains with off-stoichiometry spinel-like features. The effective integration of these local “structure-domains” within the cubic disordered rocksalt framework promotes better Li diffusion and improves material utilization, consequently increased capacity upon cycling. Finally, this study provides important new insights into materials design strategies to further exploit the rich compositional and structural space of Mn chemistry for developing sustainable, high-energy cathode materials.

The Exceptional Diversity of Homoleptic Uranium–Methyl Complexes

Abstract Homoleptic σ‐bonded uranium–alkyl complexes have been a synthetic target since the Manhattan Project. The current study describes the synthesis and characterization of several unprecedented uranium–methyl complexes. Amongst these complexes, the first example of a homoleptic uranium–alkyl dimer, [Li(THF) 4 ] 2 [U 2 (CH 3 ) 10 ], as well as a seven‐coordinate uranium–methyl monomer, {Li(OEt 2 )Li(OEt 2 ) 2 UMe 7 Li} n were both crystallographically identified. The diversity of complexes reported herein provides critical insight into the structural diversity, electronic structure and bonding in uranium–alkyl chemistry.

Exceptional scalar theories in de Sitter space

The special galileon and Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) theories are effective field theories of a single scalar field that have many interesting properties in flat space. These theories can be extended to all maximally symmetric spaces, where their algebras of shift symmetries are simple. We study aspects of the curved space versions of these theories: for the special galileon, we find a new compact expression for its Lagrangian in de Sitter space and a field redefinition that relates it to the previous, more complicated formulation. This field redefinition reduces to the well-studied galileon duality redefinition in the flat space limit. For the DBI theory in de Sitter space, we discuss the brane and dilaton formulations of the theory and present strong evidence that these are related by a field redefinition. We also give an interpretation of the symmetries of these theories in terms of broken diffeomorphisms of de Sitter space.

Three exceptions to the Grossman-Nir bound

A bstract We show that the Grossman-Nir (GN) bound, Br( K L → $$ {\pi}^0\nu \overline{\nu} $$ π 0 ν ν ¯ ) ≤ 4 . 3 Br( K + → $$ {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu} $$ π + ν ν ¯ ), can be violated in the presence of light new physics with flavor violating couplings. We construct three sample models in which the GN bound can be violated by orders of magnitude, while satisfying all other experimental bounds. In the three models the enhanced branching ratio Br( K L → π 0 + inv) is due to K L → π 0 Φ 1, K L → π 0 Φ 1 Φ 1 , K L → $$ {\pi}^0{\psi}_1{\overline{\psi}}_1 $$ π 0 ψ 1 ψ ¯ 1 transitions, respectively, where Φ 1 ( ψ 1 ) is a light scalar (fermion) that escapes the detector. In the three models Br( K + → π + + inv) remains very close to the SM value, while Br( K L → π 0 + inv) can saturate the present KOTO bound. Besides invisible particles in the final state (which may account for dark matter) the models require additional light mediators around the GeV-scale.

On the conformal symmetry of exceptional scalar theories

The DBI and special galileon theories exhibit a conformal symmetry at unphysical values of the spacetime dimension. We find the Lagrangian form of this symmetry. The special conformal transformations are non-linearly realized on the fields, even though conformal symmetry is unbroken. Commuting the conformal transformations with the extended shift symmetries, we find new symmetries, which when taken together with the conformal and shift symmetries close into a larger algebra. For DBI this larger algebra is the conformal algebra of the higher dimensional bulk in the brane embedding view of DBI. For the special galileon it is a real form of the special linear algebra. We also find the Weyl transformations corresponding to the conformal symmetries, as well as the necessary improvement terms to make the theories Weyl invariant, to second order in the coupling in the DBI case and to lowest order in the coupling in the special galileon case.

Exceptionally high spallation strength for a high-entropy alloy demonstrated by experiments and simulations

High-entropy alloys are materials with an increasing number of technological applications. Amongst them, the Cantor alloy, FeMnCoCrNi, shows desirable mechanical properties at normal loading conditions. In this study we focus on the performance of the Cantor alloy at the ultra-high deformation rates of shock waves. We study shock-induced spallation using both experiments and atomistic simulations. Experimental loading is achieved using high power laser, with VISAR to obtain velocity profiles and spall strength, followed by transmission electron microscopy of the recovered samples. Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations of shock-induced spallation are compared with experiments. Both experiments and simulations show a high spall strength which would be beneficial for certain applications, with experiments giving ~8 GPa at ~10 7 s -1 and MD giving almost ~30 GPa at ~10 9 s -1 . The difference between experiments and simulations can be explained by the difference in strain rate. Post-mortem analysis of the experimental samples shows nanotwins near the spall plane, while MD simulations show a highly disordered region giving rise to void nucleation and spall during loading.

Redox-stable symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells with exceptionally high performance enabled by electrode/electrolyte diffuse interface

Here, in this study, we report a high performance and redox-stable symmetrical solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) based on (Ba 0.5 Sr 0.5 ) (Mo 0.1 Fe 0.9 )O 3-δ (BSMF) electrode and La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Ga 0.8 Mg 0.2 O 3-δ (LSGM) electrolyte. BSMF is able to operate both as anode and cathode. Excellent electrocatalytic activity has been achieved on BSMF towards hydrogen oxidation and oxygen reduction. Due to its closely matched lattice parameter to LSGM electrolyte, a unique diffuse interface is formed between BSMF and LSGM. Compared to a clean interface, e.g. BSMF/gadolinium doped ceria interface, this diffuse interface promotes the performance of BSMF electrode 1–1.8 times in 600–800 °C. Polarization resistance of the BSMF/LSGM specimen is as low as 0.047 and 0.007 Ωcm 2 in humidified H 2 and in air at 800 °C, respectively. On the BSMF/LSGM/BSMF symmetrical cell, a maximum power density of 2.28 W/cm 2 is achieved at 800 °C, the highest among with redox-stable ceramic electrodes to the best of our knowledge. Redox stability of this cell is confirmed. The role of anode and cathode is reversed back and forth in different operation modes. No apparent degradation is observed through 4 cycles within a 110 h operation period. These findings demonstrate that (Ba 0.5 Sr 0.5 ) (M o0.1 Fe 0.9 )O 3-δ coupled with LSGM electrolyte is an excellent choice to build a high performance, redox-stable SOFC.

Exceptional strength and wear resistance in an AA7075/TiB 2 composite fabricated via friction consolidation

The friction consolidation method successfully reinforced aluminum 7075 alloy (AA7075) with high-volume fractions (12 and 24 vol%) of titanium diboride (TiB 2 ) by high pressure and severe plastic deformation at elevated temperatures. The consolidated AMCs have a uniform dispersion of submicron- and micron-sized TiB 2 particles in the AA7075 matrix, with significant refinement of the matrix grain size and the particles. The addition of TiB 2 significantly increases hardness by up to 50 %, Young’s modulus by up to 62 %, and ultimate tensile strength by up to 28 % to 672 MPa, while reducing ductility by 80 %. Wear resistance of 7075/24 vol% TiB 2 improves seven-fold compared to baseline, making it comparable to that of carburized steels. Microstructure-based finite element modeling provided a theoretical strength limit of ~730 MPa for the composites and indicated that high triaxiality in conjunction with severe equivalent plastic strain in a narrow area between the TiB 2 particles led to early fracture initiations, limiting the ductility.
