Analyzing Black Hole X-Rays with Simulations

We generate synthetic X-ray spectra of black holes from large-scale 3D GRMHD simulations performed on HPC machines. Here are a sampling of model spectra, characterized by the parameters indicated in the diagram below. The dashed red lines show power law fits to the parts of the spectrum observed by the X-ray telescope NuSTAR. How well these model spectra compare to real data helps us to characterize the physical realism of the underlying simulation techniques.

GIS-Based Graphical User Interface Tools for Analyzing Solar Thermal Desalination Systems & High-Potential Implementation

This project developed a user-friendly, open-source, software that enables a comparative evaluation of solar thermal desalination technology options and employs geospatial data layers to identify regions of high-potential for solar thermal desalination. This was accomplished by integrating solar models with desalination models and enhancing their utility by providing GIS-based data inputs. The developed Solar Energy Desalination Analysis Tool (SEDAT) enables techno-economical evaluation of desalination technologies and selection of regions with the highest potential for using solar energy to power desalination plants. It simplifies the planning, design, and valuation of solar thermal and solar hybrid desalination systems in the U.S. and worldwide. SEDAT uses Dash for integrating various layers of large volumes of GIS data with Python-based models of solar energy generation and desalination technologies. It derives time-series of energy generation and water production, with details of plant performance and suggestions for improving the solar-desalination coupling. It is a one of-a-kind tool of analysis representing a definitive advancement in the state-of-the-art. Of solar desalination modeling This report summarizes the various phases of the tool’s development, and presents examples of the results.

Compare $\overline{ν}$ parameterizations for 235 U(n,f) with fitted fission barriers

In this document, we compare observables computed with CGMF to some available data for 235 U(n,f), to investigate the multi-chance fission probabilities (fission barriers from CoH were refit) and two TKE parametrization. The four parametrizations include i) default CGMF multi-chance fission probabilities with bends in TKE for all fission chances, ii) default CGMF multi-chance fission probabilities with a TKE bend in only first-chance fission iii) refitted multi-chance fission probabilities with bends in TKE for all fission chances, and iv) refitted multi-chance fission probabilities with a bend in TKE for only first-chance fission. In all figures where the four parametrizations are on the same plot, the ones with bends in TKE for all chance fission are in black, with only first-chance bend in red, the default multi-chance fission probabilities are dashed and the new multi-chance fission probabilities are the solid lines.

Calculations Document

Figure 1 shows a simplified model schematic of the Tetracage target design. In this figure the green lines represent the Tetracage yarns, which consist of two parallel yarns on the top and two parallel yarns on the bottom with the pairs in a cross hatched pattern. For simplicity, as we are only considering vertical forces, we will perform calculations without consideration for the two pairs of yarns being perpendicular to each other. Also worth noting is the model shows the yarns extending directly to the capsule then closely hugging it – in reality, the yarns behave as you would expect where they hug the capsule only as much as the geometry of their deflection allows, similarly to if you held a tennis ball with a pair of parallel strings anchored at opposing ends. The dashed black lines show the path the yarns take straight across from slot glue point to slot glue point before the target is closed and the capsule deforms them. The variable r corresponds to the capsule outer radius. The variable L corresponds to the hohlraum inner radius. The variable a corresponds to the yarn offset from the center of the diagnostic band. The variable d corresponds to the wire deflection vertically.

Joint Survey Processing. I. Compact Oddballs in the COSMOS Field—Low-luminosity Quasars at z > 6?

The faint-end slope of the quasar luminosity function at z ~ 6 and its implication on the role of quasars in reionizing the intergalactic medium at early times has been an outstanding problem for some time. The identification of faint high-redshift quasars with luminosities of <10 44.5 erg s –1 is challenging. They are rare (few per square degree), and the separation of these unresolved quasars from late-type stars and compact star-forming galaxies is difficult from ground-based observations alone. In addition, source confusion becomes significant at >25 mag, with ~30% of sources having their flux contaminated by foreground objects when the seeing resolution is ~0''.7. We mitigate these issues by performing a pixel-level joint processing of ground and space-based data from Subaru/Hyper-SuprimeCam (HSC) and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). We create a deconfused catalog over the 1.64 deg 2 of the COSMOS field, after accounting for spatial varying point-spread functions and astrometric differences between the two data sets. We identify twelve low-luminosity (M UV ~ –21 mag) z > 6 quasar candidates through (i) their red color measured between ACS/F814W and HSC/i band and (ii) their compactness in the space-based data. Nondetections of our candidates in Hubble DASH data argues against contamination from late-type stars. Our constraints on the faint end of the quasar luminosity function at z ~ 6.4 suggest a negligibly small contribution to reionization compared to the star-forming galaxy population. The confirmation of our candidates and the evolution of number density with redshift could provide better insights into how supermassive galaxies grew in the first billion years of cosmic time.

Flight investigation of 24 deg boattail nozzle drag at varying subsonic flight conditions

Four configurations of rounded shoulder boattail nozzles were tested on an underwing nacelle mounted on an F-106B aircraft. The effects of various parameters on boattail drag were investigated at Mach numbers of 0.6 and 0.9. The parameters studied were Reynolds number, angle-of-attack, nozzle pressure ratio, nozzle geometry, and nozzle axial location with respect to the wing. These nozzles simulated nonafterburning configurations appropriate for turbofan powered aircraft with supersonic dash capability. Increasing Reynolds number significantly lowered the boattail drag coefficient of all the nozzles at both M sub 0 = 0.6 and M sub 0 = 0.9.

ADMAP (automatic data manipulation program)

Instructions are presented on the use of ADMAP, (automatic data manipulation program) an aerospace data manipulation computer program. The program was developed to aid in processing, reducing, plotting, and publishing electric propulsion trajectory data generated by the low thrust optimization program, HILTOP. The program has the option of generating SC4020 electric plots, and therefore requires the SC4020 routines to be available at excution time (even if not used). Several general routines are present, including a cubic spline interpolation routine, electric plotter dash line drawing routine, and single parameter and double parameter sorting routines. Many routines are tailored for the manipulation and plotting of electric propulsion data, including an automatic scale selection routine, an automatic curve labelling routine, and an automatic graph titling routine. Data are accepted from either punched cards or magnetic tape.

Common radiation analysis model for 75,000 pound thrust NERVA engine (1137400E)

The mathematical model and sources of radiation used for the radiation analysis and shielding activities in support of the design of the 1137400E version of the 75,000 lbs thrust NERVA engine are presented. The nuclear subsystem (NSS) and non-nuclear components are discussed. The geometrical model for the NSS is two dimensional as required for the DOT discrete ordinates computer code or for an azimuthally symetrical three dimensional Point Kernel or Monte Carlo code. The geometrical model for the non-nuclear components is three dimensional in the FASTER geometry format. This geometry routine is inherent in the ANSC versions of the QAD and GGG Point Kernal programs and the COHORT Monte Carlo program. Data are included pertaining to a pressure vessel surface radiation source data tape which has been used as the basis for starting ANSC analyses with the DASH code to bridge into the COHORT Monte Carlo code using the WANL supplied DOT angular flux leakage data. In addition to the model descriptions and sources of radiation, the methods of analyses are briefly described.

Undergraduate research report

Studies are reported of the probability distribution of yield strength for mild steel, and the application of numerical techniques to solve mechanical vibration problems. Tensile experiments were conducted for 50 cold rolled and 38 hot rolled mild steel rods. Chi-square, Kolmogro-Smirnov and goodness-of-fit methods are used to test the normality or lognormality of the experimental results. As an example of the application of numerical techniques, a nonlinear dash-pot-speing system subjected to seismic excitation is analyzed by using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta integrated method.

To evaluate ERTS-1 data for usefulness as a geological sensor in the diverse geological terraines of New York State

The author has identified the following significant results. Linear anomalies dominate the new geological information derived from ERTS-1 imagery, total lengths now exceeding 6000 kms. Experimentation with a variety of viewing techniques suggests that conventional photogeologic analyses of band 7 results in the location of more than 97 percent of all linears found. Bedrock lithologic types are distinguishable only where they are topographically expressed or govern land use signatures. The maxima on rose diagrams for ERTS-1 anomalies correspond well with those for mapped faults and topographic lineaments, despite a difference in relative magnitudes of maxima thought due to solar illumination direction. A multiscale analysis of linears showed that single topographic linears at 1:2,500,000 became dashed jugate linears at 1:500,000, and shorter linears lacking any conspicuous zonal alignment at 1:250,000. Most circular features found were explained away by U-2 airphoto analysis but several remain as anomalies. Visible glacial features include individual drumlins, best seen in winter imagery, drumlinoids, eskers, ice-marginal drainage channels, glacial lake shorelines and sand plains, and end moraines.

Observed effects of earth-reflected radiation and hydrogen drag on the orbital accelerations of balloon satellites.

From March through May 1967, the high-altitude balloon satellites Pageos (1966 56A) and Dash 2 (1963 30D) were both in continuous sunlight orbits. Observed variations in the orbital accelerations of both satellites are found to be due primarily to a combination of the perturbing effects of earth albedo radiation and atmospheric drag. An equation based on diffuse Lambertian reflection of sunlight from the earth predicts quite well the observed trend of orbital accelerations for both satellites due to the force of earth albedo radiation. After correcting for this effect, the remaining orbital energy changes are found to be consistent with atmospheric drag perturbations, making it possible to deduce mean exospheric densities above 2300 km. The results indicate that hydrogen concentrations during the observation period were about three times greater than that given by the U.S. Standard Atmosphere Supplements (1966).

Evaluation of ERTS-1 imagery for spectral geological mapping in diverse terranes of New York State

The author has identified the following significant results. Linear anomalies dominate the new geological information derived from ERTS-1 imagery, total lengths now exceeding 6000 km. Experimentation with a variety of viewing techniques suggest that conventional photogeologic analyses of band 7 results in the location of more than 97 percent of all linears found. The maxima on rose diagrams for ERTS-1 anomalies correspond well with those for mapped faults and topographic lineaments. A multiscale analysis of linears showed that single topographic linears at 1:2,500,000 became dashed linears at 1:1,000,000 aligned zones of shorter parallel, en echelon, or conjugate linears at 1:500,00. Most circular features found were explained away by U-2 airphoto analysis but several remain as anomalies. Visible glacial features include individual drumlins, best seen in winter imagery, drumlinoids, eskers, ice-marginal drainage channels, glacial lake shorelines and sand plains, and end moraines.

Assessment of ERTS-1 imagery as a tool for regional geological analysis in New York State

The author has identified the following significant results. Linear anomalies dominate the new geological information derived from ERTS-1 imagery, total lengths now exceeding 26,500 km. Maxima on rose diagrams for ERTS-1 anomalies correspond well with those for mapped faults and topographic lineaments. Multi-scale analysis of linears shows that single topographic linears at 1:2,500,000 may become dashed linears at 1:1,000,000 aligned zones of shorter parallel, en echelon, or conjugate linears at 1:5000,000, and shorter linears lacking any conspicuous zonal alignment at 1:250,000. Field work in the Catskills suggests that the prominent new NNE lineaments may be surface manifestations of dip slip faulting in the basement, and that it may become possible to map major joint sets over extensive plateau regions directly on the imagery. Most circular features found were explained away by U-2 airfoto analysis but several remain as anomalies. Visible glacial features include individual drumlins, drumlinoids, eskers, ice-marginal drainage channels, glacial lake shorelines, sand plains, and end moraines.
