The excitation of electronic transverse energy levels in an intense magnetic field

Observations of the X-ray pulsar Hercules X-1 show a line emission feature at about 60 keV, which has been interpreted as the fundamental electron cyclotron line in a magnetic field of around six trillion gauss. In this interpretation, the line radiation results from transitions between transverse energy levels, which are quantized by the field. The expected line luminosity from the excitation of these levels by protons which are falling into the polar cap of a neutron star are calculated. They are assumed to attain kinetic energies up to around 200 MeV, the gravitational potential energy at the surface. The cross sections for high energy Coulomb encounters between small pitch angle protons and electrons in a strong field are measured and used to calculate the energy loss rate of the infalling protons. This rate, together with the rate of elastic nuclear proton collisions, is then used to calculate the number of line photons an infalling proton can be expected to produce, directly or indirectly. The results are applied to Hercules X-1.

Tunable Electronic Energy Level Alignment and Exciton Diversity in Organic–Inorganic van der Waals Heterostructures

van der Waals stacking of two-dimensional (2D) materials offers a powerful platform for engineering material interfaces with tailored electronic and optical properties. While most van der Waals multilayers have featured inorganic monolayers, incorporating molecular monolayers introduces additional degrees of tunability and functionality. Here, in this study, we investigate hybrid bilayers composed of atomically thin perylene-based molecular crystals interfaced with monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), specifically MoS 2 and WS 2 . Using the ab initio many-body perturbation theory within the GW approximation and the Bethe-Salpeter equation approach, we predict emergent properties beyond those of the isolated constituent systems. Notably, we find substantial renormalization of monolayer molecular crystal band gap due to TMD-induced polarization. Furthermore, by varying the TMD monolayer, we demonstrate tuning of the energy level alignment of the bilayer and subsequent control over a diversity of lowest-energy excitons, which include strongly bound hybrid excitons and long-lived charge-transfer excitons. These findings establish organic-inorganic van der Waals heterostructures as a promising class of materials for tunable optoelectronic devices and quantum excitonic phenomena, expanding the design space for low-dimensional systems.

Accuracy of analytic energy level formulas applied to hadronic spectroscopy of heavy mesons

Linear and harmonic potential models are used in the nonrelativistic Schroedinger equation to obtain article mass spectra for mesons as bound states of quarks. The main emphasis is on the linear potential where exact solutions of the S-state eigenvalues and eigenfunctions and the asymptotic solution for the higher order partial wave are obtained. A study of the accuracy of two analytical energy level formulas as applied to heavy mesons is also included. Cornwall's formula is found to be particularly accurate and useful as a predictor of heavy quarkonium states. Exact solution for all partial waves of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for a harmonic potential is also obtained and compared with the calculated discrete spectra of the linear potential. Detailed derivations of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the linear and harmonic potentials are presented in appendixes.

Integrable multistate Landau–Zener models with parallel energy levels

In this paper, we discuss solvable multistate Landau–Zener (MLZ) models whose Hamiltonians have commuting partner operators with ~1/τ-time-dependent parameters. Many already known solvable MLZ models belong precisely to this class. We derive the integrability conditions on the parameters of such commuting operators, and demonstrate how to use such conditions in order to derive new solvable cases. We show that MLZ models from this class must contain bands of parallel diabatic energy levels. The structure of the scattering matrix and other properties are found to be the same as in the previously discussed completely solvable MLZ Hamiltonians.

Accurate energy levels for singly ionized platinum (Pt II)

New observations of the spectrum of Pt II have been made with hollow-cathode lamps. The region from 1032 to 4101 A was observed photographically with a 10.7-m normal-incidence spectrograph. The region from 2245 to 5223 A was observed with a Fourier-transform spectrometer. Wavelength measurements were made for 558 lines. The uncertainties vary from 0.0005 to 0.004 A. From these measurements and three parity-forbidden transitions in the infrared, accurate values were determined for 28 even and 72 odd energy levels of Pt II.

Modulating Energy Level on an A‐D‐A′‐D‐A‐Type Unfused Acceptor by a Benzothiadiazole Core Enables Organic Solar Cells with Simple Procedure and High Performance

Unfused‐ring acceptors (UFAs) have gained considerable research attention as they offer simple chemical structures through simplified synthesis methods, which would boost the commercialization of organic solar cells (OSCs). Recently, a new small molecule acceptor (SMA) named Y6 was reported, yielding high‐performance OSCs. Herein, the Y6‐like A‐DA′D‐A framework is developed to A‐D‐A′‐D‐A‐type backbone adopted in constructing UFAs. Two new Y6‐like UFAs are synthesized within four steps and the effect of noncovalent atoms at the central electron‐deficient core on material properties and device performances is studied. It is found that the introduction of fluorine atoms can bring larger red‐shift in the absorption spectra and better aggregation of the resulting UFA film states compared with those of oxygen atoms. Interestingly, the variations in the noncovalent interaction atoms induce different intermolecular charge transfer between donors and UFAs. When blended with another economical donor, PTQ10, F substitution at the benzothiadiazole ring is more effective than O substitution, leading to the increased short‐circuit current density ( J SC ) and higher efficiency of over 12%, among the best performances of UFA‐based OSCs. This contribution demonstrates the appropriate introduction of noncovalent interaction is a promising method for tuning energy levels, absorption, and aggregation of UFAs for high‐performance OSCs.

Spectral Signatures of a Negative Polaron in a Doped Polymer Semiconductor: Energy Levels and Hubbard U Interactions

The modern picture of negative charge carriers on conjugated polymers invokes the formation of a singly occupied (spin-up/spin-down) level within the polymer gap and a corresponding unoccupied level above the polymer conduction band edge. The energy splitting between these sublevels is related to on-site Coulomb interactions between electrons, commonly termed Hubbard U. However, spectral evidence for both sublevels and experimental access to the U value is still missing. Here, in this work, we provide evidence by n-doping the polymer P(NDI 2 OD-T 2 ) with [RhCp*Cp] 2 , [N-DMBI] 2 , and cesium. Changes in the electronic structure after doping are studied with ultraviolet photoelectron and low-energy inverse photoemission spectroscopies (UPS, LEIPES). UPS data show an additional density of states (DOS) in the former empty polymer gap while LEIPES data show an additional DOS above the conduction band edge. These DOS are assigned to the singly occupied and unoccupied sublevels, allowing determination of a U value of ~1 eV.

Rationalizing energy level alignment by characterizing Lewis acid/base and ionic interactions at printable semiconductor/ionic liquid interfaces

Charge transfer and energy conversion processes at semiconductor/electrolyte interfaces are controlled by local electric field distributions, which can be especially challenging to measure. Furthermore, we leverage the low vapor pressure and vacuum compatibility of ionic liquid electrolytes to undertake a layer-by-layer, ultra-high vacuum deposition of a prototypical ionic liquid EMIM + (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium) and TFSI – (bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)-imide) on the surfaces of different electronic materials. We consider a case-by-case study between a standard metal (Au) and four printed electronic materials, where interfaces are characterized by a combination of X-ray and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopies (XPS/UPS). For template-stripped gold surfaces, we observe through XPS a preferential orientation of the TFSI anion at the gold surface, enabling large electric fields (~10 8 eV m –1 ) within the first two monolayers detected by a large surface vacuum level shift (0.7 eV) in UPS.

Theoretical level energies, radiative lifetimes and transitions in W IX

The atomic states of the W IX (W{sup 8+}) tungsten ion lying below the W{sup 9+} ionisation threshold have been studied theoretically, employing the multiconfiguration Dirac–Hartree–Fock method with configuration interaction. The level electronic structures and their energies are presented. The electric dipole (E1), magnetic dipole (M1), electric quadrupole (E2), and magnetic quadrupole (M2) radiative transitions have been computed in order to calculate the radiative lifetimes of given states. Transition wavelengths, energies, and decay rates are also presented for selected high-intensity E1 transitions. The configuration interaction method was applied to estimate electron correlation effects. The aim of the present research was to fill a lack of atomic data for low-charged tungsten ions, which may be useful in low-temperature plasma diagnostics and may form the base for collisional–radiative modelling of spectra for low-charged tungsten ions.

Vibrational energy levels for CH4 from an ab initio potential

Many areas of astronomy and astrophysics require an accurate high temperature spectrum of methane (CH4). The goal of the present research is to determine an accurate ab initio potential energy surface (PES) for CH4. As a first step towards this goal, we have determined a PES including up to octic terms. We compare our results with experiment and to a PES based on a quartic expansion. Our octic PES gives good agreement with experiment for all levels, while the quartic PES only for the lower levels.

The effect of diet, exercise, and 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene on food intake, body composition, and carcass energy levels in virgin female BALB/c mice

The effects of diet, exercise, and 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA), a mammary-tumor carcinogen, on food intake, energy consumption, body weight, and body composition in virgin female BALB/c mice are investigated. Diet, exercise, and DMBA all had pronounced effects on energy consumption, which in turn affected body composition. These treatments may influence manifestations of breast cancer via their effects on body composition.

Relativistic MR-MP Energy Levels for K-like Fe

Relativistic Multi-Reference Møller-Plesset (MR-MP) many-body perturbation theory calculations are reported for the ground and excited states of Fe viii. Energies are provided for states coming from the configurations $3{s}^{m}3{p}^{n}3{d}^{p}4{l}^{q}$ (l = s, p, d, and f) with $m+n+p+q=9$, p ≤ 3, and q ≤ 1. The MR-MP results were compared with the recommended observed values in the CHIANTI-v8 database and with previous ab-initio calculations. The MR-MP calculations reproduce 90% of the available observed values within 3500 cm –1 . The previous accurate ab-initio calculations reproduce only 50% of the observed values within 3500 cm –1 . Furthermore, the electronic structure of Fe viii is very complex and our MR-MP results show that accurate calculations require the inclusion of not only 3s 2 –3d 2 , 3p 2 –3d 2 , and 3s3p–3d 2 promotions but also of all electron correlations via perturbation theory.

Energy Level Gradients from Surface to Bulk in Hybrid Metal-Halide Perovskite Thin Films

Variations in local strain, defect densities, and composition of hybrid metal-halide perovskites have been reported to create heterogeneous energy landscapes in thin films, which impact charge-carrier diffusion and recombination dynamics. Here, we employ one- and two-photon transient absorption spectroscopy to selectively probe the dynamics of charge carriers from surface and bulk regions of methylammonium lead bromide thin films. Differences in the transient absorption spectra indicate that an energy gradient of approximately 100 meV is formed between the higher band-gap surface and lower band-gap bulk regions. Thus, during their lifetime, photoexcited carriers move away from the surface to recombine in the bulk, where our experiments detect long-lived charge populations despite the significant band splitting that has conventionally been assumed to inhibit efficient radiative recombination. Supported by first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that bright emission can still arise from the bulk with states that occupy a wide range of momenta in the vicinity of the band extrema, which show strong dipole transitions. Our results report that photoexcitations in the hybrid perovskites avoid defect-rich surface regions, and that particularly strong emission is generated from accumulated excitation populations in the bulk. Spectroscopic analysis of transition state energy levels - Bending-rotational spectrum and lifetime analysis of H3 quasibound states

Converged quantum mechanical calculations of scattering matrices and transition probabilities are reported for the reaction of H with H2 with total angular momentum 0, 1, and 4 as functions of total energy in the range 0.85-1.15 eV on an accurate potential energy surface. The resonance structure is illustrated with Argand diagrams. State-to-state reactive collision delay times and lifetimes are presented. For J = 0, 1, and 4, the lowest-energy H3 resonance is at total energies of 0.983, 0.985, and 1.01 eV, respectively, with lifetimes of about 16-17 fs. For J = 1 and 4 there is a higher-energy resonance at 1.10-1.11 eV. For J = 1 the lifetime is about 4 fs and for J = 4 it is about 1 fs.

The calibration of photographic and spectroscopic films: The response of 2aO film to small dosages of alpha particles from 3/10th's rad to 8 rads at energy levels 153 MeV, 79 MeV and 47 MeV

The 2aO film, pre-exposed to a series of neutral density filters which on development under standard conditions will produce the standard H-D curve for that film, were then exposed to Alpha paricles with a dose range of 3/10ths rads to 8 rads while varying the energy of the particles using 153 MeV, 70 MeV, and 47 MeV, respectively. An analysis of the film shows that the 3/10th rad dose produces the lowest optical density changes at 70 MeV and 47 MeV. While the optical density readings for the darker patterns seem to oscillate and decrease when exposed to radiation dosages of 3/10th rads to 8 rads.

Energy Levels of C IV: The Polarization Method

In a previous publication [Can. J. Phys. 75, 11 (1997)] we calculated the generalized polarizabilities up to multipole order 3 as well as certain higher-order hyperpolarizabilities for two-electron atoms and ions of Z=2-6 and 10. In this paper we apply some of these results to calculate excited-state energies in three times ionized (lithium-like) carbon. For states with angular momentum L greater than or equal to 3 accurate results are obtained using an asymptotic polarizability expansion that includes nonadiabatic effects. Comparison is made with recent optical measurements, and a critical discussion of the correct form of the expansion is given. In addition, the possibility of very accurate measurements of the fine-structure splitting encourages us to present a table of such splittings to very high accuracy. An appendix contains similar results for lithium-like oxygen and neon ions.
