CFD Modeling of an 81" Single Slope Barrier Wall Drainage Window for on Grade and Sag Conditions

The main goal of this study is to design a drainage window in an 81" single slope barrier wall for on-grade and sag conditions that could replace the standard ODOT I-3 barrier catch basin. The ODOT design guidelines are as follows: a) Examine configurations of the opening to the flume behind the wall under the wall section to maximize conveyance of flow to a roadside ditch section. b) Examine window lengths and configurations to maximize hydraulic efficiency on a grade up to an absolute maximum window length of 20 ft. c) Use a minimum opening height of 4 in. and consider tapering to an increased height at the outlet to the flume to reduce the potential for debris clogging beneath the barrier section. On-grade locations are analyzed for longitudinal slope up to 5% and spread up to 10 ft. Sag locations, represented by pavement at zero longitudinal slope, are analyzed for water depths up to 18 in. The roadway cross section consists of a 10-ft shoulder at a 4.0% cross slope and pavement at a 1.6% cross slope. All surfaces are represented with Manning’s n = 0.015. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used to perform the analysis. The modeling approach follows previous studies by the authors. The new design is similar to a slotted inlet: a rectangular opening cut into the bottom of a barrier (e.g., a temporary barrier or single slope barrier wall), which typically has a uniform cross section. Findings from laboratory tests of flow under Florida DOT barrier walls were used for additional validation of the modeling approach used in this study.

Validating the Funnel, Filter Paper, and Drainage Method for Maximum Water Holding Capacity Over a Wide Range of Soil Textures

The data provided includes the results of maximum water holding capacity using the funnel, filter paper, and drainage (FFPD) method, as well as soil water retention curves generated from the water desorption method (via pressure cells) for a full range of soil textures. It will also include data from sensitivity trials to test readily available materials and varying conditions the FFPD method could be expanded to use for more accessibility to community scientists. The format will be in data tables.

Systems and processes for recovery of high-grade rare earth concentrate from acid mine drainage

In one aspect, the disclosure relates to a continuous process for treating acid mine drainage while simultaneously recovering a high-grade rare earth preconcentrate suitable for extraction of commercially valuable rare earth oxides. In a further aspect, the preconcentrate is from about 0.1% to 5% rare earth elements on a dry weight basis. In another aspect, the disclosure relates to a method for processing the preconcentrate to generate a pregnant leach solution that does not form gels or emulsions and is suitable for processing via solvent extraction. In another aspect, the disclosure relates to a system and plant for carrying out the disclosed process. In still another aspect, the disclosure relates to a composition containing rare earth elements produced by the process disclosed herein. This abstract is intended as a scanning tool for purposes of searching in the particular art and is not intended to be limiting of the present disclosure.

Drainage network response to Arctic warming

Rapid Arctic warming may increase erosion and stream channel formation, which alters the flux of sediments, carbon, and nutrients in these sensitive ecosystems. Yet, understanding landscape change is hampered by a lack of predictive tools applicable to permafrost settings.

Experimental investigation of the influence of drainage condition on change in saturation of sheared sand

Here, this paper investigates the validity of the interpretation of results from testing saturated axisymmetric triaxial compression (ATC) sand specimens utilising three-dimensional (3D) synchrotron micro-computed tomography (SMT) to probe localised events that are completely missed or misinterpreted when analysing ATC measurements based on global standard measurements. Drained and undrained experiments were conducted at low and high back-pressures (BPs) coupled with multiple in situ 3D SMT to acquire high-resolution scans of the specimens at different axial strains. Specimens tested under low BP exhibited a large pore air volume change, which was not detected by the pump system that represents standard volume measurement. The increase in air volume caused a significant reduction in the degree of saturation leading to a possible transition from saturated to partially saturated constitutive behaviour. Undrained experiments exhibited a significant volume change contrary to the assumption of negligible volumetric strain for saturated undrained experiments. Air bubbles within the shear band for drained and undrained low-BP specimens showed opposite capillary pressure responses, increased for drained and decreased for undrained cases, due to the variation in the mechanism by which each of the two experiments predominantly counters the volume expansion within the shear band.
