The pressure fluctuations around an ellipsoidal asperity tip at the inlet region of an elastohydrodynamic contact is determined by solving a perturbed Reynolds equation assuming that the asperity shape is unaffected by the perturbed pressure. Results are presented as the amplitude of the perturbed pressure as a function of ellipticity ratio, maximum Hertzian pressure, nominal EHD film thickness, asperity size, asperity height, and pressure viscosity coefficient. For the case of simple sliding between a smooth surface and a stationary asperity, a comparison is also made between the results for large ellipticity ratios and the pressure fluctuations obtained by using a previous line contact EHD analysis for a two-dimensional asperity ridge. The agreement is found to be close for moderate Hertzian pressure and relatively thick EHD film thickness.
Radial velocity curves for the more massive components of binaries with extreme mass ratios can show a large distortion due to tides, as first recognized by Sterne. Binaries in which the effect is large should be rare because nearly all such binaries would be in the rapid phase of mass transfer. However, the optical counterparts of some X-ray binaries may show the effect, which would then serve as a new means of extracting considerable information from the observations. The essential parts of the computational procedure are given. Light curves for ellipsoidal variables with extreme mass ratios were also computed, and were found to be less sinusoidal than those with normal mass ratios.
All of the phenomena which influence the propagation of radiowaves at frequencies above 10 GHz (attenuation, depolarization, scintillation) can by intensified by parameters directly derived from a solution of individual scatter, naturally in addition to be meteorological elements which characterize the physical medium. The diffusion caused by rainy precipitation was studied using Mie's algorithm for rain composed of spherical drops, and Oguchi's algorithm for rain composed of drops in an ellipsoidal form with axes of rotational symmetry arrange along the vertical line of a generic reference point. Specific phase displacement and attenuation along the principal planes, propagation of radiowaves in generic polarization, and propagation with inclined axes are also considered.
