ECP Milestone Deliverable Memo 2.3.1.04.15

The DARMA many-task framework provides asynchronous communication and load balancing functionality. This functionality is embedded in standard , modern C++ through the use of the template wrapper classes similar to futures. DARMA codes previously could not interoperate with MPI. A new C++ interface and extended semantics now allow quiescence of DARMA kernels and transfer of data ownership back into MPI, allowing 1) isolated DARMA kernels to be inserted in a larger MPI code or 2) reuse of MPI libraries like solvers within a DARMA application.

ATDM report to ECP AD FY18Q4

A comprehensive V&V study of hypersonic flow in SPARC validated against several experiments was produced. This work was successfully completed as an official ASC L2 milestone with an external review of the team's work. Our work has provided a basis for utilizing SPARC as credible analysis tool for hypersonic re-entry flows. The V&V process has been exercised in full breadth including applicable frameworks, professional standards, code and solution verification, calibration, sensitivity analysis and parametric uncertainty.

ATDM ASD report to ECP FY18Q4

Kokkos and DARMA teams worked together on several significant proposals for the C++ standards body, including the MDSpan and Exectutors proposals. This work has potential for long-term impact into the language standard reflecting core abstractions needed for our HPC programming and development efforts. Kokkos team collaborating with AMD via the Path Forward effort. This is advancing Kokkos support for [AMD] backends, necessary for future exascale/HPC architectures.

ECP STPR04 Milestone 5 Report

This report documents the completion of milestone STPRO4-5 Kokkos interoperability with general SIMD types to force vectorization on ATS-1. The Kokkos team worked with application developers to enable the utilization of SIMD intrinsics, which allowed up to 3.7x improvement of the affected kernels on ATS-1 in a proxy application. SIMD types are now deployed in the production code base.

ECP Milestone Memo WBS 2.3.4.13 ECP/VTK-m FY19Q1 [MS-19/01-03] ZFP / Release / Clip STDA05-17

The STDA05-17 milestone comprises the following 3 deliverables. VTK-m Release 2 We will provide a release of VTK-m software and associated documentation. The source code repository will be tagged at a stable state, and, at a minimum, tarball captures of the source code will be made available from the web site. A version of the VTK-m User's Guide documenting this release will also be made available. Productionize zfp compression The "ZFP: Compressed Floating-Point Arrays" project (WBS 1.3.4.13) is creating an implementation of ZFP compression in VTK-m. Their implementation will be focused on operating in CUDA. The VTK-m project will assist by generalizing the implementation to other devices (such as multi-core CPUs). We will also assist in productionizing the code such that it can be used by external projects and products. Clip Clip operations intersect meshes with implicit functions. It is the foundation of spatial subsetting algorithms, such as "box," and the foundation of data-based subsetting, such as "isovolume." The algorithm requires considering thousands of possible cases, and is thus quite difficult to implement. This milestone will implement clipping to be sufficient for Visit's and ParaView's needs.

ECP Milestone Memo WBS 2.3.4.13 ECP/VTK-m FY18Q4 [MS-18/09-10] Dynamic Types / Rendering Topologies STDA05-16

The STDA05-16 milestone comprises the following 3 distinct deliverables. OpenMP VTK-m currently supports three types of devices: serial CPU, TBB, and CUDA. To run algorithms on multicore CPU-type devices (such as Xeon and Xeon Phi), TBB is required. However, there are known issues with integrating a software product using TBB with another one using OpenMP. Therefore, we will add an OpenMP device to the VTK-m software. When engaged, this device will run parallel algorithms using OpenMP directives. This will mesh more nicely with other code also using OpenMP. Rendering Topological Entities VTK-m currently supports surface rendering by tessellation of data structures, and rendering the resulting triangles. We will extend current functionality to include face, edge, and point rendering. Better Dynamic Types Impl For the best efficiency across all platforms, VTK-m algorithms use static typing with C++ templates. However, many libraries like VTK, ParaView, and Visit use dynamic types with virtual functions because data types often cannot be determined at compile time. We have an interface in VTK-m to merge these two typing mechanisms by generating all possible combinations of static types when faced with a dynamic type. Although this mechanism works, it generates very large executables and takes a very long time to compile. As we move forward, it is clear that these problems will get worse and become infeasible at exascale. We will rectify the problem by introducing some level of virtual methods, which require only a single code path, within VTK-m algorithms. This first milestone produces a design document to propose an approach to the new system.

ECP FY19 AD Project Review [Slides]

Industry seems to have the isolated-single-turbine-in-a-flat-field problem "solved". Wide-scale deployment and cost competitiveness require large wind plants — tens to hundreds of turbines in complex terrain. Predictive wind farm simulation is an exascale problem.

Demonstration and performance testing of extreme-resolution simulations with static meshes on Summit (CPU & GPU) for a parked-turbine configuration and an actuator-line (mid-fidelity model) wind farm configuration (ECP-Q4 FY2020 Milestone Report)

The goal of the ExaWind project is to enable predictive simulations of wind farms comprised of many megawatt-scale turbines situated in complex terrain. Predictive simulations will require computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations for which the mesh resolves the geometry of the turbines and captures the rotation and large deflections of blades. Whereas such simulations for a single turbine are arguably petascale class, multi-turbine wind farm simulations will require exascale-class resources. The primary physics codes in the ExaWind simulation environment are Nalu-Wind, an unstructured-grid solver for the acoustically incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, AMR-Wind, a block-structured-grid solver with adaptive mesh refinement capabilities, and OpenFAST, a wind-turbine structural dynamics solver. The Nalu-Wind model consists of the mass-continuity Poisson-type equation for pressure and Helmholtz-type equations for transport of momentum and other scalars. For such modeling approaches, simulation times are dominated by linear-system setup and solution for the continuity and momentum systems. For the ExaWind challenge problem, the moving meshes greatly affect overall solver costs as reinitialization of matrices and recomputation of preconditioners is required at every time step. The choice of overset-mesh methodology to model the moving and non-moving parts of the computational domain introduces constraint equations in the elliptic pressure-Poisson solver. The presence of constraints greatly affects the performance of algebraic multigrid preconditioners.

Performance Assessment of AFQMC Implementation (ECP Milestone 5.2 Report)

The auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo algorithm in QMCPACK was ported to run on AMD GPUs using HIP. Initial performance measurements on early access hardware indicate a 4x slowdown compared to NVIDIA V100s. The slowdown was determined to be a result of suboptimal ROCM libraries for small matrix sizes coupled with some poorly performing hipified CUDA kernels. Through a preliminary analysis of HIP kernel performance we determined a strategy for pro ling and tuning kernels. We request that ROCM libraries are optimized for smaller problem sizes particularly for batched operations.

Towards Use of Mixed Precision in ECP Math Libraries [Exascale Computing Project]

The use of multiple types of precision in mathematical software has the potential to increase its performance on new heterogeneous architectures. The xSDK project focuses both on the investigation and development of multiprecision algorithms as well as their inclusion into xSDK member libraries. This report summarizes current efforts on including and/or using mixed precision capabilities in the math libraries Ginkgo, heFFTe, hypre, MAGMA, PETSc/TAO, SLATE, SuperLU, and Trilinos, including KokkosKernels. It contains both numerical results from libraries that already provide mixed precision capabilities, as well as descriptions of the strategies to incorporate multiprecision into established libraries.
