Energy dependent nuclear suppression from gluon saturation in exclusive vector meson production

We calculate exclusive J / ψ photoproduction at high energies in the color glass condensate approach. The results are compared to the center-of-mass energy dependent γ + A → J / ψ + A cross sections extracted from measurements in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. We predict strong saturation-driven nuclear suppression at high energies, while LHC data prefer even stronger suppression. We explore effects of nucleon shaped fluctuations and show that the most recent measurement of the | t | -differential incoherent J / ψ cross section prefers large event-by-event fluctuations of the nucleon substructure in heavy nuclei, comparable to that found for a free proton. Time and energy dependence of heavy ion abundances in solar flare energetic particle events

Examples are presented of the time and energy dependence of the abundances and spectra of the major heavy ions He, C, O and Fe during solar flare events, taken from a survey using the UMD/MPI ULET telescope on IMP-8 during 1973-1977. In some cases, time variations were found in the O/He, O/C and Fe/O ratios which appear to be inconsistent with models based solely on rigidity dependent propagation in the interplanetary medium.

Beam-energy dependence of the production of light nuclei in Au + Au collisions

We study in the coalescence model the collision energy dependence of (anti-)deuteron and (anti- )triton production in the most central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} $ = 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV. The needed phase-space distribution of nucleons at the kinetic freeze-out is generated from a new 3D hybrid dynamical model (iEBE-MUSIC) by using a smooth crossover equation of state (EoS) without a QCD critical point. Our model calculations predict that the coalescence parameters of (anti-)deuteron (B 2 (d) and B 2 ($\bar{d}$)) decrease monotonically as the collision energy increases, and the light nuclei yield ratio N t N p /$Nd^{2}_{d}$ remains approximately a constant with respect to the collision energy. These calculated observables fail to reproduce the non-monotonic behavior of the corresponding data from the STAR Collaboration. Without including any effects of the critical point in our model, our results serve as the baseline predictions for the yields of light nuclei in the search for the possible QCD critical points from the experimental beam energy scan of heavy ion collisions.

Time and energy dependence of the cosmic ray gradient in the outer heliosphere

Pioneers 10 and 11, now 35 and 18 AU from the Sun, continue to extend our knowledge of the spatial dependence of cosmic ray intensities in the heliosphere. Radial gradients measured from these spacecraft by UCSD detectors which have integral energy responses above thresholds of 80 and 500 MeV/nucleon are reported. An average gradient of 2%/AU typifies the data set as a whole, but there are time and energy dependences that deviate from this value. With operating lifetimes of 13 and 12 years, respectively, for the two spacecraft, the time dependence was followed for over a solar cycle. The higher energy channel shows less modulation on all time scales. At the start of the present cycle, the gradient is lower than the average value during the last solar cycle.

Model study of the energy dependence of the correlation between anisotropic flow and the mean transverse momentum in Au + Au collisions

A hybrid model that employs the hadron-string transport model UrQMD and the (3+1)-dimensional relativistic viscous hydrodynamic code vHLLE, is used to investigate the beam energy dependence of the correlation coefficient ρ(v$^{2}_{2}$,[p T ]) between the average transverse momentum [p T ] of hadrons emitted in an event and the square of the anisotropic flow coefficient v$^{2}_{2}$. For Au+Au collisions, the model predicts characteristic patterns for the energy and event-shape dependence of the variances for [p T ] and v$^{2}_{n}$ [Var([p T ] and Var(v$^{2}_{2}$)], and the covariance of v$^{2}_{n}$ and [p T ][cov(v$^{2}_{2}$,[p T ])], consistent with the attenuation effects of the specific shear viscosity η/s. Here in contrast, ρ(v$^{2}_{2}$,[p T ]) is predicted to be insensitive to the beam energy but sensitive to the initial-state geometry of the collisions. These observations suggest that a precise set of measurements for Var([p T ]), Var(v$^{2}_{2}$), cov(v$^{2}_{2}$,[p T ]) and ρ(v$^{2}_{2}$,[p T ]) as a function of beam energy and event shape, could serve to constrain better the eccentricities and their fluctuations over the entire span of beam energies, and consequently aid precision extraction of the temperature and baryon chemical-potential dependence of η/s from the wealth of Au+Au data obtained in the RHIC beam energy scan.

Collision-energy dependence of the Breit-Wheeler process in heavy-ion collisions and its application to nuclear charge radius measurements

The collision energy dependence of the cross section and the transverse momentum distribution of dielectrons from the Breit-Wheeler process in heavy-ion collisions are computed in the lowest-order QED and found to be sensitive to the nuclear charge distribution and the infrared divergence of the ultra-Lorentz-boosted Coulomb field. Within a given experimental kinematic acceptance, the cross section is found to increase while the pair transverse momentum ($\sqrt{\langle{p^2_T}\rangle}$) decreases with increasing beam energy. We demonstrate that the transverse-momentum component of Weizsäcker-Williams photons is due to the finite extent of the charge source and electric field component in the longitudinal direction. We further clarify the connection between the nuclear charge distribution and the kinematics of produced e + e - from the Breit-Wheeler process, and propose a criterion for the validity of the Breit-Wheeler process in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Following this approach we demonstrate that the experimental measurements of the Breit-Wheeler process in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions can be used to quantitatively constrain the nuclear charge radius. The extracted parameters show sensitivity to the impact parameter dependence, and can be used to study the initial-state and final-state effects in hadronic interactions.

Energy dependence and temporal evolution of the He-3/He-4 ratios in heavy-ion-rich energetic particle events

A study is presented of the energy dependence of the He-3/He-4 between 0.44 and 4.1 MeV per nucleon for six heavy-ion-rich events observed in 1974 and 1976. The observations were made using the low-energy dE/dx vs E Ultralow-Energy Particle telescope on IMP 8. It was found that all selected heavy-ion-rich events are also enriched in He-3: that the He-3/He-4 ratio decreases with decreasing energies; and that a rapid temporal evolution of the He-3/He-4 and the Fe/(H + He) ratios is strongly correlated during one event with the maximum value at the onset. These results are analyzed in terms of a model based on the preferential injection of He-3 and Fe resulting from turbulent ion heating and subsequent Fermi acceleration.

Energy-Dependent $π^+π^+π^+$ Scattering Amplitude from QCD

Focusing on three-pion states with maximal isospin ($π^+π^+π^+$), we present the first nonperturbative determination of an energy-dependent three-hadron scattering amplitude from first-principles QCD. The calculation combines finite-volume three-hadron energies, extracted using numerical lattice QCD, with a relativistic finite-volume formalism, required to interpret the results. Furthermore, to fully implement the latter, we solve integral equations that relate an intermediate three-body K matrix to the physical three-hadron scattering amplitude. The resulting amplitude shows rich analytic structure and a complicated dependence on the two-pion invariant masses, represented here via Dalitz-like plots of the scattering rate.

Irradiation-energy Dependence on the Spectral Changes of Hydrous C-Type Asteroids Based on 4kev and 20kev He Exposure Experiments of Murchison Cm Chondrite

C-type asteroid 162173 Ryugu was observed by remote sensing apparatus onboard Hayabusa2 spacecraft and found to be very dark object whose reflectance is (1.60 ± 0.15) % at 0.55μm and showed a small 2.7μm absorption band indicative of phyllosilicates. The optical navigation camera detected color variations of Ryugu’s surface in the wavelength range from 0.4 to 0.95μm: Bluer spectra are ob-served at both poles and on the equatorial ridge, both of which are topographic highs and thus may be fresh material exposed by gradual erosion. On the other hand, many locations at middle-latitude areas exhibit redder and darker colors. Similar color variations are also detected in the near-infrared wavelength range. These observations suggest that a surface-correlated process is responsible for the color variation, most prob-ably from blue to red, but the mechanism for the change is not yet identified. Space weathering is one possible mechanism responsible for the color variation, but the spectral changes of C-type asteroids from space weathering are far from being fully understood. Past experimental studies using hydrous carbonaceous chondrites such as Murchison and Tagish Lake show that He exposure (simulating solar wind irradiation) changes spectra to bluer and brighter. Recently our He exposure experiments indicate that spectral changes depend on physical properties such as porosity of exposed material. In this study, we per-formed further He exposure experiments using Murchison CM chondrite in order to understand energy dependence on the spectral changes. We found that He energy is a critical parameter, as well as physical properties of the samples, that affects spectral changes of space weathering of hydrated C-type asteroids.

Studies of the Energy Dependence of Diboson Polarization Fractions and the Radiation-Amplitude-Zero Effect in WZ Production with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter presents the first study of the energy dependence of diboson polarization fractions in WZ → ℓνℓ'ℓ'(ℓ,ℓ'=e,μ) production. The dataset used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector. Two fiducial regions with an enhanced presence of events featuring two longitudinally polarized bosons are defined. A nonzero fraction of events with two longitudinally polarized bosons is measured with an observed significance of 5.3 standard deviations in the region with 100< $p$$^{Z}_{T}$ ≤ 200 GeV, and 1.6 standard deviations in the region with $p$$^{Z}_{T}$ > 200 GeV, where $p$$^{Z}_{T}$ is the transverse momentum of the Z boson. This Letter also reports the first study of the radiation-amplitude-zero effect. Events with two transversely polarized bosons are analyzed for the Δ Y (ℓ W Z ) and Δ Y ( WZ ) distributions defined respectively as the rapidity difference between the lepton from the W boson decay and the Z boson and the rapidity difference between the W boson and the Z boson. Significant suppression of events near zero is observed in both distributions. Unfolded Δ Y (ℓ W Z ) and Δ Y ( WZ ) distributions are also measured and compared to theoretical predictions.

Energy dependence of \(\phi \) meson production at forward rapidity in pp collisions at the LHC

The production of Φ mesons has been studied in pp collisions at LHC energies with the ALICE detector via the dimuon decay channel in the rapidity region 2.5 < y < 4. Measurements of the differential cross section d 2 σ / dydpT are presented as a function of the transverse momentum (p T ) at the center-of-mass energies √s = 5.02, 8 and 13 TeV and compared with the ALICE results at midrapidity. The differential cross sections at √s = 5.02 and 13 TeV are also studied in several rapidity intervals as a function of p T , and as a function of rapidity in three p T intervals. A hardening of the p T -differential cross section with the collision energy is observed, while, for a given energy, p T spectra soften with increasing rapidity and, conversely, rapidity distributions get slightly narrower at increasing p T . The new results, complementing the published measurements at √s = 2.76 and 7 TeV, allow one to establish the energy dependence of Φ meson production and to compare the measured cross sections with phenomenological models. None of the considered models manages to describe the evolution of the cross section with p T and rapidity at all the energies.

The energy dependence and surface morphology of Kapton (trademark) degradation under atomic oxygen bombardment

Data from laboratory simulations and from samples returned from STS-8 are used to derive the energy dependence of the mass loss rate of Kapton under atomic oxygen bombardment and to discuss the development of surface structure and its effect on erosion rates. It is concluded that all the laboratory data from discharge and flow tubes and from accelerated beams, along with the orbital data from STS-3 through STS-8, can be accommodated by a rate of mass loss that varies with impact energy normal to the surface. It is hypothesized that increases of mass loss rate with exposure time may be due to trapping of the incoming atoms by the surface structure which develops.

Energy-dependent effects of scattering atmospheres on X-ray pulsar pulse profiles

We propose that radiation-supported scattering atmospheres near accreting X-ray pulsars (XRPs) can explain energy-dependent features observed in the pulse profiles of 4U 1626-67, 4U 1538-52, 4U 1907+09 and Vela X-1. These atmospheres provide a physical model for the phenomenological annular emitting regions employed by Leahy to fit X-ray pulsar pulse profiles. We examine the effects of the scattering atmospheres under the assumptions that stable, optically thick atmospheres exist in a region where the optically thin resonant radiation force exceeds the force of gravity on ionized hydrogen. We predict that less complex pulse profiles will be observed at higher photon energies because the scattering atmospheres, which are supported by resonant Compton radiation pressure, become transparent to photons with energies greater than the cyclotron energy at the neutron star surface.

Energy dependent delay measurements of quasi-periodic oscillations in low-mass X-ray binaries

Results of Monte Carlo simulations of the Comptonization of photons in a finite spherical Comptonizing cloud are presented. The energy dependence of the arrival times of the Comptonized photons is very different for different input photon spectra. If the delays observed in the high-frequency QPO of Cyg X-2 and GX5-1 are the result of Comptonization, multichannel time-delay measurements may constrain the energy of the input photons and thus provide important information on the accretion process in low-mass X-ray binaries.
