Multiphase equation of state for Ta 2 O 5

A new equation of state for Ta 2 O 5 is presented. The EOS is constructed using the OpenSesame software and is referred to as SESAME 3530. The EOS uses a combination of density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental data. DFT calculations include cold curves and phonons of the solid phases, as well as DFT-based molecular dynamics simulations of the liquid phase. Experimental data includes isobaric, diamond anvil cell, and porous shock Hugoniot data. To fit the data, we create a multiphase EOS consisting of two solid phases and the liquid. Overall agreement with experimental data is shown, and we provide some suggestions for future experiments that could improve our knowledge of the phase diagram.

Cumulus convection as observed from an airborne infrared radiometer

The implementation of high resolution passive radiative remote sensing of the cloudiness volume in the atmospheric window between 10.5-12.5 microns is described. Airborne radiometers, the NASA/Cloud Top Scanner, were used to obtain radiances during several passages over two merging cumulus clouds, with the data being converted into equivalent blackbody temperatures. Data were also gathered in the 0.55-0.70 micron visible bands as part of the SESAME-79 experiment. The number of points observed in the IR channel were adjusted to account for the viewing angle and areal extents were calculated. A relationship was assumed to exist between the brightness temperatures of the cloud surface and the level of cloudiness at a given atmospheric altitude. Further measurements with lidar scans are indicated in order to reduce the error levels associated with the method.

An analysis of the AVE-SESAME I period using statistical structure and correlation functions

Structure and correlation functions are used to describe atmospheric variability during the 10-11 April day of AVE-SESAME 1979 that coincided with the Red River Valley tornado outbreak. The special mesoscale rawinsonde data are employed in calculations involving temperature, geopotential height, horizontal wind speed and mixing ratio. Functional analyses are performed in both the lower and upper troposphere for the composite 24 h experiment period and at individual 3 h observation times. Results show that mesoscale features are prominent during the composite period. Fields of mixing ratio and horizontal wind speed exhibit the greatest amounts of small-scale variance, whereas temperature and geopotential height contain the least. Results for the nine individual times show that small-scale variance is greatest during the convective outbreak. The functions also are used to estimate random errors in the rawinsonde data. Finally, sensitivity analyses are presented to quantify confidence limits of the structure functions.

The Preston-Tonks-Wallace (PTW) Model Parameterization of Al-6061 With Sesame EoS

In this report, we make a recommendation for the PTW model parameters for an aluminum alloy, Al 6061-T6 based on the quasi-static and split-Hopkin pressure bar experimental data, provided by the experimentalists in MST-8, LANL. Al 6061 is an aluminum alloy with magnesium and silicon, and the temper designation T6 means it has gone through heat treatment followed by quenching, cooling, and aging. (Note that T4 is naturally aged and T6, artificially.) We adopted the shear modulus and melt curve models that are necessary to parameterize the PTW model, from Sesame EoS. In the lack of those information on this particular aluminum alloy, we used what is available for pure aluminum.

Pressure-temperature equation of state of Al 2 ⁢O 3 up to 14 Mbar and 40 kK

Sapphire (Al 2 ⁢O 3 ), known for its remarkable incompressibility at ambient conditions, plays a pivotal role in both static and dynamic compression research. Accurately characterizing its equation of state (EoS) is essential for these applications. Here, we present a complete Hugoniot of Al 2 ⁢ O 3 as locus of experimentally assessed, high-precision, pressure, density and temperature states up to 14 Mbar and 43 kK. The Hugoniot is established with single shock experiments using magnetically launched hyper velocity flyers on the Z Accelerator at Sandia National Laboratories. We explore principal Hugoniot states at very high shock 𝑇 and 𝑝 in the solid phase, tracking the solid-liquid boundary and culminating at 2.4-fold compression, where data provides a direct constraint on the liquid phase. Corresponding shock release data probe thermodynamic states complementary to the Hugoniot and place additional constraints on tabular EoS models. Our findings indicate a significant deviation from existing tabular EoS models for Al 2 ⁢ O 3 dictating a comprehensive overhaul. We develop two advanced EoSs for Al 2 ⁢ O 3 the SESAME 97412 model, featuring an extensive phase diagram that includes three solid phases and the liquid phase, and the updated LEOS 2200m2 model. EoS development is assisted with Quantum Molecular Dynamics simulations. Our experimental data allows for stringent testing of our EoSs. Both models accurately capture the Hugoniot of Al 2 ⁢O 3 up to the highest pressures and temperatures. Rigorous experimental determination of extreme pressures and temperatures, paired with sophisticated models, advances the frontier of EoS development beyond 1 terapascal.

A synoptic analysis of the first AVE-SESAME '79 period

Key features of a severe convection observed during April 10-11, 1979 as part of the Atmospheric Variability Experiment-Severe Environmental Storms and Mesoscale Experiment (AVE-SESAME) are examined. Three-hourly rawinsonde readings from 23 stations were taken, and vertical motion and divergence parameters are considered. The data were converted into a 127 km grid at the surface, and at 50 mb intervals from 900 mb to 100 mb by an objective analysis scheme, while a kinematic method was used to compute vertical motion. A weak upper tropospheric short wave trough was found to propagate from New Mexico into the Texas panhandle, while a jet maximum propagated eastward. The development of a strong wind maximum over Oklahoma and Kansas was associated with a rapid increase in upper-level divergence and the development of a small-scale pressure perturbation in the Texas panhandle, as well as a low-level jet and convergence, which led to rapid changes over the Red River Valley, where stability was decreased.

Structure of thunderstorms along a squall line on May 2, 1979

Preliminary results are presented concerning the structure of a developing squall line in Oklahoma on May 2, 1979, during SESAME. It is shown that the line developed ahead of a cold front with explosive growth. A synthesis of radar, satellite, sounding, and surface data is presented. The combined use of satellite and radar data is found to be of considerable value in describing the evolution of cells along the squall line. These are found to interact strongly with one another at all heights. Three preliminary conclusions are made. The first is that many of the cells initially move with the direction of the upper level winds and then turn to the right of all tropospheric winds. An explanation for this rightward turn is given in terms of the motion of the cold front relative to the cells. The second conclusion is that the updrafts in two of the cells at 0030 were quite vertical, and the upper level divergent region is almost directly above the low-level frontal windshift. The third conclusion is that the strongest downdrafts occurred from mid to upper levels and resulted from the strong convergence produced between the divergent outflow regions of two adjacent cells.

Equation of state for 304L stainless steel

Here, a new equation of state for 304L stainless steel has been constructed and entered in the Los Alamos National Laboratory SESAME database with material ID 4273. The equation of state is based on a multiphase approach. The solid and liquid phases were fitted to available experimental data for thermal expansion, heat capacity, and shock Hugoniot, as well as to data from density functional theory calculations of the cold curve and quantum molecular dynamics of the liquid regime. The electronic thermal contribution over the entire equation of state range is based on Tartarus (Green’s functions) average atom calculations. For this low-carbon stainless steel both the density functional and electronic thermal calculations are comprised of 19 wt% Cr, 10 wt% Ni, and the remainder Fe.

Spiner vs EOSPAC6: capabilities, performance, and accuracy considerations

The Cross-Cutting Capabilities Project (XCAP) has significant interest in collecting and implementing a common set of libraries to be used across the various production hydro-codes at LANL. A common set of libraries will help facilitate comparisons between codes. In addition to minimizing variables for comparisons and physics validation, efforts toward optimization and porting of packages for future architectures will be more efficient. As part of this push Singularity is being considered as an inclusive materials interface library. One crucial part of this library is the importing, inverting, and interpolation of equation of state (EOS) data. Currently the Lagrangian Applications Project (LAP) and Safety Applications Project (SAP) are using EOSPAC6 for delivery EOS data. The Eulerian Applications Project (EAP) has historically used TEOS and more recently an implementation of Singularly via a package called Spiner for EOS interpolation. Singularity currently has the option of using several analytical EOS models, directly employing SESAME via Spiner, or directly using SESAME via EOSPAC6 (not optimized yet). Assuming Singularity moves forward as a common platform for the implementation of materials models, a decision will need to be made on which EOS interpolation package XCAP should move forward with, given resources and people are finite. We will attempt to address pros and cons of Spiner and EOSPAC6 and the trade-offs that should be considered during the decision making process. This report is intended as an ASC-PEM-EOS perspective on what is needed in an EOS interpolation package. Performance and Accuracy sections will mostly address data from comparison studies in LA-UR-22-22699.

NASA's participation in the AVE-SESAME '79 program

NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center participated with its AVE (Atmospheric Variability Experiment) in a large interagency mesoscale and severe storms experiment identified herein as AVE-SESAME '79 (Atmospheric Variability Experiment-Severe Environmental Storms and Mesoscale Experiment 1979). A primary objective of NASA was to support an effort to acquire carefully edited sets of rawinsonde data during selected severe weather events for use in correlative and diagnostic studies with satellite and radar data obtained at approximately the same times. Data were acquired during six individual 24-h experiments on both the regional and storm scales over a network in the central United States that utilized approximately 20 supplemental rawinsonde sites meshed among 23 standard National Weather Service sites. Included among the six experiments are data obtained between 1200 GMT on April 10 and 1200 GMT on April 11, encompassing the formation and development period for the tornado-producing systems that devastated Wichita Falls, Texas, and other sections of Oklahoma and Texas. The other dates for which data sets are available are April 19-20 and 25-26, May 9-10 and 20-21, and June 7-8, 1979.

Automated Fitting of a Semi-empirical Multiphase Equation of State for Carbon

The equation of state (EOS) of carbon is important in high explosive, geophysical, and inertial confinement fusion applications. Within the semi-empirical Sesame framework, the EOS of each phase is represented by a sum of cold, vibrational, and thermal electronic Helmholtz free energy contributions. Each phase has ~5-10 independent parameters that are adjusted to reproduce single-phase data (e.g., thermal expansion, isothermal compression) as well as experimentally- and computationally- derived phase boundaries. Manual calibration of the full multiphase EOS is arduous. We present our progress in development of automated EOS parameterization based on minimization of an objective function. Here, this function encodes deviation of model EOS results from experimental/computational benchmarks. Optimization is implemented as a combination of global (particle swarm) and local optimization techniques.

High-precision shock equation of state measurements for metallic fluid carbon between 15 and 20 Mbar

Diamond is an efficient ablator material to convert the energy of high-power giant lasers into ablation pressure with applications for High-Energy-Density (HED) science, planetary science, and Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) research at the National Ignition Facility (NIF). Unfortunately, current theoretical equation of state models cannot reproduce all the observed experimental data in the multi-megabar regime particularly relevant for HED and ICF research. New experimental data on the behavior of carbon at extreme pressures and temperatures are, therefore, essential to improve our predictive capability to design and analyze dynamic compression experiments for HED or ICF research and build improved equation of state models in the future. In this paper, we report high-precision laser-driven shock compression measurements on diamond single crystals at the Omega Laser Facility. Using ultrafast Doppler optical Velocimetry Interferometer System for Any Reflector (VISAR) to track the leading shock front and a quartz plate as an in situ reference, we obtain relative pressure-density shock equation-of-state measurements between 15 and 20 Mbar with an impedance-matching procedure. We also report shock-and-release measurements in a spherical geometry at the NIF. The new data provide tight constraints on the compressibility of warm dense carbon along the Hugoniot of full density diamond, allowing us to discriminate between existing theoretical equation-of-state models. We find that both LLNL LEOS 9061 and LANL Sesame 7835 models capture well the shock compressibility in the explored range. LANL Sesame 7835 also reproduces well the observed shock-and-release behavior of diamond near 10–20 Mbar.

A kinetic energy analysis of the meso beta-scale severe storm environment

Analyses are performed of the meso beta-scale (20-200 km wavelengths and several hours to one-day periods) severe storm kinetic energy balance on the fifth day of the AVE SESAME campaign of May 1979. A 24-hr interval covering the antecedent, active and post-convective outbreak activity over Oklahoma are considered. Use is made of the kinetic energy budget equation (KEBE) for a finite volume in an isobaric coordinate system. Rawindsonde data with 75 km resolution were treated. The KEBE model covered changes in kinetic energy due to the cross contour flows, horizontal and vertical components of flux divergence, and volumic mass changes on synoptic and subsynoptic scales. The greatest variability was concentrated above 400 mb height and over the most intense storm activity. Energy was generated at the highest rates in divergence and decreased the most in convection. The meso beta-scale lacked sufficient resolution for analyzing mesoscale activity.

Polysulfone shock compressed above the decomposition threshold: Velocimetry and modeling of two-wave structures

Polysulfone was shock loaded to pressures of 14.6–26.2 GPa in a series of gas gun-driven plate-impact experiments measuring material response with embedded electro-magnetic particle velocity gauges and optical velocimetry. The embedded electro-magnetic particle velocity gauges did not show a distinct two-wave structure but did show rounding that suggested a reaction but not a distinct separation of the reactants and product waves. In contrast, the transmission experiments fielded with optical velocimetry, with product pressures ranging from 21.0 to 26.2 GPa, showed well-defined two-wave structures due to shock-driven chemical decomposition of the polymer to products at a higher density. Distinct two-wave structures have not previously been published in literature during polymer compression; here, we observed these two-wave structures at both the polymer/lithium fluoride and polymer/polymethylmethacrylate interfaces. Hydrodynamic simulations of the experiments were performed using a newly constructed SESAME equation of state (EOS) for the polymer, a thermochemical EOS for the decomposition products, and an Arrhenius reaction rate model for the kinetics of the reaction. Finally, simulation results also demonstrated two-wave structures but were unable to quantitatively reproduce either the embedded gauge or optical velocimetry data.

Kinetic energy budgets in areas of intense convection

A kinetic energy budget analysis of the AVE-SESAME 1 period which coincided with the deadly Red River Valley tornado outbreak is presented. Horizontal flux convergence was found to be the major kinetic energy source to the region, while cross contour destruction was the major sink. Kinetic energy transformations were dominated by processes related to strong jet intrusion into the severe storm area. A kinetic energy budget of the AVE 6 period also is presented. The effects of inherent rawinsonde data errors on widely used basic kinematic parameters, including velocity divergence, vorticity advection, and kinematic vertical motion are described. In addition, an error analysis was performed in terms of the kinetic energy budget equation. Results obtained from downward integration of the continuity equation to obtain kinematic values of vertical motion are described. This alternate procedure shows promising results in severe storm situations.
