Effects of wave damping and finite perpendicular scale on three-dimensional Alfvén wave parametric decay in low-beta plasmas

Shear Alfvén wave parametric decay instability (PDI) provides a potential path toward significant wave dissipation and plasma heating. However, fundamental questions regarding how PDI is excited in a realistic three-dimensional (3D) open system and how the finite perpendicular wave scale—as found in both laboratory and space plasmas—affects the excitation remain poorly understood. Here, we present the first 3D, open-boundary, hybrid kinetic-fluid simulations of kinetic Alfvén wave PDI in low-beta plasmas. Key findings are that the PDI excitation is strongly limited by the wave damping present, including electron–ion collisional damping (represented by a constant resistivity) and geometrical attenuation associated with the finite-scale Alfvén wave, and ion Landau damping of the child acoustic wave. The perpendicular wave scale alone, however, plays no discernible role: waves of different perpendicular scales exhibit similar instability excitation as long as the magnitude of the parallel ponderomotive force remains unchanged. These findings are corroborated by theoretical analysis and estimates. This new understanding of 3D kinetic Alfvén wave PDI physics is essential for laboratory study of the basic plasma process and may also aid future evaluation of the relevance/role of PDI in low-beta space plasma.

Low damping (111) oriented lithium aluminum ferrite thin films for spin wave applications

Spin wave-based spintronics are an alternative to conventional electronics due to their potential for efficient energy consumption, improved processing speed, and smaller device dimensions. Low damping magnetic insulators provide the medium for efficient propagation of spin waves for information transfer. Here, we have synthesized by pulsed laser deposition epitaxial spinel structure ferrite thin films of Li 0.5 (Al 1.0 Fe 1.5 )O 4 (LAFO) on (111)-oriented MgAl 2 O 4 that support isotropic magnon propagation in the film plane. Our ferromagnetic resonance measurements show low magnetic damping with a typical Gilbert damping parameter of α = 0.006 and weak-spin–orbit coupling with g = 2.02. These films have low effective magnetization, μ o M eff = 20 mT, similar to that of yttrium iron garnet, the gold standard of low loss magnetic insulators. Our findings show that LAFO is a good candidate as a spin wave medium since it can be grown at low temperatures in different crystal orientations.

Magnon damping in the zigzag phase of the Kitaev-Heisenberg- Γ model on a honeycomb lattice

We calculate dispersions and damping of the magnetic excitations in the model that is relevant to a description of the magnetic properties of iridium oxides α-Li 2 IrO 3 and Na 2 IrO 3 , and Ru-based materials such as α-RuCl 3 . Focusing on the parameter regime with the zigzag spin pattern in the ground state that is consistent with experiments, we are able to obtain explicit analytical expressions for magnon energies and eigenstates and go beyond the standard linear spin-wave theory approximation by calculating magnon damping and demonstrating its role in the dynamical structure factor. Here, we show that the magnon damping effects in both Born and self-consistent approximations are very significant, underscoring the importance of nonlinear magnon coupling in interpreting broad features in the neutron-scattering spectra.

Influence of temperature, doping, and amorphization on the electronic structure and magnetic damping of iron

Hybrid magnonic quantum systems have drawn increased attention in recent years for coherent quantum information processing, but too large magnetic damping is a persistent concern when metallic magnets are used. Their intrinsic damping is largely determined by electron-magnon scattering induced by spin-orbit interactions. In the low scattering limit, damping is dominated by intra-band electronic transitions, which has been theoretically shown to be proportional to the electronic density of states at the Fermi level. In this work, we focus on body-centered-cubic iron as a paradigmatic ferromagnetic material. We comprehensively study its electronic structure using first-principles density functional theory simulations and account for finite lattice temperature, boron (B) doping, and structure amorphization. Our results indicate that temperature induced atomic disorder and amorphous atomic geometries only have a minor influence. Instead, boron doping noticeably decreases the density of states near the Fermi level with an optimal doping level of 6.25%. In addition, we show that this reduction varies significantly for different atomic geometries and report that the highest reduction correlates with a large magnetization of the material. Furthermore, this may suggest materials growth under external magnetic fields as a route to explore in experiment.

Construction of the damped Ly⁢𝛼 absorber catalog for DESI DR2 Ly⁢𝛼 BAO

We present the Damped Ly⁢𝛼 Toolkit for automated detection and characterization of damped Ly⁢𝛼 absorbers (DLAs) in quasar spectra. Our method uses quasar spectral templates with and without absorption from intervening DLAs to reconstruct observed quasar forest regions. The best-fitting model determines whether a DLA is present while estimating the redshift and HI column density. With an optimized quality cut on detection significance (Δ⁢𝜒$^{2}_{𝑟}$ >0.03), the technique achieves an estimated 80% purity and 79% completeness when evaluated on simulated spectra with S/N>2 that are free of broad absorption lines (BALs). We provide a catalog containing candidate DLAs from the DLA Toolkit detected in DESI DR1 quasar spectra, of which 21 719 were found in S/N>2 spectra with predicted log 10 ⁡(𝑁 𝙷𝙸 )>20.3 and detection significance Δ⁢𝜒$^{2}_{𝑟}$ >0.03. We compare the Damped Ly⁢𝛼 Toolkit to two alternative DLA finders based on a convolutional neural network and Gaussian process models. We present a strategy for combining these three techniques to produce a high-fidelity DLA catalog from DESI DR2 for the Ly⁢𝛼 forest baryon acoustic oscillation measurement. The combined catalog contains 41 152 candidate DLAs with log 10 ⁡(𝑁 𝙷𝙸 )>20.3 from quasar spectra with S/N>2. We estimate this sample to be approximately 85% pure and 79% complete when BAL quasars are excluded.

The Cause of Insufficient Damping in Phase-Locked-Loop and Its Influence

Phase-locked loop (PLL) is a critical component that synchronizes grid-following (GFL) inverter-based resources (IBR) to the grid. Insufficient damping in PLL has been identified as a cause associated with real-world weak grid stability issues. This paper reveals that the second-order low-pass filter deployed in a sophisticated PLL structure can have negative influence on damping performance and lead to system instability when the grid is weak and power generation is low. Improving the PLL damping is illustrated as one of the mitigation approaches. The dynamic study is carried out in electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation environment. In addition to EMT demonstration, a simplified analytical model of PLL is developed to represent a PLL with the sophisticated structure. The resulting overall analytical model of the entire system is then used for eigenvalue- based analysis to illustrate the influence of PLL on dynamic modes.

Measurements of DC SQUID Damping Effects on Superconducting Resonant Circuits

Here, we present experimental measurements of SQUID-induced damping effects on strongly coupled, lumped-element resonators in the 500kHz–1 MHz frequency range. While dc SQUIDs are commonly used for sensitive readout of electromagnetic signals such as in lumped-element axion dark matter searches, coupling a dc SQUID to a resonant circuit modifies the circuit's resonance frequency, quality factor, noise, and impedance. These parameters have a direct impact on the science reach of axion dark matter detectors, making it important to understand SQUID damping contributions. We describe a helium dip probe and two-stage SQUID readout scheme used to probe SQUID damping effects. Measurements from this setup inform the design and operation of both future test platforms as well as next-generation dark-matter experiments.

Deep Reinforcement Learning-Based Control of Energy Storage for Interarea Oscillation Damping

With the increasing electricity consumption and lack of transmission investment, today's power systems are operated much closer to their limits, raising concerns of inter-area oscillations that deteriorate the system stability. Here, this article presents a novel energy storage placement and control approach for enhanced damping of interarea oscillations. Combining the residual analysis and dominant mode analysis, we are able to identify the advantageous locations for placing energy storage that achieve improved damping performance. To overcome the challenges, such as fixed control parameters and insufficient damping, we propose to use a deep reinforcement learning-based approach for energy storage control. A state-of-the-art guided surrogate-gradient-based evolutionary strategy is used to train a learning agent in a robust, efficient, and reproducible manner. Parallel computing is also adopted to speed up the training process. The proposed strategy has been tested on both medium and large-scale systems. The proposed methods have demonstrated their effectiveness in mitigating various interarea oscillations within a timeframe of 20 s, thereby averting system collapse and enhancing power grid stability effectively.

Exploring a quantum-information-relevant magnonic material: Ultralow damping at low temperature in the organic ferrimagnet V[TCNE]x

Quantum information science and engineering require novel low-loss magnetic materials for magnon-based quantum-coherent operations. The search for low-loss magnetic materials, traditionally driven by applications in microwave electronics near room temperature, has gained additional constraints from the need to operate at cryogenic temperatures for many applications in quantum information science and technology. Whereas yttrium iron garnet (YIG) has been the material of choice for decades, the emergence of molecule-based materials with robust magnetism and ultra-low damping has opened new avenues for exploration. Specifically, thin films of vanadium tetracyanoethylene (V[TCNE]x) can be patterned into the multiple, connected structures needed for hybrid quantum elements and have shown room-temperature Gilbert damping (α = 4 × 10−5) that rivals the intrinsic (bulk) damping otherwise seen only in highly polished YIG spheres (far more challenging to integrate into arrays). Here, the authors present a comprehensive and systematic study of the low-temperature magnetization dynamics for V[TCNE]x thin films, with implications for their application in quantum systems. These studies reveal a temperature-driven, strain-dependent magnetic anisotropy that compensates the thin-film shape anisotropy and the recovery of a magnetic resonance linewidth at 5 K that is comparable to room-temperature values (roughly 2 G at 9.4 GHz). The authors can account for these variations of the V[TCNE]x linewidth within the context of scattering from very dilute paramagnetic impurities and anticipate additional linewidth narrowing as the temperature is further reduced.

Damping-Ring-Free Injector Design for Linear Colliders

The current designs of future electron-positron linear colliders incorporate large and complex damping rings to produce asymmetric beams for beamstrahlung mitigation at the interaction point. This paper presents the design of an damping-ring-free electron injector capable of delivering flat electron beams with phase-space partition comparable to the electron-beam parameters produced downstream of the damping ring in the proposed international linear collider (ILC) design. The performance of the proposed configuration, its sensitivity to jitter along with its impact on spin-polarization is discussed.

Bulk Viscous Damping of Density Oscillations in Neutron Star Mergers

In this paper, we discuss the damping of density oscillations in dense nuclear matter in the temperature range relevant to neutron star mergers. This damping is due to bulk viscosity arising from the weak interaction “Urca” processes of neutron decay and electron capture. The nuclear matter is modelled in the relativistic density functional approach. The bulk viscosity reaches a resonant maximum close to the neutrino trapping temperature, then drops rapidly as temperature rises into the range where neutrinos are trapped in neutron stars. We investigate the bulk viscous dissipation timescales in a post-merger object and identify regimes where these timescales are as short as the characteristic timescale ~10 ms, and, therefore, might affect the evolution of the post-merger object. Our analysis indicates that bulk viscous damping would be important at not too high temperatures of the order of a few MeV and densities up to a few times saturation density.

Impact of Wide-Area Oscillation Damping Control using Measurement-Driven Approach on System Separation - Saudi Grid Case Study

In any interconnected power grid, low-frequency oscillations is a major problem that can limit the power transfer capability and deteriorate power system security due to potential low-damped or even undamped oscillations. Synchronized measurements provided by PMUs enable the design and development of wide-area oscillation damping controllers (WADC) based on measurement-driven model to overcome the limitations of traditional controllers. This work focuses on the impact of a W ADC based on a measurement-driven approach on system separation for the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) grid. A grid model is provided by SEC for this study. Modal analysis is performed to identify the oscillation mode of interest for which the controller is designed. Damping the dominant oscillation mode helps slightly to improve transient stability of the system. Considering bus frequency at different locations in SEC's system as the candidate observation signals, the optimal observation signal is chosen for the W ADC by using the FFT method. The system transfer function model is constructed by utilizing probing measurements. Then, the W ADC parameters are calculated based on the identified model. The performance of the designed W ADC is tested under different contingencies.

Magnetostriction and damping of forced vibrations in Fe-Mo single and polycrystal alloys

Magnetostriction and damping of forced vibrations in Fe-Mo single and polycrystal alloys is studied and analyzed with respect to existing approaches and experimental data. In this work, our data suggest that a more complex dependence (compared with linear dependence predicted by Smith and Birchak) between damping capacity and magnetostriction takes place for this and possibly other Fe-based ferromagnetic alloys. We believe that more factors related to the structural changes, brought about by the additions (elements added to Fe), which can affect phase stability as well as magnetic and electric contributions influencing property response, should be considered to provide a better correlation between the magnetic and magnetomechanical characteristics of this alloy.

The Thermo-Elastic Properties and Damping of U-6wt%Nb

While thermal expansion data exists for quenched (as well as aged) U-6wt%Nb, there is wide variation in the reported room temperature elastic moduli. To better understand the room temperature elastic behavior and to address the complete absence of data on the temperature dependence of the elastic moduli, room temperature and in-situ elevated temperature resonant ultrasonic spectroscopy (RUS) was performed along with x-ray diffraction (XRD) and dilatometry using a thermomechanical analyzer (TMA). An in-situ small- and wide-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) experiment was performed on a companion sample to help interpret the results. The room temperature polycrystalline dynamic moduli were measured to be E = 95.4 ± 4.5 GPa and G = 35.2 ± 0.2 GPa, respectively. As the temperature is raised, the stiffness slowly decreases, consistent with the empirical rule proposed by Varshni, up to the point of precipitation of the equilibrium α-U phase, which is stiffer than the martensitic phases. Homogenization theory of composites can be used to rationalize the observed response at high temperatures and after high-temperature exposures. Further, aging of the material at low temperatures (≤200°C) does not affect the linear elastic stiffness, but does impact the damping behavior which can be measured through RUS. This change in damping provides another perspective on the microstructure changes induced by low-temperature aging which also result in significant strengthening.

Biologically-inspired rib designs for captured powder damping in additive manufacturing

This paper describes the design and impact testing of laser powder bed fusion 316L stainless steel walls with captured powder cores. The purpose is to determine the effect of biologically-inspired internal ribs on the mode shapes and damping ratios. Comparison is made between five designs: solid and powder core with {no ribs, vertical ribs, hatched ribs, and bat wing ribs}. The powder core increases damping ratios by factors of 2 to 58 depending on the mode number and design. Mode shape and modal parameter evaluations show that the ribbed powder core designs enable tailored dynamics relative to the solid wall.

Inter-Area Oscillation Damping with Type-5 Wind Power Plant

This paper investigates the potential of using brushless excitation (BLE) for not only riding through the fault but also to damp inter-area power oscillation with the help of a synchronous generator (SG) used in Type 5 Wind Power Plant (WPP). In BLE, an auxiliary synchronous generator (ASG) behaving like an exciter is coupled and driven by the rotor of the main SG. The BLE's field current's ASG is fed by two separate loops of the automatic voltage regulator (AVR) and power system stabilizer (PSS). The AVR system implements a control loop to regulate the generator terminal voltage, VT. For the PSS, the kinetic energy of the wind turbine is utilized according to the estimated rotational speed of the synchronous generator shaft of the SG. It may mitigate the necessity of any curtailment of active power for damping. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is verified with a three-phase short circuit fault in a two-area power system.

Data-Driven Adaptive Damping Controller for Wind Power Plants with Doubly-Fed Induction Generators

This paper presents an adaptive damping controller for wind power plants in which the turbines are equipped with doubly-fed induction generators. The controller is designed to respond to an input control signal that is triggered according to the system operating conditions. A processing unit continuously estimates the electromechanical modes of oscillation based on real-time streaming data acquired from a phasor measurement unit that is strategically positioned on the grid. The decision to trigger (or not trigger) the control signal is automatic, based on the relative damping of the dominant mode. The modes are estimated using the dynamic mode decomposition algorithm with time-delay embedding. Numerical simulations performed on the two-area system demonstrate that the proposed controller enhances the rotor angle stability for both small-signal and large disturbances, and is adaptive to changing grid conditions.
